I was assigned to the first AF unit to receive the F4C at MacDill in 1963? I had been working on the 100 series aircraft radios for 4 years and the transition was difficult as all the electronics were totally different. To make things worse the AF slapped a suffix on our AFSC and froze us to that unit when I was in the process of trying to get reassigned back to Japan. I beat the system with the help of a Tech Sargent (friend of a friend) who worked in lower grade assignments. When I got orders dropping the suffix, I knew I was headed back to my Huns. Strange, when you think about the difference between them and the F4s.

I know, right? So many times you'll see footage of a really nice model squirrel its way down the "runway" and pop into the air like a kid on his bedroom floor with a Corgi toy. Then they maneuver in unrealistic ways and bounce onto the ground. This was immersive.

I was a weapons Specialist on the F4-E in 1968 at Eglin AFB, Fla. The E model was the first and only F4 that had a 20mm Gatling gun mounted in the nose! Six thousand rounds a minute but only carried around 300. This was due to weight restrictions and melting too many gun barrels if fired too long. It was a precursor to the A10 30mm set up. What a fantastic aircraft which could still be flying today! Great model and flight skills. Thanks for the fond memories

I’ve been to Eglin AFB many times for flight testing but with the F-15 brand new plane from the factory from STL. I also used to fire the 20mm gun on the F-15 at the factory in STL though we only fired the gun every other block of A/C so not that often, they don’t fire the gun now days the Air Force does that when they receive the

Might've ran across my Dad in Eglin around the same time. Between Eglin and Tyndall, we lived in Panama City from '63 - '70. He worked in electronic warfare development when "electronic" was a brand new word still struggling to gain recognition as different from "electric". They mostly used a F100d as their testbed, but at various times played with VooDoo's, Zipper's, Thud's, and Phantoms, too. Stay Safe!

Roomer has it they can shoot any U.S missile that the U.S has exported and has the same radar as early F15's with lookdown shoot down capabilty something that the U.S air force phantoms never had.

Until they have been at sea for a few weeks. When flying off a carrier they get covered with soot from other aircraft maneuvering on the flight deck, then get rained on and black streaks everywhere and that's not even counting the hydraulic leaks. F4 was a hydraulic fluid sprinkler. The RC plane would be more realistic if owner could make black smoke from the engines.

I served in Vietnam from March 1969 to May 1969 as an infantry grunt in I Corp out of Danang. In mid March at noon we spotted a group of probably VC humping rations and ammo from the coastal rivers to the mountains up a deep valley. We called in an artillery strike initially and followed that up with an aerial strike which turned out to be to F4s. The aircraft unloaded several 1,000 lb bombs and followed that up with napalm and several gun runs . We sent a patrol into the valley to do a damage assessment. All they found were body parts. Bad day for the VC.

We flew the RF-4B (Reconnaissance) F-4 with deployments predominantly in the Western Pacific (Asia). Although we were transitioning to the F-18 and relocating most of El Toro to Miramar (Fighter Town, aka "Top Gun") in 1993 following congressional decision to close El Toro and decommission the F-4 it remains my favorite aircraft and is truly one of the greatest to fly. @@1tonyboat My introduction to the F4 Phantoms was in December 1966 when we'd just moved to Niceville, FL (dad was in USAF and was in his final years of service before retirement) and we happened to live right where military aircraft flew low overhead preparing to land at Eglin AFB which was a few miles away. These F4's (along with many other USAF aircrafts) would pass overhead very low literally every few minutes apart daily. The Phantoms immediately stood out due to it's unusual design of the wings and rear stabilizers and, of course, the noise of those twin engines. For me, from that time until November 1969 (when we had to move again) it was like having our own airshow daily 24/7. Really miss living there.

Nice work on the scale model and nice work flying that F-4. Kudos.
