- The Goddess is a central pillar of almost all forms of modern paganism and heathenry, an image that appears both relevant to the modern world and having origins in the distant past. How much of the modern perception of the Goddess really reaches back into history? Where did our Goddess really come from?
Prof. Ronald Hutton is a leading authority on history of the British Isles in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, on ancient and medieval paganism and magic, and on the global context of witchcraft beliefs. Also the leading historian of the ritual year in Britain and of modern paganism.
One thing I learn from Hutton is that expressions of 'Pagan' spirituality don't have to have some unbroken lineage from ancient times to be meaningful (though they often take inspiration from the past) but that spiritality is creative and adapts with our societies and feelings and the way we view our world

Thanks for posting, happy to have found it years later. Dr. Hutton could recite nursery rhymes and hold an audience rapt. This lecture is wonderful, though, in addition to Dr. Hutton's enthralling elocution.

A good talk. But I wonder: Has Academia learnt anything from this? I very much doubt it. The same kind of ideological strictures govern the Humanities today.

Only after the ritual of Christ's death could the idea of one God or goddess be supported by the spiritual field that this ritual created.
Goddesses at a distance past where in power but not from the Christ consciousness that we all have today but of the Lucifer consciousness that served humans so they could be free individually following one's own emotions instead of group impulse. But then Lucifer feel and worshiping the old gods was only feeding demons as the time for those old ways faded.
I rather think that every era is presided over by The Goddess, but when she invented Judaism, she was working on her concept of "Just you wait till your father gets home." Then she decided to spend the next few thousand years, pretending to be male, because she figured it was the only way she could get men to listen to her. And she was right as usual.
