When I sold my M2C, I actually considered an e46 M3 before I bought a GR86 instead. I think for me I wanted to move back to lightweight and having a new car with warranty was the determining factor. However I definitely want to own one of these one day. E46 M3 might be my all time favorite BMW.
I have both e46 and S2K. The breadth of ability of the e46 is incredible and as a result it sees more miles than the S2K. It’s comfortable/practical, rewarding to drive at the limit, yet still analog enough to be fun when driving normally around town. rare to find all 3 in one car.
If you do end up getting one, go for the ZCP (Competition Package). Came with a better more communicative steering rack. Or if you can't find one you can always swap the base rack for a ZCP rack or rack from ZHP E46. Suspension, 18x9.5 or 18x10 lightweight wheels, and some sticky 265/35/18 tires and you're golden. Thing will be a hoot to drive every time.
E46 M3, S2K, MR2, S-Chassis, IS300, Miata, 350z, RX8.. i think these are the cars you’re considering.. I mentioned before the e92 328i, as long as ur willing to switch out a mechanical lsd it’s a solid option once tuned
Hey it looks like you didn't have the sport button pressed, or maybe you did I couldn't tell with the sunlight. That makes the throttle sensitive to the point where it's like an on and off switch. It makes the normal throttle mode so lazy and slow to react in comparison that I have a sport mode memory option in my tune where if you leave it on and turn the car off, it stays on when you get back in the next day.
I agree with this comment. The car feels completely different with the sport button on. I also have HTE software that has memory and keeps that function on. Makes a huge difference.
The sport button was nothing but a marketing gimmick. I tracked my E46 M3 for many many years. Neither me nor anyone else I came in contact with who had an E46 M3 drove with the sport mode on. It took all of the nuance and control out of the throttle, which is obviously essential to driving at the limit.
Even the non m e46 is amazing It’s kinda crazy that a 330i today still is a great car to buy it’s quick and light enough to throw around on back roads. It’s also comfortable and has an ok speaker system I find it hard to buy a new car when my e46 feels more like a car than majority of the new stuff today.
The stock shifter is not good. I had no preconceived notions about it when I bought my car, and it just stuck out to me like sore thumb every time I drove it. There were a few times where I even had a lot of trouble downshifting 3-2 at critical moments, and that's when I did the research to find autosolutions. Tremendous upgrade, probably the #1 mod everyone should do for these cars IMO

same thing with me but I sold my M340i to daily my GR86 and track it on the weekends
s54 is like 100hp than a gr and way more raw might and day. 330ci is really similar hp and more on the gr level

I would take a clean e46 m3 coupe in a heartbeat over a ZN8 GR86
