      It's honestly fun. I went curling during a field trip years ago when I was in like grade 6. I was used to standing on the ice since I've been playing hockey my whole life & at that point it was about 5 years of hockey. I enjoyed playing curling that one day heavily. Was very fun & I honestly suggest trying it. It's a little boring to watch but it's very fun to play

    I saw a story about the stones. The rock that the curling stones are made from is on an isolated island and there is only one company that makes the stones and only a handful of people work there. It really is a unique /odd sport . You know the sport had to begin with kids sliding rocks out on a frozen pond.

      This is sort-of true. For olympic games they use "Ailsa Craig Blue Hone granite" from Scotland, made by Kays Scotland, and this is indeed unique. But there are places such as a mine in Wales that can also supply granite for stones.

      It's a holdover from club play, where there are usually no officials at all. However, it is still the players who make the decision whether a measurement is needed.

      Lasers? How more accurate do you want?

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 6 років тому +37

      Lasers can be more accurate. Obviously these weren't accurate enough. A true tie in this game is literally a physical impossibility. It is only possible if the measuring tools fail.
      I think the source of major inaccuracy is the banged up edges of the stones. That makes tight measurements difficult.

    • @furiousmat
      @furiousmat 6 років тому +57

      @Richard Smith
      Well there's plenty of sources of inaccuracy in there. Like the fact that they're using a hand-adjusted laser to measure something with round edges..? Let alone the banged edges.
      If you have no practical way to measure a difference then it's a tie.
      That's like.. I remember perhaps a decade ago during an F1 qualifs 3 cars qualified with the exact same timing to the millisecond. I mean sure they certainly all, physically, had different times, but already a millisecond is a pretty ridiculous accuracy for something with as much variability as a full lap. One bit of wind at some point in the attempt would skew the result by more than that. So at some point the inaccuracy falls way beyond any competitor's skills and even if you could determine a finer measurement, it'd come down to luck. So if the stone is as closed to the micrometer, let's just agree it's actually a tie.

    Biggest problem with that wobbly stick is the sway while measuring(human error), the measuring rod(mechanical error), and the reading instrument gauge on top(instrument error). You have 3 margins for error that are non-mitigating and all 3 always add up. You get a reading that is at least 1/4 off from my experience. The laser should be replacing this for all and its very affordable and accurate by the mm. Usually measurements like this are very rare though and do not happen as often in curling.

      funnily enough, even with stuff like this in it curling is still more physically active than american NFL football.
      granted, you can say that about nearly every sport: the team sizes are so big compared to the number of people on the field and there is so much dead time during a game that sitting at home and watching the game is often more calories burned per hour above resting rate than the average player in the stadium because at least the audience will move to drink beer and yell at the tv. a lot of the other high visibility sports end up like that too (though none to nearly the same degree as the NFL) 70-80% of the players are assigned to sitting on a bench resting, 10% are warming up to switch in, and 10-20 are actually playing, combine that with a game schedule that assumes the entire team is on the field and even an iconic lazy-man's game like golf beats out half the major sports leagues even when the sport itself is something like basketball which is pretty much nothing but switching between running, obstacle running, and sprinting.
      also "funnily enough" most E-sports are fairly near the top of that chart because almost none of the leagues allow boated team sizes and even in the ones that do teams don't usually use it, couple that with a lot of the games being WAY more demanding to play at a high level than you would ever expect and the only things that beat them out are stuff like endurance runners or Water Polo...or driving a racecar, they exaggerate most of what they post because somehow sports news never figured out that it'd be way more interesting and impressive _not_ to lie about everything but most forms of vehicle racing are absolutely brutal on anyone in the vehicle and very much a real work day for the pit crews and whatnot.

    • @RamatiKat
      @RamatiKat 6 років тому +1

      Howard Baxter, A tie (which results in a blank end), is actually only the objective of the team with the hammer (Red in this scenario). I’m curling, the team that scores shoots first in the following end. The hammer is very useful in curling because you could have an end where you are about to let the opposition score 8, but make the perfect shot to deny all those points and take 1. Scoring without the hammer is such a big deal, we call it stealing.
      There are 3 scenarios:
      Yellow steals 1. Best case for Yellow as stated in the example above. (This result would be considered a bad end for Red.)
      A blank end. Best case for Red as they maintain the hammer. (This result would of been considered bad for Yellow)
      Red scores 1. The middle ground, Red gets a point, but Yellow takes the hammer. This is usually the result Yellow wants as it is worth it to give up a point in order to get the hammer.
