The Tudor Black Bay P01 is the most interesting dive watch in the Tudor watch catalog. Launched in 2019, the Tudor P01 was an instant lightning rod for controversy. At 42mm and unconventionally shaped, this is a large and imposing sports watch that makes no attempt to be conventional or broadly popular. The result is a cult watch with tremendous charisma and hard-edged charm.
The 1967 prototype watch that inspired the Black Bay P01 was raw and industrial; so is the modern recreation. Unlike the conventional Tudor Black Bay dive watches, the P01 makes no obvious references to Rolex and Tudor Submariners of the 1950s and 1960s. Start with the P01 case; it’s huge for a 42mm watch. At 55.7mm from lug-to-lug, the Tudor P01 feels like an AP Royal Oak Offshore on the wrist; no wrist smaller than 16cm circumference is likely to find success with this Black Bay.
Tudor opted to keep the P01 as close to the original as possible, so the severe case shape, off-center crown, lug design, and 12-hour bezel were retained. A locking system secures the bi-directional bezel when it needs to hold station. Only the dial of the Black Bay P01 differs significantly from the vintage prototype. While the 1967 Tudor employs a conventional dial with Rolex-style “Mercedes” hour hand, the modern P01 includes the Tudor “Snowflake” hand design seen on late 1960s and mid 1970s Tudor Submariners.
Internally, the P01 is identical to the standard Tudor Pelagos. Tudor automatic caliber MT5612 includes a 70-hour power reserve, a COSC Swiss chronometer certification, and an antimagnetic silicon hairspring. Hacking seconds and a quickset date also are included, and the case is water resistant to 200 meters.

That Moonwatch is nearly perfect. Now imagine a Moonwatch reference with applied indices/logo, sapphire crystal, solid case back, and *ceramic* bezel insert, with the new 3861 movement and master chronometer certification. Not a limited or special edition but a version of the standard "professional" watch.

Beautiful selection of watches, as always Tim, but that vintage Omega Phase de Lune Triple Calendar rather unexpectedly stole the show as far as I’m concerned.

That vintage Omega is outrageous! Looks like something Vacheron would make now for many multiples of the price of the Omega.

My thoughts exactly the first second the watch was presented, I thought it was a VC. Omega has the best vintage models of all the brands. Too bad they stopped trying.

Truly remarkable timepieces, Tim! I am in awe of the skill it requires to create such watches.
The P01 is much maligned, but I won’t be surprised at all if it became the most collectible of all Black Bays. The BB58 is everyone’s darling but could turn out to be a ‘dime a dozen’ in years to come. I own (and adore) a Tudor Heritage Ranger, wish I had purchased a North Flag before it was discontinued as prices are already creeping up, and would love to add a P01 to my collection before it is discontinued also.

My Tudor Black Bay S&G also has the MT5612. It’s the movement used on all the Black Bays with date complication and the Pelagos.

I have been wanting to treat myself with a luxury watch for a bit. I saw the ressence and its so damned cool but the price tag is so steep. Settled with the p01. LIke it so far. One thing I would like to add to your wonderful review is that the crown on the p01 is the beefiest of the watches I have owned. Marathon Gsar, seiko 1000m tuna, all watches tough as nails but their crown stem is tiny compared to the p01. The size of the crown tube that the crown screws onto is impressive. The thing was 1/8 of an inch in diameter. The crown just feels so sturdy. And a mechanical watch is honestly only as good as its crown.

A lot to like this morning Tim, I find the PO1, strangely, quite attractive and have seriously considered one before, but I'm afraid it might be too big for my wrist. Also that strange leather strap sort of lets down the rugged tool watch esthetic and when the leather is perished, you'll have limited choices for replacement. Either of the PP Calatravas look better to me then a Nautilus, especially the 6007. I could see myself wearing that ....if I could afford it! On the other hand, that Portugueser hand wind is both classy and affordable. Love that movement. Too much eye candy to mention everything noteable but thanks for showing it.

Most custom strap makers would happily craft a strap for a P1, and it's not as expensive as you would think.
I got mine from Mansarea, a maker in spain and couldn't be happier.
Regarding the size, it's indeed true that it has a large footprint, wouldn't recommend for a wrist smaller than 17cm/6 3/4inches...

The P01 i find very cool. I do get the bezel lock, but i don't see why it has to be so massive. That bezel lock system could've been executed with much shorter lugs. But i guess it is exaggerated by design, to highlight the feature. Unique for sure. David Beckham wears his quite well.

Those JLC’s. - wow! I’m more of a simple, three-handed watch fan but I most definitely give credit where it’s due. Amazing pieces!
Ha ha; you took the word right out of my mouth in describing that Streamliner bracelet - Ebel! Exactly what I thought it looks like when that model first came out. I have to think that a purple dial variant would be cool!
That HM&C tourbillon - very cool! The case/crystal remind me of the Corum Bubble.
I love those hunter care backs; I wished they were more common.
That Portugieser is also offered on green and red dials. I’d love to see them in person.
Those Voutilainens - amazing! A salmon dial version with blued steel dial hardware/printing would be amazing!

  • @fadiinspace

I don’t understand sapphire case backs with printed emblems on the crystal. It goes against the whole point of having a display case back. A solid engraved case back is way preferable.

The split second (hypothetically) after I purchased the P01, I’d get the worst buyer’s remorse EVER, UNLESS I’m in a Titanic (hanging on the edge of a rescue boat) situation. Is it still listed in the Tudor catalog????
