I love the Rokinons unapologetically. They are sharp, and fast lenses. I’m only going to upgrade to anamorphic. The Zeiss has history and are the best option to build into anamorphic but the zeiss character isn’t’t THAT apparent.
Agree 100% with this video. I had started a set of Rokinons, and sold it. Now i have the Sigma Art 18-35 f1.8 and the 24-105 which are great sharp lenses. And started a set of vintage Nikons, already have a 28mm f2.8 ai and a series e 50mm f1.8. Also a Pentax Super Takumar 55mm f1.8, and will buy a whole set of those too. Cool thing is that both the Nikons and Takumars can be adapted to EF perfectly so i can use them with my Metabones SB xl0.64 making them faster. Gotta love vintage lenses.
Dude you genuinely make some of the best videos on UA-cam. Appreciate the time you put into these. I was just about to buy some vintage lenses then found a site that said almost all the ones I was going after were radioactive. Not sure yet if it’s just bs but need to read into it. Going to look at these though. Thanks again for all your videos.
Are they the Takumar’s? It’s not a big deal, Canon FD’s (the older ones) have it as well. The biggest downside to them is that the glass gets yellow, so you have to constantly be baking the lenses with a strong UV light.
Justin Phillip yes the Takumar and FDs. I have the Helios 44-2 which apparently doesn’t have that Thorium coating that is the issue. I don’t even have kids but the idea of a kid somehow getting hold of it and putting it in their mouth or the particles being inhaled isn’t great. Then again as you said the levels of radioactivity isn’t probable a big deal. Looking forward to trying these out.
I faced the same problem with Rokinon cine ds lens. At the time I bought 16mm T2.2, I found the same problem you mentioned with focus ring: just like some sands in the ring. Then I exchanged it in the next business day. Sounds like Rokinon’s quality control doesn’t work well.
Eric Coen i missed my window because I didn’t put my Rokinon 100mm macro NEW through the paces.. scratchy and dust spots/shadows from the get go new in the box. Past exchange date though never used. Shame on me. Cost to fix is more than a used Nikon Macro (Micro) that would be a better lens anyway. Oh well.. live and learn.
Great video! Unfortunately Simmod has temporarily shut down their store due to Covid 19. Which is a bummer because I just got my Canon FD 55mm 1.2 that I was looking forward to having them mod. Recently got my FD 28mm back from them, and am thrilled with it. Only strange thing was that they didn't put a red dot to line it up properly when I mount it to my Metabones.
Awesome video! I really love the look of the images and video these lenses produce. I have a sigma 35mm f1.4 and when i compare that picture to that of the carl zeiss theres' just no comparison. You're right, everythings sharp and looks too clinical, but not with vintage lenses. Its also quite fun having to use manual focus.
Good review. I agree with going vintage, but a pro-friend's Contax 28mm f2 from the 70s broke down and he says Zeiss won't repair it. Leica will repair any lens they've manufactured since 1964, but at a hefty price.
If you want cine primes and you have the bmpcc 4k DON’T buy a Meike cine prime, if you do you will regret it! Why, because if you get one you’ll end up having an uncontrollable need to buy another and yet another and the only way you’ll stop is if you go broke or buy the full range. They are built like a tank and do a fantastic job especially for the price. You’ve been warned!
Hi! I see you are working on a set of contax but you have one or two of the latest generation "classics" right? I wondering why you choose to go the contax track? Do you think the older contax have better picture or is it a price issue? I myself got the classic planar 50mm ZE (got a really good price), and thinking about getting the 35mm (ZE or ZF with EF adapter) or just make a turn and go the contax track.
Andreas Lind I wouldnt go with ZE’s, they dont have a physical aperture ring. The classic’s are nice, i may end up ditching all of my Contax (except for the Hollywood) and go all ZF.2
If I only had to get 3-4 lenses and want them in way that I can do almost any shot with them in mostly filmmaking and not on a huge budget let's say I wanna spend like 1000-1500$ on lenses, would going with 18mm f4, 28mm f2.8 and 50mm 1.4 be my best option? Which 3 would you pick out of this list (18mm f4, 21mm f2.8, 25mm f2.8, 28mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4)? Also what adapter would I need if I wanted to use these lenses on bmpcc6k or s1h? Thank you so much!
If those were my only choices, i would prolly go for 18, 28 & the 50. adapter is dependent on what brand of lenses you chose. P6K is EF, so not as wide variety as RF or L mount, but still lots of nice options for vintage
@@JustinPhillip Thanks for the response! Would these 3 Zeiss lenses help me capture shots a bit similar to "Tim Kellner - valley of the shadow" video and does the Zeiss lineup give a similara look to that? His video was shot with Leica R lenses and I've heard the closest affordable look to Leica is the Contax Zeiss lineup. Would you agree with that?
Yannick Galaske Yeah sure it would. The 2.8’s are great. Both my 35 & 85 are 2.8’s. They are a little slower, but sharp wide open, so mine just live at f/2.8
Hey Justin, Can I use these Zeiss lenses for my GH5? As I noticed the mount was for Nikon. Zeiss is from Germany, they make great lenses. I own x2 Sigma art 18-35mm lenses.
Great video Justin. Thank you for your sharing because it makes me think. If you have time, I would appreciate your opinion. I am an "advanced" amateur not a pro. I was used to shoot with C/Y but recently I had a home theft and, among other things, my lens collection was stolen. Then I decided to move to modern Voigtlander lenses to match to my Sony A7RII. Ehm... I don't know but I think I miss something. That's my questions: do you think it's just my "perception" or... there is a technical reasons for my nostalgia? With a 62mp (Sony A7R IV) which lenses would perform better? Modern MF lenses (Voigts) or the old C/Y with the old design and T coatings? I am really torn about selling all my modern CVs stuff and to build another C/Y set-up from scratch. What do you think? Ciao from Italy.
Nice video. Please tell me, would you recommend to use carl zeiss contax lenses on pocket 4k with viltrox? i want to have for example 35mm full frame. And i want for this to use carl zeiss distagon 25mm f2.8 with viltrox. Thank you
Yeah it’ll be great. However for full frame equivalent, you will need Metabones XL. The viltrox is going to give you the Super 35 equivalent frame size
I also like the contax zeisses. And I bitterly regret selling my german made (no ninja stars warmer colors) 85 1.4 . It was a stellar lens with that lovely 3d rendering that only few lenses in the world can reproduce. But i also love the yashicas. They are really close to the zeisses (build in the same factory as the JJ zeisses). I do own the 12mm t2.2 samyang vdsrl and use it quite a lot with my BMPCC4K. By the way you have a weird red color problem on that lens blower there in the background.
Hi Justin please suggest some lens options for full frame cameras, for video even if it is a photo lens ,for prime $500 - $600 for primes, for zoom lenses $1500. I am unable to find a good lens
Good video I love the dog bark at the end of the intro can I be your fam maybe you can hand them down to me lol JK I love Zeiss lenses what do you think about Hasselblad?
Great review! I also have a set of Rokinon Cine and Cine DS. People ask me and I say they are great for the money and first set. I shoot a lot with my 1960-1990 Nikon’s fixed and a couple zooms for a lot of projects and most of the time Rokinon’s are are clinically better and faster, but I end up shooting a lot with my Nikons or old Zenit.. I may get a couple new Zenit recreations. But back to Rokinon, I bought a set after I lost everything in the fires a couple years ago and when I actually used my Rokinon 100mm macro... it was grinding from the factory and it was past 12 months since I purchased, so they wouldn’t look at it for less than $300.... well, joy... I can get a used Nikon Macro 200mm for less money.. or a Nikon Macro 105mm macro that would blow it away for $150. I also wouldn’t buy used Rokinon’s from ebay... never know what problem you are getting and new Rokinon’s are cheap. You can get used from from Adorama and Bh.. just thoroughly test them before the return expires. But yes I love my old Nikon’s that I have shot with film since 1985 and the lenses where used then... luckily most where with me during the California fires.. so most of them survived, and the ones didn’t I replaced from the used market (ebay) with no problems.. Especially purchasing from Japan. Good used market there for Nikon’s. Same price as US used market after shipping, (2 weeks) but always in top quality used.. not beat down Adorama with ***. (Doesn’t focus, rattles, etc.... oh my god don’t let the return window pass before checking out your used lenses for dark spots, dust, etc at all apertures). But yeah. First starting out? Nikon or Canon old MF lenses. Probably stick with them, if you need the extra couple of stops and focus/aperture gears, then get a couple Rokinon’s. They are decent, though I believe there are some better similarly priced lenses out now. I WOULD NOT INVEST IN THE ROKINON XEEN. Just go with Zeiss. Will be happier. Totally agree with Zeiss lenses for commercial work. People who pay money know. People who pay low might know.. Even people who don’t pay money and you are helping out a small event might know enough to ask. And yes, glass will outlast your next three cameras, unless they burn up in the fire.... but your insurance will reimburse you if you replace them. I’m heading in the opposite direction lately. Lensbaby Velvet series or Lomography Degaurotype Achromatic 64... totally the opposite from fast commercial lenses... but that is where I’m heading for 2020/2021 projects. :)

Also, can someone tell my why a single zoom lens that covers the range of 2 or 3 prime lenses isn't a good idea? Well... Would you have traded Rokinon Cine lenses for vintage Nikon Nikkor lens set?
Yupp
OK much thanks
Guys I didn't finish my set yet...Leica R are better for cinematic look, buy those lenses!
Twice the price, tho!
@@JustinPhillip true, but the market is a bit better with the Leica R.
Oh man, I can't find the Zeiss C/Y 35 F1.4 and a good 85 F1.4 in Europe...the F2.8 are a bit slow for my needs :(
Luca Bono On a speedbooster they’re equivalent of an f/2 .
Rokinon is a good starter lens, but like you said, they let you down when you know what you're looking for.
Dang If my AC was that close id feel alittle uncomfortable ....lol
Endure Films On the hospital bed? 🤣🤣 Gotta do what you gotta do
@@JustinPhillip @ 2:24. def cant see a hospital bed 😂
Endure Films Oh yea!! 🤣🤣 We were shooting in a hospital set in Anaheim and used a hospital bed as a dolly 🤣
It is a strange idea to compare a budget consumer’s Rokinon/Samyang (no matter if this lens has a proud badge “cinema”) with professional cinema Zeiss. Zeiss is better... of course, Cap!!!
Cool Justin ... I have Rokinon and an assortment of vintage glass, plus the 18-35 ...
You're opinion resonates with me.
So much fun finding classic lenses, adapters, and finding an aesthetic that works!
Stay safe bro ... Dave ✌😃✌
Dave DeVola Awesome! Thanks, same to you! Glad to hear it
You mean sigma 18-35 photo lens?
Great vid but can you stop driving up the price of zeiss classics i'm trying to build a complete set
Yeah man, you aint kidding! I saw today, the price of the Hollywood has doubled since i bought it last year!
I agree Rokinons are a brginers way into film making....that bring said the thing was said about R & B music then hip hop came and CRUSHED the music game..... ART IS ART use what you like. Nobody knows what brushes or paint Michelangelo used😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Is it just me, or does anyone else thinks that metabones are slightly ruining the image?
Oliver Cukor Yeah i think you’re on to something there! Can’t wait to get the Komodo!
Wrong ! I have the same kit optics, i use it evryday since 5 years with my Canon EOS C500, i Can Say i haven't see any difference with optics 10 times the Price of rokinon...you love just to follow the big studios and dream to be a great movie maker with arri and Zeis...
I want to do make a feature film with Red Komodo. Please suggest me,whats lens I purchase for best resolution.
I got the Rokinon 14mm for real estate shots... Absolutely unusable bbecause of the amount of distortion
Charlie Stevens I used to use both the 10 & the 16 when i did real estate 👌🏼
@@JustinPhillip Gotcha, was using a Canon M50 with speedbooster to get full frame 14mm equivalent before. Just recently got the bmpcc4k and a Tamron 11-20. Which is plenty wide enough.
Good to know the 10 and 16mm have less distortion though 🤘 Loving the down to earth content you're putting out btw
Charlie Stevens Thanks Charlie! Full frame the 10 does vignette tho. But yeah that Tokina is a good one as well, better than the 11-16
If you care about what people think about your gear, you might be from Hollyweird. Your work should speak for itself, not your gear.
Mason Combs In a perfect world that would be great. But unfortunately in my town, at my level, its hard to get guys to look at your website if you dont a own RED or Alexa
@@JustinPhillip just know the rest of the country is not that shallow. And yes, you can be successful outside of California... and pay less taxes too.
First comment, I win!
Your information is incorrect. Also there's 3 versions but the grinding your talking about doesn't exist, you probably had faulty item. You really need to check and verify your information or you start looking like a amateur
Sideline Media Films What exactly is incorrect? And no, you should research the grinding. That’s a thing. Just ask Joshua Martin
