  • Episode 27 of Love At First Scent
This was a Facebook Live broadcast streamed on Friday 15th February 2019. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
The perfumes covered in this episode were:
    - Un Jardin Sur La Lagune from Hermès (at the start of the video)
    - 1957 from Chanel (at the 17:00 minute mark)
    - Mon Guerlain Bloom Of Rose from Guerlain (at the 30:00 minute mark)
    - Siren & Sailors from Jusbox (at the 50:00 minute mark)
and I also mentioned the new book
    - Perfume: In Search Of Your Signature Scent by Neil Chapman (at the 39:00 minute mark)
    -
    Here's the blotter update...
    - I feel I may have been too dismissive of the Hermès. There’s something curiously vegetal about its marine-floral accord (reminiscent of Jardin De Monsieur Li and Eau De Narcisse Bleu) that’s pretty compelling, especially on skin. I feel this one might reward repeat wearings.
    - The Chanel continues slinking around in its musks while adding prominence to a vetivert facet; pleasant, elegant and well-rounded
    - The Guerlain remains quite thin and forgettable, which is a shame, as I would’ve liked a strong lavender-rose
    - Thankfully, the Jusbox isn’t quite as overpowering as at its start, but it doesn’t fully ditch its sickly-sweet personality; I really do wonder if Winehouse would have gone anywhere near it.
[Samples of all the above scents provided by the respective brands.]

I've just discovered your blog and youtube channel and would like to let you know what I really enjoy your work. Also thanks for sharing your thoughts on 1957. I haven't tested it yet. To your question: There is more than one Les Exclusif that I really appreciate. I started my collection with Cuir de Russie - which is quite unusual. Other favorites are 31 Rue Cambon (my fav chypre fragrance), Bois des Iles (It's great if you seek comfort and coziness from an outer cold world) and recently also Boy (a really pretty fougere and dandy fragrance) :)

Lisa Hölzel Thanks so much for taking the time to write; I really appreciate it. And those are some of my favourite Exclusifs too, especially Cuir De Russie (masterpiece!) and Bois Des Iles.

On the subject of perfume books ‘ I found my 2008 Roja Dove Beauty yesterday and was delighted as completely forgot I had it . Indeed I was looking at it on line and it was going for over £100 and thought I might have bought if cheaper or the 2014 version which is even more expensive but Haha I don’t need to as I own it . 😃

I'm curious to try Un Jardin Sur La Lagune. I doubt if I'd like it more than Sur Le Nil, or some of the others. Monsieur Li was a disaster for me. 1957 hasn't hit Toronto yet (usually it takes one more year for Canada).
I love your presentation (ambience, vibe), especially the flowers.
Btw, I re-tried Patou pour Homme (vtg.) based on a wrist test, and couldn't stop sniffing my wrist. I felt stupid to have bought all these 'niche' samples, most of them fail to smell something like perfume next to the Patou. Where are perfumes like Patou pour Homme today? All a thing of the past?
On a different note, my appreciation for Misia EdT has really grown. I'm ambivalent about the new EdPs - on paper they smell just as good compared to the EdTs (except for Sycomore), but I couldn't smell Coromandel on myself. I'm wondering if they are using some new aromachemical that I could be anosmic to.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write and for your kind comments about my video.
Where are those 'grand' perfumes of the past? Good question! Many of them will forever remain in the past, of course, because tastes and styles change. But I do think that every now and then, a modern brand releases a piece of work with the same ambition displayed by compositions from yesteryear. We just have to keep looking for them ;-)

The Neil chapman book is so nicely done . It’s a beautiful book and as well as being informative’ it’s also gossipy and personal as in where he mentioned using Madame Persolaise ‘s Portrait of a lady products in the bath ! It’s wonderful .

hi ! i couldn’t make the live broadcast so just managed to catch it here on YT. some comments i have -
    • chanel 1957 : you *have* to try it on the skin, it develops very differently from how the blotter smells. i am very surprised to discover how much i like it.
    • hermès : not so keen on the « woody-ambery » development you mentioned but i’ll have to try it to find out. the problem with this note is that it simply becomes horrendously sour in humid climates, the main reason i do not like citrus noir after the first 10mins.
    • mon guerlain : original was a sugar confection that tried to be a combination of angel and coco mademoiselle with an addition of lavender (a scent i do not like). so it was a massive fail for me anyway, and having the campaign fronted by a celebrity i dislike was simply the nail in the coffin.... however for this rose flanker i’m wondering if it will in fact be marginally better being less impactful and minus the lavender ? i’ll be curious to sniff it just for the sake of knowledge.
    • the book : will definitely check this out !!! the line drawings remind me of publications by nez; those are always superbly done in every way - content, aesthetics, everything; and they always feature such drawings too.
i tend to watch your live broadcasts on an iphone so it’s normal that only the bottle shapes can be made out. all names etc will be way too small to be seen and that has always been the case. so unless a box or bottle is unique it’s usually impossible to tell what it holds within. so in line with this, what was the grey/blue/lavender coloured box sitting above the jusbox ?
thanks for this review !! and please do try 1957 on your skin & see if it becomes more interesting !

Hi Angeline, thanks so much for the long and detailed comment.
Firstly: that box is the new Violet Ida from Miller Harris. I haven’t unsealed it yet.
I think I know what you mean about the Chanel. Even on paper, with the passage of time, it started revealing more facets. But I do find the sweetness of its musks difficult to take.
ANd yes, please do check out the book. I think you’ll probably like it.

      @Persolaise  5 років тому +1

Thanks very much for watching. I wouldn't say it's *very* disappointing, and it's definitely better on skin than on paper. But it also isn't as interesting and layered as the kind of thing we'd hope for from an Exclusif.

Oh oh Un Jardin sur la lagune was one of those perfumes, I had to wash off as soon as it touches my skin 😅 Because of this alga, to my nose almost fishy note. But I also can't stand Womanity because of this fishieness. I like Mon Guerlain as well, even if I don't own a full size bottle, the sample of bloom of rose was good enough to use it up for work. The book looks pretty beautiful, and I really have to keep my ordering finger under control. Watching your episodes isn't always that helpful to keep my perfume pocket money together 😜 Hope you'll enjoy your perfume-free holidays and come back with new inspirations. Many greetings from Germany.

I appreciated Peggy’s instant coffee remark. I went out to try and find a perfume in this pink phase that I liked. I bought Mon Guerlain but have not been drawn to wearing it. Then I was given a sample of Dior’s Rose Kabuki which is just a very clean, pretty, ‘young’ Rose. I appreciate the fact that it is so clear without the cloying vanilla.
I’d be interested in a review of the Gucci Alchemist Garden fragrances.

Ah yes, the new Guccis. How many scents released in one go? Is it something like forty-seven? (Bad joke!) I haven’t tried any of them yet. I always worry when brands push such a large number of new compositions in a single release.

Persolaise Perfumes - yes. But the mimosa interests me - I am always seeking the perfect mimosa.

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  5 років тому +1

Liz Seville I remember years ago Hermes had a Côte d’Azur exclusive called Voyage. Perhaps they still sell it. That was a beautiful - if perhaps a touch too sweet - mimosa. It’s a tough note to do well.
