Today we are reviewing another watch I wanted ever since it came out in 2015. The Rose Gold Emperor Tuna, reference: SBDX014
The top of the Tuna lineup, powered by a Grand Seiko derived 8L35 movement, large and loud, the Tuna is probably the most unique looking diver on the market with only the Omega PloProf being in the same "crazy" league.
I've owned 4 tunas in total so far, the Solar Tuna, the 300m SBBN015, the Darth Tuna, and now finally this one.
Each one was a step bigger than the previous, and I started off with the smallest due to my smallish wrist at 6,7", but with each one I bought, I realized I can pull off a bigger one, finally getting to this one!

In early 2000 I completed my first offshore season and bought a Sub. That was followed by an Emperor, Sinn, Ecozilla, Frogman et etc. Eventually about 13 years ago I bought a DW5600 and filled it with silicone oil. Now I keep the fancy one's for Show, and the DW for Go. The Tuna/Emperor is massively underrated.
This watch makes me mad. It does because it shows that Seiko could give a damn and make a watch with properly along hands that hat the hour directly when the minute is at 12. Perfectly along chapter rings. And about all else, a perfectly aligned bezel insert. Instead they are the greatest watch company with the greatest history and design…. And I got an hour hand 3 degrees into the new hour when the hand is at 12 and a bezel I cannot get aligned. 😢
U can get a watchmaker to align the hour/minute/second hands at the midnight mark at the date changeover. Most watchmakers though don’t set them exactly though- check out virtually all the watch repair channels here on UA-cam. They tend to set them 15-20 seconds off. I feel your pain though- it bugs my ocd as well
@@Ces1um this isn’t the point. It shouldn’t be on the consumer to be responsible to fix Seiko’s mistakes. We as a community have to stop putting the blame or grief on the consumer from other consumers about blatant issues. Instead, we need to all focus that energy on manufacturers to do better. They need to be held accountable for raising prices, but not raising quality.
@@JadeGeminiM390 a fair enough comment. I suppose there are only really three courses of action that I can see. Before purchasing the watch, get the store to show you several copies of the watch you want and pick the one that is the best. If you already have bought the watch then send it in for repair under warranty. That way it hits them in their pocketbook- they may be more apt to get it right the first time. The final option I can see is tell the store you would have bought it but it has these flaws. The seiko dealer may then put pressure back on seiko itself stating the issue they have selling their watches- or they may starting culling through the watches they receive for sale and sending back the duds. Just thought of another- call them out on social media- go to their UA-cam channel and complain- hit their facebook and twitter (x- stupid name) accounts maybe. If this is more than you’re willing to do, then buy a different brand. Lots of great watches out there. You don’t have to reward a company by purchasing their products.

What I wouldn't give for Seiko to COSC regulate or certify their high end movements. I get that there is no love lost between Seiko and the Swiss but their parameters for daily timekeeping are always feel like a gut punch unless we're talking the real high end GS pieces, and of course spring drive.

Great great watch/model serie, I have the SBDB013 tuna and love it.
Looks like we have similar taste in watches. I own this Emperor, the 124060 Sub and the Sapphire Speedy that right now is in service due to a defect.
I was thinking about selling the Emperor.. But he is too much of a fun watch and one of the last truly awesome offerings from Seiko that hast the perfect blend of modern and retro.

I want one. But only if they put their solar mvmt in it. I'm a big fan of the solar mvmts in protreks and frankly I've grown to prefer it over autos. A new gasket and battery every 15-20 years. How can you go wrong?

I bought the SBBN029, after having owned then sold my SBBN017. I like mechanical watches have a few in my collection. The SBDX model are in my line of sight, though not yet purchased one as of yet. This model is making me reconsider that decision. On a side note - I’ve bought several g shocks based on your videos, it’s another rabbit hole that’s been & still is an adventure since my GWG 1000. Thank you kindly for the detailed content you provide for us.
Haha yes, G-Shocks have a habit of multiplying fast, better stop with the first one that ticks all your wants, as soon you'll go vintage and then there is no end 😂.
I've owned the SBBN015 and the 029, and they are all great, but the bug of getting this kept creeping up until I finally got this, and now I must say it has cured my Tuna addiction

curious if youd prefer applied indices, or does it make it seem more of a "tool" this way?
I prefer it like this as there is nothing that can fall off, and trust me I've seen loose and fallen markers over the years 😂
I thougth Seiko stamped/embossed all dials for their toolwatches, so the markers for all the dive watches can't come loose.
They even do this for the alpinist line.
The SBBN031 i've got uses a similar dial to this one, but the outer section is slightly raised so the lume "cups" can be a little deeper without being raised above the surface of the dial. It's little things you don't really notice at first, but they do work well.
How comes that (kinda) affordable watches are so much more beutiful then ugly Patek or Rolex?
