  • A cab ride aboard a Plasser & Theurer 08 tamper from Barnham Up Sidings to Havant. The journey takes us along the west coastway via Chichester, Fishbourne and Emsworth.
    Apologies about the raindrops on the camera for the first 2 minutes. There had just been a deluge and I didn't notice the drops right in front of the camera initially

    Brilliant. Thanks for that. Travelled that line ( Chichester to Fareham) every day for 4 years in the early 80's on the VEP and EPB units. Always been a very under used line. Great weather you had.

    My old stomping ground. Can't tell you how many hours I've spent standing on Barnham station waiting for trains to Bognor, Gatwick, Victoria, Brighton, Chichester, Portsmouth, and beyond. In fact, back in Southern Railway days, an ancestor used to work the signal box at Shopwyke level crossing. Thanks for a very interesting and informative trip down the line.

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  2 роки тому

      Wow! I bet that box has been gone a fair number of years - I have zero recollection of that one!

      @@emmo999 I thought to check it out after reading your comment. It was more correctly called 'Drayton' or 'West Drayton' at various times and had some control over the sidings that served the pits etc. It was removed in 1986 (!)

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  2 роки тому

      Until 2021, the shunt crossover and signals for the remains of the yard at Drayton were all still there (controlled from Chichester). At some point in 2021, they were all removed and the track plain lined

    Well, that is about the most "straight shot" journey I've seen from you and your tamper. I had to consult a map only a couple of times to follow it. Enjoyable as usual. Happy New Year from Wisconsin!

      There’s not a lot to the line - it literally heads east west along the south coast. Happy new year from across the pond

    Another amazing video and interesting route with so many level crossings and interesting shunts 👍

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  2 роки тому +1

      There are two settings on the signals, fast or slow. If the signaller has a stopping passenger train, the crossings are on slow and every crossing is protected by a red signal. Fast trains get greens (hopefully!)

    Many thanks for that trip! Brought back some memories for me! I was looking out for the old (unused) Havant Electrical Control Room near the substation on the junction but it seems to have been demolished. Fortunately Woking ECR (where I worked) has been preserved…the Art Deco style inner control panel room has to be seen to be believed! Thanks again…I hope they’ve re-profiled your tamper’s ‘flat’ tyre for you by now. Regards, Rob. In Bournemouth.

      Fascinating to hear about all these old ECRs. This line is either Brighton (the Sussex bit) or Eastleigh (Wessex)

    Excellent video as ever. Audio sponsored by wheel flats are us. Do you wear ear defenders whilst driving or is the cab soundproofing ok? Asking as I wear ear defenders when travelling in the Wickham trolley over here on the Isle of Wight.

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  2 роки тому

      No ear defenders, else you might miss AWS or DVD alarms that need responding. So yes, the rattles are always there, but you switch them off after a while

    4:30 - The line diverging to the right...? Does that mean our track carries on to the right of the junction, and the Bognor branch to the left? Maybe I'm being thick but I think you mean diverging to the left

    I'm sure this will be a silly question for those in the field, but what are those things in the middle of the railway at 9:35? They look like pieces of rail; are they there for upcoming work on the line? I've seen that many times in cab ride videos, and have been wondering for a while. :-)

    • @emmo999

      Yes, the long lengths of rail have been placed there ready for a track renewal

    A railway vehicle that looks ATROCIOUS, who designed this JUNK?, by the looks of it, it was designed by kindergarten kids. National Rail rollingstock designs were great for their steam-engines, but with the introduction of diesel locomotives railway vehicle design deteriorated to a ZERO rating. But the London Underground has always been at the forefront of great train designs.

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  2 роки тому +1

      It’s not even a locomotive. So before you come here with your ill-informed opinions, perhaps you ought to know your facts about what it is you’re commenting on. Then, perhaps, somebody might actually listen to the crap you spout. But I doubt it.
