There are three official languages. English, Tok Pisin, and Hiri Motu. Throughout the country English and Tok Pisin are spoken. Tok Pisin was created for the purpose of being a trade, making both reasonably easy to understand for speakers of both languages, with the grammar of Tok Pisin being highly learnable for nationals. Tok Pisin also borrows elements from other languages, both Germanic and other Papua New Guinean languages, serving as the perfect middle ground for speakers of the 800+ languages in PNG. Because of constantly being under control of some European (yes this includes Australia. In other words, western) countries, many also speak English, especially in urban areas such as Port Moresby. In this case, the writer chose to write it in English, and that was perfectly acceptable considering the official languages in the country.

(Edit) they do not celebrate independence. They said that the mainland isn’t the best place because of the rascals, but they want to go back to Milne Bay.
