I'm from South Africa. I did not know the history of this song. Alison and Union are so professional and the sounds are so exciting and in tune. I cannot single anyone out. I love all their songs. Thanks for sharing
I'm the descendant of more than a few Rebs, but that's all done. This song holds truths above politics. When my hubby left for Iraq, I was reminded of the lyric, "Be brave, but show mercy whenever you can. Our hearts will be with you, til you return again." Some things never change.
I am the proud descendant of Confederate Soldiers and Cavalrymen. This song touches my heart because I know the truth about the war, and the pain of the war and Reconstruction was shared with me by my father when I was a child. It wasn't that long ago to him because I am 50 years old now, and he was 48 when I was born. Bless this band for sharing the bravery of those precious men.
mtmaes83 Hey math major try reading what she "said", it seems reading comprehension may have evaded you. He shared stories from past family members with her. "and Reconstruction was shared with me by my father when I was a child."
mtmaes83 Did you figure it out or do you need another class of some kind?? Thank you Frosty95361! Sometimes they just don't get it, no matter how it is stated. By the way, in those days, 50years was not a long time because life was slow. The stories and the ways of life that was caused by the war and Reconstruction were still fresh in the minds of country people who had little contact with the majority. Thank you, sweetie.(Southern belle form of "kiss my ass!")
Fantastic ! I used to ride around Getttysburg listening to this. Trying to understand...All that went down there on that sacred ground...150 years ago.Deep stuff..
I'm from the North, Wisconsin, but i love this song because I live in the country and love freedom...forget the civil war, it happened and I wish it never did. My grandpa fought the Germans in WWII and I still get goosebumps from his stories even though he has passed on now. He helped liberate some of the Nazi extermination camps and I can't even imagine the atrocities he saw but he did it alongside some ARMY bro's from the south who probably had this song at heart. Happy Memorial Day!
This song hits me right in the gut. Growing up 15 miles from Appomattox Court House probably has something to do with it (plus it's an amazing rendition of the song).
This song said it all that's how I feel about my state my life and the way I live. We all went off to war to protect what was our way of life I still feel that way today. This is for all my Marine Brothers from the south who feel the same your born with it.
I've got ancestors who fought in the Union from Minnesota and I've got ancestors on the other side who fought in the Confederacy from Tennessee and Florida and I'm proud of all of them. I cannot lie though, I support the south's cause; it was a righteous one.
beautiful music real talent rather then just pushing a couple of buttons, the singer actually sung for george clooney in the movie " o brother where at thou"
The USA is secular nation with explicit separation of church and state. Both "Under god" in the pledge of allegiance and "in god we trust" in the currency were added in the 1950's as a stupid response to the red scare. Yes, the USA is a christian majority country but it is in all official aspects (or is at least supposed to be) secular.
@ultraman1red Not that hard: there R people especially in the south who fantasize about it all the time and would like to bring those times back and I know families TODAY who don't speak to each other because of politics. If u listen to some "news" outlets, they make a living by selling the idea that half of the country are not "real" Americans and as a consequence you have unstable individuals who go around shooting people who have a different set of beliefs. Traitors who pretend 2 b patriots!

How perfect is Dan Tyminski's voice? Just wow.
A perfect rendition of an old and beautiful song. Union Station is the most skilled and tasteful band to ever play bluegrass.
I can't get tired of this music or this album. I've listened to it so many time I feel like I was actually there.

You father wasn't even born until 50 years after the civil war ended. He had zero first hand accounts about it.

Let us all remember where we came from. Stand for what you know is right, and never blindly follow the crowd.
Ron's ol' '26 Granada sure has great drive. I love the sound of those old Gibson banjos.

@danielnordeen Yankee by birth, rebel by choice.
love this song. And LOVE this version without that the entire minute of worthless dry humor at the beginning.
It's a joke. Relax :)
I don't like the looks of that guy! I don't trust him.
