RIP to the 888,246 British soldiers who died in the first world war (including 2 of my great-great uncles and my great grandfather) and also the 73,905 Indian soldiers who died during the war.

It really is an injustice to the talent of the writers and actors of Blackadder to only watch tiny clips like this.
I'm sure you guys can spare time to watch full episodes so that you get to know the characters.
This end clip makes me cry every time.

I have to admit that I, a grown man in his 60s, started to tear up even though I have seen it before. Not at the final charge but at the comments of the soldiers before leaving the room. 😢

The most poignant bit for me is when Captain Darling says 'we lived it through it, the great wat 1914 - 1917' and of course we know what followed 🥲

Often missed are the many, many Indian soldiers who went over the top. Most of us have not forgotten how you stood with us. And we never will

The point of this was that this was the final episode in a great comedy set in WW1 in the Black Adder series. As it was the last episode they didn't know how to end a comedy in such a dreadful event as World War one. It was decided to pay respect to the Soldiers in that war and give it an ending which provoked emotional thought. When the scene going over the top was done running forward either by suggestion or other it was done in slow motion. With the Actors in slow motion it gave pathos a sadness and reality of the War to end the clever comedy. You should watch several episodes to fully understand the humour if you haven't already done so. The end was very clever the comedy gradually turning to reality of charge against the enemy .

Hi Folks, sadly, you missed the most important part by ending the clip early.
Had you allowed the clip to finish, you would have seen the field turn to red with poppies.
The poppy represents those killed in the war and is worn by almost everyone in the UK when we remember our fallen soldiers every year.

They didn't end the clip early. They are watching it from the BBC youtube channel, the channel it's self ends the clip before the poppies.

You missed the best bit has the greyness fades to front as is today...covered with poppies. It never fails to move me,. The audience reacting is absolutely quiet except for a man clearing his throat. The scenes of them going over the top were filmed live in another studio and beamed in to the other studio, for the audience to see. The explosives you see were a bit too powerful and nearly injured the cast note the bits of scenery hitting them. Watch all the Black Adder series they are brilliant.

Fun fact many soldiers on both sides seen Indians celebrating thier holiday, and that reminded them of Christmas and it was a big reason for christmas truce of 1914

Did you actually watch the series/ episode? This clip has no context otherwise and it is cut at the end. This is like watching the last 10 minutes of the Game of Thrones final. You don't know the characters or anything

@@LilMonkeyFella87 Yes that's always important especially with Black Adder as there's always more to the comedy than the obvious. They were a great cast .

Apparently young officers in the British Army are pressured to buy "Swagger-sticks", purely to stop them putting their hands in their pockets. They are literally useless. Officers are meant to keep the soldiers busy all day with one kind of training or activity or another so that they don't become bored and stand around with their hands in their pockets, but no-one keeps the officers busy enough in the same way, so they are supposed to hold swagger-sticks to look like they are doing something.
That particular edit of that ending of the final episode sucks, because it cuts out the wipe to poppies growing in a field, implying everyone died, and all that remains is the poppies as the memorial to those horrifying battles. It removes some of the sadness of the scene, which is very wrong.

there should have been red poppies at the ending to honour the dead, though it cuts out too early.

My grandad was born in the East end of London and had to work and go to school, both were a bit grim. Then he joined the British army, at a young age, to escape. Firstly he was sent to India, which he loved and could speak the language to some degree. Then ww1 started and he got shipped there from 1914 to 1918. During that time he was shot several times going over the top, climbing over his dead friends. I know he didn't like Winston Churchill. The point in question is, he wrote quite a lot during that time and it was far superior to my level which makes me wonder, intelligence isnt necessarily passed on through genetics.

Through out the blackadder series, blackadder always had an hier to carry on the bloodline. But the last series blackadder had no hier so the bloodline stopped when he went over the top. And thats why we never got any more series. Quite a poignant way to finish. (Altho there was speculation thst he fathered a child with the nurse).

You stopped that a little too soon - should have waited until the very end. Also, it is far better to see the full episode so you get some ide of who the characters are. The jokes do not work if you do not see the whole eipsode. Some jokes done work unless you have seen the previous 5 episodes of this series. Please go back to Episode 1 and watch the whole series.

Millions dead and wounded during the First World War.
    Many tonnes of explosives.
    A multitude of bullets.
What ended the war? A bunch of, as they called them, “Big Knobs” sitting around a table and signing a document with a pen.
The pen truly is mightier than the sword, or other weapons unless one side annihilates the other first. 😞
