Matthew Train Never heard of Snooker until I accidentally discovered a snooker table in a pool hall. Because America separated from Great Britain, it just never caught on and there's only a small following here. Also, Snooker tables are heavy and expensive. I don't live in the UK, so I can't just waltz over and buy one myself. I'm going to have to order a chinese one. If I had the option, I would want a real deal English one. I'm limited to the pool hall sadly.
jimmyfly He never said it wasn't complex. He was just saying the rules are actually very simple now that he has watched the video. He also never said it wasn't difficult to become good. Your reading comprehension must be extremely low. You're reading stuff in between the lines that isn't even there. In no way was he attacking snooker, but still you're trying to defend it.
I have played pool all of my life, but snooker has always been a mystery to me. I found your video very informative and easy to follow. Thanks for making the video and breaking the mystery for me.
IMO it’s better than pool. I find pool to be checkers and snooker chess. Pool is so simple while snooker is much more complicated and takes more mental work
@@aweigh1010 why would they? It’s terrible publicity trashing another sport. I play both pool and snooker and find snooker much harder. I can run a table in pool all day. Never ran a snooker table in my life and doubt I ever will. In pool they win frames SO MUCH when they pot a ball off the break. They pot one ball on the break and know exactly what they’re gonna do for the rest of the run. In snooker only the pros can run a whole table after being the first to pot. And even then, it’s VERY rare that there’s a frame where the other person doesn’t get an opportunity. In pool, half the time if they make a ball off the break it’s frame over. That’s what makes snooker more fun to watch. Both players get a chance each frame usually. You’ll have a frame here and there where the first to pot is first to win, but rarely ever does the first potter make it and you go “well, frame over” If it’s the better pool players, if one ball gets made off the break, more times than not they clear up. It’s SUPER annoying how that happens. That’s why 9 ball is really primarily what I watch. 8 ball seems like almost every frame is the first person to break ends up clearing up.
I'm another clueless American with no idea what snooker is, and randomly wound-up watching an O'Sullivan video and trying to figure-out what was going-on. This explained the game masterfully, many thanks!
and from what I've gathered from watching, Ronnie O'Sullivan is pretty much the best in the world at what he does. Anybody please correct me if I'm wrong :D
did you watch his maximum break video? the one where he asked the judge what the bonus was for a maximum break was fantastic. he knew at the break he was gonna run the table, i felt bad for his opponent

I was looking for a quick guide to Snooker. I wanted to have some idea how this game is played. And this video did just that! It gave me all the info in a nut shell! Good explanation, concise and to the point. Thanks for caring and sharing.
I’ve wanted to play snooker for ages but have never been able to get a good grasp on rules. This video clearly and explicitly explained the rules, but also did it as simply as possible, so much easier to understand than trying to just read the rules on my own. Great job, thank you so much!
very helpful, played billiards (8 and 9 Ball) all the time and Snooker seemed kind of confusing but this video was pretty easy to understand and I have a grasp on how Snooker is played
I already knew the rules to snooker, however, this is a great video for those who are unfamiliar with the sport, as it can be confusing if you don't know the rules :)
Linden Lloyd Yes, to someone who hasn't seen it before, it looks confusing. But once you explain it properly, it's easy enough. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe if you haven't already :)
I live only a half a mile down the road from the only 12 ft Snooker table in the Denver Metro area and see guys playing it all the time. Never knew anything about it or how to play it until watching this video. Awesome video and very instructional 👍
Video very well done. I played thousands of games of pool before I ever tried Snooker and now I am hooked. I prefer it to pool as it is much more strategic...like comparing Chess to Checkers.
When I was in school, I used to go home for lunch, and many times, snooker was on the TV when I came home. I, at the time, had no clue about the rules, but still enjoyed watching. Alot of things from then make sence to me now. Thank you for explaining! :)
I'm heading off to play snooker with my son (his first time) this weekend. He's dying to play - really looking forward to it and we watched this video so he has a grasp of the rules. Great vid, thanks for all your work :)
I actually watched video of O'Sullivan scoring 147 on facebook and this got me interested in knowing all the rules of the game. And this video was having all answers to my questions. Much better than reading a long document about rules and other stuffs. Great Stuff.. Cheers
Excellent video. I have spent a lot of time, in the past, trying to explain snooker, and now I know there is an excellent resource out there I have therefore, saved this video to its own playlist so it's quick and simple to find. I will share it with anybody who needs to know.
My boyfriend loves snooker, he plays it everyday. I aim to outdo him with my snooker knowledge, now that I know the rules I can learn to play and be better than him hahah thanks for this !!! Very clear and helpful

I just recently started watching snooker games and I picked up on the gist of the game very quickly. This video was good for affirming that, as well as teaching some of the more niche rules I didn’t quite understand yet. Thanks.
Thank you, it's been many years since I played as a youngster. Found it very interesting and challenging smaller pocket and more delicate when shooting
I've watched enough games I had a good idea of the point values but I wasn't aware of the foul scoring so thank you for the ez to understand detailed explanation
Cheers for putting this out, as an amateur pool player that just joined a snooker club I can tell you this video made a world of difference in comparison to the text based content that’s out there 🙌🏻
Was watching a video of snooker and couldn't understand why people were applauding for a shot that bounced around the table only to tap against one of the other balls. The explanation of Foul & A Miss makes it clear that if you have no other options, simply making contact with the correct ball is enough to deny your opponent penalty points. Very helpful to know.
Knowing how to play snooker is one thing, actually being able to play snooker successfully is quite another. Apparently the two most frustrating games in the world are played with a stationary ball, snooker & golf.
Great video, Ninh, with clear instructions! Thank for posting it. I do have a question, if you don't mind, how many points is the black ball? I only heard that it was a maximum of 7.
matt THORNE I haven't done a video on Chess, as it's more of a board game than a sport. In fact, you're the only person to ever ask me for it. If I get enough demand, I can do, but I'm pretty sure there's plenty of videos out there that teach that sort of thing.
+Ninh Ly Chess is a sport! +MattTHORNE There are many great chess videos on youtube already. Sign up for free at chess.com. They have lots of instruction and if you upgrade instructional videos.
I stumbled upon Ronnie playing in the masters, watched a frame and was pretty sure I understood but wanted to make sure. This video clarified everything perfectly but I was excited that I'd gleaned the basics.
I've been watching snooker videos for a while and didn't know about the "touching ball" rule. Does that apply to any color? If it's touching a red and you have to play a red for your next shot, do you have to play for another red?
Hi David. Yes, I believe that if you are touching red, you must hit a completely different red ball without moving the the 'touching ball' otherwise, it's a foul. It's in Section 3 of the WPBSA rulebook, I think? Hope that helps?
Yes it does, thanks. I saw one where Ding Junhui had the cue ball touching two reds at the same time against Selby. He cued straight down and barely moved the cue ball but didn't play on another red. He wasn't called for a foul.
If you are touching a red and and your next shot has to be a red then you do not have to hit another red. You can hit another red if you choose or even a colour or as is often the case no ball at all but the only thing that actually matters is that you do not move the red you are touching at the moment of striking the cue ball. If you are touching a colour and your next ball is red you simply have to hit a red without moving the colour you are touching. If you are touching a colour and your next ball has to be a colour you can either nominate the colour you are touching and play away hitting any ball or no ball as long as you do not move the ball you are touching or you can nominate another colour and play away from the ball you are touching while striking the ball you have nominated first without moving the ball you are touching.
Yes Darren is spot on, if the next ball on is the touching ball, it is deemed that the player has already hit it when they play away, no other contact is necessary - though just as in the case of any other cannon, is also legal.
Loved it. I play billiards all the time and wondered how this game was played. I learned to play CutThroat while in Vegas and it was very interesting. Thanks.
One thing I was always confused about was why do players have to call the color of the ball they're shooting at at some points where they know they can't make a pot?
Hi Chris. Believe it or not, the 'official rule' is that you have to call the colour you're shooting at every single time. But the referee's don't enforce it if a snooker player is obviously aiming for a specific colour. i.e. he's pointing the cue ball in the direction of the black ball and it's obvious that the snooker player aims to pot the black ball. If it's unclear which one he's going for, the referee will ask him to make a declaration, and if it's unclear if he will make the pot, he has to declare which colour he's aiming for, otherwise it's a foul if another ball goes in. Hope that helps?
Well done. I thought I understood snooker well, but your video cleared up a couple of misconceptions for me (namely 'free ball' and 'touching ball' which had twists I didn't even consider).
I watched this video so that I could understand a play called “The Nap” and I feel quite prepared now to let hilarity ensue and enjoy the play throughly!
I remember my father wanted me to give snooker a try when I was a child after playing american pool But I had a hard time following the rules and I was scared by the sheer size of the table hahahahaha Now I'd love to give it a proper try but I don't know if there are any good tables left (Argentina)
Believe it or not, I used to practice snooker on a pool table by buying smaller snooker balls. You can learn the game and then move onto a bigger table when you're ready.
@@mikepowell8213 I was wondering the same thing, as I've yet to see more that one ball fall on a strike. Thought there might be a foul involved, but the point potential makes sense. Thanks!
now I understand all these videos of funny moments, etc Ive been watching. I had an general idea from pool and Billards but now, clearly get it. Well done.
+Greg Scott Yes it does! If another ball is on or near the spot of a coloured ball (to be replaced), and the ball won't go back on it's spot properly, the next available dot is used to place the coloured ball back on the table. Hope that helps? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
+Greg Scott I'm a big fan of Snooker but I love watching these videos anyway :P Just to add to the rule of replacing a ball where the spot is already taken, if it cannot go on its own spot then it is placed on the highest value spot available. If no spot is available, then it is placed as close to its own spot as possible in a direct line with the top cushion :)
1:07 Respot rules: - If any red ball is successfully potted, it is in the pocket forever - If a color ball is potted after the red ball, it is respotted by the referee on its corresponding position, similar to which at the beginning of the game. However: + If the color ball's original position is occupied, it will be respotted on the vacant place of the highest-scored ball possible, but: + If all other color ball's spot is also occupied, the color ball will be respotted on a spot on the line perpendicular to the black and bulk cushion. That spot has to be the nearest possible to its original position TOWARD the black cushion. - If all reds are potted (the last red potted still allows for a free choice of color ball one more time), the game goes into the final stage, where color balls have to be potted in ascending score order. In this stage, if a color ball is potted, it will not be respotted.
When both the cue ball and object ball are touching in a stationary position, you must hit a different ball or either play away otherwise it’s considered a push shot which is a foul.
I wasn't to sure how this game worked. It all makes sense now thank you. Also seen on Facebook a guy that successfully pulled a 147 off and my guess to that was that he had scored the maximum amount of points.
magzire If that spot is covered by another ball, the ball is placed on the highest available spot. If there is no available spot, it is placed as close to its own spot as possible in a direct line between that spot and the top cushion, without touching another ball. If there is no room this side of the spot, it will be placed as close to the spot as possible in a straight line towards the bottom cushion, without touching another ball
It's an art and a science for sure. If you ever get to watch Ronnie O'Sullivan - he just make incredibly difficult snooker look easy. Thanks for stopping by!
Conceding means you don't come back to the table, so it doesn't just stop the game, i.e. your opponent can continue to play until the end of their turn
your first shot must be to a red. after every potted red you must hit or pot a color. the reds stay in the pocket the color comes back up to a certain spot. when all the reds are gone the colors must be potted in a certain order.
I watched the videos for fun and never really understood the game... but now after watching this video, I really understand it, so nice video and I subscribed and liked!
Thank you very much for this informative video on Snooker, I appreciate it. I'm not sure how, but Snooker wound up on my recommended play list, and I watched some of it and was fascinated. Thus, wound up coming here to figure out what everything means. Thanks again!
I've been watching snooker many times a day in my life, and wherever I don't know how the game is purposely played, I watched this just to help me understand the point of everything in the game
Thanks I've been wondering how it's played. I watch highlights of crazy shots but I never quite understood why they were shooting at certain balls over others and now I get it
***** Thanks Nick, I remembered that you wanted a video about Snooker - so sorry it took a while, but it's here. 9-Ball Pool next week! Thanks for stopping by :)
Here is a response to the 'tin foil hat wearing conspiracy nuts' indicating that the maximum break is actually 155.
Under normal conditions, the maximum break is 147. This is widely considered fact and is taken as the maximum that a player can score BY THEMSELVES in one trip to the table, WITHOUT the assistance of fouls.
Once you start adding fanciful and unrealistic scenarios that a pro player would foul on the black on the very first shot (they wouldn't) or be given a free ball near to the start of the game (unlikely), some uneducated individuals insist that the maximum break is 155. This has never happened in the history of professional snooker.
But then you can take it hypothetically further ... a player fouls on the black on the very first shot, the other player asks him to repeat the shot, he fouls on the black again, the other player asks him to repeat the shot, he fouls on the black AGAIN, but this time, the other player comes to the table and then scores the maximum 147. This leaves the final score 168 - 0.
So therefore the maximum break is 168.
Or is it 175?
Or is it 770?
Has any score over 155 ever happened in the professional game? Nope.
What if "Que ball is in touch with a red ball, played to release it free but did touch a color ball." . What happens in this case?
please explain same situation with different possible shots(outcomes)
Fouls of your opponent are never part of any break. 147 is a maximum and 155 is the highest break you can score with a free ball situation.
This hypothetical free ball situation has never happened in the history of the professional game.
That is ok. But , say me what will be the empire declaraion according to the snooker rules(for below sitation)?
1) I played and potted a red, the cue-ball is in kiss with red now. What should I do?
2)Starting of my turn, the cue-ball is in kiss with a red, I tried to play the cueball without touching anything, but it touched a coor ball. Is that shot ok?

Great video, Ninh, with clear instructions! Thank for posting it. I do have a question, if you don't mind, how many points is the black ball? I only heard that it was a maximum of 7.
+Brian Kelly Hi Brian. The black ball is worth 7 points. Sorry for the late reply, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Thank you! I was having trouble understanding when the free ball rule should be applied and you explained it well.
+syiadn You're welcome, I'm glad I helped. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

Great video. People that makes an effort like this should get a medal.
Thanks Erik! Believe it or not, I've made a whole series of these so be sure to check them out! :)
Ninh Ly I will! Amazing work
Cheers bro!
Have you done one on chess that game always confuses me if not can you plz do one
matt THORNE I haven't done a video on Chess, as it's more of a board game than a sport.
In fact, you're the only person to ever ask me for it.
If I get enough demand, I can do, but I'm pretty sure there's plenty of videos out there that teach that sort of thing.
You've got a point it's not really a sport. Great videos btw keep up the good work
+Ninh Ly Chess is a sport!
@@NinhLyUK No this in incorrect, touching ball is play away and you do not have to hit another ball as you have already hit the ball you are touching
Loved it. I play billiards all the time and wondered how this game was played. I learned to play CutThroat while in Vegas and it was very interesting. Thanks.
Anytime Rafael, glad you found this video useful in understanding Snooker.

Yes it does. Thank you!
Any time bro!
Well done. I thought I understood snooker well, but your video cleared up a couple of misconceptions for me (namely 'free ball' and 'touching ball' which had twists I didn't even consider).
Anytime bro, glad this video helped!
I watched this video so that I could understand a play called “The Nap” and I feel quite prepared now to let hilarity ensue and enjoy the play throughly!
Cool, glad this video helps you understand Snooker.

Ronnie O'Sullivan is the best Snooker player.
Certainly seems that way!
He’s good.. but what about Mark Selby?
Matthew Lo Selby probably no2
short, well explained and right to the point. Great video!
U explained so well..that now i can defeat Ronnie 😂🤟🏼
Thanks. But nobody defeats Ronnie, that guy is a machine!
Ninh Ly I know right...i was kidding
M a big fan too❤️
Even I defeated ronnie in snooker the guy next door ronnie Paul
So glad I decided to click on this video in the sidebard after the previous one failed to explain it at all. Excellent video
Thanks AJ! Check out my channel for more videos like this!
I remember my father wanted me to give snooker a try when I was a child after playing american pool
But I had a hard time following the rules and I was scared by the sheer size of the table hahahahaha
Now I'd love to give it a proper try but I don't know if there are any good tables left
(Argentina)
Believe it or not, I used to practice snooker on a pool table by buying smaller snooker balls.
You can learn the game and then move onto a bigger table when you're ready.
Just getting into both pool and snooker at the same time. Found the video simple and concise. All that's left now is to play. :)
Add 3 cushion billiards to your journey! You won't regret it.
you´re alowed to score two red balls in a roll?
No, once you pot a red - you must aim for a different coloured ball.
oh thanks
You can pot 2 or more reds in one shot. But usually it is disadvantageous as you can't score as much points.
show in a row, not in a roll.
Well done.
Thanks, glad this video helps you understand Snooker!
Does it ever happen that the movement of balls interferes with the replacement of a colored ball?
+Greg Scott Yes it does! If another ball is on or near the spot of a coloured ball (to be replaced), and the ball won't go back on it's spot properly, the next available dot is used to place the coloured ball back on the table. Hope that helps? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Yes, it does. Thanks! I don't know the game but I'm getting hooked watching these bid's.
LeePrototype That clears it up pretty well, Lee. Thanks. It really is an amazing game.
Greg Scott It is, I've been hooked ever since I discovered it :)
1:07 Respot rules:
- If any red ball is successfully potted, it is in the pocket forever
- If a color ball is potted after the red ball, it is respotted by the referee on its corresponding position, similar to which at the beginning of the game. However:
+ If the color ball's original position is occupied, it will be respotted on the vacant place of the highest-scored ball possible, but:
+ If all other color ball's spot is also occupied, the color ball will be respotted on a spot on the line perpendicular to the black and bulk cushion.
So basically Snooker is the fancy sport, and pool is the practical sport
Depends on how you look at it.
Thank you so much!! It's the best explaining video that I've ever seen! Now I can enjoy snooker games 👏🏻
Thanks man, glad this video helped you out.

"and you cannot move a touching ball" does he mean you cannot touch a moving ball?
You can't do that either, but what I mean is that if the cue ball is resting on a ball, you cannot move it.
Only when you're the only person in the room while playing.
When both the cue ball and object ball are touching in a stationary position, you must hit a different ball or either play away otherwise it’s considered a push shot which is a foul.
@steve gibson thats a different game, called pocket billiards
I wasn't to sure how this game worked. It all makes sense now thank you. Also seen on Facebook a guy that successfully pulled a 147 off and my guess to that was that he had scored the maximum amount of points.
Thanks man, much appreciated. And yes, 147 is the maximum.

You never mention what would happen if the colored ball spots are covered by another ball after a pot.
Dude, there's a lot of rules I didn't mention. It's impossible to list every nuance in a 5 minute video.
very unprofessional... haha
magzire If that spot is covered by another ball, the ball is placed on the highest available spot. If there is no available spot, it is placed as close to its own spot as possible in a direct line between that spot and the top cushion, without touching another ball. If there is no room this side of the spot, it will be placed as close to the spot as possible in a straight line towards the bottom cushion, without touching another ball
Excellent! I've been playing snooker for a week now and I love It
It's an art and a science for sure. If you ever get to watch Ronnie O'Sullivan - he just make incredibly difficult snooker look easy. Thanks for stopping by!
Can you concede while your opponent is on their way to a 147? Lol
In theory yes, but usually it's customary to just sit back and watch.
Conceding means you don't come back to the table, so it doesn't just stop the game, i.e. your opponent can continue to play until the end of their turn
you can, but play continues for the record, and for the fans, until a miss
did not imagine to find such a perfect on point explanation thanks
Sorry i dont understand;-)
Keep watching snooker and it'll all make sense. Be sure to share this vid and subscribe :)
@@OtakuLogan2017 I dont think the real luca brecel knows the rules
your first shot must be to a red. after every potted red you must hit or pot a color. the reds stay in the pocket the color comes back up to a certain spot. when all the reds are gone the colors must be potted in a certain order.
I watched the videos for fun and never really understood the game... but now after watching this video, I really understand it, so nice video and I subscribed and liked!
Clear and precise. Fine work!
Thank you kindly!
