- A cab ride aboard a Plasser & Theurer 09 type tamper from Staines to Woking Up Yard, via Virginia Water.
This concludes the journey that was started in the previous two videos from Ashford International to Wandsworth Road, and Wandsworth Road to Staines
This series of videos has been very enjoyable; and it was good to take the Byfleet Curve on this section of the journey.

This additional video is mega! These machines seem just the ticket for cab ride recording, and the routes taken are fantastic to go along. Well edited and so many thanks for doing them. The more, the merrier!
The beauty of riding on a machine is that it isn’t constant stop start at stations

Trainspotting at Weybridge and, during school term time, 7 years of travelling between Virginia Water and Egham.
Lots of changes over the years. Rusham crossing, between Egham and Virginia Water, was mechanically operated so had its own little signal box. Where the (relatively new) footbridge and lifts 'sits' on Platforms 2 and 3 at Virginia Water is just about where the signal box used to be. There used to be a chord between the two lines at Virginia Water which, in my time, only seemed to be used one week a year for Royal Ascot 'specials.'

60mph, so not too bad. These machines keep up with most trains, as any lack of speed is made up by not having to stop at stations

Nice video again. I particularly liked the overcast sky and the rain spots, as i was watching in temperatures of 33 C. Those tampers really crack on for speed, up to 60 mph I believe. I bet you don't usually hold up normal commuter traffic, probably the other way round!

☺️ great series! I'm curious though, at 10:13 there's a white circular sign with a black triangle...there's another one shortly after. I've seen these before but have always wondered what they mean?
Thanks for the nice comments. I’ve seen these too, but am not entirely sure. I think they are turn back markers for passenger trains. So they know when their back end is clear, to change ends and shunt back into a station

I think there are two in close proximity because they are for different length trains, ie 5 car or 10 car

It was a fair old journey, but 4 hours or so is comparatively a short shift, so not too sad!
A ( very tiny ) part of the ( withdrawn ) Anglia trains passenger service [ Norwich to Basingstoke ] , apart from the Woking goods yard , of course ! .... the Addlestone turn off was almost never used for passenger services until the 1990's , but the " Crosslink " service ( as above ) was VERY slow , but fun to ride .... another great unusual trip video ! ! ..........
Ah yes I’d forgotten about that Anglia service! The Byfleet-Addlestone chord is regularly used by freight workings avoiding the main line. And also a regular weekend diversion route for passenger trains at weekends when engineering works are taking place

I've only ever seen them on the Southeast and Liverpool 3rd Rail systems not on overhead lines... Been bugging me for a while so I thought I'd ask...
They are everywhere (although less than there was). Their official name is an impedance bond, but are colloquially known as spiders or track circuits. They are part of the equipment that shows a signaller where trains are on the railway
I say there’s less than there was, because slowly track circuits are being replaced by axle counters, which also lets the signaller know where trains are, but works in a different means

Awesome. Although someone else recently posted a video of the same bit of track, this is the only one I've seen that goes all the way into Woking Down Yard, so that's very helpful. Thanks! Do you regularly drive any other SWR routes during daylight hours? Oh, and the reverse direction would be interesting too. :)

@@emmo999 Of course, I didn't expect you to have a choice. I just wondered if you had a regular "patch" of routes that you sign (like passenger or freight drivers).
I was wondering who chooses the route you take for these kind of movements. Also, how much advance notice of the route details do you get as a driver? And if a change is necessary mid-trip do they call you on the radio or phone? Thanks again for sharing this long trip. Cheers from Wisconsin!
It’s a combination of Network Rail planners and the company control office who work out the route, depending on driver route knowledge, any restrictions along the journey or where there are available paths
If a change is necessary mid trip (very rare but sometimes necessary) it’s all done through the radio to the signaller or control office

Compared with Slovenia,.. this is obysmal. (cheap ) diesel track, rattling all over the place and you pay a fortune! Yes even Slovenia!!!! ( and i'am Dutch)...
It’s not diesel track, it’s electrified. The rattles are from the in cab fire extinguisher. And it’s not a passenger train…
Anything else you wish to complain unnecessarily about?
