    A little side note for 11:48-11:25, you can do the same thing in Windows before you start the live USB.
    Start menu -> Disk Management
    Right click on the NTFS partition you're editing (box with blue line above it) and select "Shrink". Windows will automatically trim the partition to fit your current saved files AND leave a little extra for rollover.

    Thanks for the great advice. Dual booting Pop!_OS is definitely not obvious. The distro managers could definitely explain or automate this process.

    Jay, this comment is not about Pop OS but *is* about dual-boot with Windows 10. I made my first move into Linux only about a month ago by (ultimately) settling on MX Linux as the best (for me) choice to load on an old and very hardware-limited Acer Aspire One netbook. The first distro I put on it was Mint 19.2 with the Cinnamon desktop but quickly realized that the hardware wasn't up to it (only 2 gig of RAM). This video on a dual-boot installation of Pop! OS with Windows 10 was the final bit of encouragement I needed to go back to Mint 19.2/Cinnamon and perform a similar dual-OS install on a second laptop, this time on a Lenovo Flex 3 (with more RAM). And, in fact, I performed it just tonight...and successfully! In this video, I didn't pick up on any kind of cautionary note from you about dual boot setups. However, during all of the considerable Linux-focused UA-cam viewing I've done during my learning process, I came upon another UA-cam-er who (admittedly 4 years ago) posted a video in which he came down firmly against dual boot (calling it the Dual Boot Deception). He claimed it created a very unstable environment for the Linux OS. It's possible he's changed his mind in the years since...and it's also possible that there are two firmly-entrenched camps on this. Can you provide more insight? Is there anything I need to be on the lookout for with dual-boot...or anything I should do in any pro-active fashion?

    Nice video. 2 things missing IMHO:
    - You did forget to add the /recovery partition (4GB FAT32) which is a nice feature of Pop!_OS
    - Is there a way to configure systemd-boot to manage what OS to boot (with timer)?

      I'm about to install Pop_Os next to my Win 10 (might wait until 20.04 comes out) and I would be interested in the recovery partition. After I create the 4 gigs fat32 partition how do I tell Pop Os that this one should be the recovery partition?

      Every Pop!_OS dual boot tutorial has at least one of this comment haha. I'm also new to Linux (hence why I'm watching this video) but if I was to try and paraphrase what I've seen other people say in response to comments like yours, I would say that it's difficult to set up grub with Pop!_OS because Pop uses something called systemd, and these tutorials try to be more beginner friendly. I hope I could help but I don't even know what I'm talking about...

    BEWARE! I had nothing but frustration, trying to get this to work on two old laptops from 2006 and 2011. I tried loading POP!_OS on top of both Win7x64 Pro and Win10x64 Pro. Ain't gonna happen. Even after I found instructions from another source on getting grub up to snuff (since just using F8 or F12 CANNOT work on these older computers, where those boot menus are burned into ROM), I hit a brick wall when gparted threw up the error "partition can't be outside the disk." This happened on both laptops. I believe gparted is trying to read the old fashioned MBR as if it was the more modern GPT setup. I might be able to switch to GPT, but it's waaaaay more trouble than it's worth, especially since I'm not sure that's the only problem.

    Instead, I ordered a used 250GB 6 Gb/s hard drive for $8 and change on eBay. I'll try to do a clean install, just to try out POP!_OS. I think this tutorial would be much improved if it contained a warning about the minimum specs for the target disk. What works on one machine, doesn't work for all machines. The BIOS on these older laptops wasn't built with UEFI (see 8:03) to handle GPT style boot records, and that might be ANOTHER issue if i tried to switch to the newer system. Not going to happen.

    I found that POP!_OS version 19.10 will install on a single partition alongside the Windows 10 partition. It is not necessary to create the additional SWAP or BOOT partitions. This is helpful for people with a limit of 4 partitions on a MBR hard drive. After installing, I was able to access my datafiles on the Windows partition from within POP in the Files folder. However, I could not boot to Windows. In order to boot to Windows and have a dual boot system, I had to manipulate the GRUB file in POP terminal window to add a reference to the Windows directory. Dual boot is not automatic on my system. The presenter must have had his drive configured to allow more than 4 partitions and used a system that creates dual boot automatically. It would be good if he made another video explaining the configuration of his hard drive. Here are the commands I used in the POP terminal window to enable dual boot: sudo os-prober If you get a message that the command is not recognized, type os-prober and it will prompt you to add the os-prober application. Then run sudo os-prober again. If this detects Windows, then type the command: sudo update-grub Then restart your system and open the boot options menu and select to boot to your hard drive. Another window will pop up asking you which partition. Select the Windows partition or the POP partition and it will boot to your selection. Here is the URL reference for this procedure. www.trishtech.com/2017/09/quickly-add-windows-10-to-grub-menu-after-installing-ubuntu/ There are other ways to create a dual boot different from this but his apparently works for older systems.

Could it be possible , to create the partition for the "Pop boot" on the internal HD and have the other two partitions on the external mini-sd card? That way I can choose the partition inside the HD to be a bootable option in the BIOS but it doesn't take all the space (20GB +)? Basically I'm trying to save as much space as I can on the internal HD since it's not too big. Thanks

    Good work. I am going to give Pop OS a try. I have not installed yet but I am typing this from the live install using Firefox. I was very impressed with the way my audio interface was immediately recognized. I have a Behringer UMC 204hd and I got sound with out fighting through other options. I downloaded the NVIDIA choice, and that was one of the feature that drew me to Pop OS. My system is new that I built myself. Ryzen 5 3600, Nvidia Gtx 1660 16gb ram. I may have done something wrong the first time but Etcher did not work for me. I had to use Rufus. I have an Asus x570 Tuf Gaming plus WiFi motherboard, and the bios is fussy. Being frendly to new hardware is what bought me to Pop. The only negative to me is that is marketed to programmers and tech folks and I am ne w to Linux. I am going to try to have a good Linux experience.

      Boot up with the live Pop OS flash drive like he did. If the install pops up on it's own, exit it. Now hit the super key (windows key) and type gparted and hit enter. Make the free space on the windows partition like he did, then exit gparted and start the Pop OS setup (there's an icon for it). When setup gets to the partitioning, allow it to automatically create the partitions so you won't have to mess with it. It should say something like "install Pop OS alongside windows". What it will do is create an extended partition and stick other partitions inside it. If you do windows from scratch someday, only create a 500MB fat32 with boot and esp flags (use gparted from a live Linux usb) and a NTFS partition for windows (with no flags). FYI flags are created by simply right-clicking the partition and choosing manage flags. You should only have 2 partitions for windows. Swap doesn't count as a primary, so you could make the two other partitions like he did in this video.
      FYI, almost all other Linux installs will install a boot loader, meaning a colored screen at startup that allows you to choose an OS. If you have a boot loader like that, you don't have to create the second fat32 partition he did for POP OS. That's because the boot loader will be installed on that first fat32 partition that windows was already using. Make sure it's 500MB not smaller like in this video (I bet yours already is 500). Zorin OS is as popular as Pop and the installer does install a boot loader called GRUB (they almost all use grub). It has a nifty little count-down timer that when it gets to zero it chooses the default OS. You can edit the count-down time and the default OS later in settings. Keep in mind that with Linux you can always just make the free space from the windows partition and allow the install to create it's partitions as it sees fit. I use Pop OS on my desktop and Zorin on my laptop. Zorin OS rocks. It has a windows looking layout but I don't hold that against it. That actually helps new Linux users feel comfortable. The only thing that's missing in Zorin that Pop OS has is the auto tiling feature. With a little screen like a laptop you can't really use that anyway.

    I assume that if Pop! OS quits working the USB with the live mode of Pop! OS will serve as a recovery drive. An alternative is to create a Pop! OS recovery partition. The Pop! OS 22-04 is 8 GB and likely to grow so the partition size should be sized at twice that or 15 GiB. A GiB is 2**30. A GB is 10**9. Also, if you intend to try out different Linux distributions, a home partition is recommended.

Install goes fine; however, I had to create an Extended partition and then put the Linux Boot, Swap, and OS partitions in Extension. On restart, the Boot Options don't show Linux and Windows as options. It only shows the hardware Internal HDD, USB, CD, etc. I think this is a limitation of the BIOS. Is there a way to establish a secondary boot option after selecting "Internal HDD". Perhaps a modification to the MBR?

    Dumb question. If I have a blank 1TB SSD in my system, can I just do a "Clean Install" and choose that drive instead of making partitions? Thanks!

    Quick question about files and partition usage. I'm assuming that Linux files, downloads, installs etc, stay on the root partition, and files on the windows partition stay there?

    I'm dual booting from an external ssd. The first partition forces 1 MB preceeding and immediately gives the warning "Unable to read the contents of this file system! Because of this some operations may be unavailable.The following packages is required for fat32 file system support: dosfstools, mtools"
    I tried deleting and attempting once more, it keeps giving the same error. Later, the installation fails.

    Ok I done every thing exactly but when I press on "Modify Partitions..." in order to create the unallocated space, an error always pops up:
    "Not all of the space available to /dev/nvme01 appears to be used, you can fix the GPT to use all of the space (an extra 4544 blockes) or continue with the current setting?"
    So, I choose "Ignore" of course because I afraid to miss with it, but it eventually fail to continue...
    So I tried to avoid that by checking "Use Partition" with the EFI Partition as "Boot" without formatting it and the unallocated space as "Root", and then I found the button "Erase and Install" turned to be available but, when I press it, a new error appears:
    "Installing Pop!-OS 20.10 failed, possibly due to a hardware error. Detailed logs were written to /temp/installer.log. Your device may not restart properly." !!
    please help me with that..

    You create your own boot partion and use it ==sda5==, but in their docs they say to use the existing boot partition from the previous OS, you already have it ==sda2==. So which way is the correct one?

    So Pop OS doesn't use Grub. If would like to set up a triple or Quadrupal boot system using Grub If I give Pop OS it's own boot partition and keep it separate from the Grub install will this work? If I can boot into Ubuntu, I have some tools installed to fix Grub and also scan for other OS's on the hard drives I have on this computer. I currently have 3 hard drives. I may need to use a spare hard drive and install Pop OS on it and then place it in this computer and see if that tool finds the OS and I can create a Grub entry to boot into Pop OS.

    • @LearnLinuxTV
      @LearnLinuxTV  5 років тому

      Yes, that's UEFI. If your system doesn't allow non-Microsoft bootloaders, then that could be a potential barrier. None of my systems have that restriction though.
