Prior to getting hooked on Johns vids and testing and knowing nothing about detailing. I went to my local Halfords and asked for the best alloy wheel cleaner... Autoglym clean wheels 500ml was suggested (at about £8. I used it as per the instructions and used a toothbrush to agitate the stubborn dirt. The results were very disappointing. After watching this I ordered Bilt Hamber and an EZ detail brush. Used it for the first time today. Absolutely amazing and quick. My alloys have got some tricky bits to get to but the BH. Has shifted most of it on the first go. I didn’t realise that the inside of the wheel was alloy as well 😊 I always thought it was black. thanks Stevem its very powerfull using these to clean wheels. and the results are good.. it does shift stubborn dried out brake dust and leaves the wheels really clean.. its almost like a halfway house between a strong alkaline cleaner and a full on agressive acid.. down side is just the stink, the cost, and you will notice they promote corrsion on the brake disks.
Stench wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and the surface rust on disks is minimal, it’s no worse than any time I have had my car cleaned or cleaned it myself. A quick drive after soon sorts it out. Thanks for the info and time you take John, it is also appreciated that you take time to reply.
In 1988 i took a solid white Renault 25 on a motorail - it rained on the journey followed by hot sun ; the paint was so spotty - took me days to clean/polish it off - no iron fall out remover back then - no warnings from the train company - I had no idea it was iron fallout
Hey John, in a previous video you analysed all of Bilt Hamber's detailing products. In it you mentioned that you'd use Korrosol for the paint and keep auto wheels for the wheels. Is that still the case seeing as it wasn't evaluated in this test? I only ask because I'm in the U.S. and want to know if I can expect the same results from auto wheels. I understand its degreasing properties may strip coatings, but I'll only be using this when I plan on sealing/waxing after anyway.
Super methodical review and test! Good job!. I have my theory on the bleeding part: it only inicates iron deposits and nothing more. Why I say this: i have an aquaruim (planted tank) and all iron tests (iron is key for water plants health) turn purple when adding the reagent solution. The more purple - the more iron in your aquarium water. Another piece of advice: when comapring price it is better the use price/liter of the main SKU of the brand. If you add bulk items tou artificially favor them. And to be honest...weekend warriors dont need 5 liters of iron remover :)
Im not sure about the fishtank thing buddy.. but if its testing for iron and its turning purple.. I would prolly bet its actually the same thing and its picking up iron oxide??? If it isnt then its a different thing that Im not aware of.. all offerings had bulk offering size.. I would argue would have been a bad choice to not factor in 5l in the averages.. weekend warriors may want 5l.. they may not.. professionals may want it etc.. the way I did it does not discriminate for either and just creates a simple value for money accross the range.. would be overthinking it to do it any other way, and someone else would likely pick up on the fact I had not factored it in etc... (trust me on that) great stuff though m8 thanks for watchign and feeding back thats the name of the game...
Great video, thanks for your opinion on Ferrous Ferric (iRON Fallout Gel) this took over 6 months to get the formulation to where it is now, this as superb clinging ability and surprised it didn't finish higher in the bleeding reaction part as it bleeds bright red / purple nice rich colour and is superb valve for money.
Meguiars Ultimate Wheel Cleaner is my favorite, it is gel like, stays on the paint longer and turns purple well. I also can get it for around $8 a bottle
Very thorough and informative review and test. I was just googling further information on these type of cleaners and according to one site the colour change of these products is not an indication of its effectiveness. Instead, the colour is the result of an ingredient added to the product that changes colour due to the chemical reaction. Furthermore, the amount of colour change is only an indication of how much of that colour changing ingredient is in the formulation and is not an indication of how much iron is being dissolved. Not sure if this is in fact true but sounds like something worth exploring further.
Thank you for the review, very well put together and thought out. I do enjoy your videos as you know but I also like to correct where I think you may be a little off the mark. I must say though, we are over the moon with the results, we could have been last. Ours dries out fairly fast as well although it is slightly thicker than most. dooka BLEED is made with a different main ingredient to most. You would be better off testing BLEED or the others against those with the same main ingredient, ours would of been better off alongside IronX Lemon Scent rather than standard IronX as they use a different main ingredient, we use the same base as IronX LS. Don't get me wrong as I highly rate IronX and have always been vocal about it ;)..
@dooka detailing So can you mention the difference between dooka's fallout remover + lemon scent ironX with the regular cherry IronX? What are the pros and cons to both active ingredients?
Great video thanks for the effort, I'm just getting my geek on about caring for my body work now i finally own a half decent car, this has saved me a lot of wasted money in finding the best product for my cash👍
Jon, great, thorough test. Well done. Personally I have been using Merlins Blood for a while. A bit more expensive, but does well on heavily soiled wheels.
Just wanted to say your channel has to be one of the best, non bias, informative and honest UA-cam channels regarding detailing products. Your channel is my no1 go to the second I am trying to decide on buying new products to try. Just out of curiosity do you plan on doing a more recent fallout remover video, has anything else come on the market since filming this that could stand up against some of these? Thanks in advance and keep up the great content 👍
@@ForensicDetailing appreciate the reply dude thanks 👍 I bought some surfex HD after watching one of your videos and have to say its unreal compared to valetpro which I was using before. Used the surfex hd neat on a steering box of an old vintage tractor and it worked an absolute treat taking off over 20 years of grease, oil and dirt in less than a minute blasting it with a seriously old k2 power washer. Unreal stuff.
Another great video. Very informative. The fallout on the car didn't look like fallout tho. Looked more like mould/tree sap. I know it turned the product purple but a bird poop turns purple also.
Does AutoWheel react? Yes. So it is a fallout remover. It is basically Korrosol with Surfex HD added into it. I literally used it today. It reacted with iron and went purple. 🤣🤷🏼♂️
@@tsotsi5254 what I'm saying is that, although it does have fallout remover properties it's diluted with degreasers and cleaners. It's also marketed by Bilt Hamber as a wheel cleaner (the clues in the name). Does it react with ferrous material? Yes. Would Korrosol, their dedicated fallout remover react better? Of course. I wouldn't use Auto-Wheel all over my car as a fallout remover as that's not its intended purpose, I'd use Korrosol, because that's what it's for. If you're testing fallout removers use the dedicated product or your data will be inaccurate.
Great review. Kinda surprised you chose the Auto Pro product in second place considering you didn't mention it at all during the review and it was never in the top 3 performers of any categories. I'm in the market for a good fallout remover and this review helped me a lot.
The only problem I have with fallout removers is that if you spray it onto your brake disc, as logically happens when you clean your wheels, it oxidizes after you rinse the wheel, and you're left with a thin layer of rust. Which results in this rust sitting on your clean wheel when you brake during a ride. So you have to go in there and swipe the wheels with a damp towel. Which I almost consider as double work.
@@MultiYassar Me or the guy that first commented? I use an alkaline cleaner , a gentle alkaline cleaner , depends where you live wich products you can find .
Though it's unfortunate that most of the products discussed are not common in the US, still an interesting video. FWIW, I use Iron-X and C.A.R. Products Melt, the latter being an excellent value from a local distributor.
I’ve just changed from the bult hamber to gtechniq. Nothing wrong with auto wheel found the W6 more of gel so stayed on better, also says has a anti rust agent in it. Identical price as well £60.00 for 5 L
Another great video John and just in the nick of time as I was going cold turkey, wondering when the next one was coming. 😂 My personal preference is the Bilt Hamber and in particular the Korrosol which I use as a follow up after cleaning my wheels. Belt and braces. 👍🏼
Amoth Jon I was informed that Korrosol and Auto Wheel are the same product. However, Auto Wheels has some ingredient which makes it more viscous to enable better cling to wheels. I purchased Auto Wheels and just diluted it with water when used on paintwork.
Amoth Jon just be aware that Auto Wheels, although non acidic is a caustic product and will attack any metal plated components like unpainted brake callipers and wheel hubs, which will in a short time cause corrosion and unsightly rusty components.
Amoth Jon Both are pretty much the same product. If it was me I’d buy the Auto Wheels. However, when using try and avoid unpainted brake callipers and wheel hubs as much as you can👍🏻
I really love how you test products. Unfortunately, most of the US/Canada available products were not tested (Optimum Ferrex, Dodojuice Ferrous Dweller, Meguiars (can't remember name of the product), and so on. If you could do a follow up video with the American products it would be amazing... perhaps a collaboration with a large US retailer like Autogeek?
Do any of these products damage rubber/plastic? Im always worried about these chemicals stripping the natural oils from trim and bleaching them out. Any evidence of this with these chemicals? Thanks
non pourous plastic you have nothing to really worrying about other than normal kind of soap stains/minor surface ethching if it dries. pourous plastic if it dries on this it could stain and the residue can form patches which can be difficult to remove. always need to be carefull with FR's and hot panels and sunny days etc..
Great video and so thorough - thanks! Based on your initial explanation of what fallout is and the debates between using fallout before or after washing, if the products are only removing the iron oxide to make the removal of iron easier after application, does that suggest a full wash after is better? Or even better a wash, application of fallout remover followed by another full wash to fully remove the lose iron and not just the iron oxide reactant?
I generally spray on, leave to react and rinse off and then clay. I think you are saying is it worth making some sort of pre claying contact with the paintwork.. Like rub it with a wash mitt or a microfiber.. I dont think really the second wash or the pre clay contact with a mitt is adding anything in terms of the decontamination process.. So I would just rinse and clay. Not sure If Im right.. but I dont think it would make too much difference either way elliot.
I used Bilthamber Autowheel as a result of this test and I like it also very much! But the sprayer is absolutely not suitable for this viscous liquid. I switched it for another one with larger trigger. Otherwise there's almost no atomization (straight spritz).
I dont find that dutch. the BH sprays are really good.. nice strong draw with the squeeze and good atomisation (you sure youve not just got it on stream setting, cant remember if they have 2 settings or not)
It's a bit of a bear to watch through such a lengthy video with such detailed information. I really wish there was a written version of all the info presented in this video (the test methodology, reasons for each test, and specific results).
I forgot the names of the other iron removers I've used. I used car pro recently and plan to keep using it. Gonna clay my car and use it again to get a final impression on it
If I have a wheel cleaner that does the job on maintenance washes but I would like to add a fall out remover to my arsenal of products (for wheels and panels) am i better off buying a 'wheel cleaner with fallout remover' or just buy a 'fallout remover'. e.g should I by korrosol or auto-wheel? if they are the same price.
Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel Cleaner charges a flat £20.00 per order to ship abroad. You mentioned there may be a U.S. distributor for Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel Cleaner. Did you find one???
yes but I would go with korrosol. autowheels has a lot more detergent in it and other wheel cleaner "stuff" so on your panel if it dries could be like stronger residue issues.
I liked and bought ironx for about 3 years but switched away as it’s so expensive compared to others and it’s £15 a litre bulk. I’d go back to it if they sorted the price
Nice video. As u see in this clip and many more. The price makes the difference is compound/polish/pads the rest like TW ICE seal n shine wins all the time so is the most expensive product best anytime?
I used the Iron X yesterday and here is what happened: 4 weeks ago, I had polished + waxed the car. I then went on a 5-day mountain driving tour and accordingly expected tons of break dust / iron all over the place... following that, I did a regular car wash; now, another ten days later (street parking), I had Iron X in the mail and so did another wash, followed by Iron X application - absolutely no bleeding to be seen. I then applied it to the alloys, again nothing. Am I washing my car too thoroughly? :)
no you polished and waxed the car 4 weeks ago roughly. you decon'd before that prolly right.. but even if you didnt you will strip a lot of contamination off with a machine polish (you dont want to do that though). then you put a fresh coat of wax over the top. 4 weeks later you should not expect to see much fallout on the car really. washing the car wont remove bonded fallout. but it can take a while to build up. actually having protection even a wax should help reduce the fallout build up as well... In short your not doing anything wrong. although you should not be deconing the paintwork so soon after a polish and wax though. really you should do it as a precursor to polish and wax.
So essentially these chemicals speed up the rust oxidation process to remove the fallout particles, does this mean if your sills or arches or anywhere on the body of an older car are beginning to go are they best avoided as they're likely to speed up even the tiniest bit of body corrosion?
they dont speed up oxidation as such. they creat a chemical reaction to form a new oxide and this new oxide is water soluable. thye literally disolve rust into a liquid.
@@ForensicDetailingdid you ever have any problem with korrosol on chrome plastic mate? And wouid you say 2 mins dwell time is enough. 20degs in early evening in the shade. Uk
Here in the US there's a company that does Bilt Hamber stuff, but the price is really high and I've never tried any of it, even though basically every review of their stuff is brilliant. That being said, just looking at the bottle in this video their spray triggers look very similar to those used by Griot's Garage. The Griot's triggers are done in a red and white colour scheme, while the BH look to be blue and sort of frosted, but the shape of the spray head itself looks very similar. I can't be sure, but I wonder if those two companies get their spray heads from the same manufacturer somewhere.
I dont think they do aaron, but yer they look similiar. Ill double check though tommorrow if Im wrong Ill let you know. the BH bottles and triggers are cool. BH is well priced in the UK. would be a shame if its mega expensive in the states. Its a range that Im not sure how will it will go down over there. BH doesnt do like thick foamy soaps. It does not do scents or coloring. Its all industrial. but the quality of the chemicals are outstanding its all formulate to out perform and theres a focus on using materials which are safe and prevent corrosion in the range as well.
@@ForensicDetailing Thanks for the response, Jon. Now that I look at the Griot's spray trigger against the BH in the video, it looks like the heads are very similar but the actual trigger part is a bit different. Probably just a matter of quality tending to look a certain way, in the same way that the bad, cheap triggers mostly have a similar look as well. As far as the cost of B-H stuff here in the states, it's not completely outrageous to the point I would never buy any of it, and in fact I'm probably going to give in and order a bottle of their car shampoo, given how glowingly you've spoken of it. But it's basically like what you encountered doing the Griot's best of show detailing spray in your shootout video. The Griot's in the UK isn't SO expensive you couldn't justify spending on it if you really liked it the best of all available options, but the difference in price is enough that when you have multiple really good options in that given product type it's tough not to say well, I've heard good things about this one or do like it, but there's also this other really good offering that will run me $17.99 instead of $22.99, and that five bucks would pay for a couple nice new microfibers or part of a bottle of glass cleaner or just a beer or two at the tavern, you know? It's not that the BH products are outrageous, it's just that the import cost adds just enough to the price you definitely notice it and at least I personally tend to rationalise that the extra five bucks or whatever could be spent elsewhere. In a similar situation, I'm really curious to see if Griot's can establish any kind of foothold on your side of the pond, given they have only the one distributor and, it seems, a fairly premium price point. I'm a big Griot's fan; they're probably my favourite company overall in terms of their whole range of products (though I mostly mix and match stuff from several brands), but their products also have a decidedly old school sort of feel to them. No ceramics, no crazy new hybrid siloxane spray sealants like Gyeon or some of those companies. If the price is that extra bit higher, say three to five pounds, and their products are good but not particularly innovative, I wonder how much attention they're really be able to grab. For Bilt Hamber here in the US, it sounds like it might be a lack of flash or glossy labels promoting what are just high quality, purposely-formulated products that presents a similar hurdle to them finding that foothold.
As an engineer I really appreciate your methods of analysis. Have you ever considered trying to create a "best of" product by combining parts of, say the top 3 or 4 to create a better solution? Would be curious to see the results. Thanks.
Thanks for a GREAT series of youtube videos on detailing. Love your "forensic" style of rating products and common sense application. I have a couple of questions: Do you have any experience with CarPro TRIX (Tar and Fallout Remover)? And what is the correct detailing, step by step, process (maybe this would make a good video?). Step: 1) Rinse Car 2) Wash Car 3) Decon Car a) Tar/Sap Remover b) Fallout Remover 4) Clay 5) Polish 6) IPA/Cleanse 7) Seal 8) Wax Is that the correct order as many sites and product manufacturers suggest different orders. TBH I trust your advice MUCH more than any other site!!
I'm sure Jon uses autosmart tardis. Id say that would be the steps I'd take when detailing a car. Polish I'd use a machine polisher for that step. Want to do a full detail on my car however there's a few dents letting it down but I don't think I have to worry about it.
Usually there's a local "dent-master". You would be amazed at how good they are and generally pretty reasonable in cost. Find one with good recommendations though.
Are you able to use the bilt hamber on paint as an iron decontamination? I have heard some brands can be both wheel and paint decon. Wasn't sure if you knew the answer!
just dont let them dry and keep them away from gloss plastics trim and pourous trim. they help dislodge fallout so after turning purple agititate them with clean wash mitt. then really rinse the crap out of it them. rinse twice with pressure.

(trust me on that)
great stuff though m8 thanks for watchign and feeding back thats the name of the game...
I'm surprised to see Sonax Full Effect wasn't included in this test considering the brand is pretty big.
Nathanial Dupont and shiny garage 👌
Great review Jon. One thing I'd recommend with these products is always always wear eye protection.
@dooka detailing
So can you mention the difference between dooka's fallout remover + lemon scent ironX with the regular cherry IronX? What are the pros and cons to both active ingredients?
What a superb extensive test .... well done Sir.
Does a weak Bilt Hamber product exist.
Seems everything they make is brilliant.
I’ve been using their clay bars for years
They are cheaper than other makes
MADE IN THE 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍🏼
I love the Alfa Romeo parking sign you had on the wall I wish I could get one
The daddy of fallout remover reviews. Thanks Jon.
Thanks in advance and keep up the great content 👍
nothing new that topples bilt hamber.
@@ForensicDetailing appreciate the reply dude thanks 👍
I bought some surfex HD after watching one of your videos and have to say its unreal compared to valetpro which I was using before. Used the surfex hd neat on a steering box of an old vintage tractor and it worked an absolute treat taking off over 20 years of grease, oil and dirt in less than a minute blasting it with a seriously old k2 power washer. Unreal stuff.
I'd love to see a comparison of Korrosol vs. Auto Wheel Cleaner in dissolving iron fallout
Great video mate. Must of taken you ages! Cheers for the Hard work 👍🏻
I’ve used bilt and hamber for years now it’s great stuff plus it’s a British company
Another great video. Very informative. The fallout on the car didn't look like fallout tho. Looked more like mould/tree sap. I know it turned the product purple but a bird poop turns purple also.
Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel isn't even a fallout remover, it's a wheel cleaner. Their fallout remover is called Korrosol and it's amazing.
Wrong
@@tsotsi5254 I've used both professionally for years.
Does AutoWheel react? Yes.
So it is a fallout remover.
It is basically Korrosol with Surfex HD added into it.
I literally used it today. It reacted with iron and went purple.
🤣🤷🏼♂️
@@tomrafal3655 I mean, your literally commenting on a fallout remover test video, with said product involved in the iron fallout remover test….🤣😂😅…
Just found this channel today, thank you for your hardworking sir.
new review/test as always jon but would of been nice to see car chem revolt in this :) thanx again
Great review. Kinda surprised you chose the Auto Pro product in second place considering you didn't mention it at all during the review and it was never in the top 3 performers of any categories. I'm in the market for a good fallout remover and this review helped me a lot.
Outstanding description of fallout - very informative, thank you!
True, that's why I don't use iron removers often as I would like.
What would you use
@@MultiYassar Me or the guy that first commented?
I use an alkaline cleaner , a gentle alkaline cleaner , depends where you live wich products you can find .
Thanks
Very thorough, great information and a fair review.outstanding work.!!!!.
Good job mate. Now I know what to buy :)
Just one question. Which is better for the car paint. The korrosol or the auto wheel?
Amoth Jon I was informed that Korrosol and Auto Wheel are the same product. However, Auto Wheels has some ingredient which makes it more viscous to enable better cling to wheels.
I purchased Auto Wheels and just diluted it with water when used on paintwork.
666DW Thanks 666DW for your answer and for the tip about the diluting with water.👍🏻
Amoth Jon just be aware that Auto Wheels, although non acidic is a caustic product and will attack any metal plated components like unpainted brake callipers and wheel hubs, which will in a short time cause corrosion and unsightly rusty components.
@@666DW So in other words. It´s safer to get korrosol then ? Or Auto Wheels is good as long as I dilute.
Amoth Jon Both are pretty much the same product. If it was me I’d buy the Auto Wheels. However, when using try and avoid unpainted brake callipers and wheel hubs as much as you can👍🏻
Totally agree with you on those Triggers, Great Video!
Love you reviews. Well thought out and thorough. Well done!
Glad to find this vid, was about to order some wheel cleaning products
I really love how you test products. Unfortunately, most of the US/Canada available products were not tested (Optimum Ferrex, Dodojuice Ferrous Dweller, Meguiars (can't remember name of the product), and so on. If you could do a follow up video with the American products it would be amazing... perhaps a collaboration with a large US retailer like Autogeek?
Carpro and Bilt Hamber are available in Canada from Carzilla
@@henrysmith180 Yes, thet added Bilt Hamber last year, CarPro has been available here for a very long time
eagle one triple cleaning foam works good and cheap, good video brother
Do any of these products damage rubber/plastic? Im always worried about these chemicals stripping the natural oils from trim and bleaching them out. Any evidence of this with these chemicals? Thanks
non pourous plastic you have nothing to really worrying about other than normal kind of soap stains/minor surface ethching if it dries. pourous plastic if it dries on this it could stain and the residue can form patches which can be difficult to remove. always need to be carefull with FR's and hot panels and sunny days etc..
@@ForensicDetailing Great, thank you. :)
I’ve only used autobrite purple rain 2 would of been nice to see that in the mix I find it surperb .
Great review btw 👍
I also use purple rain, but the 3.0 version. It works amazingly well, and is competitively priced too.
I have CARPRO IRON X and I am pleased.
I used Bilthamber Autowheel as a result of this test and I like it also very much! But the sprayer is absolutely not suitable for this viscous liquid. I switched it for another one with larger trigger. Otherwise there's almost no atomization (straight spritz).
I dont find that dutch. the BH sprays are really good.. nice strong draw with the squeeze and good atomisation (you sure youve not just got it on stream setting, cant remember if they have 2 settings or not)
Really good tests Jon, felt like I was back at school, learning something actually interesting!
It's a bit of a bear to watch through such a lengthy video with such detailed information. I really wish there was a written version of all the info presented in this video (the test methodology, reasons for each test, and specific results).
John the us distributor is hs tuning they are only place I have seen or gotten bilt hamber products
I wish that Bilt Hember was sold in the US. I went with Nanoskin Iron Free because it is so cheap, works okay.
Killacamfoo O.G. There was one guy in the comments who had a link for a bilt hamber distributer in the USA. His name is Nick M
Awesome thanks, would these products harm trimming, and or glass?
no, as long as you dont let them dry. I dont tend to target rubber with them. but I do decon glass with them.
I forgot the names of the other iron removers I've used. I used car pro recently and plan to keep using it. Gonna clay my car and use it again to get a final impression on it
You need a Patreon site!! Keep up the good work!!
Did you find one???
thought somone called rubbishboyz was selling it, but its just a fallout remover, if its not cost viable to use pick a nice USA one.
Brilliant! Thanks for the test and great video.
Can I use Bilt Hamber auto wheel on my paintwork?
yes but I would go with korrosol. autowheels has a lot more detergent in it and other wheel cleaner "stuff" so on your panel if it dries could be like stronger residue issues.
I've just got bilt hamber 5L Jon but what percentage should I mix it?
Hi Jon. Are there any newer products since making this video that you would say is better than the winner here. Thanks Chris
Not that I know of Chris
@@ForensicDetailing so if you have an old ford will the sills and arches liquify with each use 😂
Great content. I was wondering if your opinion has changed as this video is 5 years old. What would you recommend now?
BH korrosol mate
I have a couple of questions:
Do you have any experience with CarPro TRIX (Tar and Fallout Remover)?
And what is the correct detailing, step by step, process (maybe this would make a good video?).
Step:
1) Rinse Car
2) Wash Car
3) Decon Car
a) Tar/Sap Remover
b) Fallout Remover
4) Clay
5) Polish
6) IPA/Cleanse
7) Seal
8) Wax
Is that the correct order as many sites and product manufacturers suggest different orders. TBH I trust your advice MUCH more than any other site!!
Not a bad products but you will be better off with a separate fallout and separate tar and glue remover :)..
Korrosol for paint autowheels for wheels
Holy crap..
You and project farm would pair great!
What a bleedin cracking review. Is there any danger in using the BH on paintwork?
just dont let them dry and keep them away from gloss plastics trim and pourous trim. they help dislodge fallout so after turning purple agititate them with clean wash mitt. then really rinse the crap out of it them. rinse twice with pressure.
I'm getting a whole new education. Great video.
