- In this episode of Anatomy of An Artwork, explore the impeccable design of Thomas Germain’s Silver Tureen, to be offered in Sotheby’s STYLE: Furniture, Silver, Ceramics Auction. From its carefully modeled crayfish to its meticulously sculpted hoofed feet, this work exemplifies why Germain is widely considered to be the greatest silversmith of 18th century Europe. Few important 18th century silver pieces survived the tumult of the French Revolution and this this extraordinary piece is one of the last major examples of Germain’s work in private hands.

So intricate. The artist and silversmith are underestimated.
An amazing work of art rarely seen these days.
This should be in a museum
Remarkable, most exquisite.
Perfection................seamless perfection.
ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT...
Pretty impressive.
Beautiful! Gorgeous!
That’s truly magnificent
The Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon has a great collection of Germain's silverworks. They were commissioned by the nobility.
I was like , Holy cow those crayfish must have taken forever. But they were cast from the real deal, still an impressive work, and I don't blame him a bit to take any shortcut that probably did better than any human could. to do that kind of stuff back in the day must have required genius.
Microwave Campbells' Chicken & Stars soup.
Dump into exquisite antique silver tureen.
Serve with grilled cheese sandwich.
Enjoy.
No really, that is an incredibly wrought example of artisan silver.
Brilliant!!
