Hi Derek. They were used to store canal stop-planks in. Now blocked off because people liked climbing inside and I believe were often used as shelters by homeless folk and so on. Shame really, if they keep someone from hypothermia, no harm done. Oh well, good old Health and Safety. :|
Kevin, I am finally resuming season 9 and I must say I am enjoying it immensely as I knew I would. I will catch up with the work you have posted since. Just wanted you to know it is so much appreciated. Thank you!
A ride along with Country House Gent and Aslan?? Nothing could be more calming... Honestly Kevin, they're never long enough... but we look forward to every episode!! Cheers from Tennessee, USA
Great vlog. As a Military man of 40 years service, most of it on diesel submarines, I can tell you the talk around the dinner table was of family, arguing who had the biggest portion of Arctic Roll, selecting the movie (if we weren’t on patrol) and how to survive in such crap conditions. If you think a narrowboat is cramped !!!!! Thanks for sharing your time with us. AJ
Your videos are in fact, beautifully crafted documentaries. "Travels by Narrowboat" gives so many followers the pleasures of the canal boating experience from wherever we are in the world. My spirits lift whenever I see a new episode, so much so that I defer watching until I can wait no more for this vicarious experience. So Kevin, you are continuously pleasing an international audience from all corners of the globe!
I'm very pleased to hear that. Whenever I see the word "vlog" mentioned in the comments, it tends to 'grate' a little. So much so I've ordered a t-shirt with "I'm a filmmaker, not a vlogger" printed on it. 🙂
I've watched all the videos but I'm wondering can you help me with episode where your running to the lock and twist your ankle it one of the best thi gs I've ever seen 😂 as I've done it many times and feel your pain
@alansmithblackett5786 Sure, Alan. Your request brought back some painful memories. Took 4 months to heal as I'd actually torn a ligament in my hip. How I carried on cruising and doing the rest of the locks I don't know. Wadda guy. 😁ua-cam.com/video/BMRl3RCleVY/v-deo.html At 10mins 18seconds.
Fridays are such good days. A video from the boys up north who used to be on the canals and you CGH, time to wind down before the weekend with whatever the world has thrown at us behind. Very nice and many thanks.
Good to see a video from you. Actually conversation with the firing range people is more like: "That silly lieutenant almost blew his foot off again. Cannot believe they let him touch a rifle...."
I was checking to see if anybody else had noticed! I reckon many will have heard the Irish phrase, but like many others Irish phrases, as you're probably aware, it's pronounced quite differently to how many might imagine!😅
"The things I thought I could never live without . . " Wise words, Kevin! What we all could live without, I dare say, are military firing ranges. Such a lovely contrast to chug along with you and Aslan as the high-speed trains move people through space, missing the view and all those things that are truly important.
Thank you, Kevin for continuing to take us along on your canal journey. Your posts have such a calming and centering effect on me, especially after a long work-week. There are many narrow boat vlogs out there, but yours is the only one that rings true!
I totally CONCUR with our Tenessee contributor. Always a relaxing Vlog, apart from thr Desperate race to find the missing Mooring Chain. Phew ! That was a close one ! You DO know that you SHOULD have bought TWO spare chains, because soon you're going to drop one in a canal somewhere ! And I'll be able to say, ......... ooh that's a pity, should have bought 2 ! Thanks for the relaxation Kevin, ! Keep safe, take care ! Stu xx
I swear, listening to Aslan's chug chug chug lowers my blood pressure 😉 I always find myself wanting to duck my head when you go under some of those bridges! Love seeing the villages & countryside; I'm amazed at how early in the year so much is green there - isn't it still quite chilly? Thanks for the episode, Kevin!
Cheers. Yes it's not bad but does have some less enjoyable moments from time to time. Thankfully, for me at least, those are few and far between, fingers crossed.
Your episodes are better than meditation and a snuggly blanket. It's so wonderful that you exist, and even nicer that you share this tranquility with us. 🥰 BC (New Orleans area via Basingstoke)
Thanks for the interesting ride, Kevin. I certainly hope that milk you managed to get lasted you until you got to the next place where you could find a proper shop. Glad you got your coffee! The better video showing what’s next means I’m going right now to that episode.
Well I’ve now had my weekly medication to lower my blood pressure. Beautiful video. Happy you got your chain and a spare. Ouch at the end. But more to come.
@@CountryHouseGent Thank you for your kind comment, am still on boat (on a river mooring, not my choice), I wish I had kept a diary because the many years we had were hilarious/scary/moving and an endless adventure, I wish you also many memories 🦆💕
Perfect!! Sounds of Aslan and a tour of the canal. Poured a glass of wine, sat back and calmly listened. Love how you notice things missing, or added, from previous seasons. Like the park bench under the bridge and you show us!! Really nice. Well done Kevin great episode. Went too fast.
I know exactly what you mean about getting rid of stuff that you couldn’t do without. Maybe it’s just part of getting older….. Great video. Thanks Kevin! 👍👍👍👊😎
Ahoy Country House Gent 👋. I just discovered your channel and wow! Awesome! Now this is the pace of life that is just right! Looking forward to watching and learning more. Cheers ✌️
Hello Kevin, that was a very pleasant ride with you and Aslan through some rather nice countryside. Looks like it was a bit damp and cold though. Hope the latte warmed you up. We’ve had quite a lot of snow on Skye recently and the mountains have looked stunning. Back to wind and rain again with a little sunshine from time to time. So looking forward to spring proper. Love from Connie.
Well, I don't know how many other narrowboats might have the same engine that auld Aslan has, so that thumping might just be a rare thing indeed. I follow several narrowboaters vlogs and each has a craft with a different sounding powerplant. It is rather strange that (a) I don't live in the U.K. and (b) I don't even own a watercraft of ANY description (I did once have a canoe...) but there is something ...well... comforting in watching someone going from point A to point B ... at a walking pace... and not trying to overtake the next boat...and seeing a landscape that has seen thousands of years of history. Well, half of my ancestry is North American "First Nations" , so that lineage goes back more than 20,000 years in the Americas. The Scottish side... ??? It is interesting to trace the history on the landscape and much can be seen if one knows what to look for. Keep auld Aslan thumping along.
I especially enjoyed your musings about dinner conversation for those work on the firing range. I wonder similar things. By the way, I've never mentioned how much I like your theme song at the opening. I am glad your chain was there and also that you've now got your extra. Until next time, from Texas, Leigh.
Kevin I have just came across you this is second video of yours I have watched and made comment on I love watching narrowboat stuff when I have some chill time yours is the best ever your song makes me smile and you seem to be a foodie ( like me 😃) your an absolute pleasure to watch God bless you always
Pulling into the marina with all of the boats for rent must give you a great feeling knowing you have Aslan. You can go where you want, when you want for as long as you want. That’s freedom & freedom is hard to beat. Kevin, remember to add those 4 miles to your “miles traveled log” 😂 I went through the same process of elimination when I retired to my boat. After the initial shock I found it to be a liberating experience. I won’t go back. Don’t need it. Don’t want it. Aaahhhh.
That was fasest 26.51 miutes I've experienced David, you deliverd but ...selfish me,...I would of stayed glued to the screen as you went down the Rhine , we musta run out of time . I admit slight envy of the life you have, but I truly enjoy living vicariously through your videos. Thank you.
As a recently new viewer I'm really enjoying your weekly vlogs. That massively protruding tree just after Whittington (17m 10 secs) is now sorted. Me and some fellow IWA volunteers cut it right back last month. I wish we could do something about that shallow part in Fisherwick with the encroaching reeds, but it needs a dredger and CRT will only deal with it if they get enough complaints from boaters.
Holy smokes!!! Its CHG and Aslan!!!! Fabulous!!!! I hope you're cooking something cause I loves your cooking recipes and follow along eagerly!!!! You're awesome Kevin and love your new tune!!
Kevin, welcome back! Now, please dont take this the wrong way but this episode is where I feel you finally fully returned. The first few just felt a bit "lethargic", shall we say. I laughed, I cried, I deja-vued (ok, well, maybe I didnt cry but you take my meaning). P.S. Love the new intro!
Hello! I just wanted you to know that I discovered you through Amazon prime 😆 so shout out to them and to you and Aslan! My family and I now dream, of at the very least, renting a narrow boat for a vacation some day, and because of you I have fantasies of leaving it all behind for the canal life 😅. The only thing I kept saying throughout the episodes on Amazon was I wish he'd show us more of his day to day goings on inside the boat, other then your cooking segments of course.. Anyways your videos are great, I'm jealous, you're so lucky to have that life 😊 Good luck and I'll surely be watching.
Cheers for watching on Amazon. 🙂 Over the years I've shown, talked about and covered pretty much every part of boat life, both on Amazon and UA-cam. Besides cooking, shaving, getting dressed and laying in bed, I'm not sure what else to show - stuff that won't get me banned off UA-cam that is. 🫣
I lived in a harbor in the Florida Keys for about six months a few years back. We had a Wind generator which I think was on its last legs or the battery bank was going bad because even after blowing all day and all night long we could only get one 120w light bulb to dimly light up the cabin for about 45 minutes a night! Not to mention when the wind really start kicking up they can get loud, and annoying. My advice would be to add a couple more panels if you're looking for more power!
Hiya , re wind Genny's I had a little Rutland on my boat , but I was in the of the Orwell river not on a canal boat , used to regularly knock out 5 amps an hour .. 60 watts on river wind mounted on a 3ft pole . . But I have no idea how windy canals are ! Was my main source of too up after the lister engine . And this was 25 years back . Things have improved. I'd say buy a wind speed measure and leave it in place . See what winds you get at diff heights . Cheers Kevin for a great show . Every time .
I had a laugh at the sign that says “Cyclists Dismount”. I should think that goes without saying in that spot, but eh, some must need reminding I guess.- lol Lovely cruise once again! Thank you! 😊
Hi kevin, we love your travels, its funny to see the 'cyclists dismount' sign is still in whittington that we fished out last summer! 😂, we are keen to see if you pass our historic narrowboat 'Xebec' outside Alvecote marina. Happy travels and we hope to meet you some day 👍
If you want a wind turbine for low cost, you might consider building your own - if you can get to a car breakers yard, you can find the parts you need: An old alternator and a radiator fan or fan clutch assembly to use as the turbine blades. Bolt the fan blades to the alternator spindle, make a mounting bracket to hold it, with a roller bearing or ball bearing to allow it to swivel, and a triangular piece of metal or wood sticking out the back to use as the "sail", which keeps it facing into the wind when the wind direction changes. An alternator is ideal as a DIY generator for several reasons: For a start, it is designed to do the job, much better than using an old DC motor run backwards as a dynamo. It can also put out a fair amount of power - modern alternators are rated for at least a kilowatt, with some capable of making nearly 2 kilowatts. Most importantly, it has an integrated rectifier and voltage regulator, so will always put out exactly the voltage you need for charging lead-acid batteries no matter how fast it spins. Which is what it does in a car - the alternator is spun by the engine by a belt, and the engine speed changes a lot in that situation. Since you presumably have an alternator on board which is driven by the boat engine, you should be able to connect the DIY alternator wind turbine to the same charging circuit without much difficulty. If the voltage output from both alternators is the same (which it should be if the voltage regulators on both are working properly) then the charging circuit should be able to use power from both of them at the same time - if you want to be able to use the DIY wind turbine while you are chugging along, that is. There are many instructional videos on youtube which describe how to do this, if you want to give it a go.
I'm wondering why all of the bridges around there seem to have compartments underneath them?
Hi Derek. They were used to store canal stop-planks in. Now blocked off because people liked climbing inside and I believe were often used as shelters by homeless folk and so on. Shame really, if they keep someone from hypothermia, no harm done. Oh well, good old Health and Safety. :|

Cool, often fancied studying for a psychology degree, Paul. Now tell me about your childhood. :)
Hi Jim. The canals can get quite windy at times. Sometimes worryingly so.
Thank you for another awesome video, Kevin.
A pleasure as always, Mitch.
I had a laugh at the sign that says “Cyclists Dismount”. I should think that goes without saying in that spot, but eh, some must need reminding I guess.- lol
Lovely cruise once again! Thank you! 😊
Thank you for that. To be honest, in this modern world, I wouldn't dare to second-guess someone's ability to cope with unfamiliar situations. 🤭
Hi kevin, we love your travels, its funny to see the 'cyclists dismount' sign is still in whittington that we fished out last summer! 😂, we are keen to see if you pass our historic narrowboat 'Xebec' outside Alvecote marina.
Happy travels and we hope to meet you some day 👍
Pog Mo Thoin! Hah!😀
Love your videos can’t wait till the next one 😊👍
Wow. Impressive skills and vocabulary! ("integrated rectifier" I think I could use one of those!)
