    Yet another Dale Calder video that reminds me of my dear departed grandmother. Rhubarb custard is one of my favorite pies also. I'd never thought of making it into a beautiful rectangular tart. Grandma would have thought that very fancy!

    Brings back old memories. My mom and uncle both used to make this pie a lot. We had huge rhubarb patches in Pennsylvania. It was a family favorite for sure. Rhubarb upside down cake was also another way we used it. Thank you for sharing.

    Hi Dale....the Pie looks wonderful, I'm sure it tasted good! I have very fond memories of Rhubarb as a child. My Aunt would always give me a stick with a cup of Sugar for me to dip the Rhubarb into and eat. These days I prefer my Rhubarb as a Crumble with Custard or alternatively cooked slowly in the oven and then eaten cold with Greek Yoghurt for breakfast.

    Yum! Beautiful recipe! Down here in hot Maryland, my rhubarb plants are pretty unhappy in the heat. I get enough for barely one dish from 3 plants & made strawberry rhubarb crisp - my husbands favorite. I wish I had enough for your pie.
    Thanks for sharing!

      I wonder if it is available in supermarkets frozen. It sure is a cold hardy plant you find it at old homesteads still growing and all of the buildings have fallen down.

    Made 2 round pies with your recipe. Turned out perfect. Gave one to a neighbor couple, 45 years old, don't bake at all. They marveled at how good it was and how talented I am.
    I emailed them the link to your video and they have now made these twice. The next time their married daughter comes home they are going to teach her to make it. See what you did? LOL

    Have several Victoria rhubarb plants that I harvest. Love making and sharing rhubarb custard pies. I typically use 9" deep dish glass pie pans or for sharing 7" deep dish aluminum pans (disposable). Use Petty Crocker recipe but with only 2/3rd to 1/2 the sugar. The Victoria plants I have are fairly mild and require less sugar. For rhubarb sauce the rhubarb requires about 1 cup sugar to 5 cups rhubarb. Enjoyed your video.

    Hi Dale, I have a pile of rhubarb in my garden. Generally I simmer it in just a dab of water and make a lovely savory sauce for our chicken and turkey dishes. We don't eat sugar as a rule due to health issues... but I just might have to make this for a special treat once a year! Thanks!

    • @denisebozung126
      @denisebozung126 5 років тому +3

      The stems of the plant are fine to eat, but as you saw, Dale cut off the base and leaves, which are the poisonous parts. I'm not sure if the leaves would kill you, but you'd certainly get very sick from them.
      I've been trying to grow rhubarb in my garden here in Ohio for 20 odd years, but it never gets very big. (Of course, I haven't been fertilizing it either!) I grew up on rhubarb custard pie and didn't realize that there was any other way to make it into a pie. Mixing it with strawberries just dilutes the taste of the two, in my opinion.

      I have a funny story about the leaves . Years ago when I had goats I used to go to a just for fun goat show at the Kings Landing Historical site I was talking to an old gentleman who always brought a couple of kid goats that followed him around like puppy dogs when a woman arrived all up set and he asked her what the problem was and she said her goats had got out and eaten all of her rhubarb and she had just read that the leaves were poisonous to goats to which the old man replied, "There's another book my goats never read."

      There is still some of the Manchego ageing and a cheese that was supposed to be a cheddar but got over heated in the cheddering process so I'm not sure what it will be like in August when I trey it. I only do a new cheese video if I make a cheese that I haven't made a video on before.
