    These coaching videos got me from nothing to a 31 break last week. I feel like the little tiny things Barry does go into my game, and a little bit of practice gets these bits worked in. I feel like keeping going with this will get me to 40-50 soon. Thanks Barry.

    What a fantastic coaching session. As someone who is looking to totally revamp their backhand grip to a more conventional grip the segment on the backhand grip was brilliant, so detailed and explained thoroughly without being too complex. Thanks Barry....:--)

      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому +1

      MEECHIO. My pleasure. When a player has a problem with his game it is a fair bet that the grip is related to that problem, either where or how he is holding the cue.

    I tried this technique out last time I went to practice at the Club I belong to. It made a wonderful difference! As a woman I find there are so many "experts" wanting to coach you that it can be overwhelming when everyone has their different "tips" to give you. I love being able to practice some basic techniques to help me improve my game. Barry delivers the message in very simple terms that is easy to watch and learn from.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому +2

      Dayamitra. I find this all the time, people giving well meant but naive advice, it is always a problem for the beginner knowing who to listen to. I am very pleased Selina came to see me, she was in the same position as you, doing her own thing but at the same time listening to that well meant/naive advice. She has made good progress and is now playing for a local team when her employment allows.

      Since I wrote to you I have secured a good coach that I'm happy with. I have a lesson with him and then come home and check out your video's for similar practices and to see perhaps the same techniques from a different perspective.
      I am so grateful for this opportunity to play snooker at last after all the years of feeling a little put off around the men! Now I love giving the men something to think about when they play me because I'm not being just a walk over!
      I enjoy watching all you videos and cannot express my gratitude and gratefulness to be able to play this wonderful game! I spent my teenage years (yes, this does age me, ha!) watching the Pot Black series and wishing I could play the game - and now I can and I love it!

    Now this takes it to a whole new level. It's one thing to watch Kyren or Ronnie, or even you practice. You three are so grooved in the stroke, but to watch you work with someone not so advanced is highly enlightening (although she does have a good stroke already). Also seeing the breakdown of the cuing action with helpful reminders along the way is awesome! Can't wait for the next one, but I'm going to watch this one a few (dozen) more times. Thank you very much Barry!

      Karen. To achieve what you have achieved you must have natural ability. In my early days I too was a reasonable player but I knew something was holding me back so I did my research, changed a whole lot of things and my game developed from there. Unfortunately with a family and mortgage, earning a living became my priority so any snooker revolved around coaching.

    Many weeks back I asked your opinion regarding unusually strong bounces off the rail. I’m relatively new to Snooker. Your response took me by surprise. I’d never have thought static electricity could be a possible cause. I’ve been playing a good amount since then and haven’t come up with any reasonable theory matching yours. Static electricity it is then.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Mr B. Don't know if I said it last time but it is a physical impossibility for a ball to bounce off the cushion faster than it hit the cushion unless there is another force at work. The only force I can come up with is static electricity, if someone can prove me wrong I will gladly listen and be educated.

    • @pawandyes
      @pawandyes 5 років тому

      also if there is cue chalk on the ball and the when the ball hits the rail with the chalk mark in between the rail and ball ... you will notice that the ball bounces back much more than if the ball was clean. You can experiment this quite easily ... take two balls in one hand and bounce them simultaneously on the rail at medium/low speed... they will bounce back together and travel the same distance more or less. NOW, make a chalk mark with the cue chalk on the rail and bounce the same two balls with one hand, one ball must hit the chalk mark on the rail. You will notice that the ball which hits the Chalk mark will bounce unusually stronger off the rail and much further than the ball which did not hit the chalk mark.

    hi ,
    I am enjoying and benifeted your videos too much, thank you.
    I am playing snooker from time to time say twice a week but missing a lot of shots.I am using the club cues is this affecting the play much?, mean do you advice to buy a personal cue and what quality you advice?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Mohammad. Certainly using club cues is not ideal and it will affect your game and therefore your progress in the game. Please get your own cue but as a beginner it would be advisable to take a more experienced friend with you when you choose. I am afraid you get what you pay for, so although choosing a cue is a personal thing it is also important to go to a reputable dealer. Choose between ash or maple shaft, an ebony butt, three quarter jointed cue or one piece. Make sure it is straight, about 17 to 18 ounces in weight, nicely balanced and no varnish on the shaft.

    I dont know why some players think the way that you hold the cue isnt important and its just a matter of taste. You have to know , its not! Every Instrument wich you use to do something with ( imagine a bow , for playing violin ) you have to obey certain rules and practice on those rules for a long time , only to be able to use that potential wich lies within that instrument ,, taste only comes in play when you are SO good with that instrument that you can step a little bit farther than limits and get away with it. So please fellas , dont understimate the tips wich he pointed out ,, if youre not potting balls as much as you want , the first and most probable thing that is wrong with you , is your stance and your cue holding technic. May the force be with ya'll! 😁

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому +3

      MH D and Tone. You players share my view, there is only one thing that has got hold of that cue and there is only one thing that delivers that cue and that is the hand holding it, If a player has a problem with his/her game one of the things I will look at is the grip.

      Exactly. To give an analogy, I've been playing guitar for several years and never got a teacher. I'm actually very good, but there are limits that I just can't surmount because my technique is fundamentally flawed in some areas. After too many years, it becomes nearly impossible to change technique. It's so important to make sure that your technique is proper before you've cemented it

    Love the coaching sessions, and the well-made videos. Question about the stroke-length markings, how are these determined? From the land of 8-ball, I find Snooker fascinating and want to find a table.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому +2

      Wade. The first mark is between 10 and 12 inches indicating where the bridge hand is positioned, the second mark is 6 inches away from the first and indicates the amount of follow through. These marks are only guide lines and may vary slightly between players.

    Hi Barry,
    It seems you are encouraging a pause at the end of feathering a few times. Do you recommend a pause for new players and even for intermediate ones? It seems a lot of the best pros do not pause before the follow through.
    Thanks!

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому +3

      brian. I am afraid that I cannot agree that a lot of the best pros do not pause before the follow through. Good players and pros recognise that the transition between pulling the cue back and delivering it forward is a vital area and a lot of mistakes are made here. They pause or at the very least have a very distinct slowing down to aid with this transition of movement and also to aid with concentration. Beginners tend to not only hit the ball too hard they also are in a rush to get the shot over with in the belief that they are delivering the cue where they are aiming, generally they are not. I personally have quite a long pause which allows my ageing eyes time to focus on the target before I play the shot.

    • @brianolderfellow4072
      @brianolderfellow4072 6 років тому +1

      Thanks, Barry, I too have a pause and it works best for me. Just wondering how I might best teach my grandchildren. I guess my main pro was Ronnie O' who doesn't seem to pause but he is a unique player in many respects.

    Excellent video. When doing the three practice strokes before the delivery stroke, where should you be looking? Would you be watching the cue the whole time, before switching to the object ball during the pause?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому +1

      Greg. Firstly let me say that the three practise strokes have been introduced to groove Selina's muscle action in the correct manner and t demonstrate to her the importance of shot preparation. By no means is it mandatory that a player has to perform three preparatory strokes, everyone is different and prepares to play the shot differently. Coming back to your question, the eyes will flit between, cue, cue ball, and object ball, I don't believe in a set pattern for this, what suits one player may not suit another.

    How do I set up the right pencil mark on my own cue Barry? If there is a video on this then could you please send me a link to it? I have watched a lot of your videos but can't find one to help us set up our own cue to be more consistent & Is the purpose of it to be the same distance from the cue ball on every shot? I have watched part 2 with Salina and wondered the same in that video:) Keep up the great work. You are a Legend. Thank you for all you do.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому

      ToTheEdge. The pencil mark is only a guide but certainly it can be important. The purpose is indeed to allow the player to be more consistent with the bridge hand position but also the player and coach should recognise that this would be impossible to achieve on every shot. My suggestion is that where the knuckle of the thumb meets the forefinger of the bridge hand, that distance should be 10 to 12 inches from the cue ball with 10.5 inches suiting the needs of most players. When this bridge hand position is not possible because of the position of the cue ball e.g. near a cushion, and it has to be moved, then the grip hand should also be moved a similar distance, this means that the relationship between the two hands is fairly consistent also.

  • @roytaylor414
    @roytaylor414 4 роки тому

    I've been making that mistake for years gripping the cue in the same place and just moving the bridge hand to play the shot.thanks for pointing this out.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому

      Roy. You will have to move the bridge hand on occasions because of its position on the table and the position of other balls but try to keep any excessive movement to a minimum.
