@@fredriks8976 You got that right. You can play as a kid (as I was) or an old man (as I now am). You can play socially or cut throat competitive - mixed, women or men. Started curling when I joined the team in highschool. It's a terribly boring sport to watch, but it's some of the most fun to play. It's not just about tactics like chess, you have to be able to execute it as well!
@@Biosquid239 It's a tool to measure relative measurements, not absolute distance, the number changes as they tighten or loosen it, and that tool is likely accurate to the micron if it's anything like what is used for bowling lane measurements.
The wobbly stick would have been good enough most of the time. It also shouldn’t have been that wobbly, I haven’t seen that in high level play before. The other thing is that the laser needed to get a tire party involved, the players try to decide amongst themselves before that.
Except for no one really makes a living off of this. Yeah, you can get some pretty decent cash if you win, but a lot (if not all) highly competitive curlers also have jobs outside of the sport.
It's getting better in terms of cash but a long way to go. Sponsorships help but mostly, play is for the love of the game. It's more than a sport - it's a culture.
Me who did NASP Archery for 8 years thinking we had some of the best sportmanship: well this makes archers look like heathens, they were all so polite and joking with each other. Also incredible how they managed to get them the exact distance apart. Never seen curling in my life, but that seems like an incredible play
Biggest problem with that wobbly stick is the sway while measuring(human error), the measuring rod(mechanical error), and the reading instrument gauge on top(instrument error). You have 3 margins for error that are non-mitigating and all 3 always add up. You get a reading that is at least 1/4 off from my experience. The laser should be replacing this for all and its very affordable and accurate by the mm. Usually measurements like this are very rare though and do not happen as often in curling.
Am I the only one that had no clue who was talking 95% of the time? At first I thought it was just commentators, but then I saw everyone was miked. Still, they're Canadians, so it was nice to listen to.
as someone who has never played this sport and hates playing golf, i love watching both because i admire the skill involved in both games, and in curling yes there is a lot of competition between teams but also a lot of sportsmanship and comradery between them so glad i found this on you tube.
Because when it comes to competition people just wanna win. Like you could have a skipping competition in the summer olympics and people would still go hardcore 😂
funnily enough, even with stuff like this in it curling is still more physically active than american NFL football. granted, you can say that about nearly every sport: the team sizes are so big compared to the number of people on the field and there is so much dead time during a game that sitting at home and watching the game is often more calories burned per hour above resting rate than the average player in the stadium because at least the audience will move to drink beer and yell at the tv. a lot of the other high visibility sports end up like that too (though none to nearly the same degree as the NFL) 70-80% of the players are assigned to sitting on a bench resting, 10% are warming up to switch in, and 10-20 are actually playing, combine that with a game schedule that assumes the entire team is on the field and even an iconic lazy-man's game like golf beats out half the major sports leagues even when the sport itself is something like basketball which is pretty much nothing but switching between running, obstacle running, and sprinting. also "funnily enough" most E-sports are fairly near the top of that chart because almost none of the leagues allow boated team sizes and even in the ones that do teams don't usually use it, couple that with a lot of the games being WAY more demanding to play at a high level than you would ever expect and the only things that beat them out are stuff like endurance runners or Water Polo...or driving a racecar, they exaggerate most of what they post because somehow sports news never figured out that it'd be way more interesting and impressive _not_ to lie about everything but most forms of vehicle racing are absolutely brutal on anyone in the vehicle and very much a real work day for the pit crews and whatnot.
I was having fun with the giant measurement stick until someone brought that LASER AND CALLED IT A TIE! The fact that someone built a laser thing just for this is amazing!
Of course chess players are more angry. The most aggressive thing you can do during a game if hitting the clock with moderate intensity. In curling you can burn your arms with the broom.

Howard Baxter, A tie (which results in a blank end), is actually only the objective of the team with the hammer (Red in this scenario). I’m curling, the team that scores shoots first in the following end. The hammer is very useful in curling because you could have an end where you are about to let the opposition score 8, but make the perfect shot to deny all those points and take 1. Scoring without the hammer is such a big deal, we call it stealing. There are 3 scenarios: Yellow steals 1. Best case for Yellow as stated in the example above. (This result would be considered a bad end for Red.) A blank end. Best case for Red as they maintain the hammer. (This result would of been considered bad for Yellow) Red scores 1. The middle ground, Red gets a point, but Yellow takes the hammer. This is usually the result Yellow wants as it is worth it to give up a point in order to get the hammer.

@@fredriks8976 You got that right. You can play as a kid (as I was) or an old man (as I now am). You can play socially or cut throat competitive - mixed, women or men. The game that Gushue, Jacobs and many others all over the world have mastered resembles the game that I thought I was pretty good at (I did play at the provincial and even national level) but everything is better now. Accurate description of curling.

The laser proved the first tool to be accurate too, a guy eye balling a gauge was just as accurate as the laser. Love it.
Wasn't an eyeballing, that was practiced.
it had a gauge on it
It also wasnt "just as accurate", the guy gave a different answer each pass through lol
@@Biosquid239 yeah the wobbly stick is useless

I like how they messed around with the wobbly stick for what seemed like forever, when they could have just grabbed the laser from the beginning.
The wobbly stick is fun to use
The wobbly stick would have been good enough most of the time. It also shouldn’t have been that wobbly, I haven’t seen that in high level play before.
The other thing is that the laser needed to get a tire party involved, the players try to decide amongst themselves before that.

It's the most played sport in Canada. They can't all be pros.

Another archer, high five!
Sticks and stones may breaks my bones, but they make great games as well!
It's rarely necessary for rocks this close to the center point. The wobble isn't present when the rocks are 4 or 8 feet away.

I was really on the edge of my curling seat over this clip. The action, the suspense. Fast paced sports at its best.
funnily enough, even with stuff like this in it curling is still more physically active than american NFL football.
granted, you can say that about nearly every sport: the team sizes are so big compared to the number of people on the field and there is so much dead time during a game that sitting at home and watching the game is often more calories burned per hour above resting rate than the average player in the stadium because at least the audience will move to drink beer and yell at the tv. a lot of the other high visibility sports end up like that too (though none to nearly the same degree as the NFL) 70-80% of the players are assigned to sitting on a bench resting, 10% are warming up to switch in, and 10-20 are actually playing, combine that with a game schedule that assumes the entire team is on the field and even an iconic lazy-man's game like golf beats out half the major sports leagues even when the sport itself is something like basketball which is pretty much nothing but switching between running, obstacle running, and sprinting.
also "funnily enough" most E-sports are fairly near the top of that chart because almost none of the leagues allow boated team sizes and even in the ones that do teams don't usually use it, couple that with a lot of the games being WAY more demanding to play at a high level than you would ever expect and the only things that beat them out are stuff like endurance runners or Water Polo...or driving a racecar, they exaggerate most of what they post because somehow sports news never figured out that it'd be way more interesting and impressive _not_ to lie about everything but most forms of vehicle racing are absolutely brutal on anyone in the vehicle and very much a real work day for the pit crews and whatnot.
The fact everyone is so chill with each other make me want to play

Greetings from 🇧🇷. No ice, no curling here.😅
Canadians were to polite to say I won lol
both teams must agree, otherwise it goes to official decision or the end is blank
Wyatt Roncin and both teams were willing to concede a tie.
There are 3 scenarios:
Yellow steals 1. Best case for Yellow as stated in the example above. (This result would be considered a bad end for Red.)
A blank end. Best case for Red as they maintain the hammer. (This result would of been considered bad for Yellow)
Red scores 1. The middle ground, Red gets a point, but Yellow takes the hammer. This is usually the result Yellow wants as it is worth it to give up a point in order to get the hammer.
Too
