This was also the first game I almost did 100%. The problem was that I was missing one 'secret star' and after like 30 more hours i just gave up. I lost the game at one point and never found out which star I didn't find

oh my god I was stuck at 149 stars for years as a kid I could never figure out where the last star was and even as I got older I would check all the secrets and see where I missed a star, today I found out the star I was missing was at 9:50 I have finally complete Mario 64 ds after nearly 20 years
I am missing one secret star too. No idea where it is. I have been looking at all secret stars walkthroughs and every time I basically conclude that I have all of them, but somewhere hides a star. When I die I will turn into a ghost with the shape of 9 year old me wanting to find the last star to rest in piece.
The only star I was unable to get was the one behind the secret door in the character room with Mario, Luigi etc. I could never find the sparkling bunny to get the key. Did you find that bunny and get that star?
@@JakeB-Real I did & I did that because I believed my cousin who told me to do that in order to fight a king rabbit with a rocket launcher to unlock Waluigi. I had a feeling it was a bit off but I did it and got the star instead.

The extra content in this version of the game is actually really cool, it's the best thing about this remake. That, and the 3D models looks much nicer than the N64 version in spite of it running on weaker hardware. Not the mention all of the mini games, I spent hours wasting the day away with all that bonus content. This game controls like ass though in comparison to the original N64 version. I would love a definitive version that adds proper 360 degree movement with mechanics matching the N64 version of the game like the wall kicks and momentum.
If you have a modded 3DS, you can use a cheat code to unlock 360 degree movement with the circle pad that takes into account how far you're pushing it. That's how I've been playing 64DS
I feel like this was only hard for Simply *because* he has a million hours in SM64. I 100%ed SM64 at age 8 and 100%ed this game at age 13 and I don't remember having any issue with the controls or anything. Although to be fair, he isn't playing with Yoshi much and I always thought Yoshi was OP in SM64DS.
Examples like diving mid-air and centering the camera behind in the Bowser courses really shows there. I had a harder time going through the original game.
There’s actually more tech you can do while playing as fat Mario. If you wanna see it all, look up “Mario inflation” and you’ll get the wiki page for it

Nah I got more than that; rn I'm currently at 120 stars and I can get more than that, counting all the castle secret stars and 8th stars when you get 100 coins in a level (probably 122 is the absolute most you can get with just mario and yoshi)... I got 134 stars with mario, yoshi and luigi.

@@notvalk5475 if you're serious, that's beyond extreme In my top played games I have 1000, 400 and 300 hours respectively, but there is a twist. #1 and #3 have map editor support and official integration, that is Geometry Dash and Portal 2, with the first one having *huge* focus on custom maps (gauntlets, map packs, daily levels). In Geometry Dash, I beat over 1.500 star rated levels during all that time. Yeah, I almost 100%-ed update 2.1 And #2 is Minecraft which is self-explanatory. Mario 64 is a good game, way better than GD, but... 4000 hours? Really?

I grew up play the DS version and I thought it took me so long to get used to the movement. Action Replay had a cheat code the was labeled "Waring Gigantic mode use at your own risk." It made mario so big all you saw was his legs. And yes in the DS version L is real.
I used to play this game in my first ds back in 2008 and i remember it wasn't difficult at all, i played it to chill most of the times lol, btw i think he skipped the big and small goomba map, it was one of my fav lmao and if i remember correctly it had an exta boss fight
Playing the Luigi minigames is addicting to me. Especially the one where I have to get a pair, three of a kind, etc. I can’t remember how much money I gotten but after a couple of trial and error, I managed to somewhat figure out how to make it work.
It was so freaking hard to adjust to m64 controls since I started off on the DS version lol It was hard to not hold y while moving in sm64 and the wall jumps were trippy since you couldn’t slide down the wall and jump whenever

I wonder if Simply knows that this game was meant to be played without a control stick. This came out on DS, well before 3DS and it's little circle, so it was either Dpad or with the stylus. Simply playing with a controller that has an analog stick makes it way easier.

I don't understand why SM64 DS changes the camera. On n64, not having smooth-cam was kind of dumb, but on DS it would've made so much more sense since it would standardize the angles the D-Pad lacks.
A dpad can only give 8 different inputs. That's really rough for a 3D platformer, especially if you're used to having analog input. Using a dpad would definitely have given him more control over the precise inputs, but just having 8 inputs is still terrible. I played the game as a kid, and also more recently on the Wii U emulator. I still think the DS version is overlooked, but the control scheme really makes the game unfun to play. As I kid I didn't notice at all but after playing other 3D platformers it's obvious how much the DS controls limits it.
Someone in chat was complaining that this game has less pixels than the N64 version, my brother it was on the Nintendo DS. For reference the DS has hardware that is slightly better than a GBA so yeah no shit
When you’ve logged god knows how many hours into the original and develop that muscle memory, the DS version will feel terrible because the physics aren’t quite the same.
