- Three Dog Night - The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour (14 Sept 1971) - An Old Fashioned Love Song
Three Dog Night is an American rock band. They formed in 1967 with a line-up consisting of vocalists Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron. The band registered 21 Billboard Top 40 hits (with three hitting number one) between 1969 and 1975.
"An Old Fashioned Love Song" is a 1971 song written by Paul Williams and performed by the American pop-rock band Three Dog Night. Chuck Negron performed the lead vocal on this track. Taken as the lead single from their 1971 album, Harmony, the song peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 1971, becoming the band's seventh top-ten hit. It was Three Dog Night's first record to top the U.S. easy listening chart.
The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour was an American network television music and comedy variety show hosted by singer Glen Campbell from January 1969 through June 1972 on CBS. He was offered the show after he hosted a 1968 summer replacement for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Campbell used "Gentle on My Mind" as the theme song of the show. The show was one of the few rural-oriented shows to survive CBS's rural purge of 1971.

Glen Travis Campbell (born April 22, 1936) is an American rock and country music singer, guitarist, songwriter, television host, and occasional actor. He is best known for a series of hits in the 1960s and 1970s, and for hosting a music and comedy variety show called The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on CBS television from January 1969 through June 1972.
During his 50 years in show business, Campbell has released more than 70 albums. He has sold 45 million records and accumulated 12 RIAA Gold albums, four Platinum albums and one Double-platinum album. He has placed a total of 80 different songs on either the Billboard Country Chart, Billboard Hot 100, or the Adult Contemporary Chart, of which 29 made the top 10 and of which nine reached number one on at least one of those charts. Campbell's hits include his recordings of John Hartford's "Gentle on My Mind"; Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", "Wichita Lineman", and "Galveston"; Larry Weiss's "Rhinestone Cowboy"; and Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights".
Campbell made history in 1967 by winning four Grammys total, in the country and pop categories.[2] For "Gentle on My Mind", he received two awards in country and western, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" did the same in pop. Three of his early hits later won Grammy Hall of Fame Awards (2000, 2004, 2008), while Campbell himself won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. He owns trophies for Male Vocalist of the Year from both the Country Music Association (CMA) and the Academy of Country Music (ACM), and took the CMA's top award as 1968 Entertainer of the Year. In 1969, actor John Wayne picked Campbell to play alongside him in the film True Grit, which gave Campbell a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer. Campbell sang the title song which was nominated for an Academy Award.
Alzheimer's diagnosis...
In June 2011, Campbell announced he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease six months earlier. According to his family, symptoms of the disease had been occurring for years, becoming more and more evident as the years progressed.
Campbell went on a final "Goodbye Tour", with three of his children joining him in his backup band; his final show was on November 30, 2012, in Napa, California.[During the tour's concerts and rehearsals, Campbell would often forget which songs he was supposed to play, repeating them after finishing a performance. He also frequently had to be reminded that he did have the disease, and relied on a teleprompter to remember the lyrics to most songs. Newer songs from his later albums had to be scrapped altogether, as Campbell struggled to remember the chords and lyrics for these. He performed "Rhinestone Cowboy" as a goodbye at the 2012 Grammy Awards ceremony held on February 12, 2012, his final televised on-stage performance.
In April 2014, news reports indicated that Campbell had become a patient at an Alzheimer's long-term care and treatment facility. On March 10, 2015, NBC News reported that Campbell could no longer speak for himself and that two of his children, Debby and Travis, had sought legal action against Campbell's wife Kim, with the assertion that she had "secluded" the singer and prevented them from "participating" in Campbell's medical care.
The 70's, such a simpler, happier time
Amen
Miss the old USA. what’s happening to our country is sad. Loved this music.
We’re all just so divided as a country, it’s a shame we’ll probably never be as United as we once were
I totally agree. I'm 65 and there was an explosion of great music in America in the 60s 70s and '80s and now there's much less.
it's bad here. We are falling to fascism. If the Dems don't do well November the Republicans will finish democracy off, take away our Social Security we worked all our lives for, stop Medicare, Medicaid & other things they've mapped out. It's bad. trump has poisoned gullible people. sorry. but we are really concerned here and you mentioned it, so...
Do you know why it's happening?
Underrated group right here.......how many groups have 3 guys alternate on Lead? they had great songs, great harmony
Jon Milburn Early Chicago had three. Very rare. TDN were great.
The Beatles. Jefferson Airplane. Eagles. Fleetwood Mac.
Umm.....under-rated? They had 21 top 40 hits and sold over 50 million records.
But yes, 3 lead singers was unusual for the time.
@@mfsb8473 thx for comment. There's a difference in being successful selling records which, yeah, they were. It's just when you ask folks the big groups of the 70's they don't seem to get mentioned much. No Hall of Fame recognition (although the Hall is kind of a joke) . I just think they were better than they get credit for from a lot of folks......I loved 'em
@@jonmilburn5259 It may be largely because all their hits were written by others.
I love Three dog night but you got to admit this video is hysterical.
med ferry:
I’ll bet they all wanted to cut their own throats for being forced to wear those lame get ups.
No use denying it! :-) But boy, do they wear these duds with swagger.
Very Lawrence Welk-ish.
..when you gotta wear your sister's clothing...lol
@@robertallen6710 😂😂
loved 'em back in the day.... I didn't care that they never wrote any of their songs...
They had a truly unique sound, with hits that outsold everyone else for five years. Now 40+ years later their works have stood up - Shambala, Celebrate & Joy are true CLASSICS. We miss Cory, Danny still tours, and Chuck finally had his life together...
Dont forget the beautiful “Out in the Country”.
They owed their success and unprecedented run of albums and singles sold, concert seats filled, and plain old popularity to the great number of superb songwriters that they got material from. Equally important, they took cast off songs from other groups that weren't at all recorded well and re-arranged the material to make the most of the songs with their strongpoints - their eclectic voices and superb harmonizing. For 4 - 5 years they were he top dogs!
They did not outsell everyone for 5 years.
In addition they lucked out with the best writers supplying them the material
Great group ...great times....can we go back
Chuck’s voice was sublime
Stunning
What a great group this was.
This is what it was all about, just having fun with the music. The 70s were such a magical time👍
God, Three Dog Night, CCR and the Doors.. 60’s and 70’s are just so bitchin’.
It may be "Just an old fashioned love song", but it's GREAT!!
I had this song in my head and needed to come and listen. Beautiful ❤️
Almost miss the variety show era; always fun to see the rock stars of the day at their best.
So much talent here🎶🎵🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Cory takes a puff of his cigarette and lets it right in Chucks face! They laugh. Great song!
Kids today just wouldn't understand this music.
They sure wouldn't! I'm 57, so I got in on the tail end of it, but still...
Their loss
I’m 53, my son is 22...I’m going to send this to him to get his reaction, he’s a musician incidentally.
You’d be surprised! Kids are rediscovering it. Look up “Three Dog Night” reaction videos.
This takes me way back when i was lost and when I'd here this song i thought i was in ⛪ thank you three dog 🌙 . jesus saves. God bless you and r.i.p cory wells
So many Hits they made, and they have Stood the Test of Time!🎵🎼
Most underrated band. My favorite in the 1970's.
This song was originally written for the Carpenters. Richard Carpenter rejected it and Paul Williams gave it to Three Dog Night to record.
I love the Carpenters but I can't imagine anyone else singing this.
Did not know that. The Carpenters probably thought it was not really a good fit for Karen. Seems more like a guy oriented vocal.
Sooo glad the Carpenters turned it down!!!
@@donniemoder1466 Maybe the Carpenters did not reject. 3 Dog did Out in the Country on an earlier album. Written by Paul Williams
@@floatsting20 yea, it was part of a package of 3 demos paul had written, out in the country, old fashioned love song, we've only just begun. 3 dog had picked out in the country in '69, carpenters picked we've only in '70, chuck chose old fashioned lastly.
Wow ... this is terrific ... here's to the good old days of Three Dog Night. Twas NEVER a group quite like them ....
Pretty cool. From the first time I stumbled across these guys on TV I knew they were something special. Singers who could actually SING.
@Best Player On the field I was in Pacific Stereo on Vanowen in N. Hollywood one day snooping around at the receivers and speakers. I heard the clerks talking about 3 Dog Night and looked towards the cash register and saw a guy buying a stack of blank reel to reel tapes.
I don't know if the guy was a band member, go-fer or someone from a recording studio. Should have paid more attention. Also saw Elvis' guitarist James Burton carrying a stack of KFC lunches out to his red Cadillac convertible in Burbank one afternoon but was too shy to approach him.
This may be the most 70s thing I have ever seen!
Love Three Dog Night...especially "Shambala"
Cory was the best!
Eli's Coming, Try A Little Tenderness, Never Been To Spain, Let Me Serenade You, Mama Told Me Not To Come, ect. Love shambala as well. One of my faves.
My so favorite song Shambala❤❤❤🤙 Aloha from Pepeekei, HI 😘😘😘
I lived in Dallas when Shambala came out. The only version of the song getting air play was that of Dallas native B.W. Stevenson who recorded the song at about the same time. I didn't hear the 3DN version until after I left Dallas.
As a kid, I never could stand any kind of Country Music, or Western movies or TV shows, but I just loved the Glenn Campbell show.
📻🙂
Love Chuck's voice. Heard him back aways at the Moondog Coronation Ball in Cleveland. He still had a pretty good voice.
I wonder what they thought of those outfits at that 50's type restaurant!! Love This Band,Always Have,Always Will!!😍😍😍
Cory Wells was my fav! RIP
Mine, too. I miss seeing TDN with Cory.
He was mine too, but Chuck had the best vocal pipes
Loved Corey Wells, he was the one
Underated, this trio destroyed everything in its path for about half a decade
How I loved Three Dog Night. I saw them in concert in 1969 or '70. However, I was working as a maid in a motel where they stayed, and I could tell you stories about the mess we had to clean up in their suite the next day -- and No, I was not party to that mess. Legendary! I still love them.
Woman of Substance I would have tried to meet them and party with them,
Is this team was famous in past time
I loved them from Iraq
You can tell the gist of your stories, surely.
They were great and loved their voices! The outfits crack me up !
John Wayne, Glen Campbell and Three Dog Night. That was the ‘70s, kittens.
Wow...wow...wow...this is Gold...love this...tq

@@Shayra2you No. Purrrrr
They looked like they were enjoying themselves.
fun fact: Chuck Negron was a really good basketball player and played college ball at Hancock JUCO and Cal State LA. Reading his bio he was "a great shooter and would've benefited from having a 3 point line"
This group of guys ruled back in the day and still do as good music and real talent never dies!!!
wow i can remember this playing in my Fathers 1971 Premier .
Brings back great memories...
The first album I ever bought was Harmony by Three Dog Night, because it had this song on it. For people my age, Three Dog Night was the gateway band. Start with the sweet stuff and move on to harder & harder bands. Maybe to the Doobie Brothers, then on to Aerosmith, and eventually Rush & AC/DC.
Ine of best of all time bands, also Chicago with Cetera and Kath lamm et c . My favorite bands. Beatles were great but these had unique styles a mind versatility
I've had a crush on Chuck since I was 10 years old! 💕
THREE DOG NIGHT ON. THE GLEN CAMPELL SHOW....JUST AN OLD FASHION LOVE SONG.
I want to start a Three Dog Night tribute band and call them Chuck Negron's Mustache 😀
I'm down been listening to them A LOT lately. I'm a millennial btw
Ahhh yesssss, back in the days when you could smoke on tv. 😅
THREE ❤️ DOG ❤️ NIGHT
nice ! i want to learn how to play the beginning intro to this song on my electric piano keyboard ! lol :)
@Woman of Substance; I would love to hear stories of your time working at the hotel they stayed at:) I’m reading Chuck’s book and it is riveting. All the drugs he took, and he performed well and looked good. How he survived all that is a miracle.
The one that died is the one that didn’t do drugs 🤔
This was a cool moment.A great singing trio and their music still gets played a lot at my place!
Love their song "One is the loneliest number" best.
Freakin one of the best bands of the 70s!
Thanks for posting.
How the heck are they NOT in the R & R Hall of Fame????? Or the Monkees???? What a joke.
Oh my God-really?! i don't think Peter Frampton is in it either. Or Jethro Tull...Jan Wenner made a mockery of the whole thing and it is indeed a complete joke! I just checked and Frampton actually just made it in after 26 years of eligibility-only a couple of weeks ago! Ridiculous!
The number one band in the 70s
I remember all songs of them, however two songs are the best like " an old fashion love song" and " easy to be hard" I love this two songs.
Happy is Joy to the World, and Mama Told Me Not To Come always makes me laugh. Loved these guys.
@@Pashasmom1 Eli coming
🥰 Glenn and Corey are gone now. Saw them a few years back before Cory passed.
Sadly, Cory, Jimmy and Joe are all deceased.
@@gregbrown8954 Them and Chicago were the bomb of the 70s
Nice harmony. Note the fade and jump cut at 2:30 to a completely different costume set, it's like it was a music video rather than a live recording. And the smoking while singing! A true 'whiskey voice' or like some pro athletes they're so good they can smoke and still perform great.
Do you actually believe that was a live performance?
Say it isn't so.
Song came out five months after “Joy To The World” was number one and the Iron Eyes Cody “Crying Indian” ad first aired! This is why I’m a big 70’s TV and music guy!
My fav song
Beautiful song 🙏
RIP Cory Wells
How can anybody forget The Band? Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Levon Helm.
LOVE ❤️ THEIR OUTFITS. LOL
Love this group. But 1972 Cory Wells songs are my fav.
😄😄😄😄 MY 1ST 45 !!!!!
OK...So John Wayne stops by to say Hello.... Then Three-Dog-Night stops in to sing a hit....Then the host is Glen Campbell, great guitarist...I don't know of any TV show today that come close to this talent !!
ck those sideburns on Glenn. They don't wear em like that anymore. Always thought they were great!
America's BEST!!!!!
The DUKE!!!!!!!!!!! Whoever thought this skit up was smoking good stuff.
Sometimes I mark time by important events that occurred on tv. The great guitarist Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band was killed in a motorcycle accident 6 weeks after this show. He was the Godfather of Southern Rock, and was once named the second greatest rock guitarist after Jimi Hendrix by Rolling Stone magazine.
watch the tanglewood concert 25 or 6 to 4 Terry Kath on lead. The guy Hendrix said was better than he was.
What a fine group of talent for the time era . Glen Campbell still in my book as a great among Three Dog Night also . The scenes in this presentation corny and I am sure Cory , Chuck and Danny thought little about the way it was produced . The band , MIchael , Joe Floyd , Jimmy just along for the ride .
Best cover band ever!
Three dog sang their big hit “ Joy to the World “ later in the show but unfortunately Glen Campbell had to intervene taking the spotlight away from Three Dog and you could see the dismay on their faces. Glen Campbell was always brilliant and a master with the Wrecking Crew. Don’t know why he felt he had to help Three Dog Night sing there biggest money maker.
🔥
That bands were made to lip-sync on tv shows back then (and some today) is absolutely criminal.
Donna Summer refused to perform if she had to lip sync.
@@Pashasmom1 she's one of the best! Great lady!

Looks like "'Ole Five Legs" was starting to make a surprise appearance at the start of the video .. 😲 Thank God for the T.V. censors he was just a gelding and not a stallion .. 😬
did this song @ karaoke on february 1 easy song to do and also a great song
Cory looking kind of feminine with that yellow blouse. Love them still!
8track classic
Wow!!!
A great Era.
England had the BeeGees, America had Three Dog Night.
The BEEGEES were Australian
@@michaelstratton6701 they were all born and raised for a time in England so they were both.
Bunni Armani did 3DN write their songs?
@@moffettcoates6455 No. They were interpreters and damn good ones so I'm thinking he was talking about the harmonies maybe. Beach Boys had good harmonies and they wore there own songs as well. All three bands were good. The BB's started a record label back in the day called Brother Records and they could of signed this band when they were going by another name but Mike Love said no. He didn't like them or something and that was that. Boy did Mike muff that up.
@@michaelstratton6701 The Bee Gees were originally from the Isle Of Man. They moved to Australia when it was suggested to there parents because they were trouble makers. Andy at the time was an infant.
Did the bass player have ripped jeans with hols 50 years before they were a "thing?"
Yes but he wore them unironically.
@@andrewfield5656 And a black guy, (Floyd), was dancing with a white girl. In the 70s? Who wudda thunk. Pay attention dizwit feminists
Variety shows really never knew what to do with rock bands, besides make them look kind of foolish.
I used to have the same blouse as the guy in yellow. 🤔
I read the book...not sure how Chuck always looks so fine?
love him

These lip-synced T.V. appearances are hysterical to me. The good old days, before bands were lip-syncing to their songs in music videos on Mtv.

It sure was.

Amazing. They just carry the instruments on stage and expect us to believe they're plugged in. Saw them at Miami Pop Festival in the 70s and Canned Heat kicked their ass.
I hope y'all will reply to this this song was written for the Carpenters but Richard turned it down
Fun Theater

You sure they just were not just actors. There is some play acting going on here.
You would think on this show at least they would play live
