Please, don’t EVER play a straight 8th note feel on “Johnny B. Goode”

- I was recently reminded of a gig years ago where someone requested this song and the guitar player gave me the most confused look ever when I came in on drums. I don’t think he ever paid attention to the fact that the drums swing against the more straight 8th note feel of the guitar. Sure, if you want to sound like a bad bar band you could just just play the drums straight, but that’s not what the song is. The drums have to straddle that swung/straight line.
That's like most rock'n'roll from the 50's and early 60's. It's still so deeply rooted in the other forms that came together to create it, it retains that "bouncy" rhythm.
It's like the bridges in Walk, Don't Run. Most people play a straight 8th note all the way through it, but it actually changes to a swing beat in those sections.
Cool lesson, and I love that kit. Thanks for showing us that.
Outstanding. So many rock songs are swung, some folks dont get that. Great job,as usual. Keep them coming, please !
Nicely done! Hard feel to nail, not quite the full “triplet” swing and definitely not straight 8ths. Just right 👌
P.S the one that is funny to me is Run Run Rudolf, the 8ths swing more at the end of the track than the beginning.
big you up cobb my man
Yes! 56.356% Well done, GROOVEKING!!
As a guitar player, I apologize on behalf of my brethren for those that don't bother to listen to the rhythm section...or the songs at all past the 1st chorus in any sort of detail.
Great performance of a true classic! Thanks for posting and for playin' it right.😎
Brilliant
This is awesome!
Now I know why every time I've heard this played in a pub it sounds wrong!,
Fantastic playing as always.
Yes!!! This was part of the Chess sound, Early King sound and other early R&B/rock labels. Their rhythm sections were usually guys with jazz backgrounds. Willie Dixon also swings on the bass a bit too. The swinging drums are what MAKE the track though.
Nice PSA ❤
THANK YOU for confirming this for me! I always felt like the drums during this early CB period had a heavy swing while the guitars and vocals did not. Not just this song but most other CB songs as well. Was that intentional or was that just what big band drummers were used to playing at that time?
It was intentional, and is in one, a part of the meaning behind the term rock n' roll - juxtaposing a straight eighth against a dotted eight note (or 'slightly swung) feel.
The 'rock' being the straight eighth's, the 'roll' being the dotted/slighted swung eighth's. Also, here's a video clip with Steve Jordan giving a demo & explaination of the concept: ua-cam.com/video/1NswliqEAWk/v-deo.htmlsi=8VOw-kzAlLxc8uAR
Cool
Great rendition as always. I'm hearing a swing on the original (spang a lang thingy) although I pretty lost all my top end hearing by 2005 🤣🙄
Love that feel. Now do Sweet Little Sixteen! Trying to think of all the classic that use the mixed feel. Little Richard has straight piano against swung drums on a lot of tracks. Jailhouse Rock ... what are some of the others?
You're right... shuffle. It's clearly heard in the piano (or the vocals) on Chucks' original recording. But the 'Breaks' are straight 1/8's, the rest are triplets.
Hmm... but the drums are not shuffle. They are not straight forward either. It sounds like a jazz drummer trying to play straight forward, but can´t get out of the swing. Interesting "mix"! :)
@@jokervienna6433 Watch Ryan's right hand ( 1 let 2 let 3 let 4 let). That's the shuffle. Fred Below played a mixture along with the 'ding ding a ding' pattern. Fred Below was a killer R&B/Blues drummer. Most real blues and R&B are in 6/8.
Straight ahead. Listen to johnny winter live do this
Classic song from the great Chuck Bez! Yeah no I'd never dream of playing straight 8's along to this one. Way too open and doesn't sound right IMO. As usual, expertly played on some killer gear. 10/10.
Hang on there, that is a straight 8 on your RH !??
Sounds like 16ths, but they're 8ths, so you had me thinking there for a couple of minutes. 🙄
@@jemmace2586huh??
Thank you! 👍🏻
@vintagedrummer79 if you're counting 2/4 they're 8ths. If you're counting 4/4, they're 8ths as well, or am I missing something??
Oooooo almost got up runnign to get my guitar.
Dude ! You are on fire, throwing vids al over the place.
AWESOME!!!!!
maaaan!!
Thanks man!
whats so bad anyway?.... xD this is funny tho
I know a couple of fine drummers who played for Chuck in Europe. They never mentioned anything. Chuck is fun not technobabble. If this was the case then they would still have the bruises. Chuck was a sharp mind.
Do you mind telling what cymbals you're using? Thanks.
