- The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War.
The long-range P-51 Mustang fighter was invaluable to the Allied victory, enabling resumption of strategic bombing after heavy losses suffered by unescorted bombers in 1943. Developed for export to Britain, models modified by the British to use Rolls-Royce Merlin engines became America's most capable wartime fighters.
The Packard V-1650 Merlin is a version of the Rolls-Royce Merlin aircraft engine, produced under license in the United States by the Packard Motor Car Company. The engine was licensed to expand production of the Rolls-Royce Merlin for British use roughly 1490HP.

Engineering poetry. Totally badass
That paint scheme is off the charts. Is that original ? Beautiful bird.
As a kid helping out around the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo, NY, a guy from the Buffalo area would occasionally fly his P51-D (though technically a Cavalier F51D built in 1967? Had two seats! Would have done almost anything for a ride.) Into the field. The sound. Oh God the sound. Absolutely glorious. Pure flying sexy machine.
Six shooter was the name.
One of the best aircraft engine sounds period.
I’d love to fly one…
Outstanding video and presentation.
FYI British never put the Merlin in the Mustang, they had the idea as soon as the 60 series 2 stage merlin was developed and cobbled up 4 test mules but it was North American Aviation that reengineered and built all the Production Merlin Mustangs using only the PACKARD re engineered and modified and Built in America merlins for all production merlin Mustangs !!! And those PACKARD MERLINS do sing their song !!!! FREEEEEEEDOM !!!!!!
I've *always* loved Mustangs with that shiny chrome finish and wondered how they got that finishing touch. Hopefully, this coming January, I'll get the chance to fly in a Mustang at Stallion51 in Florida.

Race car mode 🤣
These engines were made by "Studebaker"...the same ones that made the car.
