Welcome back. Hope all is well. Continued progress on miter saw dust collection design will eventually end up with manufacturers jumping on the bandwagon. Good to see great minds like you and Shop Nation in the mix. Evolution, not revolution. Thx.
The original DW780 DeWalt dust chute was an absolute joke. The Rousseau hood worked to catch a lot sawdust for my vacuum, but I still had a LOT of airborne dust. Then I purchased a dust chute from Travis at Shop Nation which was a large improvement over the so called DeWalt dust chute, but still had lots of airborne dust. Then I purchased your dust collection throat plate and now collect the remaining dust from the blade area. I honestly think that with my Bosch Dust Extractor, Shop Nation dust chute and Inspire Woodcraft dust collection throat plate that the dust problem is over to the point that I don’t have to wear a respirator. I’m very thankful to you and Travis for taking care of such a dangerous breathing hazard…..saw dust. SUPER EASY to install. Thank you Jodee for taking the time to research and develop a throat plate dust collector that plays very well with Travis’ dust chute design!!!!
Great idea! I think one of my favorite things about the internet is people collaborating to make something or to help give ideas to improve it. This gives me some ideas on how to help improve dust collection on a different brand miter saw.
thank you to all the users like yourself who are doing this work. It’s unbelievable and embarrassing that dewalt, makita, bosch, etc have not done this work themselves.
THAT looks like a winner~! I've been watching Travis @ ShopNation for years and his dust collection efforts appear to be doing really well. I have an old DeWalt DW705 that I've used for years, but I'm next week I'll pick up the Bosch Axial-glide CMS that I ordered. I'll be keeping an eye on your progress as well. 😉
Welcome back to UA-cam Jodi. Missed you and was worried about you as well. Since we chatted on instagram, I understand and now see what you’ve been dedicating your time to. Well worth it and congratulations. Also giving shout outs to the other two guys working on dust collection ideas. That’s first class.
Great video. I'd love to see one on mitter saws. I've been thinking about buying one for cross cutting (Dewalt 780) but I'm one the fence since many people say it's not accurate.
Love the idea. I purchased the dust collector for my Hercules 12" double-bevel sliding compound miter saw from shop nation and it's awesome. But, like you mentioned I still get a lot of dust from the throat plate. The DeWalt miter saw and the Hercules are very similar, will your throat plate dust collection system work on it? If so I'm getting one! Oh yea, and welcome back, always love to see your insight on woodworking. I stopped woodworking for about 30 years, and now that I'm retired I've built a house with a dedicated 14'x32' shop and getting back into it, so learning what's new and dusting off my old skills is a constant learning process.
@petenelson8136 If I remember correctly, the throat plate itself is one of the few differences between them, and it's a different shape. That leads me to believe it probably looks different under it too.
Got the Shop Nation one and it works well. I still get an accumulation under the saw because my zero clearance plate allows the blade to penetrate all the way through instead of encapsulating it. I wonder if there is enough room underneath the throat plate to have a collection point. That way the whole kerf in the throat plate would be sucking?
It's about time you showed up with a vid! Good jog on the dust collection we can't buy! If I can't buy the one you showed, do you have others that we CAN buy??🤣
You telling me I can’t buy it just makes me want to buy it even more, even though I don’t even own a dewalt sliding miter saw. Now I need to buy the saw.
Looks REALLY good! PLEASE (pretty please?) consider doing this for the 718 also? It's a pain that DW changed the shape of the insert. Hopefully this would be a relatively simple change to your 3D Print design to accomodate the different shape at the ends of the insert.
Pre-order only? That is OK with me, well worth waiting for, but do you even have a guestimate as to when it might really be available? Brilliant work BTW.
@marc82much Thanks!! I started shipping them out a week or so ago, but we had to do a pre-order because we didn't know how popular it would be, and in the event that it was really popular, we have to be able to keep up with the demand. These take a long time to make so it made more sense to have it on pre-order than have folks mad because they didn't get their stuff right away. Turns out it has been pretty popular, at least over the last couple of days. I haven't had a chance to see how many were ordered, but for now I would say orders are a couple of weeks out from when you order it.
Funny, I used to have an old ElektraBeckum mitersaw from the early 90's, a German brand that no loger exists, and guess what, that Saw actually was collecting dust from below and at the Sawblade too. Havn't seen that concept reappear on other saws until now :)
@bwielus International shipping gets kind of crazy. It takes so long to fill out customs forms and stand in line. Even Canada orders kill me sometimes. We are working on it though. Just need a way to streamline it and make it easier and less time consuming.
That solution seems like it's work for my Gen 1 flexvolt Dewalt saw as well. Too bad I once had kickback so bad on it that the throat plate and material was fired down so hard that it shattered the metal ledge under the throat plate where the screws go to attach it. Thus, I can no longer screw in any throat plate.
My only concern would be that tiny hose getting plugged. Glad you made it from small vinyl hose readily available at any home store! Manufacturers would have made it some odd size so folks would be required to get it from them for more 🤑
@mattrinne So true! Everyone has to have proprietary systems! Throughout all my testing, the hose has not gotten plugged. And actually, I reduced its size from my original designs. If you think about it, since you have a zero clearance insert, nothing wider than the blade should be entering the hose anyway. Although I suppose if you were cutting wet/sappy material it's possible. As a woodworker, this is not something that I deal with.
@KizenEnterprise I mean, the only way to know for sure is if you send me one to try out. 😀 Been a big fan of your work for a long time! As for MY dust collection parts, as far as I can tell it will absolutely work. There is nothing to get in the way of the fence whatsoever, even at either full miter.
I have a Dewalt DWS779 and got the shop nation dust shroud but for some reason it doesn't work. The saw still sprays dust everywhere still and I feel like the original worked better. I'm gonna check yours out and may order the set
@a-carpenter9229 Honestly it could be that this throat plate makes a huge difference in the performance of the Shop Nation one. I have no idea how my prototype compares to Travis's version as far as performance goes, but I know it made quite the difference for mine.
I noticed in the video some debris got stuck in the clear hose. Will you be attempting to try and fix this issue? Also will it become available for other saws?
@jronmanbuilds That little sliver got sucked up on the next cut. I still haven't had any issues with clogging, but because some folks were concerned about it, I redesigned the ports to accept 3/4 OD, 5/8 ID hose that can easily be purchased at most hardware stores. As for other saws, possibly. I have a list of requests, I'll put it that way. The problem that I'm running into is that manufacturers make subtle changes over time and sometimes those changes can mess up fitment. I'm actually running into that right now on an older 780.
I have very selfishly missed your videos for the last year and have been checking in regularly, waiting for my next "super obvious/accessible thing and or tip that you never thought of" video to hit my subscriptions. Glad to see you're back, happy so see that you found a focus that you have a passion for and an area you can innovate and make a difference in.
My problem is that I use a scrap of plywood as a zero clearance fence to get cleaner cuts and the black flap of the dust collection hits the blade and is cut in half.
I purchased a 3D printed dust port for my saw, a chunk about the size and thickness of a nickel shot off the blade and into the printed part resulting in a hole about 1/2” in diameter. I contacted the person who sold me the part thinking they would use this as an opportunity to use different plastics or increase the thickness to make the product better and maybe give me one of the improved parts as a thanks. Nope just tried to sell me another one, no thanks I threw some foil tape on it and that will be the last item from them I purchase.. Don’t misunderstand me if they saw it as an opportunity to use different tougher plastics or increase the thickness I’d consider buying the improved model, no thanks to the crappy one I already own. Make sure you check with your retailer to make sure what you are buying will last longer than 5 cuts.
Hello. Great work good person. I have been trying to tell the power tool manufacturers for years exactly what you have done here. With simple observation I even shut down totally the dust from a plunge saw on a rail and wrote an article including this in a British magazine. To this date no manufacturer has copied it. In this time how many people have choked to death on silica and wood dust ? The fine "resaw" dust exiting the throat plate at the back is the most dangerous as it is fine. Good luck and good judgement in all your endeavours.
Can you make 3D print files available for purchase for this? I have an **ahem** tendency to break things. I've printed the Shop Nation dust collection chute several times now due to breakage (my own fault). Also, it's fun to get a little creative with colors if you have a 3D printer.
@pbhogan I get it! I don't think I will have the print files available for this setup like I did the others. At least not until I can figure out how to bake branding into it. Too many knuckleheads buying files and then producing/selling themselves like it's their own work. It's a really bad problem right now.
@l00kns33 Anything that falls below the table is entirely gone. Thats a fact. Can’t do much for what the behind-the-blade attachment doesn’t collect. That might be what you’re seeing. During testing I recorded slow-mo video to ensure it captured everything.

Can I buy the orange shroud somewhere?😂
he is working on it. He will make it available after his prototyping is complete.

Well it’s a good thing that I can’t buy that one, because then I’d have to buy the matching miter saw😅.
Make one.

@howdog007 Unfortunately, probably not.
The Elu p274 sliding mitre saw had three point dust extraction. Something modern saws don’t do forsome reason.
Love it! But what happens to the insert when you cut at a 45 degree bevel?
@dereknykamp It gets destroyed! All of it though. Not just the insert. 😆

@bwielus International shipping gets kind of crazy. It takes so long to fill out customs forms and stand in line. Even Canada orders kill me sometimes. We are working on it though. Just need a way to streamline it and make it easier and less time consuming.
That makes sense. It’s frustrating for you and for everyone :) let’s keep our fingers crossed
So what happens to this contraption when the saw is beveled over?
So, what do you do when you cut a 45 bevel??
