It's a cool trailer but it's a single purpose tool. At least with a utility trailer with a log Arch if you're not hauling log you still have a utility trailer
You got me in the first 5 seconds seeing i wouldn't have to drag so many logs, just lift and support. But i have a lot of hills and bumpy roads, have you had issues with the rails shifting or is there a locking mechanism somewhere that holds them in place?
Ive been thinking along these lines too. I cant believe how everyone thinks those trailers with the big swinging arm is the way to go. Im thinking of converting my tandem axle car hauler into a similar design.
Great idea, I like it! I noticed in comments that you are using a swinging arch type trailer now. Why did you switch? What are the pros and cons? Thanks, great video!
Great trailer; did you build it or is one like it available to buy? If so , where can I buy one? Thanks, I just found your channel and I think it's a incredible resource of information!!
That was a homemade trailer although there are commercially available units out there for hauling tanks. I don’t have it any longer, I switched to a swinging log arch style. Kinda like Matt Cremona’s old trailer.
@@SlabGuy If this one was so amazing why'd you switch trailers? I'm not asking to be sarcastic at all. Just doing my research to try to figure out the best set up for our situation. With all your experience hauling all kinds of logs you know the pros and cons of just about every sort of rig like this I imagine! Thanks so much for your time and response.
@@carolewarner101 If I had to guess: this trailer limits you to one log, but the other style allows you to transport multiple logs at a time beside each other.
I like the set up but another axle should be used for that kind of weight. Installing v type rails on bottom would keep the centre of gravity lower but i can see how it works. You from a LPG background? Don't worry about the negative types putting a opinion over on possible improvements is what you asked for, good job.
Not really. It does spring inward slightly but the way the cross member saddles over the tube, it sits down flat either on its own or when I set the log down on it.
this is what i call uncommon sense , and its a great skill or intuition to have and its easy to pick up , or understand just open your eyes and see what reality actually is . now there are people with so called ( common sense ) and that might be a whole nother story , so for now lets just keep it real .
He has a follow on video where shows the weak spot where the frame is damaged halfway between the wheels and the hitch. It’s a great idea but needs more structural support and wheels.
Nice trailer. I'm not sure if I would consider that "no special equipment" though. Handling logs like that takes special equipment no matter how you slice that pie. I would recommend moving the winch up to the overhead beam and getting a wireless switch. It would eliminate the cable in the way on the front of the trailer and halve the force on the beam (roughly). Otherwise great idea and inspiration!
Great idea converting an propane tank hauler into a log transport. I'd seriously get another axle under there as the tank transports are only meant to carry fairly light (by comparison) empty tanks for placement at the site. You made me a little nervous stepping inside of that rig to adjust the chain. That there is gambling with your life.
@@eddiejames1847 , I was hoping to save myself the trouble , lol , I was hoping to just buy one instead of building one but I'm almost done already ... Video to come soon of the build and the first run with it , made a few changes but still looks about the same ,. Thanks for the reply

Honestly I picked up much larger logs than this one with this trailer. It was a very capable setup.

I've been around wood for awhile and nowadays people pay big money for trees like that so I don't cut them up I get them to haul them but seeing this video I'm inspired to make my own ...great video except for putting yourself in a potential dangerous situation...two thumbs up for originality...
1) How do you secure it, in particular, in the event of a frontal collision, what prevents it from travelling forward.? 2) What type of braking system do you have on the trailer, if any? 3)What type of brakes does it have, if any? I like the concept of it, it obviously works well.
Awesome, thanks for the demo. Have you considered welding some sort of guard for your winch? I was nervous when I saw that log slide forwards real fast when you picked up the back end...
I love this idea. I just can’t see how that single axle trailer is able to hold that load. I had a double axle that I loaded up with around 3500 lbs of logs and it bent up and popped all my tires lol. Love this though.
I think he is using 6 lug implement hubs and implement tires. They build these hubs in a 10k rating, and that is for each hub. I dont know how heavy a rating you can get with the tires. I am not saying for sure thats what they are but the 10k hubs are out there. The implement hubs and tires are for a low speed application.
That is a good idea, but I don't think putting yourself under a suspended load moving those cross braces in place is a very safe idea. I wouldn't trust that kind of cable. I have seen mine snap on a few occasions and there's no warning.
Dear Second Life: Perhaps you have Nine Lives and have a few to throw around, unfortunately most of us only have one and a fragile one at that. Your rig is very cool however watching you step inside the perimeter of the trailer frame to adjust the sling chain position made me wince. Had that log shifted at that moment you would have been pinned and sustained severe crush injuries which could have impacted you for the rest of your life; or worse. Hold your life and health a little more dear. As well the possibility of mechanical failure would again make me want to be very cautious around this or any heavy lift machine. Manually deployed outriggers would as well give you significant improvement of stability. Good luck! Great rig! Love the ingenuity and thanks for sharing.
I mainly do urban log retrieval so almost all of the logs are either in a driveway or right next to where the tree stood. With this style, as long as I can get a chain under it, I can pick it up.
@@SlabGuy I've been researching log arches for modifying a trailer to do exactly this. I really like your trailer. The only down side that I can see is with smaller logs it will carry less but it also cary one really large one much easier than loading with an arch. Availability plays a factor and if I could find something like you have i would probably jump on it. Otherwise I'll probably have to go with a flat bed and arch. Good work.
No way would l ever tow that on a public road. Good for on a farm, with some more thought to make it more safer to use, as l can pick so many deficiencies into the lack of safety aspects. Good luck with it. The basic concept is good, but lacking in safety, big time.
I like the idea but at 3.50 mark on your video is the reason I think I'll pass on this design messing around under suspended loads is a huge no no for me maybe a reaching tool to hook into your cross member so you don't have to risk your life to a weld not snapping or a chain or hook failure winch malfunction sudden blown tire causing load to shift something like that doesn't even have to fall to seriously mess you up please be careful and come up with a solution to more safely load your logs
Super cool trailer for really heavy large logs! THANKS for sharing
That is the best video for homemade trailer that I've ever seen,!!! Great job
2:11 you could loop a chain over the end so it holds down the lighter end and forces the heavy end up. That way you don’t have to readjust.
jim here, I do a lot of this and your trailer is great. GOD BLESS
Nice concept, huge work, little effort with your equipment
Excellent!
This is awesome, way less steel than I thought was required
I'm only 24 seconds into this video and I already know I have to have one. Jeez that's awesome.

A lot of factors involved. Nice discussion below. Safety first. Elegant design.

Once everything is strapped down, the logs are secured to the rails and the trailer frame quite well. I never had an issue with the rails sliding.
I'm building one! Thanks! Good job.

We use a old propane trailer works great
does the trailer have springs ,if not how does it handle with that load. love the design
So simple. Love it!
If the log slides forward, the winch will take the impact. A simple rail guard here would be beneficial.
do you have issues with the back of the trailer coming inward were the cross support won't fit?
Not really. It does spring inward slightly but the way the cross member saddles over the tube, it sits down flat either on its own or when I set the log down on it.
how long does the battery last?
Work smarter than harder. Nicely done.
Nice design. Just was wondering about the no axle part, and what would the trailer axle/hub be rated. Or trailer weight capacity? Thanks
What is the width/height/length of your trailer? I'm looking up the specs for legal limits now because I'm going to build one of those! Great job.
I don’t remember the exact measurements, I think I covered them in a comparison video I did.
Man i sure could use one of them, may have to build one very soon

Nope, it was an existing trailer. Used to move propane tanks.

Chain snaps and does your arms putting in the cross supports..I would make them on a pivot and swing in from the side
