  • Whistler is often hailed as the mecca of Mountain Biking. Home to the
worlds best trails, biggest jumps and craziest MTB competition of them all. Crankworx.

Huge thanks also to Mojo Suspension and the team who made Martyn Rides Whistler happen!
But despite being a World Champion Mountain Biker, before his life
changing accident Martyn never got the opportunity to visit Whistler.
So with some help from his friends and a lot of planning Martyn's
dream has been made a reality. He's off to Whistler.
Last time we made a video with Martyn we pretended that he took part in an international Mountain Bike Race at Fort William. But this time we headed to Crankworx where Martyn raced in one of the biggest Mountain Bike Races of all time for real, the Crankworx Air DH.
Getting Martyn to Canada, on a specially modified bike that he could
race on was a huge accomplishment. It's an accomplishment that the
whole GMBN team are super proud of and we hope you love this video as much as we loved filming it!

Do UA-cam have an award for video of the year? Because if they do, I want to nominate this one. I so get what Blake meant when he said it was like his child going out there into the World on his own. I have 4 kids and although they're a hell of a lot younger than you Martyn (sorry dude, they just are) I still felt some of what Blake was talking about. I really wanted you to take care out there and get down the trail safely.
Enormous respect to you for doing this, mostly to you Martin of course but also to the back up team for being there for you. Seeing Blake run back to stop you when you ran off the course was really heart warming.
It was scary enough seeing you going down that escalator backwards in a wheelchair but down Whistler? Wow. I can't imagine how much harder it must be with your centre of gravity so high compared to someone who can stand on the pedals for the tricky stuff. Words can't describe how amazing that was.
Damn you guys, you've made me more emotional than any video here has ever done. I still love you all though.

I remembered meeting Martyn Ashton at the Animal BMX jam held at VivoCity in Singapore, in the year 2007. He was one of two guys (the other dude was Cowan who was riding for Kona back then) to put on an amazing show for the spectators (Martyn held the record for world’s highest side bunnyhop back then). Fast forward till today, this video made me smile and tear up tears of joy, the friends Martyn have by his side to support him through the setbacks and obstacles (literally and figuratively), the fighting spirit, passion and camaraderie he still have when it comes to riding, the touching message close to the end of this video all made me realise that the biking community is unlike any other community anyone has seen. Thank you, GMBN, for showing all of us the proof of unity all in one video.

When Blake goes to catch you after the ditch you can just see that you guys are more than that, you guys are family. Yeah they helped you but it wasn't helping you more than just being there with you and you could see that on all their face. They were there with you not to just help. Amazing rcae to see.

Nobody gets to be called an "Athlete" on their own. Everyone has help. From childhood parents shuttle us around, provide food and shelter. Friends push us to be better, support us during highs and lows. Support teams take care of details. Fans provide motivation. I think this video is fantastic to show not only Martyn's great accomplishment to race again, but his support team behind the scenes. Every racer out there that day has some level of support. Martyn's accomplishment is no less than anyone else. Great teamwork, guys!

I suffered a spinal injury 11 years ago. I was unable to move my legs and immediately began thinking about adaptive sports. I knew what kind of bike i would need, but knew I’d never be able to afford it. It would have been like his. I am very fortunate as over the years I made strides in recovery. I can’t run, or pedal uphill. But I can use a pedal assist. Mountain biking again has been amazing. I know exactly what he feels like. Strangely, the part of this video that impacted me the most was watching his support group and thinking of how helpful my friends have been through my challenges. Good people who get stoked helping others get stoked are worth their weight in gold. Thank you for producing this.

Martyn, not sure how many of these comments you read, but must be said, you’ve no idea the level of respect I have for you.
You’re a MASSIVE inspiration to me as I’m sure you are to many.
Was so happy to watch you back on a bike nailing whistler!
This video made me cry like the girl I am really supposed to be!
11 days after your accident I had my own bike wreck.
My injuries had nowhere near as catastrophic consequences as yours (grade3 concussion, whiplash, snapped collar &grade5 AC seperation) and yet my outlook wasn’t half as positive!
Your mental strength is phenomenal, as you continued to immerse yourself in gmbn and the industry, I found It was to emotionally painful and had to banish mtb from my world for almost 7years. Couldn’t watch even watch a mtb video without feeling severely angry or becoming tearful.
With inspiration from yourself, a second surgery and help from physio for nerve damage in my dominant arm/hand I’ve hit my first trail again yesterday!
You are blinding and I’m so thankful I stumbled across your videos, I feel really alive once more...
And if you ever need a buddy for your random tandem😉 I’ll be your legs if you’ll be my arms🤣

    Just wow!
As an ex serviceman that has had to deal with significant knee injuries and multiple reconstructions I am not a stranger to having that drive to do what you want to do. Surgeon told me I would never run again, I said I disagree and did an Ironman triathlon in under 10hrs. Later on PTSD set in and just getting out of bed and facing the day was sometimes too much but my therapy is my bike. Seeing this video adds a whole lot of perspective to what a challenge is, mine don't seem to be such a big deal now.
Martyn has just personified everything I have always believed, life is doing what you want to do and the question is if you want it enough. I have to admit that track would scare the pants off me but to do what Martyn has done is just monumental, you are the man!
Also Blake, Doddy and the others, you guys are legends. That is a legend group of friends right there.

Martyn, you never fail to inspire me. I'm sitting here with knots in my stomach about a race just over a week away. It's not the competition, it's not my skill that has me worried. It's my health. Last year I found myself fighting for my life with a blood disorder that robbed me of over half of my lung function. I've worked so hard to recover, and it's much better but nowhere near 100%. This will be my first race in a very long time, and my first true, measured effort since I was in the hospital last year. On one hand I know I can tell myself that placing doesn't matter (and it really doesn't), but I'm afraid to find out that despite my hard work the best I have still won't get me to the end of the course. This video has me a lot more motivated and optimistic. Thanks for being awesome :-)

Martyn, I am about 3 years late. But, you're right! It is about friends and camaraderie! Honestly, I don't know what it is like to be a paraplegic, but, when I broke my fibula from a mountain biking accident. I was bed ridden for 4-5 months and I also have epilepsy. You just don't know when at night a seizure will come. I have very few friends that really proved themselves and stepped up to care for me. They gave their time when one family member took care of me. Honestly, after my recovery, I felt like giving up and much more. Those friends have blessed me with pushing through and keep enjoying that is to come. So, to this day, I continue to mountain bike and I have new mountain bike friends. Something, like that only comes from true love for the sport and sincere care for the person behind the bike. I pray you enjoy more biking throughout your life! Grace to you and peace, Tony!

I hope that everyone who becomes unable to do their "sport" due to disability issues will see this inspirational video and find their personal way to "adapt and overcome" so they can experience tears of joy when they are once again able to do the sport they love.

I remember seeing you from way back in the day, but after many years away from mountain biking I've only just found out about your accident after recently rediscovering my passion for the sport. I have a disabled partner so know how difficult things can be at times, but seeing your sheer grit, determination and refusal to let your disability prevent you from doing what you love has served to fuel my own passion for mountain biking. You sir are a great ambassador for the sport and the disabled community. I doff my hat to you.

You got me there Martyn ! What an inspirational guy. I lost one mate to suicide after becoming wheelchair bound, and another lost two legs but moving forward, you can't manipulate someone's mindset or self drive (both results from Harley accidents) But it's guys like you that show belief and courage that inspire others to go on, good on you. This is a great story not only of your achievements but mateship at its best. Blake,Doddy and all the crew are the best mates you could ask for, love those guys. You said you couldn't do it on your own, so what, "your doing it" and that's what matters. Great work guys. Troy from Australia
