  • I recently started looking away from Maxxis tires and was intrigued with the new versions of the Vigilante and Trailboss, WTB released last year. I decided to buy the WTB Vigilante Light/High Grip + Slash Guard and the WTB Trailboss Light/Fast Rolling + Slash Guard. Both tires are with the new TriTec compound.

    Slowly I have been switching all of my bikes from Maxxis to WTB. It started with putting Raddlers on my gravel bike, Rangers on my XC bike, and now today i just mounted the Vigilante and Trailboss fo my trail bike. Ill be testing this combo at the bike park tomorrow.

    I’m running a 2.8 Vigilante on the front of my bike and it’s an impressive front tire. On the back I’m switching between the 2.6 Trail Boss and the 2.8 ranger depending on conditions. I use the tough casing in all of them as I like the stiff sidewalls that allow lower pressures.

    • @BrianVaughn
      @BrianVaughn  Рік тому

      Ranger is a nice rear tire. I had that on for my winter riding. The tough casing rolls pretty good and makes up for the added weight.

      @@BrianVaughn yesterday I rode a Rocky Black Diamond trail with some fairly steep descents and some rocky technical climbs with that Ranger on the back and it did everything I needed! I weigh 200lbs plus my hydration pack and I’m running 17PSI in that back tire with no bottoming out or cornering flex. I attribute this the the tough casing

    I'm running Maxxis 2.6 Agresser and I love them. Looked at WTB, but they were not available for my build last year.

      I had a 2.3 aggressor a while back but didn't have the traction I wanted. I'm really happy with WTB. A little heavier but I can run them softer and still have great control.

    I’m running rangers at the moment. Not sure about the weight but that rear tire wore out very quickly. They were grippy, predictable tires. Might try this WTB combo next. Thanks for the review!

      @@BrianVaughn these tires definitely is the best on the grippy and protection side of things. but these tires just drain the life out of me when climbing. You have any other lighter combo that you would recommend?

    • @BrianVaughn

      I was looking at a DHR2 front and back as a light weight option that should roll fast. I've had good luck with the WTB Ranger but it's in limited use and smallest option is 2.8. I'm curious about the Disector tire.

    bigger tires roll faster and absorb bumps better, have less rolling ressistance, better roll-over and grip. Plus the added wheight keep your momentum. That is why you were faster. Maybe also the placebo effect of new tires

  • @lonewolf30531

    The older we become the more grip we need.

  • @JamesStoup
    @JamesStoup 5 років тому +1

    Pretty spot on. The extra weight keeps the tires more on the ground meaning more grip. The sideknobs could be more outward letting you more aggressively corner. Oh well!

    I'm looking at getting this same combo but in a 2.5 vigilante up front (high grip, light) and a 2.4 trail boss on the rear (fast rolling). I'm torn between the casings on the rear though. Most reviews and forum posts recommend the tough casing. What is your experience with the light casing? Would you recommend the light casing over the tough casing? I weigh around 200 lbs or so with riding gear.
    Thanks

    • @BrianVaughn
      @BrianVaughn  5 років тому

      I'm 230 and have had no issues with the light with slash guard. I've ridden these tires for two months w/o issues. I don't blow through tires and tend to be mindful of sealant.

    • @steelonius
      @steelonius 5 років тому

      Another thing you could consider is that with the light casing the tire is more supple and will, therefore, dampen a lot of the vibration from smaller stuff and smooth out the ride more efficiently than a thicker heavier tire, i.e. tough casing. This makes a big difference on my hardtail, perhaps less noticeable on a full squish. However, if you're not riding in stuff where you think you'll rough up or gouge the sidewalls then I would recommend the light casing for the better compliance and feel that it offers.

    • @BrianVaughn
      @BrianVaughn  5 років тому +1

      Light casing has been fine so far. The slash guard is doing its job. Took these out to Colorado recently and they performed great.

    My trailboss tires don't say they are tubeless ready. Actually found in their web that they are not. Also found videos showing they mounted the trailboss tubeless with no problem. Did you us them with inner tube or tubeless? What do you think?

    • @BrianVaughn
      @BrianVaughn  3 роки тому

      So, you might have the older ones. They redesigned them in 2019. 2.4 and 2.6 versions are TCS Tubeless.

      @@BrianVaughn OK. these are 2.25. The rims are tubeless ready. What could happen if I try to go tubeless with them? Won't hold air at all? would leak air gradually? Might it possibly work well?

    • @BrianVaughn
      @BrianVaughn  3 роки тому

      I'd recommend Orange Seal sealant and give it a shot. I've made some non-tubeless tires work in the past. Typically they leak air over time but I still ran them tubeless.

    I wonder if the slash guard adds the weight. 🤔 I go back and forth between WTB and Maxxis and they are both fantastic. In my experience the WTB Vigilante is more predictable in corners. You can feel it slide a bit but I never had a problem washing out. The DHF though has amazing grip until you hit a point then it loses ALL grip. Washed out several times with a DHF 🤷‍♂️

    • @BrianVaughn
      @BrianVaughn  5 років тому +1

      I think the slash guard does add weight but I also think since the tires run true to size, it adds weight.
