Hi Rob 13:50 i use reusable wipe cloth like light handkerchief it’s convenient to wash with just dish soap then rinse it over and over again. BTW I’m your new sub!🤩
Because bidets are a huge thing that needs to be manufactured too, a huge footprint, entire factories dedicated to just creating more stuff plus more water down the drain. Wiping with leaves is probably the most eco friendly... or wash off with your hose outside in a outhouse? :)
A small (1/2gal) plastic watering can works well. It is used all over the Middle East. Then washcloth to dry. I never panic about not having TP. Thanks for this very candid tutorial. I hope many people watch and get rid of TP.
I buy Meyers dish soap, and I noticed it was very similar to the sani-bottle they gave me at the hospital after I gave birth. I have since "re-purposed" this bottle for my make shift bidet. Everytime, I get a food order, I save all the napkins and I have them in the little compartments of my car, to use them for the kids, cleaning the car, "emergencies" with the kids. Surprisingly, I end up using all of them lol I used to be married to a guy from Mexico, and they would take their covered waste bin out to the burn pile and burn the, and then you can use the potash in your compost and garden. I have totally used baby washclothes for the toilet, and I did wash them, but I only used them for #1 and I used the bidet bottle and the toilet paper for #2. Reduces your TP use a TON, especially if you have girls in the house.
When Robyn Davidson trekked across Australia in the 70s, she learned to live without many of these 'necessities' by learning from her Indigenous travelling companions. To minimise the waste she left in the desert, she used spinifex grass & leaves as a replacement for toilet paper. She also used spinifex to replace sanitary pads & tampons; although when she had no-one travelling with her, she didn't use anything at all, she just let her body be.
There are some things that we are not supposed to talk about where I live. People are so IN THE BOX! But it doesn´t matter! I´m sharing this, and thank you again for another great video! Stay safe!
It is insane! I was totally shocked when I heard the news about the shelves being emptied and all the people are worried about wiping their bottom part. Is really it the biggest problem? :) In New Zealand, Blue spur flower is a weed that you should kill in order to protect the native plants.. I still don't get the concept of labelling 'weed' and 'native'. But imagine everyone would just let it grow at the backyard and we would never have the need for toilet paper again! So beautiful! :)
Well there a plants which grow naturaly in a place (native plants) and there are plants which were brought there by humans ( non native). And often the non native plants take away the space for the native plants so that the native plants can't grow anymore. The problem with that is that the animals in the are who used to eat the native plants can't eat the non native plants which have overtaken the space. So If native plants die out because of non native plants then there are always some animals who can't find food anylonger. Yes most animals do not just live from one plant. But you just let non native plants grow wildly then there are a lot of native plants which are going extinct and as a result also animals. I am sure there are also native plants in new zealand which you can use for that business just as good.
Yes. My husband and I use a bidet. My 6 year old uses a peri bottle because she’s less likely to make a wet mess that way. Works for all of us and works on travel too.
I love this! I'm going to start taking the left over napkins I don't use and make my own reusable ones. Once I return to work, I won't practice this, but certainly at home. Thank you Mr. Rob.
Thank you for making this informative video. I recently purchased (on Amazon) a portable bidet (I think about $13) that’s simply a handheld flexible contain with a lid that has a plastic v-shaped nozzle with a perforated end . Have had to “practice” for about a week and love it. Have even added a bit of liquid soap to warm water for cleansing, then just another dose of plain water to rinse. What I’m coming to appreciate is that I control the pressure of the water and exact aim. I feel cleaner, it’s more efficient and because there’s nothing to wipe, I just blot with a facecloth. Your T shirt idea 💡 sounds like an improvement. Still trying to make face masks but you’ve planted a seed.
I have a bidet and use cloth wipes. (And diapers for my child) I already use a wet bag for the diapers so I put the wipes in the bag and then it all goes in the washer.
The "kettle" in Filipino culture is called a "tabo." My boyfriend introduced my to its simple glory and my bum is sooooooo clean. Everyone should tabo!
Good video, Rob. Great message. My stepdad bought misrolled TP factory and sold it at flea markets. I grew up with jacked up TP with rolled edges and stuff. Worked, tho. Ima try doing water.
I've grown to love my bidet and cloth wipes so much over the past few years (the toilet paper shortage really made very little difference in my life) that I've been wondering what I would ever do without it, for instance if we switch to a composting toilet, which we've been considering. Got a great idea here from the bum gun suggestion. An empty flip-top dishwashing liquid bottle would be an excellent alternative.
So we have a bidet, but still find it necessary to follow up with some sort of wiping mechanism. It’s not always 100% clean from the spray, and it seems inconsistent as to when it is clean or not.
Very interesting and challenging concepts. Thanks for being a leader. I recently discovered your content and am enjoying listening to what you have to say and learning from your example.
Do you sterilize the cloth after each use, and do a wash when you have a large pile, - or throw it in with other washing? Hope you don't mind me asking :)
nzmermaid I don’t mind at all, I rinse them out daily, clip them on a hanger to air dry, toss them and into the regular bleach load. I use cut up old white t-shirts and the white wash cloths from Walmart, 18 for under $4. Been doing it for years.
nzmermaid so glad I can help. New Zealand, WOW! I’m in Kingman,AZ. From watching other UA-cam channel I’ve realized many people use this method or something similar to it. I was raised on a farm in Missouri, with an out side toilet. Used many pages from phone books and catalogs on my bum as a kid in the 60’s! Lol. Do you prep also?
Thanks for this video Rob. I thought nothing of introducing my family to clothes in the toilet as have been doing it for myself for some time. My girls did it because we had no choice for a while but convincing them that it is still worth doing now is not so easy. The more we talk about this as the norm the better. We love our bum gun too!!
Great video! Thanks for sharing Rob :) In times when people are panic buying TP, really great that you are sharing all of these eco-friendly alternatives.
omg Rob.. this is one of my fav vids you've done.. I just shipped my tiny and soon to be biodiesel truck to the big island and was planning on growing mullien for my composting but am going to change it up now! TY!
Hey Rob ! Enjoyed. Actually, I have laughed my "butt" off ! I could almost see a smile on your face when you were being serious. I did okay until you said, "if you're a once-a-day pooper", and I went into silent "primal scream" laughter that doubled me over for at least 30 seconds and I spent another 30 seconds trying to straighten up and explain what I thought was so funny. Of course, I was faced with blank stares. I have an alien sense of humor. Anyway , I love what you are doing and I love you, my brother, or grandson... take your pick. Take care
If using newspaper you can you a spray bottle of water and get it a bit damp first. It makes it softer and clean better. You can spray the cloth too and make them damp.
Hi from Quebec! I really enjoy hearing you with all of your thoughts and suggestions. It is an eye opener and as times are changing on this earth it is a good time to push ourselves to look at things in a different light. As the world gets to open again I hope that we will remember the fear, the scarcity and the human drama that has punched us ( yes punched as in punch in the face) to go in a different direction. Thanks for inspiringly and helping us learn how to do things differently. It’s a slow change but every little thing helps.
I switched to clothwipes 4 years ago. Would never go back to paper. I still have toilet paper for quests but use only one roll every 4 months or so. Great video. I wish I could get friends to switch to cloth but they all follow the norm and think I'm crazy.
I have a question about reusable cloth wipes... here’s the thing I’m only using the cloth wipes for drying after using a bidet... however they are still being used for the butt area lol so I want to make sure they are handled properly... my question is how often should I wash them and what’s a good sustainable way to wash them without having to throw them in the washing machine?
In Kerala, India, where I stayed from 18 y.o. to 27, the bathrooms would have a water tap with a plastic cup next to it (sometimes with a larger bucket to help flush the toilet if needed). Now, back in the West, we still keep a simple plastic cup next to the toilet and fill it up before sitting down. I have actually never purchased toilet paper.

Great way to reuse your babies cotton nappies. I used the nappy liners from my children’s cotton nappies that I don’t use any more, I put them Into a metal pedal bin and bin and then wash when full. They are super soft! I have 58, because I had 30 in small and large sizes but I accidentally flushed 2 when I started using. I also have ‘who gives a crap’ bamboo loo roll, great to take on the go for your personal use as they have a paper wrap around them, I bought a load and stored the huge boxes in my loft to reduce need for delivery.
That's another thing to recycle a old plastic bottle, or, a squeezer bottle for :-) Brilliant idea about checking toilet paper manufacturer's dump! I'm really wanting to try growing toilet paper, hopefully the Blue Spur Flower, sounds lovely; at least through the local growing season. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas, Rob.
If in the woods, how abt a smooth wood stick on left hand, & squirt/run water bottle with right hand thoroughly wash so to prevent touching your mess? What does “leave no mess behind” mean?? Do u dig a hole, throw it all in the hole and bury it? As a big OCD’r😵💫, I seriously want to understand the best method technique. During covid, i got the big scare when the shelves were completely empty of TP. Even when SHTF, everyone needs to learn the best effective step by step procedure on how to rinse our bottoms correctly & efficiently. The ideas are great, but demonstrate best rinsing and exact wiping directions😬🙏🏻
I learn so much & apply more & more to my life every year. I have not had to buy toilet paper for years since I started dumpster diving about- yrs ago. Now I need to grow mullein or lambs ear in my garden ;) BTW it's amazing how much perfectly ok food stores get rid of as trash. I have been eating more organic veggies & fruit, almond milk etc abundance overload here - soO grateful :)
Thanks a lot Rob, I just received my plecthrantus barbatus plants today. I hope it will grow enough inside my house on a sunny spot, I live in northern France. I hope you're fine in these coronavirus times. Peace ;)
If you are going to stay with toilet paper, at least purchase toilet paper made of bamboo. It's sold at Amazon and local supermarkets even Vons carries bamboo to. Much more eco friendly.
Very good info!!! So cute when you say ,..poop or butt ... LMBO I'm so happy to see that I'm really not crazy . My husband used to say I was crazy cause I wanted to compost or recycle I'm very independent so I started my own little Earth give back , when I move I will be 💯 on board
Moss is great dont use skunk cabbage or youl burn your but with the calcium oxalate crystals thanks rob unfornatly every dumpster i visit around here is either a compactor or has a lock on it
Surely, you can just use one of those hummingbirds can't you Rob? There can be no greater luxury in life than having your bottom depurated by their gentle fluttering wings on a misty morning! ;)
Have you ever used rootbeer leaves? They are big and fine hairy; they are not very absorbing though! I used clothes with bidet! Thanks to the Italians! I went there last year and finally got the bidet installed right before the lock down in California! Save so much money for toilet papers and stay away from the crowd!
Always enjoy watching your videos👍. I use molton cloth wipes in shape of a toilettepaper with water - realy soft, too. Unfurtunately dumster diving in Germany is illigal - in Switzerland or France, I don't know ???
I am sorry to comment late, but I am sort of binge watching your videos as they are very educational. But you made me think whether water spent for a piece of reciciled paper is actually more water than I would use cleaning myself directly with water? We use 4 roles a month for 2 people, so 2 roles per person per month being at home 100% so to be honest, i am not sure what is better..
In nature, theres a nice surface for you to use the toilet in with no splashback. But, with a toilet, how would you avoid the splashback without creating a toilet paper nest inside?

When you think about it, wiping (smearing) doesn't make sense. Why not just wash?
Yeah. And also if you wash it water, soap, and then wipe it with dry towel will be much cleaner
in Europe bidet is very common, everyone washes your but with water in Spain where I live 👍👍👍.
Because bidets are a huge thing that needs to be manufactured too, a huge footprint, entire factories dedicated to just creating more stuff plus more water down the drain.
Wiping with leaves is probably the most eco friendly... or wash off with your hose outside in a outhouse? :)
Bc it's a terrible waste of drinking water and water that could be used for growing food crops
No water used in making of toilet paper?

I bought MULLEIN seeds from Baker Creek last month!!! I've been so excited to grow it!!
Enjoy the toilet paper freedom Angie!
I went walking around my property a couple of days ago & was so excited to find Lambs Ear!
Do you flush it?
Sandy Brown, no idea I just saw it growing on my property & won't use except emergency. 😀

One way to think of it which I like to use is weeds are something growing were you don’t want them to, so wheat can be a weed in a cornfield
Here in Indonsia. We use water.

Also, for post partum women, you can use the peri bottles they give you as a squirt bottle. They can also just be brought.

What about using a metal serving spoon or butter knife?
How i can get the toilet paper seeds??
Rob sir I liked u r way of living ....it is true also....
I bought a big stack of washrags when everyplace was running out of TP . Helps to have a washing machine of course
Or a bathtub, or a sink...or just a bucket and a garden hose
Thank you so much! I must add don’t wipe your butt with poison oak poison sumac poison ivy or poison mushrooms :-) I loved the video❤
Just use a peri bottle or a Meyers dishwashing liquid bottle....works really well.
Can it grow in Indonesia (tropic claim) ?
Always enjoy watching your videos👍.
I use molton cloth wipes in shape of a toilettepaper with water - realy soft, too.
Unfurtunately dumster diving in Germany is illigal - in Switzerland or France, I don't know ???
In France it is illegal to throw away food which is still good and fresh. The Stores have to give it away If they can't sell it.
You can still dumpster dive illegally, just don't get caught
"Willy nilly pooping 💩 all over the place" 😂 great video
I am sorry to comment late, but I am sort of binge watching your videos as they are very educational. But you made me think whether water spent for a piece of reciciled paper is actually more water than I would use cleaning myself directly with water? We use 4 roles a month for 2 people, so 2 roles per person per month being at home 100% so to be honest, i am not sure what is better..
In nature, theres a nice surface for you to use the toilet in with no splashback. But, with a toilet, how would you avoid the splashback without creating a toilet paper nest inside?
what type of toilet do you use? I'd like to grow TP, but one can't flush leaves.
