Building Mechanical Devices - Starship EVO (Early Access)

- In this video I'll be showing how to make three useful mechanical devices; A door, an elevator platform and a hinged canopy.
I also have a few extra at the end to demonstrate a few uses for pistons and hinge blocks; A drawbridge and a fair-ground claw machine (well, maglock. I guess I could've put a claw on it for effect)
Starship EVO is in early access and is available on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/71...
I've also gotten a bit more used to using OpenShot for editing the videos, and have expanded the video so that it doesn't have the black bars top and bottom. - Ігри
I feel the same vibe as back in the old days of the dawn of Minecraft, when it was almost unknown.
Your videos have taught me how to operate in this game today! Thank you so much. So much fun
You're welcome, glad to be of help!
I love your videos. I hope you continue to make more.
Thank you, when the current set of changes moves from experimental to the stable branch I'll do some more.
As there's quite a large change to building techniques and a fair few additions too.
It should fuel content updates for a while :)
Your videos are realy good, you deserve more subscribers!
Thank you! I'm sure I'll get more subs over time. I only started being more active a few months ago :)
Nice vid!
This game is next level
i found you useful after 4 hrs of fightin with canopy designs and did not know about the logic controller. lol
Glad I could be of help. I'm trying to build myself up again to do some more tutorials since the game has had updates recently.
Aww man, your videos aren't ultrawide anymore :( I was so glad your videos where, so few are.
While I do record in ultrawide, all my videos so far have been uploaded in 1920 x 1080. It's just I finally figured out how to get the video editing software to zoom in and get rid of the letter boxing :p
Call it an experiment, as I may switch back again since the editing software started to lag really bad for some reason
grate vid thanks
I started watching you after i got into Starship EVO again a few weeks ago and i was wondering if there is any way you would review builds of your subscribers or something along these lines?
Oh yes! That would be awesome!
I've had someone ask me this via my ArtStation profile and I'm a bit hesitant to do this at the moment.
I'll have to think about it and also build up more experience with building full ships before I can start talking about what others have done.
There's already been a few people reviewing ships on the Starship EVO Discord who'll be better set up for reviewing than I am.
I kinda like being the tutorial/experimental person :)
I learned recently that you can daisy chain buttons together to avoid logic gates for a simple button to open a door. All you do is connect a switch to the rail, connect a button to the switch, then connect another button to the first button. Not sure how far this goes though. I’ll have to test it.
Nice one dude....FYI..the medbay has been moved to the stable branch, as of the last update. Also, i see that there is also a jump pad that has been added to stable branch as well.
I've have to jump back into stable to see. I hadn't been checking as I there's only been experimental branch updates on the Github this past month since the medbays were added to experimental.
Also I think jump pads have been in stable for a while. I did try one and it was well OP. Good for making traps I suppose ;)
Fire people out the side of spaceships :D
OMG this helped me so much. Thank you. I have only been playing with this for about two months and have no history of using logic gates. I was having to double click on external door switches and it was pissing me off. Now that I have cleared that hurdle, I need to work out a multi-stage door that slides open and pushes out a ramp that drops down to become a ramp. I would find any help with that very useful.
I do have a couple of videos that show multi-stage mechanisms. The one that shows landing gear has multi-stage. I'll post a link once I'm back on my PC
Here's the link to the multistage video: ua-cam.com/video/moIfoUVQ_AU/v-deo.html
And here's the one to the landing gear one, where I cover the general process again: ua-cam.com/video/Y5RsHP-LOsg/v-deo.html
the building is very similar to scrap mechanic, just a bit more advanced
Nice video, but how do i unlock the small sliding rail?
Hi @plauze82, sorry this video was uploaded 2 years ago and the game has changed a fair amount since then.
It changed that much that the tutorial videos I was making were being made invalid within the space of a few weeks. (Yes I know its early access, but these where fundamental game behaviour changes)
I'm currently waiting for the game to stabilise some more before I jump in and try making videos on it again.
Could we get an example on how to use the query gates? It seems like nothing can connect to them, and I can see that they were not covered in your logic tutorial.
I briefly cover them at ua-cam.com/video/sqfGAIfs3uU/v-deo.html, it was near the end of the video. Not many people reach that far into UA-cam videos these days.
I guess I'll have to learn to break them apart into shorter sessions
Maybe once I've gotten a bit more used to query gates I can do a video for them
@@curioinventorium Thank you!
2 buttons on 1 switch: you don't need a logic gate. You can link the 1st button to the 2nd button and that to the switch.
Lol, I hadn't thought of trying it that way.
I guess I'd been working from a different modular perspective
@@curioinventorium totally valid. Different approach. Yours may be easier to understand (for a third person) when you have a lot of buttons for 1 switch, mine is a little bit faster and you save 1 block, but would not do it to cascade more than 2 buttons.
Please, can you make a video showing how to place the canopy blocks? I've been trying to place it in the past few days with no success, the attachment point is different from the one you have in your video, now it's on the bottom of the canopy
I was planning on doing a fresh build tutorial this past weekend but got distracted.
There's a lot of new stuff I need to cover, especially since some of the logic blocks have changed. My videos I kind of out of date now :(
I also tried to reply to your last message, but the youtube app kept hiding it when I tried to view it.
@@curioinventorium Thank you so much!
Yeah I did delete it since I thought I've figured it out, but I didn't. I'm sorry!
I'm looking forward to that video, as your content is good and you know a lot about this game :)
I've learned and done so much already just by watching this video!
I've uploaded a tutorial video on ship building ua-cam.com/video/fZdOdLXtKPY/v-deo.html , there's a bit on adding a canopy to a hinge block around 17 minutes. Hopefully it'll help.
I'm going to have to find some better video editing software as this took so long to do, another update came out :/
What's the extra icon you have on your tools section next to the space station join tool?
Do you have a timestamp on where this is, or an edited image of what you are talking about?
melvyn1970 its a copy-paste tool, apparently hes playing on experimental
Yeah it's the copy/paste tool. I mention at ua-cam.com/video/CoadfAHiuxI/v-deo.html that I'm on experimental :D
Just got the game and trying to follow this tutorial, but I keep being told that I can't place blocks in various places, for example alongside the rail, as you have done. What am I missing/doing wrong?
As an example, if I put down a small rail 6 blocks long and then put a small 6-block unit alongside it, I can't then put a small block on the rail. If I do it the other way round by putting the rail down first and then putting a small block on it, I can't then put a small block on either side of the rail, level with the block.
OK, after a bit of trial and error I may have resolved this. It seems to be to do with the position of the rail, although not sure why. If I can't place a block I move the rail to the other end, then I can place it.
Sorry it's taken so long for me to respond, UA-cam is a quite inconsistent with notifying me when someone has left a comment. I'm not sure what could be happening in your case.
Maybe it's something that I automatically work around now and never notice.
Next time I'm playing I'll see if I can replicate the problem.
@@curioinventorium Many thanks.
Ive been trying to replicate your problem, but can't seem to do it.
One thing I suppose, is to be aware of what the mouse pointer is over before trying to place a block.
Also make sure that the block isn't being stretched into the rail as you place it.
How about a canopy not on a hinge, but on a rail.
It's doable, I can't remember if I mentioned it in the video, or if it was in a section I deleted during editing. I have to cut out a lot of verbal rambling :)
I'll see about demo'ing one next time I do a build video
Contact me on discord some time, maybe we can collaborate on elevators or something similar.
At some point yeah, but I've always been more of a solo player. It takes me ages to even go online with friends I've known back from my school days! :p
