Dad and I did this in about 1975. I am 75, Dad died in 95. We built a hydraulic press from a piece of bridge girder, channel, drilled and tapped a jack base, and used a 2 way selector valve to hook it to the pneumatic hydraulic pump off our Weatherhead hydraulic hose machine. We changed MANY axle bearings with that old girl. I wish I still had it. We did not need a lathe to drill the base, either. Dad sold his store AND GOT SCREWED BY THE NEW OWNER, a shyster named Steve Wuerst who went bankrupt and cost my Dad lots of money. I am convinced he helped shorted my father's life.
kinda redundant it was already a hydraulic cylinder. You just eliminated the self contained pump and holding valve. if you wanted external power it would be easier to just modify the pump section
Now that I've read all the comments, I realize that obviously no one - again - no one has read the video description. It describes exactly the purpose for which this conversion was made... He also demonstrated it in the video... But reading, seeing and understanding is probably too much to ask for some people. They prefer to write stupid comments.
You're quite right. Stupid comments are easier than reading and understanding. 🤣. Almost everyone didn't comment ( didn't understand?) that this is now a cylinder THAT will also work when mounted upside down or horizontally unlike the bottle jack. True it's single acting and you would have to replace the pneumatic connector with a hydraulic one if you want to use it at higher pressures, but that is not what this video is about.
Ok so… If you can afford to buy a lathe. You can CERTAINLY afford a $25 Chinese hydraulic cylinder. And then it would be double acting. These videos are getting completely out of hand…
They are NOT getting out of hand... There are simply people who make a living with these videos and invent all sorts of stupid things for LOOKY people like us who also watch a scapa crushing shit... You can now see these jacks in all sorts of ways 🤣🤣 🤣
Not sure why you even reinstall the outer jacket it’s only there to hold the oil when it was a jack, also it’s a very low pressure cylinder with the fitting and hose you have on it.
How long is the plastic fitting going to last before it explodes under pressure, bloody sure I wouldn’t trust that setup, but interesting vid all the same 👍🏻
Showing a "hydraulic" cylinder tested with a low pressure air supply, which is normally around 120 psi. Common hydraulic systems can often run at 3000 psi. Maybe show it operated with more than that to add in a safety factor. Saying that, I have no idea what's the maximum pressure these hydraulic jacks can run at. Otherwise enjoyed watching the video, just for fun.
Because the outer cylinder Was merely a reservoir for the jack to draw oil from and return to, He sealed off any connections to that part and only left one port that connects to the inner piston which runs inside the pipe you saw during disassembly
Interesting to see how things are made and how we can use them in many ways. Yeah, maybe you can buy a Chinese hydraulic cylinder for super cheap, but do you really understand how everything is designed? Well, I found this video interesting and gets my creative instincts in gear. Thanks for making this video.

Very impressive. You turned a bottle jack into a bottle jack without a base. So what would you use this for, definitely NOT lifting a car anymore.

I was thinking the same thing 🤣🤣🤡
My heart is bleeding while observing how you operate with teflon tape...
This guy can stop that bleeding heart with a roll of Teflon tape😂😂😂😂😂😂
Not too long ago I was wondering how hard this would be to do. Great work!

Not exactly. He turned a hydraulic jack into a pneumatic cylinder.

@@lucarambaldi2731 Thank you for giving the definition of out of hand…
Maybe he's just a person that likes making stuff.
@@brandoncrimmins6296 BUT PLEASE IMAGINE DEAR SIR
The lathe is nice to have but not needed at all.
What is this good for ?
I like these videos where you repurpose something you don't need into something you do. Cool.
if i replace the release valve with a mnual pump cover the return hole im gonna have a cilinder without soldering enything?
Not sure why you even reinstall the outer jacket it’s only there to hold the oil when it was a jack, also it’s a very low pressure cylinder with the fitting and hose you have on it.
I will sub some of your other vids look cool
Before turn the base why didn't you cut off the major caseing save lot of turning and not so much vibration when turning
Ya but shorter view hours.....
How long is the plastic fitting going to last before it explodes under pressure, bloody sure I wouldn’t trust that setup, but interesting vid all the same 👍🏻
He said hydraulic, in fact its pneumatic
Paint certainly fixes an excentric circle.
WAAAAIIITTTT! you said you were making a HYDRAULIC cylinder, you made a pneumatic cylinder.
really nice work, impressive!
Thanks a lot 🙏❤️
What about the hole in the Bottom?

How do you make it go down?
Gravity and a lot of spare time, or he modifies the misus 's vacuum cleaner and valves in vacuum to extract the air
How much will it lift now ?
um, it's already a hydraulic cylinder
Cool thing tho
Why doesn’t that old rubber plug in the side where you used to put hydraulic oil blow out under air pressure?
Because the outer cylinder Was merely a reservoir for the jack to draw oil from and return to, He sealed off any connections to that part and only left one port that connects to the inner piston which runs inside the pipe you saw during disassembly
Cool 👍
Thanks 🌹
Just buy one, they are made to do the job, this thing could kill someone.🇦🇺

Very good 👍

It would have been easier and quicker to build a ram from scratch
👍
Yes but not as much fun, some things are satisfying to make yourself.
I’d just order one from Northern.
That is the biggest interrupted cut that I've ever seen on a metal lathe. Why?
nice and interesting👌👏

A hydraulic jack IS a hydraulic cylinder *ALREADY*

You just BROKE a good working jack.
Powered by air = *Pneumatic* =/= hydraulic
If you have no other way to make such a cylinder and it's the right stroke length.
You mansged to save the valve ball!
👍
❤❤❤❤
ONE CAN USE FOR SHORT RANGE CANISTER SHOT.
Never leave the chuck key in a lathe...even when off!
Det var veldig elegant🎉❤

Not hydraulic but pneumatic.
Si tienes ese torno, es mejor hacer un cilindro

Most of the comments I receive from Russia always contain at least one rude word
Eso es como hacer un billete de 50 euros, borrando un cero al de 500 euros
Pneumatic, not hydraulic.
I.M.I.A.P
Why
To much tape
😅😅😅😅😅😅
I don’t think you put enough pipe tape on your connector, you might need another roll of it. Useless.
This is stupid and pointless.
