My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.
Links below to Amazon are affiliate links - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)
FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over four years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off UA-cam? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
Thanks for watching!
I wake up, make a cup of coffee and then I check on you! Congratulations you are part of my morning routine because I like to start off with your positive and great attitude my friend!!!😄
yes! Same here. I used to watch at night to get a Paris fix....now....I can't wait that long. I find myself mentally invested in what's going on with Jay on a daily basis. And when he doesn't post for awhile...I worry. :) such a likeable/loveable guy!
Thanks to both of you! Hopefully no worries now - taking some time has been good. I think I underestimated how much the last month took out of me. Back asap =D
I'm glad you like the lights. They've done wonders for mine.
I feel like they've already had an impact. Thanks Mark!
Wow the plant light is sooo cool!
I think they plants really like it! I leave it on when I head out for a few hours.
That is the cutest, tiny ice cream cone. Perfect sweet refresher!
I have a sun clock too. It woke me this morning in time to see a beautiful sunrise.
Oooo, day trips. I'm on board for that.
Cheers! 😎
Rising with the sun is a nice way to start the day =)
Wow, nice grow light gift!! 💡Way to go Mark! 👍🏼
Love it!
Thanks for being honest / real. We are all going to deal with this year in our own unique ways. It is good that you are going yourself healthy "space".
Looking forward to the 80/8 again. I was really learning alot from it before you had to put it on hiatus! :).
You're welcome Danyel, thanks for being so kind. And me too! Looking forward to getting back out and exploring
I’ve never seen those lights before. What a brilliant idea! Look after yourself Jay!
Gotta keep the plants happy and fes
*fed 😆
👍🏻😁 great light ! Cool gift 👍🏻
Agreed!
I loved the 80 in 8 and I’m excited that you will continue. Honestly, that is my favorite part of your blogs as it helps me to learn more about Paris. Hoping to visit in the fall!!!
Enjoyed the coffee asmr intro ☕️ (also you may need to do an entire video on Jess’ wardrobe lol) 👗👠👜
The skirt and hat the other day were the bees knees
Seems like she's become the ultimate trendsetter 😎
Love the shadows on your shirt as the sun comes up. Poetry by nature. Hang in there, Jay!
Thanks Audrey =)
Wow!! I like those lights to make your plants grow!!!
Yeah! Looking forward to seeing the results =D
Great insight as always. Love how you love your plants.. Take care and be well ❤
If you're looking for day trips, I'd recommend a visit to Chartres! It's super easy to get there from Paris, and it's a lovely place to explore.
(And thanks for your videos. I've been missing France terribly and watching these gives me a brief but wonderful glimpse of a place I love.)
My pleasure, Julia =)
Those Utah truffles are amazing!
So good
La série 80/80 est de retour ! Le bonheur est revenu dans ce monde !
🎉🎉
Thank you for brightening and lighting up my life from where I am Happy Summer
I'm lucky I get to!
@@JaySwanson you bet! you are! : )
@@JaySwanson you are spreading hope Jay and thats a good thing : )
Yes to day trips. Take it easy Jay and sending good vibes ✌🏽
Thanks Jordan!
Nice to see you smile Jay. I love how solution oriented you are, you never seem to dawdle. You inspire me. And I can't wait for the 80 in 8 to come back!
Thanks! I'm learning as I go =)
Hi Jay, you are a 100% person. Take time for yourself. As much as we love your coffee fuelled conversation focus on what gives you calmness and joy. Remember to do deep breathing. Been through this burnout stuff myself. Slowing down helps you to do more with less ie getting to the same place in a bit more time but enjoying the voyage.
There are so many fantasric places outside Paris but i think my favorite day trip is Laon an ancient city up on a hill overlooking the landscape with a five tower gothic cathedral that dramatically reaches for the sky. This cathedral is the motherload and completly unique with cow sculpters high up in the towers and the rest of the town is very interesting indeed.
Sounds great!
🧡💜 we're here for ya buddy💜🧡
Thanks Dixie =D
Hahaha! A super fun video! And you got something you really can use...and something fun to eat! Plus..an outing with friends and ice cream! I would’ve also gone for the lime, like Phillip. Life can be good! Thank you for sharing some of the somber and sad parts, as well as the light and joyous parts. Life’s stream washes over us with much of both waters, the deeply sad, and the deeply joyous....and everything in between. Being capable of acknowledging them, and processing them into growth experiences, at our core, is what forges our spirit into it’s ever-expanding beauty.....(well..that sounds pretty good...and, I’ve decided to believe it’s true, lol!)😏 (p.s. the beauty of your “creation”, I.e., your social media presentations...is that, in the process of your sharing, you have gathered around you, many who resonate with you, and wish you all the best. We may not be able to heal all wounds, but we care and support what we understand of your process, and if sending “good vibes” does any good...I’ve no doubt you are receiving oceans of good will!)🌊❤️🌞
Lime was definitely the way to go. And thank you! Just learning to take time when I need to has been an ongoing lesson in itself =)
HAVE A GREAT DAY!
You too!
Another wonderful vlog, Jay! I've been feeling blue and seeing your vlog has definitely helped.
Thanks Sharon! I'm glad it's helped - hope you're feeling a bit lighter today =)
@@JaySwanson You replying makes today better already! Thanks Jay!
Utah truffles are the bomb!
So good!
Out "shined" by the grow lights!!! ;) You're welcome for the chocolates! ;)
I had one later and it's SO GOOD! Just ran out of filming juice. Thank you!!
The coffee-making ritual is as Important as enjoying the resultant elixir.
Your comment about burnout is so right on! It feels so much like you need to keep moving but then you can’t. It’s an enormous challenge that’s actually hard to convey to others, especially if those others are A-type personalities. Others may not be able to relate, but it’s not for others to get. It’s for you to figure out what works for you. Good luck! What a cool grow light! I may have to invest in one. Would you share the brand?
Gotta take life at a healthy pace as best we can =) As for the grow light, I totally would but there's no branding on them or the instruction manual and I already threw out the box! So strange - but he got it off amazon.fr so you should be able to find something similar there 🌱🌱☀🌱🌱
@@JaySwanson ok. Thanks!
Is Utah famous for truffles, asks Jay...in PARIS. Mdr :)
I'd never have guessed =)
Parasocial relationships are fascinating. It's one thing when it happens with fictional characters that we all know don't really exist, but it's another entirely with vloggers like yourself. I mean, we refer to you as "Uncle Jay" to our little boy when we settle in to watch your vlogs. "Uncle Jay's on" kind of thing, and he knows exactly who you are when we say it.
Totally - it seems perfectly normal in today's world, and I don't think it's necessarily unhealthy. I have them myself. I think it's being mindful that that's what they are - forgetting the divide and imagining it's been closed when it hasn't is where things might get tricky/unhealthy. I've gotta see if I can find some research on it. Uncle Jay out ;D
It’s all about sleep
Definitely getting back into that rhythm =)
I hope you go the natural history museum
Hey, I would like to purchase your Guide for my summer trip to Paris. Are the updates complete?
Almost! Had to find over a hundred missing photos and make some replacements haha. We'll get the new version up ASAP - I'll make a video all about it. Thanks for asking! =D
@@JaySwanson amazeballs !!! Thanks Jay.
Why switch from chemex to press?
The aeropress is easier and more economical for one person - but I still chemex for two when I have a guest.
@@JaySwanson Huh, I may follow suit! Merci'
Taking candy from strangers
Adults should be equipped to handle loss and change, the problem is finding real adults in modern societies.
Gotta prep ourselves as we go as best we can I suppose
Your intro segment reminds me of the intro to the tv series Dexter. Is that a coincidence? :)
Yo mate! Why not a bean to cup coffee machine?!
Just not my style =)
Hiya Jay. About receiving packages at Peleton... Was going to send you something... I went to my local post office today and was informed by them AND an independent shipping company that France doesn't allow incoming packages with snack food (or any food) in it! I tried to be sneaky and pretend I was sending a shirt, but then they said that the packages will be x-rayed and any attempt to send food to France would be thwarted. Oh dear. Would you know if that's a recent update to the laws of the land? Have you had any success lately with receiving food/care packages? =(
Morning Jay good chat good vid can i ask when u went states and bought running shoes im looking at brookes trainors
I got a pair of Hokas and a pair of ON - alternating so they each have a chance to 'rest' and hopefully last a bit longer =)
@@JaySwanson taa very much
applesauce breakfast is...........not good :) time to go shopping. :)
First! Are we doing this now?
There are a few who have been doing it for YEARS 🥇😎👍
@@JaySwanson alright, if it's a fight they want, it's a fight they'll get. 🥊
