Update Patch 1.0.3: As expected a patch dropped. Performance is about the same but the Camera bug seems fixed. I was unsure how this one would pan out and it pretty much landed where I thought it would. Mark
It's weird that the developers have said the Switch was the primary platform yet they still couldn't lock down the frame rate. Hopefully a day one patch will smooth it out. I actually didn't mind the demo, there were things I liked, some stuff I didn't, but I'm here watching your review so yeah, there you go!
Even if it's rough on Switch, I particularly love those B grade RPGs that FuRyu are releasing. Almost like nostalgia of a bygone era where not everything needed to be either AAA or low-budget/indie. There was this sweet middle spot, with a lot of jank, but also tons of heart into it. Thanks for the review, I'll keep my physical pre-order, if only for the fact that NIS-published games always tend to go rare after a while.
Same x2! I honestly like it despite its obvious drawbacks; not everything needs to be a super polished AAA this, or super tight indie project that. Something in the middle that will engage your brain while staying relatively simple. Both the combat and story seems promising without feeling overwhelming. The unique tidbits they did put in also left me intrigued and already planning my future playthroughs Definitely will get this in the future (just maybe once it goes on sale)!💜
The problem is that they are charging a triple A game price for a not very polished budget title. If the game was 29.99 to 49.99 then people wpuld be willing to give the game a chance. At least the Trails series games( which are made on a budget and recycle a lot of assets from game to game) can get away with charging full price. Because they polished up the graphics, gameplay engine is solid, and most people play the games for the lore and the story.
Last time i bought a game from FuRya was Monark which was a decent game with flaws... I admire they're ambition despite the games being really rough around the edges..thanks for the review!!
All said and done. It’s a new developer who may as well be considered indie. He just happened to be backed by some big names in order to get him going. This makes me see the game as more of an indie or AA title. It’s still pretty fun and good despite the flaws. Hope they clean up the Switch performance.
I gotta say I was NOT expecting this to be $60, given even the previews made it seem AA. Come down on that price, add some patches to make it perform better, and I’d probably buy it. Especially considering this is the closest we’ll probably ever get to what FF Versus XIII was supposed to be. I like the character designs too. Nice review, as usual guys. Thanks for the heads up
Appreciate your unvarnished gloves off review of this game it’s actually refreshing. You also touched on some things that other reviewers have said absolutely nothing about 🤔 good review thanks. My only major issue with the game is the white subtitles 😭 with no option to change the text size or color, it’s a blooming challenge to try and read the subtitles a fair amount of the time especially in combat . A decent color speech bubble and text would have gone a long way into fixing this problem. ( I only played the demo however I’m guessing this is the same in the full game) because the standard white text is not always so easily readable and will of times just bled into the background so you can’t see it….
5:10 - There's your money shot! :D - feels like this game was inspired by FFXV. The opposition, the city, THE MUSIC! Lookin' good, I'm gonna pick this one up. Feels like a breath of fresh air in the JRPG landscape.
I'm a bit sad that the game fell short for me. Furyus games are not the best, I wouldnt even call them hidden gems xD more like acquired tastes! But Reynatis feels like one of the weakest releases with Monark. Both have similar weaknesses imo with awesome ideas but bad execution and poor visuals/performance on the Switch. Hope some patches can rounden those edges. I will still look for sales in a couple of months though because Furyu games are just special. Special in both the negative and positive sense :D
I tried the demo: it reminded somewhat a bit too much Scarlet Nexus, but without the polishing of that game. I don’t know why but the only game of this sub-genre i really enjoyed in recent years has been Astral Chain. Such an underrated game, sigh.
I actually tried the demo earlier and I gotta say, I am indeed hooked on it. I personally found no issue with the combat system thus far and found it's approach to combat to be more a game of skill/resource management. For example, in the boss encounter in Dominus Forest, the first few times I tried I went at it head on like any other JRPG. But it wasn't until I tried incorporating a more defensive approach that I started to see myself making progress. So overall, though I've only played the demo, I think Reynatis has a lot of potential that, if given the chance, it could realize. Especially with a passionate young director at the head of the table.
I've been hesitant on this one and I've heard it strains the Switch pretty hard. There is a free demo available so perhaps i might try it... if they update the demo too, not sure if thats a thing for most developers. Thanks for the review Mark, I was hoping you would have time for it. Cheers SwitchUp!
Drat, english subs only too. I understand some people prefer subs not dubs but I can't read subs as miss the action, the split focus isn't possible without one losing out. I have to pick one, story or action, to focus on which is immersion breaking. My problem not the developer's but still disappointed 😕.
Thanks for the great, informative review! I like having the performance analysis at the start for a change up, especially for third party games like this one. I really enjoyed NEO: TWEWY & Persona 5 Strikers, so I’m interested in this game, but will be waiting for other patches & a sale with so many other games out & about to release.
Gotta say I prefer the flow of talking about story first. It’s a nice intro so you understand what the game is, before talking about performance. Just my opinion of course!
If the next switch is backwards compatible, wouldn’t it fix framerate and graphics issues on current poor switch performing games because it’ll be more powerful and would be able to handle those games better?
This game looks awesome and I will be buying it but Me personally I don’t care about frame rates. It’s never been an issue and I don’t know why it’s an issue for anybody. I don’t understand that unless there’s an actual where the whole screen is moving, I don’t see the issue but that’s just my opinion. I think it’s about that type of stuff in the game just play the game.
It's easy to tell on alot games if you have a display with 60hz or more. Ps2 days had games a 60 fps no problem nowadays game still struggle to be 1080p 60fps
despite the flaws, the price is also quite comparable to AAA games. i would expect it be a bit cheaper, but i guess they spend too much budget on the majestic soundtracks 🔥. Gonna get back that ROI. i wonder how big is this furyu team/company?
That is why I passed, I'm sick of most of these games being priced that high, I would have picked it up for 39.99. I ended up going with Romancing Saga 2 Revenge of the Seven, also passed on Ys Nordics.
Do you choose your character at the beginning or swap between them through the chapters. I can overlook some stuff, but I hate changing characters like that in an rpg. Action games are cool when you swap, but not rpgs
Thank you, im going to get this game , hopefully some free DLC and a performance patch will put it where it needs to be. Give the sonic frontiers treatment
U got my atention when u said "Kingdom Hearts" xD Its hard to be a fan of that game and still no swotch version (i just igone the cloud one). Great video o/ like the visual first :)
I really want this game. It's up my ally. I like the gameplay and artstyle. But the choppy framerate is a heavy downer for me. Hope the patch it up soon.
Reynatis actually uses Unity engine, a good engine for mobile platforms, not so good for consoles. Not that it can't be good, Fire Emblem Engage was a really good example of how well Unity can run
From a trailer it looks cool, but clearly doesn't look like it's meeting expectations. I've heard PC is also having some performance issues as well so doesn't sound like this is a switch problem
I really like the idea they had for this game, I like how its inspired by Verum Rex and Versus, but it's very clear this game was horribly rushed. Even from the demo alone, that much is obvious. Now there's nothing wrong with liking it, but there's a difference between liking a game and the game itself actually being good. Unfortunately, Reynatis isn't good. I wish the devs had taken another year or two to put a little more work into it because I think it definitely had the potential to be a good game.
The performance issue is disappointing but truth be told, I'll probably still play it and just hope it gets a patch. It doesn't seem like the performance is worse than Ys IX which I still enjoyed despite the fact that it quite often turned into a slide show.
Nice graphics for a Switch game, but once again some questionable performance. All in under 15 seconds in this video! Edit: For those wondering why is this an issue? INPUT LAG, DROPPED BUTTON PRESSES. Just another reason we badly need a new Switch!
I just downloaded demo while at work. Watched this on way home. Sad performance sucks. Here is to hoping all patched up is in its future. Have a great weekend guys.
I don’t want games to chase industry trends, I want more games that would fit right in the Xbox ps2 GameCube days I want more PS2 looking games, not everything needs to be either photorealistic or some pixel art indie game there needs to be more of a market for that grey area of games that aren't AAA but have a bigger budget than a small indie 2D pixel art game
I tried the demo my only problem is the framerate it's so lagging I can't timed the dodge cause of the delayed reaction Astral chain dodge is more responsive though
I enjoyed my time with the demo, but I'll wait until it's cheaper & patched before picking it up. I like the setup for this one, with the 2 sides of the story, but somehow it both has spectacular style and is very forgettable, so much so I forgot it was coming out until recently.
Was excited for this ...till I tried out the demo then I felt that the mechanism was pretty annoying with the mp draining 😞 Its gonna be a sales pick up if not at all
Hoooo gosh. $60 for something with that degree of performance issues is a bit of an ask. Hopefully they can at least get it steady, the choppiness gives me an actual headache (or was that last night's poor decisions?!). Wishlisted.
No excuse for poor performance on this one. The Switch has games that are much more demanding! Otherwise looks interesting. I'm all for supporting these types of Niche titles.
This game may have a lot of issues, and most people would write this off as a kusoge But it feels like it was made for me, it's such a obsucre PS2 era feeling action game with that gameplay and aesthetics, i can't help but vibe with it I expected only people who were already familiar with the game's inspirations can find good things to say about it, the target audience is way too small, most players won't find anything appealing about this I wouldn't call it a particularly great game, but for a few select people like me who miss that edgy visuals and simple designs from those old days this is gonna feel very nostalgic. Its absolutely not worth $60, but something about the low res textures, the janky hack n slash combat, nonsense wizard story just compels me.
Reynatis is one of those games that captured the feel and aesthetics of a PS2/PSP era action Jrpg near perfectly, whether it was intentional or not They even got pre rendered cutscenes that look way better than anything in game, in general it has a lot of 2005-2008 energy Think that’s the main appeal of Reynatis, that it looks like a budget Square Enix game Verum Rex X NEO TWEWY but it plays and looks like a PS2 era action game, a very specific niche but appreciate that it exists I don’t want games to chase industry trends, I want more games that would fit right in the Xbox, PS2 and GameCube days would definitely love to play more games that look and play like these, or a sequel that would iron out some of its issues and polish its visuals and mechanics, though with how little it sold both in japan and in the west i find it unlikely. I am genuinely glad a game like this exists.
These new games dont run well on switch, so I got it for ps5 and it runs really smooth. I think this will be good on switch 2 though judging from the leaks.
That price point for this thing is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, but this is no God of War (just picking the biggest example that came to mind in terms of overall quality)... Yet it is priced as if the graphics, performance and content were justifying that value... I swear, I really need to see the credits for the team that worked on this, because I bet there is a serious waste happening in that group. I'm certainly curious about the QA team, if there is a team at all.
I hope people buy this game strictly so it getsba sequel thats actually funded well, because the world/story could be built on so much it isnt even funny, a funded sequel would be epic, so if you want to see a sequel to this i recommend buying it, and if you think it has no future dont
A little disappointed honestly, I was hoping for this to be a cool AA, AAA game with stronger performance, especially if the devs had put more resources into it. What lost me, weirdly, wasn't the performance though - it was the run cycle. Weird gripe (I know) but I've always disliked really slidey- or floaty run animations.
People will criticise Reynatis for shitty frame rate, yet the top 60 metacritic reviews for Link's Awakening rate it 90/100 or above and that is the biggest graphical shit show on the Switch. The amount of 90/100+ game reviews with glaring faults that get totally ignored is beyond me. I'll take my chances on this. Even more so with Shimomura being on it.
I tried the demo. The characters eyes are totally lifeless when seen up close. Needless to say it wasn't perfect - not quite as polished as something like Astral Chain - but I still enjoyed it. Though the special dodge, recharge special move (where you wait for the circle to fill before releasing it) was a pain; the timing was finicky as hell. 9:15 As you said, they could have done more visually to let players know how to time that move.
Honestly I feel like gamers put to much into frame rate. Personally I'm not a fan of action RPG games even if the story definitely sounds interesting. I'd probably wait for a sale
It's not gonna change the face of gaming, but I quite enjoyed the demo of Reynatis... I found the parrying mechanic really intuitive and satisfying Stick it on the wish-list!
At this point I just don't see the value of playing games like this on the Switch, even with the option of handheld if there's another way to play these games I'd go for it, otherwise wait for the Switch 2 because like 80% of your recent reviews are the same, good game shitty performance
Honestly, I’m just glad the game is exactly what it looked like on the cover. I was expecting a janky, ps2 looking AA game and that is exactly what we are looking at here, for better and for worse. Even after the demo I’m still intrigued to play through this and experience the story with absolutely no other expectations. Honestly it’s refreshing to just not flat out be disappointed in a game, this is exactly what it looked like it would be.

I thought the demo was fine.
If only they did God Eater like this
This will be bought on a series x or pc ngl and on sale.
I'd buy it but not at that price lol
Honestly I feel like gamers put to much into frame rate. Personally I'm not a fan of action RPG games even if the story definitely sounds interesting. I'd probably wait for a sale
Is this the same FuRyu that makes anime figures that are delayed for months on end?
Not a massively complex looking game, but also looks very fun and satisfying. I will definitely be waiting for an all patched up on this one!
Yoko Shimomura, most known for the Kingdom Hearts series. Or, if you're really f*****g old. Street Fighter 2.
Thanks game looks cool going to try the demo! didnt know it was on steam as well
It's not gonna change the face of gaming, but I quite enjoyed the demo of Reynatis...
I found the parrying mechanic really intuitive and satisfying
Stick it on the wish-list!
looks fun but I'll wait for it to get patched up
Switch holding back games again
was interested until we hit the price like come on this definitely isn't AAA
Ohh please i waited so much for it..let it patched be up iam a huge fan of FF KH and Twewy..._. ive seen it the charakters the pins..
At this point I just don't see the value of playing games like this on the Switch, even with the option of handheld if there's another way to play these games I'd go for it, otherwise wait for the Switch 2 because like 80% of your recent reviews are the same, good game shitty performance
I tend to agree at this point especially with Steam deck so cheap. Mark
Well, after playing the demo, it's not only that the performance is abismal, the inself isn't even good.
I've tried the Demo...and I deleted it after a few minutes of gameplay. The frame rate is garbage 🗑️ hopefully this gets patched
It looks like a PSP launch game
It's really unacceptable. The game just looks like a big mess in terms of... everything. Story, gameplay, performance. Big pass
Agreed, a lot of these anime games just look like they exist for the sake of existing rather than trying to create an actual game first
Ah I actually really like the story and some of the gameplay. It’s just pretty shallow as far as systems go. Mark
Ok have fun playing your western woke DEI slop
@@SwitchUpYt this game is actually Out now?
Well… Furyu have certainly done a thing. Again.
Did she pull out her Phone and took a Selvie of the Monster and herself? That's Funny.
Hm. I'll wait for sale. I want this but not now...
Wh-what? N-not because im broke okay! I-its because of the game's terrible performance!
Not surprised. Not the best experience on pc either from what I've seen.
Just felt like Tokyo ghoul
I don’t think I’ve liked a single game by this company, so lers say I wasn’t expecting much lol
£53.99 on Eshop. Wow
30 fps ?
Watch the first 2 minutes 😅
OMG 😂😂
@@uu-rr7354 😭 it upsets me haha - they dropped the ball there. Mark
