Arcane, I have been studying Japanese now for about 9 months… Presently, I am using Genki 1 with an Italki tutor…. I have also used other books , too. I’m loosing interest… I don’t like the way Genki presents the material… I’m thinking of switching to Tobira Beginning Japanese with its workbook. Maybe a new format will get me excited again. Would you recommend Tobira, and have you looked at Tobira workbook 1? Arigato Gozaimasu! John
It's more modern, and it's not assuming the learner is a college student. The context and examples aren't all about college and that age group, as much of Genki does. They teach much of the same material. Keep in mind however, that although I like Tobira Beginning better personally, it's so new that not many teachers or supplementary material is available for it yet. It will mostly be up to you to utilize it as a self-resource until more teachers discover and begin using it (it will likely be several years before that happens)
Best book is the one that you use consistently I personally started with Learn Japanese from zero book 1 but anything is good if you stick with it which why all the Japanese bestsellers are for beginning Japanese very few people make past the 3 month and also if you want to learn Japanese you are going to need at least 2-3 years depending on how much time you spend on it.
I have my old “101” books from college, Genki, and this book. This is my favorite by far.
Can you review the Tobira 2 textbook as well? 😭❤🙏🏻
Thank you for your comment and request!! I will look into it in the future!

Should I get 'Tobira 2: Beginning Japanese' after Book 1, or go straight to 'Tobira: Gateway To Advanced Japanese Learning'?
Hi! Are there english translations in the book for the dialogs?
Great video. I will check it out. Thanks.
Thank you so much 😊

Is it better than Genki though? I’m not sure which one to buy
