My Home in America & Tokyo: Share house Tour

- I've lived in Japan two times, once from 2016-2017 studying Japanese and now studying politics at Waseda University. Each time I lived in the same share house with my Chinese friends. This is a comparison of my home in the US and my home now. It's a big change, but I've lived in hostels, dorms, and boarding houses for a long time now. This is the reality of living in Japan. Enjoy my share house tour!

The authentic nature of your content is extremely satisfying and makes you incredibly likable. I studied in France when I was young and it was maybe the biggest single influence of my life. If you study abroad it changes you indelibly. Keep up the brilliant posts. I fear for your future in political science as you might have another calling...
That's so cool that you studied in France. Europe is a very culturally rich place. Ha ha, like what job? Full time youtuber? lol I don't know about that, but these videos are so simple and easy to make that I can continue to make them and work a normal job.
Oriental Pearl you have a very personable authentic style and I see you hosting travel shows or you just might become a big UA-cam ⭐️. 😉. I watch videos with a similar theme as yours and their videos are not nearly the level of yours, their subscribers should be yours soon.
@@OrientalPearl I agree with Mini. See if you can monetize these videos. For example, can you strike deals with places like "red bull", etc. Send their SEO people a tweet w/ this link saying - hey - I should get paid for promoting you! I am thinking of trying competitor X :-)
Guerilla marketing can yield you nice wages above and beyond what you might be able to find in traditional jobs.
#1) guerilla marketing
#2) of course monetize these youtube videos - which I am sure you are doing
#3) See if you can do any segment specifically for a company meshes into your life. I remember that video you did of the unused bikes in China. Perhaps you have a favorite Raman shop you like to go to.. hmmm - maybe they might pay you to raise their profile????

Just discovered you channel and love your vids. I studied “abroad” (Quebec and France) but it pales in comparison to your studying in China and Japan. What a great ambassador you are. Impressive.
Welcome! Thanks for finding my channel. I appreciate your comment. I hope to break some stereotypes that Americans or Westerners are rude and obnoxious abroad and don't speak and any other languages.
Another good video! You do a great job letting the images tell most of the story and your comments are just the right mix of depth and cuteness!
WhereMyChicken wow, thank you so much. Nobody watched this for months, so for a long time I thought it must not be a very good video.
@@OrientalPearl no way! I smile at them all even if I am in the next room for a few seconds. They will stand the test of time, you'll see.
WhereMyChicken That means a lot. Thank you.
Your bemusement belies your enthuasiasm. Bravo! I went to school abroad and recommend highly to everyone. It is an eye-opener. You quickly realize the things you take for granted but more importantly, you also realize the things that are really important and that although people do things differently, it all works.
That's right! The thing I too for granted the most before was a private bathroom lol
Hi! I love your video! I am an Chinese international student who studied in Grand Rapid for two years for my high school. I definitely agree with you about “you don’t have to have a boat, all you need is know someone who have a boat”. Lol, I use my neighbor’s boat all the time!
Wow, you and I are like opposites! You studied in Michigan and I studied in China.
I found your channel and subscribed during the first quarantine period here in MI. I remember watching this during that time. I'm glad I rewatched it today.
Thanks so much for rewatching the old videos. I hope you can see the improvement in the editing.
Thank you for sharing this aspect of your life. It does help us understand you better. You have to be very devoted to your studies to live so humbly.
Thanks so much. I've lived a low-key life for a very long time.
Thanks for doing these videos. I'm learning a lot about Japan as well as the language.
I wish I had done this when I was young and had focused on my love of languages. At that time I wanted to be a French major. Now I am 70 and trying to learn about 4 languages, but slowly. You have done really done well. Live the dream life now and then settle down.
That's amazing that you are still learning so many languages. Keep up the good work!
And of now I learn Japanese and I love looking your videos ,I truly learn along with the course I have is helping me to gate my goal.privat teacher and a super made lake you teacher .Arikato.
thanks for the tour. reminds me when i left my hometown to pursue my studies in the city.
Merry Christmas ,and happy new year for you and all of you.
Thanks you too!
I loved this video! It was so cool to see what a place in Japan was like. I left Ireland in 2011 to work in Greece for the summer. It was a great experience but I missed home. I admire you for the length of time you’ve been away since 2012 that’s incredible. 😊
Ireland is a great place too! I went there in 2016
Your videos are so entertaining. I have yet to travel abroad but one day I will and Japan is where I want to visit first.
did you manage to go Japan ?
You are very brave.
Thanks for sharing.
i love your videos so much !!
Great video I can’t believe I had not seen this one before. Thanks for sharing. I personally would love to do something like this because I enjoy experiencing other cultures as long as respect is high among roommates
I’m glad that you finally saw it.
Great video, very interesting, keep them coming
Loooooooove your Channel ❣️ ... Definately yes, i would love to study abroad.
You should! And some countries are more reasonably priced. Japan is pretty expensive for study abroad though.
Hi there. I like your channel.
Love to visit Japan 1 day in the mid time I'm glad you take some time and make this good videos, I really appreciate. Thanks
I hope that you have a chance to come and enjoy Japan!
Now I understand why you go out to talk to people every day after viewing your Tokyo house tour
I need to get out into the sunlight lol
Woow...your house was what we called Banglow...you were so happiness in USA.
Your life in other country really different that what u had in USA. NICE to see your lifestyle, you should explore your lifestyle more and more so I can know about you
I will bring it up more in future videos. I'm kind of a minimalist.
Faux Window is worth to try hahaha :D
That might help
Love the videos! I studied abroad in Kyoto about 10 years ago. Miss it so much! Just started studying Chinese too. Mostly because I can't stop watching Chinese television dramas 😅!
That's so cool! You were in Japan for a long time. Good luck with Chinese, it's fun.
Yes, I would really like to live abroad to study and be saturated in another culture!! I admire your courage and spirit of adventure. I have been invited to live in Brazil and Zambia, but I have not taken the plunge yet. Thanks again for sharing in such a genuine way. I have not watched television in many years, but I enjoy your videos :)
I can relate to your opinion about TV. I haven't watched much in the last 8 years either. Seems like the stuff going on around me is more interesting. Zambia and Brazil would be cool places to go!
Omg! I’m just half way through this video but that is an amazing deal!! I live in Washington DC and even if you could get a room in a shared house for that price it would absolutely not be within ten minutes to the metro. It would also be pretty dangerous. This looks amazing!!
Oh Yes !!! I definitely would take that chance to leave everything behind and study abroad. 👍 I like adventure! 👍
Wow, I'm so impressed looking at this reality. For me, I study in the US and appreciate large space even at home. I see how much you sacrifice as American to get new, exciting experiences in Japan. But for sure it'll help you make your own story in life. I hope that you visit South Korea and share what you think because I'm so curious as Korean.
I’ve learned to live with a lot less here. Lol
Wow, the houses in Michigan are so beautiful! :o
I feel grateful for my wide, southern exposure and beautiful greenery outside. But I pay a bit over 100,000 yen and it is in Yokohama, 30 minutes from Shibuya. We call in a "danchi" which is a sort of residential development. Basically, concrete apartment buildings of a non-luxurious type. No elevators.
Great video, I hope you and your house mates all get on well together. 8 people under one roof can get tense if there are people who don't get along. Considering you are in Tokyo I thought the rent was going to much higher, I guess your landlord has a heart.
That's right. Somehow we get along really well though.
You were very courageous!😱
Cool!! I am obsessed with your videos lately - please don't stop posting :)
I just moved to Michigan from Vancouver, Canada. Looking forward to the Summer here now - minus the you know what...
Welcome to Michigan. I'm not at home right now, but I still say welcome. lol I'm really glad that you found the channel. Please stay in touch!
I understand why you had to film everything with the wide angle option. That looks cramped haha! Very nice to see how you live!
lol, that's true. Otherwise all you would see it the wall.
I left it too late to study abroad. Yes, one can pack up and go at any time but I am now in my 50s with family and commitments. I would encourage anyone much younger to consider doing so as I believe it greatly enriches one's life to experience other cultures, never mind the benefits of learning other languages. I wrestle with Greek and Japanese but really should have spent time in those countries as I miss the nuances. Thank you for your interesting, funny and informative videos.
It's never too late. Some of my colleagues with kids moved their whole family over to Asia and started working here.
At the time I was too interested playing rugby at university to consider studying abroad 😂. I really wish I had though. So now I'm hoping my company will send me on short assignments to Tokyo. So at least now I'll be able to stay in a nice hotel and be able to afford lots of cool things!
"share house" This is new vocabulary. We used to call them, "gaijin houses" even if the local people sometimes lived in them. My final gaijin house was an old company dormitory that had been repurposed. It was just over the line from Yokohama, in Kawasaki. It was great having fairly wide hallways and spacious stairways. It was a 2-story building. There was a big rest-room on each floor and they were both unisex. No problems. There was a big common room and a common kitchen. It was on a hill overlooking a freeway (but no noise in the building). There was a nice view of Fuji-san when the sky was clear (winter). I really enjoyed it. Lived there for about one year. The rent was 66,000 yen.
Love the insight into your Japanese life. The laws must be lax around rooms without windows. Serious fire safety issue.
dude - Tokyo is an extremely confined space. packed ... they don't have that luxury.
@@vandysfam the luxury of safeguarding human life? Safe living conditions are simply part of human rights.

Now i understand better your life with Chinese community in Japan and respect to your life style between 3 cultures Sweetie and take care yourself ..
Momo Kadawi Thanks. I’m involved in the Chinese community in Japan and the Japanese community in China. Lol!
I have studying abroad and living abroad half of my life speak 3 languages but I've been very spoiled all the way with lifestyles and stuff... I do appreciate people who can live in the minimalism.
Sometimes the things we own end up owning us. Isn't that a line from the movie "Fight club" lol
I am in California trying to re-learn all 3 languages - which I took in high school, but basically forgot 90% of it. I still am able to do a wicked "imitation" where my pronunciation was so good that I fooled a Chinese camera crew into thinking I was fluent, and impressed 6 different young traveling girls who were here for English studies - evenly divided into Chinese, Korean. and Japanese. The Chinese girl, who was very attractive (as were the others) was also unexpectedly very bold. She basically did a cold approach to me at a bus stop. I was so surprised because I didn't expect this kind of behavior from an Asian girl! I remember she said once: "I am very proud to be Chinese." I spent several enjoyable weeks with all of them - wonderful memories.
How did you get the chance to run into a Chinese camera crew? That's pretty cool.
@@OrientalPearl It was just pure serendipity, as we were walking next to each other down the street. I think they were doing a travelogue video, or something similar.
Funabashi spoiled me. I had a large apartment all to myself. I lived in a building with 7 other gaijin, each with our own apartments.
I've been in China for a month last year and then Africa. Now I'm planning to go back to Asia, Japan maybe or in the south east, probably my "best destination" in the whole world. Anyway, your experience is very interesting, funny and formative. Keep going, there are a lot of places and things to discover out there. 😉 Big hug
Rafael Mangrone Thanks so much. I envy you for getting to go to Africa. I want to go too.
I tried study abroad in Poland but it didn't work out, unfortunately. But I'm still living in Poland and am going on my 6th or 7th year now. I wish I had as much dedication as you when it comes to language learning though!
I bet it’s a good environment to learn Polish. Not a lot of people know English there as I’m told.
@@OrientalPearl not a lot of older people do but otherwise most young people are communicative. Kindergartens these days have English classes at school :)

i've been told that everything in japan was SMALL but i was not expeting things to be really THAT SMALL wow. it must have been a tough 6 months for you. I'd love to study abroad (whether in china or japan i don't know yet) but now i realise that beside studying abroad you also get to LIVE abroad and i don't know if i'm ready for an experience like that yet !
It was supposed to just be 6 months, but I'm still here unable to go back to China because of the coronavirus.
@@OrientalPearl take care ! i know the situation is unexpected but maybe you can turn this into your advantage by travelling a little bit more in Japan ?
Japan is a very small country, so everything is small in size. She's living in the Sharehouse, the rent is very cheap payment.
She has a small room & shared bathroom and Kitchen. U working a big business, u can buy a bigger apartment or house.
If you are studying in Japan,
this apartment ignore for u
because is a cheap rental.
This year is not good for traveling, take care be safe.
No driers.... Does that mean you have to check the weather before you do your laundry? What about winter.?
I mean, I lived without a drier once upon a time....but that was in Phoenix Arizona.
Thank you for sharing, this is very Insightful though ^^
Thanks for checking out our sharehouse.
Your home in the US is beautiful!
Too bad I'm all grown up and on my own now. It's pretty cold in the winter.

Besides your bed work table can u remove it? If you cannot remove that, u can act more wood put on the top on it. U can make a little bit larger size, so u have more space to do your work or study. Ur luggage late down on the floor, u totally waste a lot of your space.
2 luggage the clothes u didn't need to wear on it or other items, u can put on the luggage for storage.
Please put ur luggage stand strict & put in the sidewalls, now u can buy small bookshelves or small unit under ur bed. U can put ur snack or junk food on the shelves, your space will looks larger.
Thanks for the advice
Lol..so funny you crashed your drone on the first day🤣
Yep! And it's funny to me too because I didn't break it. lol
Well, the room in Tokyo is better than a US Navy Ship. For three years on 6 month to 11 month deployments all I had was a bed and a locker in a berthing compartment with 100 other guys. This is temporary, and you have a bright future ahead. Not sure why I saw this video so late! 頑張ってね! その家は大学生ばかり泊まっていますか。 外から普通家を見えるね。
A navy ship would be pretty crowded.
I can't get over the disrespect of not taking your shoes off.
I bet lots of guys from her high school drove by that house and thought to themselves...'that's where she lives -- most beautiful girl in school'. All the ones that were afraid to talk to her. Haha!
Rich family, easy life. I wish I had that.
I totally get the lifestyle change. I currently life in a super small apartment in one of the dorms of my university. It is 15 square meters, the kitchenette is basically just two burners and a sink in the hallway. But at least it has a big window and the bed can be put up to make more room and I live there alone. We share 3 washing machines and one small room to hang clothes between 150 people. At this point I much prefer washing most of my clothes that aren't too dirty in the sink by hand instead of waiting for a free machine and having to clean it first.
But as you said, it is only a temporary solution and not a permanent living situation. Hope you can move out soon and find a nicer place in Shanghai.
And yes I would love to pack my bags and experience a completely new culture. My university is in the neighbouring country of my homecountry so the change isn't too big culturally. But the subtle differences are sometimes even more confusing because I don't expect them. Whereas in a completely different culture I expect things to be different so I'm less shocked about it. I traveled Japan for 3 months in 2015 and worked at small farms. It was one of the most enriching experiences of my life.
I might move a bit farther abroad for some time after finishing my degree. Or maybe do a Master's Degree abroad if I can find one that fits my goals and will accept me.
Good luck with your studies!
That's a big change. It can teach us some good habits though, like not collecting a lot of stuff.
Any update on the shoes? Are you still wearing them around the house or have to finally given in?
I still wear shoes inside. But I also clean the house.
THE COOLEST EVER !!!
Careful with redbul Anming! drink a lot of water after! but man... that's some heartbreaking news about Japan! I use to think houses where magical in that neck of woods! 🤔
Well it's big city living. The houses in the Japanese countryside are much bigger. You get your money's worth away from Tokyo.
Yes you’re so cool!
Thanks for checking out my background story!
That is the nice shared house tour, but where did you hang your laundry in rainy days?
I left my home in Shanghai in 2017 for California, United States for my study, and I found very interesting that I went to your country to study, and you went to my hometown for your study! Well, I think it is great because people from China and the United States can learn from each other.
Rainy days are hard! Basically the clothes can't be dried on rainy days.
I really regret not studying abroad. I have too many commitments to do it now 😭
It’s never too late.
Wow you live the high life xx
Don’t you get claustrophobic? I certainly would. Love your insight to Japanese and Chinese life , please keep on making videos.
it's funny that you said that because I am working on a video about that right now. Living in Japan and living in China
6:50 maybe a business idea: Importing and selling dryers in Japan :) Its strange, they have so many techy gadgets and such a high standard of living but no dryers ...
I thought that was really ironic too! And if you try to buy a dryer here, it's really expensive!
Actually, about 50% of washing machines sold in Japan are washer dryer combos. Also many houses and condos have dehumidifier-installed bathrooms(so the bathroom becomes a dry room).
You could hang up a chain of lights maybe so the room isn’t that dark
That's not a bad idea.
for every new episode i just have so many new questions. i guess i have about 100 questions right now.
Ask away. I've been answering comments at home because I have all the time in the world right now. lol
@@OrientalPearl well first of all, uh, arent you scared to be well basically locked up with completely random men?
Pretty sure that wouldn't fly in the USA for a legal rental. No window it can't be a bedroom. Probably no big deal since you don't mind living in a closet temporarily. Life is an adventure. Invest in house slippers instead of tracking dirt though the share house. 8 people is a lot of dirt. Nice video thumbs up.
It's not legal in Japan either, but somehow we get away with it. lol My roommates saw the video and now they check to make sure I take my shoes off.
@@OrientalPearl You knew that would happen. But i suspect you knew that when you posted it. No shoes in my house but i tend to cheat when in a hurry or forget something. You're amazing btw. I look forward to more of your videos.

Now wait. If you don't go to that shower and you don't have a shower in your room that means that you don't...?? 😱😱 I m very impressed with your language skills

Heeey!! I love your channel. I would love to study abroad, I'm already graduating and when I'm done I wish I could go to Japan or even China. Why did you chose China for studying abroad? Did you go to university before going to study in China? Best greetings from Brazil!! ❤
Actually I would like to see more you speak Chinese and Japanese language video..
There will be more and more and more to come.
1:24 till the end of the video can use a slight audio boost. At least its affordable where you live! Rent where I am is 2000 a month due to strict building and pluming regulations. How I see it, you can always move to a better place once you start earning more but not even having the option to rent cheap and save money is worse. At the end of the day you just need a place to sleep.
Thanks for your tips. I have some audio issues with many of my videos. Viewers like you are helping me to catch the trouble spots. Thank you. That's right, at the end of the day it's just about finding a place to sleep. The main reason I moved here was because my friends live in this house.
@@OrientalPearl I'd take friends over luxury any day :)
Your house in Michigan is huge!....where I live that size house would cost 5 million dollars, at least!
Luckily we live in an area where big houses are cheap compared to most parts of the country.
What an adventurous lifestyle! I don't think I'd have the stomach to decide to move to the other side of the planet to immerse myself in a completely new culture. Did you know the language relatively well before you traveled there in 2016?
I had learned Japanese for one year in China before moving here, but the very first visit to Japan in 2015 was hard. I didn't know anything and kept wanting to speak Chinese to everyone. That didn't work well. I went to a Japanese school for the month long vacation. It was really hard to do full immersion from level 0.
@@OrientalPearl Oh wow! Good for you though! You stuck it out through the rough times and now you're thriving! Makes me want to be more adventurous and take some risks in my own life!
What a contrast! Tight squeeze for 8 people in that share house, but looks like a lot of fun. Any tips for looking for shared accommodations for between 1 - 3 months? (Not AirBnB, hostels, hotels)
It is tight! Luckily a two people moved out since then. Sharehouses are a good short term option. If you are a student here, dormitories are also an option. There are lots of ads online for staying with a host family in Japan too.
Same prices as in Switzerland...
Great videos ! Much love from Europe ; )
Phil Delta Thanks for checking out the video. Still living in this little room now.
Does Lake St. Clair freeze over in the winter? That is, do people play hockey or skate on it in the deep winter?
It freezes over, but it's usually pretty thin ice. I don't think people do much on it.
☑️
I regret never studying abroad. Both my brothers were able to.
It's a great experience! Never too late either.
randomly touches dried bag. LOL
That's right! I have no idea why I did that.
When you say no dryers, you mean in your apt? Or are dryers actually not widely used in Japan? There are so many Japanese branded dryers here in the states.
I mean basically at all. It's that ironic.
@@OrientalPearl wow. I'm learning so much. The land where all the coolest electronic gadgets come from...still hang their clothes to dry.
On rainy days, Japanese people use dryers(washer dryer combos) too, or just hang clothes inside the house or in dehumidifier-installed bathrooms(the bathroom becomes a dry room) though most people seem to prefer to dry their clothes under the sun if not raining. (I wrote a little more about it under ThoseBackPages
"s post.)
👍👍👍👍
That unshaded bulb in your room. Doesn't it bother you? Since you are from the Midwest, is redbull considered as pop?
The unshaded light makes my eyes twitch. lol We just call it an energy drink. Pop is coke, sprite, 7up.
I talked to my Japanese friend all night and they say i must move to japan, bc i am very similar to Japanese culture. I am part native american and i spent many years living in native american culture, even though i look like a typical american white guy. But i am far more humble and considerate of others because of my experience. I have inherited some land here in america, which i want to sell and use this money to travel abroad and make a new life for myself. I see Japan as one of a few places that could be good for me, as a lower class American who suddenly will have upper class money. Could you explain the cost of your life in Japan for me?
The cost of living varries a lot depending on the city you live in. Tokyo is expensive. There are lots of hidden costs to renting an apartment. Food is also expensive here, but health insurance is cheap.
Where do you deposit the organic waste?
How the heck can you fit in that house? Or should I say sardine can?? It's already small with just 1 person nevermind 7 :-( . But I guess for the amount of rent you pay it's good enough. By the way. Awesome house in Michigan and great drone shots :-)
It's rough. I'm ready to move. I thought I would be out of here by now, nope. Thanks, that was my first time playing with the drone.
Japan house is a lot like the illegal rooms around queens ny. Every floor is divided into 4 or 5 rooms. With 3 or 4 floors plus the basement it gets crowded.
It's totally illegal, but we are nice to the neighbors and nobody cares.
@@OrientalPearl they busted a housing inspector in nyc for having just this kind of thing. No problem unless someone gets a new York Post reporter involved

$380 consider very very cheap. I guess it also depend of the location. Is it close to subway/ train station? Is it a safe neighborhood? You are very smart to study Japanese & Chinese all oversea. Chinese is the most useful language to learn. I wish I could do that when I was young. Wish you all the best. :")
It's very close to the station. The reason it's cheap is because so many people are living here together.
NIce vids, but i am not sure if that room size is even legal?
Ha ha, it's probably not. Idk this house has been here forever.
NO Dryers in Tokyo??? Does it get cold there? cant imagine hanging clothes out to dry when its cold out! lol
It sucks to wash clothes in the winter. And it rains a lot.
Or raining! For such a technologically advanced society, it really doesn't make sense. Is it about saving energy?
Dryers do exist in Japan, I have seen them for myself at the hostels I have stayed in. However it is true that most Japanese hang their clothes to dry.
@@briand.1694 the cost of energy is higher in tokyo compared to the U.S especially when you get into higher tiered consumption.
Hmm, it's like one of lies and stereotypes about Japan that many J-vloggers keep telling. Anming seems to be proving some are indeed "lies" but not always...
About 50% of washing machines sold in Japan are washer dryer combos(but still many people seem to prefer to dry their clothes outside if not raining). Also many Japanese houses and decent apartments have dehumidifier-installed bathrooms(so the bathroom becomes a dry rooms). Japanese bathrooms are separated from toilet rooms except in tiny apartments, BTW. I found a website that has done a survey on how Japanese families wash and dry their clothes. That shows, on a rainy day, they either hang clothes inside the house or in a dehumidifier-installed bathroom, or use a dryer.
These are what dehumidifier-installed bathrooms look like: www.google.com/search?q=%E6%B5%B4%E5%AE%A4%E4%B9%BE%E7%87%A5%E6%A9%9F&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi6_MT6gJbuAhWWPXAKHQIfAVsQ_AUoAnoECAcQBA&biw=1368&bih=729
Redbull?!? Ugh. In California, where I'm from, everyone here separates the trash. Most of California. That might be coming to lots of other states too, such as Michigan. BTW, nice intro to Michigan. You should talk more about the US. Is Redbull popular in China or Japan? Personally, everyone I know who drinks it, hates the taste.
Red bull is sold everywhere in Japan and in many places in China. They don't have sugar free Red bull in China, which makes me sad though. We separate trash in Michigan, but it's not mandatory like Japan.

can you make a video how foreigners can get a job in China other than teaching English, particularly in the Finance & Accounting industries? Thanks
Ha ha, I don't know anything about the finance and accounting industries. I will be looking for a job when I return to China. I'll make a video about the job search at that time. Most foreigners working professional jobs in China were sent by companies in their home countries.
Oriental Pearl I’m in a awkward situation, I’m Chinese with a US passport and planning to return to Shanghai after China letting foreign re-enter again
