Great flick. Jude Law really nailed the playboy persona and upper class American accent from mid-century. And Gwyneth Paltrow's dagger eyes at Tom toward the end were great too. Marge knew, but the Greenleaf men didn't believe her and thought she was a silly paranoid woman.
I'm not sure if I remember right but I don't think they didn't believe her because they thought she was a silly paranoid woman. They didn't believe her because they thought Tom and Dickie were having an affair and that Tom was being a good guy by protecting Marge from finding out about the affair. So they understood that from Marge's point of view, Tom must have seemed to be behaving suspiciously. It's just that they thought they knew a reason for why he was behaving that way that they couldn't tell her.
@@Smithpolly I don't think Dickie's dad thought they were having an affair. (And he was the only Greenleaf man left.) He thought Dickie had killed Freddie and later himself and Tom was protecting him as much as possible and was a good guy. I'm not sure Mr. Greenleaf could hold in his mind the idea that Tom and Dickie were having an affair and that Tom was a good guy both. By the way, I do recommend the recent miniseries adaptation, _Ripley,_ with Andrew Scott.
A brilliant movie with an exceptional stacked cast! RIP to the great Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He was awesome in everything he was in. There’s a series coming on Netflix soon based on this movie and I can’t wait! Really enjoyed y’alls reactions to this!
The jazz motif was appropriate, because if there was one talent Ripley had, it was improvisation. You put him in any situation, and he can work with it. This movie is an underrated masterpiece, and every time I watch it, I see more and more in it.
This movie came out of left field and amazed me... one of the best plot dramas to come along in a long time... well acted, well written and well directed.
Another classic thriller you need to watch What ever Happened to Baby Jane. It's not in color, filmed in the 60s, staring Betty Davis, and Joan Crawford this movie was a hit the 60s. what ever Happened to Baby Jane
This movie is based on a book by Patricia Highsmith, and is one of the rare cases the movie is far better than the original storyline. --And it isn't really a happy ending for Tom either because he had to kill Peter Smith Kingsly at the end to ensure his safety, which is implied to be his lover and the only one that knows Tom's true sexuality. The whole film is about false identity on a multitude of levels. Also, it seems crazy to us now but indoor plumbing was very much a luxury esp in Europe, so bath water was often used by several people before it was drained, a lot of tubs had to be filled by hand or the water basin attached to it had to be filled by hand, plus the heating of the water was costly and took a long time, to name a few reasons.
Is the series worth reading though? It's been on my ginormous "To Read" list (since I first saw this movie in theatres when it came out) and after watching this reaction, I feel like it's finally time to read it.
Even though he got away with it, he ended up losing in the end. Peter actually cared for Tom, but he got rid of Peter to protect himself. I think he would have gotten rid of Marge, but she was with an entourage, which saved her life. Remember, he asked her if she was alone 😳
Also because narcissists become bored of people easily, so even though Tom liked the way he looked through Peter's eyes, Tom had to put in work to pretend he really was this great guy Peter thought. He didn't need Peter anymore because Meredith could now give him his supply. She thought he was perfect too, only Tom didn't have to pretend he was poor as a church mouse anymore in latching onto Meredith and her family, he could now pretend he was rich Dickie legitimately since Dickie's father gave him a trust fund of his own. And Tom wanted to live that highfalutin life.

I take it you haven't read the books, there's a whole series of Tom Ripley books & films - this is a remake of the 1960 French film starring Alain Delon " The Purple Noon"
There were rarely any happy endings during the 90's film era. Matt and Jude's acting was so great that Dickie's death still unnerves me when I've seen this at least 5 times.
Damon and Law were certainly very good in this film. However, the idea that there were rarely any happy endings during the 90's film era is simply not true.
I've never read the Patricia Highsmith novel on which this movie is based, but I understand that it is the first in a series detailing Tom Ripley's career; so I presume that he ends up getting away with several more murders in the end.
I've seen Ripleys Game with John Malkovich as Ripley based on a later book. He was a retired assassin in that movie. I assume the middle books he's working as an assassin
I cried the first time I watched the ending cause Peter was my favorite character and his fate is beyond tragic as the only person who loved Tom for who he was
I read the book. Which became a series of books. Ripley suffered a lot of bad things as a child. Hitchcock wanted to do this movie, but Ripley manages to get away with his deeds, which Hitchcock couldn't do since all the bad guys in his movies faced the consequences of their crimes. Patricia Highsmith was a terrific thriller writer. Every time it looks like Ripley will get caught, he manages to finesse his way out of trouble and get away with them. Highsmith was amazing at making you feel sympathy for the bad guy.
I had this movie on VHS and watched it regularly. Matt Damon was good in this one. You’re right Asia, Tom was totally jealous of and obsessed with Dickie. You could probably tell that Tom didn’t have many friends and was seen as awkward at some point in his life.
One of the best movies and great actors. Jude Law ❤. Tom was in love with Dickie's life and wanted to be Dickie so when Dickie got tired of him and rejected him, Tom couldn't take that he was losing his opportunity to be in Dickie's world and he lost it. Then he takes that opportunity to be Dickie . That's why Tom says "I always thought it would be better to be a fake somebody (Dickie) than a real nobody (himself).".
Aww, that was so cute when your doggie came up to Asia’s lap when Tom was killing Freddie…the little pupper kept looking at the movie, then at Mom and Dad, like, “Hey…what’s going on in this movie?” ❤
I think you guys would enjoy reacting to Big Trouble In Little China, starring Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall. It's full of action, has some humor, there’s a bit of mysticism/magic, and it has the love drama also.
I have only seen this movie once before but I brought the soundtrack back in the day because I enjoyed it so much in the movie. That is Matt Damon singing My Funny. Valentine ❤
