    Are you using a Stream Deck? Something else? What are your go-to peripherals for speeding up your video editing in Final Cut Pro X?

      Oh yes, but only the SD XL, never thought of the this option. A bit of distraction when using the SD because you really need to press those buttons, I guess much smoother operation with the mobile app. I do have an old iPad mini that's just acting as a desk clock most of the time, will be testing this out. Thanks for the walkthrough, great that that you showed everything in detail. Btw 😏😂 you were a bit off to the right although the whole setup was nearly made for you being in the middle. I can't believe I'm nagging about that, sorry for 1000 times...

      It’s fun to nitpick sometimes. ☺️ I don’t mind. I’ll double check my framing next time. My studio is a little off center as well so I have to use some trickery to get it right.
      But yes, that’s my concern about having to push physical buttons on the SD or SD XL. The iPad is just so fast and responsive to touch.

      As a somewhat new user of FCP I have a thin silicone keyboard cover from Editors Keys that has all the main keyboard shortcuts on it and some color coding. It's really helped me pick up the keyboard shortcuts a lot faster. I have a handy printout I made with some extras from your "magic tricks" videos right next to me when I'm editing too!! 😎👍

      I’ve been using my iPad Pro as a second (or third monitor) BECAUSE it’s touch screen. Things you can do and draw you can’t do on a traditional monitor. Sidecar. Also a restaurant in Omaha. Saw it on the way to Blazin’ Pianos when I traveled to Omaha to perform.
      Be well. Your channel is great. Good luck growing. Just keep adding water, brother.

    A few weeks ago I assigned the trim tools to the 1, 2, and 3 number keys. I don’t use the Multicam feature so wasn’t using those keys and they’re very easy to find without looking. No modifier key necessary. Trim Start: 1; Blade: 2; Trim End: 3. Has tripled my editing speed. Thank you for these great tips and shortcuts, this is a fantastic channel.

    Little bit older video, but I had to comment. As my english isn't that fluent (yet! :P) I have to edit a lot of my speech sections to remove the silent parts and "oo"s. After I switched to FCPX one of the first thing I did was to reassign keyboard shortcuts to left and right bracket and blade tool.
    Now i have them side by side on Q-W-E-buttons. W is "blade" and "brackets" are on either side of that. Cutting and trimming is SO MUCH FASTER. (

    Thank you SO MUCH for this video. I recently injured my left wrist, which obviously makes using shortcuts on that side of the keyboard difficult and this video has been a lifesaver. Hadn't heard of StreamDeck prior to watching this and have since invested in a 2nd hand iPad Air solely for use when editing. The fact the app recognises which app I'm using on the main screen means I've been able to build up different shortcuts for general use (copy, paste, screen capture), FCPX and Motion.

      That’s incredible, Nicholas! What a great story. So glad my video and the Stream Deck Mobile app have kept you up and running with all your work and creativity. And good on you for snagging an older iPad Air. I hope the app continues to be supported in older iOS versions so these older devices can find continued use instead of hitting the trash heap. My 6 yr old iPad Mini 2 has new life because of the app. Love it!

    That's a cool app. I might have to check it out. I customized my keyboard to use the first 5 number keys to do similar tasks. 1 is trim right, 2 is blade, 3 is trim left and 4 is zoom in on timeline and 5 is zoom out. That way I can just keep my fingers resting on the 123 keys and use my right hand to skim around the timeline and you can blade and eliminate stuff crazy fast. Of course this ruins the multi-cam buttons for switching, but you can always switch the keyboard layouts back to the original for that.

      Dang, dude! That sounds like it works great for you, and losing that Multicam functionality may not be a big deal. I think that's a solid workflow and if I wasn't all-in with Stream Deck I'd strongly consider that method. 🤘🏻🙌🏻

Like I've said numerous times, it's incredibly frustrating at first because it's such a HUGE paradigm shift in video editing software. Don't hesitate to reach out if you hit a wall and want to chuck the computer out the window. 🤬 And definitely get more of your vids done! I noticed you don’t have a number pad on your keyboard. If you did, multicam is so easy to switch angles by just typing 1 , 2, 3. It’s my go to way to switch to cameras

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 роки тому

      Agreed! But I don't edit the camera angles first when it comes to my vlogs - I edit the content down to what I absolutely want to say and get all those edits nice and precise and from there I can use my shortcut on Stream Deck Mobile to play back my edit and switch angles as I listen back to everything. If I produced a 3+ camera multi-cam event, I would absolutely use the 1,2, 3 method, and I would plug in my full-size keyboard to do that. But I don't edit any content like that, so it's just never been needed. Thanks for the recommendation! And thanks for watching!

    Try Resolve with the new free mobile Speed Edit bundle. I used FinalCut since before it was released, when it was a Macromedia beta product pre-Apple’s acquisition. I did 6 movies and many hundreds of productions with it for decades. I dabbled in Resolve some years back, but by 16 with the synergy with the dedicated keyboard, I was able to edit much, much faster, and create better productions.
    Now they offer a free version of the mobile Speed editor with a copy of their $295 studio version. Give that, the fact that Fairlight comes bundled, 17 is in beta and that its precursor of Eyeon version of Resolve plus Fairlight cost about $1.25 million+ before BlackMagic purchased it and massively upgraded it; I loved FinalCut but could never waste time and production quality with it anymore.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 роки тому +1

      Appreciate the thoughtful recommendation, Andrew. Sounds like you're a true Power User! I stick with FCPX mainly because I'm "just" an editor - I don't do color work or audio post-production. For all of my paid client work, I hire a colorist and sound mixer to do the finishing work on my edits. I don't disagree that for some users, DaVinci is a much better NLE for their video editing, but for me I prefer the simplicity of FCPX because there are limitations on my "video engineering" or "mechanical" knowledge, and FCPX allows me to get into and stay in the creative flow. I am an absolute nut for media organization and the power of FCPX's Event Browser (and tools like Favorites, Keywords & Smart Collections) also keeps me on the platform, especially because I edit a lot of documentaries (shorts, mostly). I also feel a lot of friction when editing with track-based NLEs - the Magnetic Timeline connects with me on a deep, spiritual level as a creator (I'm being INCREDIBLY hyperbolic here 🤣), and I couldn't bear to part with it. Thanks for watching and commenting - FCPX is the right tool for me, and it sounds like BlackMagic / Resolve is the right fit for you. Happy editing!

    Hi Matthew, nice idea. While I was seeing the video it came to my mind that you could use BetterTouchTool to convert whatever combination of keys and/or mousepad moves/clicks to a keyboard shortcut. I use it a lot for other stuff but now I’ll configure it to use it in FCPX. Did you try or think about this option?

    I've been considering buying a Loupdeck for this kind of thing, but this is a much cheaper alternative. I wonder how they compare given the massive difference in price?

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 роки тому +1

      The Loupedeck is definitely more advanced than the Stream Deck, and the two Loupedeck models that have touch screens AND knobs/dials are definitely pricey. I like the look and design of them more than the Stream Deck hardware, but for me Stream Deck Mobile on an iPad is the best, cleanest look.
      I think a Loupedeck is good if you need A LOT of programmable buttons or keys that match a lot of what a keyboard does. I also think the larger $549 Loupedeck is almost meant to, for some power users, replace a keyboard rather than complement it. I think if you’re doing a lot of color work in FCPX it’s possible the knobs and dials really help with that... 🤷🏻‍♂️
      For me, as of now, the Stream Deck Mobile app on my old iPad Mini 2 (that was literally gathering dust unless I used it as a teleprompter) was truly the best value and a great way to see if I even like these kinds of devices in my workflow. So far, I *love* using the app while I edit.

  • @daydreamerdav3450
    @daydreamerdav3450 2 роки тому +1

    its 2.99 monthly if you pay for the app! for a average of 4 years you have literally spent the 150.00 you pay for a full size stream deck MK.2 with 15 customizable keys

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  2 роки тому +1

      I get that - for me, I just don't love the physical Stream Deck device. With the iPad version I feel like I have more control, and I feel like I can set it up on my desk more to my liking. When you factor in the cost of the iPad mini (even an older one) it especially adds up to more than a Stream Deck. I guess I'm just weird in valuing what I get with my setup vs. saving some money. It's worth it to me.

      Congrats on starting your Stream Deck + FCP journey! Sorry it's off to a rocky start. First things I would do:
      1. Verify that the Elgato Stream Deck app on your Mac is fully up-to-date
      2. Verify that the Stream Deck app on your iOS device is fully up-to-date
      3. If they are, try a restart of both devices and try again.
      4. Make sure your iOS device has an active connection with the macOS app (sometimes mine connects to the wrong computer)
      5. If it's still not working make sure that Final Cut Pro is the active application when executing the Stream Deck macro (easy to overlook, but I have done this plenty of time without realizing macOS has some other application window as the active window)
      The only time I see this issue on my setup is on occasion when I use my Quicktime shortcut that allows me to right into a screen recording. It happens rarely, but it does happen. I can't recall what the cause was because it's been quite a while since it's done that.

      I use my Stream Deck Mobile subscription on my iPad in my main edit bay, I use it on my old iPhone for my mobile setup, and I use it on my newer iPad mini in my livestream studio.
      But yes, a little strange that it's working for a few minutes and then failing. And you're right - if you literally just installed it today you're definitely up-to-date. Haha - sorry, wasn't sure if you've had it installed for a while but finally set it up later.

      @@matthewTobrien I got the error fixed, it was that I had another shortcut keystroke using the same command apparently. But I also just downloaded Touch Portal that many recommended in video about Stream deck and I have to say it is quite amazing, installed it yesterday and with 30-40 minutes had it up and running so I bought it right away bc it is a one time fee of 12.99 instead of the yearly subscription fee from stream deck and even the free version gives you more icon options... I love it it!! You might want to check it out also..

  • @bwilesuk
    @bwilesuk 3 роки тому +1

    Nice demo. I’m disappointed it’s a subscription though. I’d have bought it out right but $2.99/£2.99 is at least justifiable, I’d consider it for having separate audio and video switching for multicam. For most keyboard shortcuts though I just use my left hand so don’t seek to have the same problem, I only use my right hand on the number pad mostly 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 роки тому

      Yup, me too! A few of those shortcuts on the right side work for me on SD Mobile. I think the ultimate goal for a lot of editors is to not really use a mouse or trackpad much at all and just operate from the keyboard entirely. I find in the stage where I’m editing down vlogs and interviews that I’m constantly using the trackpad to navigate. Thanks for tuning in, Ben!

    • @matthewTobrien

      Absolutely! The only real customizing you can do is to enable three-finger drag. Otherwise you'd have to look at third party software like Better Touch Tool to do things beyond what macOS allows. But all of the gestures supported in Final Cut Pro work on the Magic Trackpad 2 as well as the trackpad on MacBooks.
