For the passionate Veena students who wish to understand the gamakas in Veena playing, I’m going to give an insight into this aspect.
Gamakas are embellishments that add variety to the Swaras, through which we aim to bring about the correct emotions in the music that we render.
For the sake of beginners, first I would like to stress the importance of playing plain notes in every raga that you attempt and then move on to understand the gamaka movements.
There is no "one single formula" for gamaka methods and it varies from artist to artist , since this is an expression of the performer to present his or her music in a graceful manner.
The expression of the composer is also to be followed in each composition that we render.
Firstly, I will explain the raga Mayamalavagowla and the basic idea of bringing in gamakas to its swaras.
In the next session we will take up the term ‘ anuswara’ and it’s impact on gamakas.
I will be explaining the movement of every swara in the arohana and avarohana of the raga Maya malavagowla.
Following is the explanation of how it is demonstrated in the video (as I mentioned earlier, it is for the beginners and it may vary according to the individual artist’s perception)
S-Play it as a jaaru ( glide) from D1 to S in second string
R- play it as a kampita gamaka in S note ,in second string (4 small deflections)
G-Play it as a jaaru ( glide) from R 1 to G 2 and give kampita gamaka (in the first string
M- play it as a plain note in M1
