    WEAR YOUR COSTUME BEFORE THE CON!! It not only lets you know if you're going to comfortable and where possible areas of irritation will be, but if you have a large one it'll help give you a sense of special awareness for your size. it's simple, but it'll help!

    At my first con, I learned that there are WAY more people like me, people who like the same things as me. I dragged my mom along to my first con, and she was amazed that there were more people in costume (I cosplayed as Phoenix Wright) and more people who loved the same things I do. IT WAS AWESOME!!!

    Tips I've learned as both a Cosplayer & con-goer:
    1: Don't cosplay & shop on the same day. Because, if you're approached for a photo, you're going to want to set your bags down, and that will make it easy for someone to pilfer through your purchases.
    2: Get a hotel close by. - Nothing is worse than having to walk a long way/take a long taxi ride after a day at a Con. And, if you're cosplaying, you want somewhere close by that you can easily get to if it's raining/you need a break.
    3: Group cosplays are more fun/safer! - What's better than just a Darth Vader cosplayer? Darth Vader being flanked by Boba Fett, Darth Maul & Stormtroopers! Or why not the Avengers roster? It's a great way to meet new people who share the same passions as you do. You're also less likely to be harassed if you're being flocked by a posse.
    4: Work pockets into your costume if possible, in order to keep money/your wallet on you at all times. if you can't, then wear shorts underneath, or have a friend hold onto your valuables.

    Let's be honest; I wasn't fully prepared for my first attendance at some pop culture convention (a major anime one in my country). While the line wasn't too bad, part of me wishes that I could've bought the pass/ticket beforehand. At least it was fun flattering the cosplayers as if they were the real-life versions of their respective characters.

    • @ScottTumilty
      @ScottTumilty  3 роки тому +1

      I'll be honest, while it seems like a rip-off, early access passes are fantastic for just being able to look around at your own pace for a while. Admittedly I generally had press passes, but still, the space and freedom was fantastic.

    Definitely agree on all points. Especially the shoes and the planning. Planning is your friend. There's too much going on to figure out what to do on the fly, and you'll definitely miss out on stuff if you don't have at least a few things on the todo list.

    If you are even slightly nervous about crowds, you really want to start out a small con. The larger ones can be overwhelming, and don't even get me started on the behemoths like SDCC. My first convention was Dragon Con back in the 90s, and that was a real eye-opener for a newbie.

    If you are going to a far-away con, I suggest spending the money on a hotel room. Last con my friend and I had decided to save money on sleeping arrangements, and get spots in the sleeping hall. When we had arrived to the con, not a single security person seemed to know where the 'sleeping halls' were. On their webpage it was stated that they were a few hundred metres from the actual con. At 9 in the evening we found out where they actually were. Now instead of being a 5 minute walk, it turned out to be 3. Fucking. Hours. Without any extra money to get a taxi for that(that stuff sure is expensive), we had to walk- after all we were alone in a foreign country, so no one we knew could actually help us. It wasn't just walking either, this happened at wintertime in Sweden-- while we both were wearing shorts. We had been given a paper with 'directions', which in all honesty were too shitty to understand. To say it short we went home the day after omfg.

    I'm going to Glasgow Comic Con in September with my friend (She is going as Harley Quinn & I am going as Mistah J) but I have never been and I have no idea what to expect. Although I am more concerned about AFTER Comic Con I would like to know if it is best to just get a hotel and stay there the night and we can take of our outfits and makeup or if it is better to just get a drive home in a car from the convention as I don't really want to walk the streets of Glasgow as the Joker hahaha. I also stay in a small-ish place called Clackmannanshire which is over an hour away from Glasgow on the train 😕

    I've been to a few, DragonCon in Atlanta several times, and several smaller ones once or twice. Everything Scott says here is absolutely true and fantastic advice.
    I would even add more emphasis to his "plan ahead" point: also don't over-plan. Pick 3 or maybe 4 things and plan your schedule around going to them. Remember to plan time to eat. If you have time for a few secondary items, great, but if you keep your big ones in mind, you're likely to get to them on time and not tired/crabby.

    I went to my first con this year too! Denver just started ours last year, so it was a HOT MESS. I mean, registration was confusing and took forever and was kinda awful. But, I bought art, and saw cosplay (next year I wanna dress up! Rouge maybe?) and met my favorite line artist and got him to sign comics I've had since I was 13... it was pretty great. I agree with pretty much everything you said too! =)

    I'm going to my first con with my friends in a few days, so I shouldn't have too much trouble- but it's near Miami and my character wears all black, long sleeve shirt, pants, a "scarf" and rain boots.
    I know it'll be dreadful until I get into air conditioning and honestly right now I'm willing to do that just to cosplay them, but otherwise I hope I'll be fine aha. I try to make it to Albany Comic-Con every summer. It's small and mostly consists of lots of vendors and people buying comics. Though, there have been some interesting guests. Jim Starlin's been there. Ramona Fradon's been there. Ron Marz is there pretty much every year. My one regret is that I pretty much never talk to anyone there. It's one of the few times I'm ever surrounded by people with similar interests. This year, I think I'll go dressed as the 11th Doctor. Might serve as an icebreaker.
    Oh . . . one thing! It's not a bad idea to bring your Nintendo 3DS. Not necessarily to play games, but to pick up Street Pass tags.

    My one and only con was in 1987, just after graduating high school, visiting GenCon, the Mecca of D&D at the time. I wasn't in any way organized, and much too reserved to really dive into things. I was a wee tween when I went to my first con which led to a lot of very cringey behavior which I am still embarrassed by to this day. I guess my advice would be to take it easy and relax. Yes, be excited. It's an exciting place! But remember to settle down and be aware of the people around you and take a hint. I most definitely bothered a lot of people at my first convention but was just too hyped to notice. I specifically remember making a cosplayer really uncomfortable with a long, strong hug but didn't once think of how that made the person feel because I was just too excited.

    I've never been to a con before and need a few tips!
    1. Do you pay for everything (such as entry, photoshoots, panels and signatures ) online before or when you are at the con?
    2. If you pay for entry, does that mean you can enter just for that one day or for the whole weekend.
    3. For signatures can you talk to the people or is it really quick?
    Thanks for the help.

    • @ScottTumilty
      @ScottTumilty  5 років тому +1

      Hi,
      1) While sometimes you can pay online beforehand, it's safer to assume you'll need to pay on the day.
      2) It depends on what kind of ticket you buy. You can usually get single day tickets, or whole weekend tickets.
      3) You'll get time for a very quick chat, but there's going to be a line of people behind you, so it'll be very brief.
      Anyway, hope that clears some things up, and that you enjoy your first con :D

I was wondering if I should just get the sword at the convention or if i should just go ahead and buy one of the Internet. Any suggestions?

      +TheSuperGamer I'd definitely suggest that you shop around, and try to see what kind of prices you can get online. While cons are good for things that you can't get anywhere else, the prices tend to be pretty steep.
      Or, if you're feeling creative, you could try and make the sword yourself?

      +Scott Tumilty Okay, thank you for the suggestion. I know for sure though that I probably won't be making the sword mostly because of time limitations and the fact that I'm not quite that creative,

    Are there any anime cosplayers, or even anime merchandise at comic con? I like comics also and there aren't many cons where I live and I can't go very far for conventions, so In order to cosplay something from anime it would have to be at a comic con. Is that okay to do?

    Does the items in the comic con cost a lot of money or are they a normal amount?

    • @ScottTumilty
      @ScottTumilty  6 років тому

      They're super expensive. Bring lots of money, or your least favourite sibling for bartering purposes.

    • @daisyshadowsmith919
      @daisyshadowsmith919 6 років тому

      Scott Tumilty i only have a certain amount of money. I’ve heard that when it gets to the end the prices go down? But I’m not sure what to buy if it’s not going to be there by the end!

    • @ScottTumilty
      @ScottTumilty  6 років тому

      Sometimes the prices go down, but it's not a certainty. I'd advise you to set yourself a budget that you're absolutely not going to go over, and only buy things that you really, really want. It's easy to get caught up in the spirit of things and go home with a load of crap that you're not really that interested in.

    I’m going to my first comic con, and I think I need to pay for an autograph or a picture with some famous, is it true?

    • @ScottTumilty
      @ScottTumilty  5 років тому

      I'm afraid so. For photos and autographs with guests you'll need to pay, and to queue.
      If there's someone you really want to meet and get a photo with, I'd recommend seeing if you can book in advance, cause that stuff will sell out quickly. The website for the comic con should be able to tell you more.
      Just make sure you spend some time wandering about and seeing everything the comic con has to offer, as well as spending time in a queue :)

      Scott Tumilty thank you, I was so happy thinking that I’ll see my favorite actors and have their a picture with them and stuff and while I was planning I figured out I need to pay 😔 I just can’t afford it

      I got there a bit late around 10:30 but it was kinda feeling empty. I felt like going home, but I waited 2 more hours then it really got good. I got to take some really good photos. My tip:
      - Keep walking around you'll eventually meet someone in a fantastic costume and if you ask nicely you'll always get a photo.
      - Deodorant is a must,
      - Don't be afraid to ask for photos or to friend someone on facebook
      - I had a fantastic time despite some of the merchandise over there were a bit too pricey.
