Imam Adeyinka Mendes was blessed to embrace Islam at the age of 17 after a trip to Jerusalem over 30 years ago. He is the Founding Director of Marhama, an organization focused on building holistic, spiritual, peaceful, indigenous, and joyous American Muslim communities dedicated to sacred service and justice for all. He has studied Arabic, Islamic Sciences, meditation, and peacebuilding with Muslim scholars from around the world.

Ethiopia, one of the oldest countries in Africa, has a rich Islamic history dating back over 1400 years. Even before the holy city of Medina, the message of Islam had reached Ethiopia. Fleeing persecution in Mecca, the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) first migrated to Ethiopia, then known as Abyssinia or the land of the Habasha people. Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), the first muezzin in Islam and a distinguished companion, had Ethiopian origins. The city of Harar in Ethiopia was a center of Islamic culture and learning in the Horn region, playing a vital role in the spread and preservation of Islam in Africa.

Ethiopia didn't exist, The whole region was Abasinia. The Muslim tribes who accepted Islam at that time were the same ones who built the Islamic sultanate of Ifat and Adal. Bilal ibn Rabah (RA) never had "Ethiopian origins". Bilal (RA) wasn't even Habashi (Ethiopian/Abyssinian) to begin with. The belief that Bilal (RA) was a Habashi (Abyssinian) is nothing more than a fallacy. He was an Arab. The Arabian society followed a patriarchal society where lineage and origin was attached to the patrinieal side. Furthermore, even Islam obligates that we follow our father's lineage (only). Bilal ibn Rabah (RA) was an Arab by default because his father was. He (Bilal) was not a Habashi.

Yes. The East Africans were the first to defend The Muslims right to their religious freedom. Therefore it was in East Africa that the Muslims first had “Religious Freedom.” Barakah aka Umm Ayman(ra) the Prophet’s Mother after his Mother Amina, was also East African (Abyssinian). Sumayyah bint Khabbat/Khayyat(ra) the first Martyr in Al-Islam was also East African, as well as Bilal ibn Rabah alHabasha, the first Mu’adhin and Treasurer appointed by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) himself. This is just to name a few. So East Africans played very important roles from the very beginning of the Prophet’s mission. As-Salaam Alaikum!!

Islam isn't like Christianity and all muslims are brothers and sisters as ummah one body. As well as the rest of the black Companions such as the king Najashi (Negus), Um Aymen, Wahshi who sadly killed Hamza, but made it up and killed Mussaylima the liar, who claimed Prophethood, and all the way to the least known Companions. May Allah almighty be pleased with them all, ameen

I learned a lot in this video even tho I am born African Muslim. Islam is all we know for most of Africa since its birth. Christianity is much new and came with missionaries other than Egypt and Ethiopia . Africans were praying in mosques before meccans were still fighting the prophet
With all due respect to the honourable Sheikh mentioning the great Black Sahaba (The Messenger's companions), even non-Sahaba people! however he failed to speak about our mother Sawda bin Zum'aa, the Messenger of Allah's wife!
The Mother of believers Sawda, which is her real name literally mean (The Black woman) in Arabic, is our honourable mother, the Messenger of Allah married Sawda (may Allah be pleased with her) in Madina, a year after the Hijrah from Mecca, she was a divorced old woman with no one to take care of her, she was gentle and wise with the best Character, the Messenger of Allah honoured her and got married to her, and her house was next to the Messenger's Masjid along side the the rest of the Messenger's wives.
She should be the 1st person to speak out, and number 1 on this topic list, as not many people know about her, may Allah be pleased with her and the rest of the mothers of believers.

The famous black Sahabi that I like was the 17 yrs Muslim commander Usmah bin Zaid. He was given the title whilst all the senior Arabs were around by the Prophet saw

Usama bin Zaid(ra) was the son of Zaid and Barakah aka Umm Ayman(ra) hum the Prophet referred to as his “Mother after his Mother(Amina)” . And Barakah was Abyssinian as well. She was the one consistent person in his life from the cradle to the grave. As Salaam Alaikum!!

One of the ingenious ways Islam has addressed slavery is tied to its core dogma in what it is called “Neck Freeing” “عتق رقبه".
Islam specifically targeted slavery in a strategic way with the long term end goal in mind.
Islamically speaking, no one is infallible or impeccable except the Prophets, we are ALL prone to wrongdoings. For this reason, a major sin’s atonement is expunged by “Freeing Neck” or in other words setting one free. Therefore since “WE” as humans sin, and therefore we must atone to our sins by freeing necks, and then there will come time where there will be no one to free and everyone is free and that is the Islamic end game for abolishing Slavery and how it dealt with societal disease at that time.
And in the case, one happened to own slaves at that time, Islam mandated ways in how to treat them with dignity and respect as part of your family until they are freed. Of course, not all would follow them but there are rules for those who transgress too.
In regards to colorism in Islam, I would suggest referring to the Final Farewell Sermon of the Prophet PBUH, excerpt:
“All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly.“
Finally, Slavery was not tied to a specific color as anyone can be enslaved whether black, white, Arab, non Arab, old, young, man or a woman for many reasons such as wars, raids, capture of a person traveling or far away from his people or tribe, poverty and so many other reasons.

Unfortunately sister you've been indoctrinated with the false belief and narrative that Bilal ibn Rabah's (RA) very dark complexion was a rarety in Arabia. The complexion of Bilal (RA) was not uncommon in Arabia and you'll actually find that historically it was something that a lot of Arabs possessed. Moreover, you'll find that the original Arabs were a very dark and black-skinned people. This notion of the "black" complexion and so called "black" people being looked down upon in Arabia is nothing more than a indoctrinated fallacy. In fact, you'll find that the majority of the slaves in Arabia were what we would call "white" people.

Don’t make ignorant assumptions. You haven’t met most Muslim arabs. Mauritania, Egypt, Morocco, Saudi, Iraq, Palestine and more have had mad many pious and Islamically knowledgeable people come from these regions. Don’t generalize.

As Salaam Alaakum. Habasha refers to all of that place, they call Africa.
If Prophet Muhammad uncles and cousins were BLACK! What color was Prophet Muhammad?
It's difficult for me to respect someone who knows that Prophet Muhammad's 9 uncles, father, and 1st cousin Ali were shadeed al-udma (very black) but fail to say that Rasoolullah was described as asmar al-lawn (medium brown) or in between abyad al-amhaq (albino white) and adam (very black) according to Timidhi.
Also as mentioned in multiple Arabic texts from the classical tradition, the Arabs judge purity by the darkness of their skin and scholars, Arab and non-Arab from the classical era place the Arabs in the Black race.
Lastly, many sciences clearly place the original Arabs in the Black race: linguistic, archeological, genetic, etc. We absolutely know that the Arabs have mixed over the centuries and many non-Blacks (former Romans, Iberians, Turks) have Arabized like the Levant, Shams, and North African Arabs.
Black Muslims need to stop tip-toeing about Rasoolullah being Black. We need to stop saying "Black" people around The Messenger when he was Black, as were the original Arabs and the Arabs of The Messenger's time were still predominantly Black.
We know miscegenation had been occurring long before Islam in Arabia, mostly in vassal border tribes: Ghassanids (Byzantine vassals) and Lakhmids (Sassanian vassals).
This mixing explains the colorism. The recent war with Axum explains the ethnocentrism.
The fact that the Sahih Sita represents textualization from the oral tradition of hadeeth and that the textualization was done generations later by non-Arab outsiders (only Tirmidhi of the Sahih Sita was partially Arab) explains the racism, contradictions, and confusion in Hadeeth.

Forgive me if this sounds weird. Does it matter what color the shahabah is. We are no different brothers. Colors doesn't matter. Even if the messenger is blue, Islam is still islam. Asstaufrillah, guys, I don't understand why color is an issue.

As Salaam Alaikum to the Gambians. I have married into The Gambia. My youngest son’s Mother is Gambian and in a couple of years we intend to take him to The Gambia and put him into a Hafiz program there. One of his uncles recently completed a Hafiz program and another still have another year or more to go to complete the Qur’an. In Shaa ALLAH he too will become Hafiz of the Qur’an. I have a quick question here about the use of the word "Black". What do you really mean when you say that word; does it mean Black Skin or does it mean Black culture. Also, does the entity of people with "Black" skin know they're "Black"? I will like us to have an understanding, in-depth for that matter on these issues please.

It’s a lot of jahiliyah in this ummah other races rejecting black brothers when they come for marriage. The racism is deep in our ummah; the discussions are needed as too many think Islam is an Arab religion.
