I got a stream deck recently and I’ve never been happier Editing is easier, streaming is easier, photo editing is beautiful; it’s just such an amazing quality of life thing and I’m so glad I bought it
1 - I love you! 2 - For folks who don't have a Stream Deck, you can still just remap all the functions you use most often (I personally set my keybinds to where my hands never have to move. Right hand stays on the mouse for EVERYTHING, left had doesn't move either) 3 - I'm into mechanical keyboards, so I built a custom macropad (with 3 rotary encoders (read: knobs) for volume, zoom, and pan) and that served a similar purpose too!
1. Thank you! 😁 2. Super smart- I know there's a lot to be done with keyboard mapping that I haven't explored yet. 3. That sounds awesome and super fun to click 🤓
I know exactly what you talking about. My Streamdeck has been sitting in its box for over a year, unused. Seeing your video has inspired me to crack it open. It looks like a real time saver. Thank you, Tom. Cheers, Ian.
I just ordered one through your link. I had been contemplating one for some time but your video certainly made a strong case for pulling the trigger. On a related, but unrelated note, your presentations are exceptional, allowing all of us to "visit" with you and get to know you in each video. Just incredible. Thank you.
Tom I’ve never seen in many months another film editor that uses and coordinates colors better than you do! Absolutely stunning Tom! Great info on SteamDeck as well! Thanks!
WOW! Thank you for that! It means a lot to hear and I really appreciate it! I'm not entirely sure how everything came together, but I'm happy with the results! 😁
okay... some times it's the little things in a video is a game changer for me... the whole time, I never knew that there was a "Blade All" function in Final Cut. lol. I just never thought to look. I was always cutting each individual layer. In my defense, I rarely have layered videos in my editing. Also, thanks for pointing out the Audio Device plugin. Even my 6 button Streamdeck mini has become that much more useful. Keep up the great work as usual.
This video had perfect timing! I just picked up a stream deck and we’re seriously working through adding buttons for final cut pro last night. Great video Tom, also thanks for the introduction to Mr.CameraJunkie’s Channel. Thanks for the video Tom
This is a cool tutorial for the Elgato stream deck. I have considered upgrading to a Atem in the future. Too many cool stream decks now a days. Awesome Job Tom!
The ATEM and the Stream Deck really serve two different roles, so there can definitely be room for both in a workflow. My favorite thing about the Stream Deck is how versatile it is while still being pretty darn affordable.
I have been loving my stream deck. It has saved me soooo much time! I set it up a bit different. I used folders for each program instead of profiles. Overall same concept. Thanks for the video.
Your lighting game just keeps getting better and more refined over each month, it's amazing to notice the small, incremental improvements over your UA-cam collection 🔥
ThankYou Tom. You just gave me the best lesson I ever got about the use of Streamdeck as a “sidekick” to me when I’m editing with FCPX. Keep swingin’ man and lot of hugs from Lennart Solna Sweden.
I humbly too recommend this size of Stream Deck over the other options. The small size makes it a focused tool and not an additional maxed out interface. Unless a maxed out interface is what one needs 😁
Once I discovered folders/profiles this size was more than enough. My wife has the giant one though and she totally loves it, so different strokes for different folks I guess 🤷🏻♂️
Really great video! I've been treating my stream deck the same....uhh.....I haven't been using it much. I'll check out your bud's channel for the deep-dive. Thanks for doing this!
Been using one for years, and for much more than FCPX. When I want to record, I have one key that sets everything up for me, turns on lights, adjusts windows on my computer, enables DND, and more. The power is in running more that one thing in a button press.
Terrific video, Tom, thank you. Just got mine last night, and haven’t stopped learning on it yet. I love it. I wish there was a site that had pre made plug ins besides just their own site!
I have a stream deck, I almost never use my stream deck. After this video I think it’s time to plug it back in and give it a go again. Thanks Tom!!! (and Luis) 😀👊🏻
Hey Tom, just found this vid because I'm looking into Stream decks a bit. For editing in final cut, have you tried the Tourbox Neo? I've been using that for some time now and it's really good! Basically I have one hand on my Mx master 2 and one on the Tourbox, hardly ever use the keyboard now.
Ooh sounds neat! I’ve tried a few other things, but nothing has ever been as simple as the stream deck for me. It usually ends up just sitting in a drawer until I give it away 😬
I finally bought the Stream Deck because of this video :) Question, if I may ask please? Can you share ideas please on how to clean the Rode Procaster's silver part/the grill?
I always just use a slightly damp microfiber cloth for cleaning things like that. I know that the mesh parts can discolor over time, but I haven't tried "restoring" it yet.
I've been putting off getting one of these stream decks because I felt that it wouldn't add much to my workflow. I'm starting to see where it could make difference and I may actually get one now to experiment. Not so much for editing, but for setting up everything for recording.
Tom, as usual, FABO content. I'm thinking of switching over to Final Cut Pro. It's a 4 gig lift for the hard drive. Do you recommend downloading to an external SSD hard drive or the laptop/desktop? Keep the content coming! bill powers - Charlotte NC
Hey! Thanks for all the kind words and support! I think Final Cut Pro works best when it's installed directly on your hard drive. Depending on the speed of an external drive though, you might be able to keep your editing libraries and project files there so they don't take up space on your computer.
Yet another reason I regret not going mac. This looks really cool and professional. I use an old version of power director to edit. What's the best windows editing program would you recommend?
I would recommend Davinci Resolve! There's a free version that's super capable, and if you like it, the full license is pretty affordable. Plus it's Mac/PC compatible, so if you ever switch platforms in the future, you can use the same software.
Thanks Tom for an amazingly helpful video. Do you know if there is a way to add a specific effects preset (such as zoom to 130%, adjust position X and Y to a given. value, etc.) I know I can create an effects preset in FCP, but I've yet to figure out a way to map a specific effects preset to a Stream Deck key. Thanks in advance!
This is a really good question, but I'm not 100% sure how to do it. I do usually just have a preset for the type of crop in you're describing, but I never thought about mapping that to the Stream Deck!
I actually don't use my Stream Deck with Final Cut Pro.... YET! Book marking this video for later... or I guess I could just ask you to show me in person LOL. GREAT VIDEO BABEEEEEE 💜
I almost did not recognize this is a Tom Buck video because it was missing the puns. I never really thought I would ever need a stream deck until seeing the other uses you get out of it here. We use one for live streams at church but it basically just replaces mouse click actions. I've got so many ideas of how I can use this in photoshop, lightroom, and Final Cut as well. I also write and edit copy every day and there are certain strings of text or hard to spell names I have to use often. I was using text expander for that, but I often forget the shortcuts I set, so I'm thinking I could utilize a streamdeck for that as well.
Hello Tom - I'm interested in learning something else since you've always been very helpful with my questions, for example when I work on my vids on FCP and I have a section on the video where I apply my channel name and social media links along with a sound effect; how do I save that as a template for my future videos instead of having to always create it on new vids? I hope I was able to clarify my question?
Hey Rudy! The easiest way to do that is to make the graphic its own separate movie. You can export a ProRess 444 file form Final Cut to keep a transparent background (it'll be a big file though) and then you can add that movie wherever you need the graphics.
Hi Tom, I'm an old Italian dude, I bought the new Elgato stream deck + and tried to customize it for Final Cut Pro. I tried to follow your video, that I really found useful in general. As usual i followed step by step what you were explaining, and I tried to repeat on may deck, but I couldn't match Final Cut with the steam deck, because there was no answer with the software and the button(?). Is there something I've missed through the steps? Or is there something more to set: the stream deck and Final Cut? Thank you fro your reply.
not disregarding the streamdeck because I plan on getting one but for the zoom in / zoom out, since your hand is already on the trackpad, can't you pinch in or out to zoom in or out?
I don't usually use a trackpad, but yes you could. I'm a huge fan of the physical buttons since they make it easier to work without taking my eyes off the screen 👍
Great video! I just got a Stream Deck XL, and have just a few FCP hotkeys set up. One disappointment so far, and I think it is a FCP limitation, is that I cannot hotkey apply a custom effect. I have a variety of custom video and audio effects in FCP that I use frequently, but I can't apply them with a hotkey. Anyone have a solution to that? Thanks!
@@kenny1463 Thanks for the tip! I'm trying CommandPost (CP), but it can't be used at the same time as the Stream Deck app. I could map everything for every app within CP, but the interface is rather clunky - no drag to rearrange, for instance. I think I would give up some great Stream Deck functionality if I did this. For now, I have turned off the Stream Deck connection within CP. But the CP HUD feature may be the answer I was looking for. I can hotkey that on/off with the Stream Deck (in their app). That gives me the CP HUD within FCP, and it is there I can map all my custom effects for one-button selection. I have to use my mouse to do that, but it is much faster than searching my effects. Yep! You can either right click on your project and duplicate it, then remove the clips you don't need. Or select and copy the clips you want to move, create a new project, and then paste them into the timeline. 👍
I have one question: you are multicam-recording but are looking the whole time only into the main cam. When you cut to the second cam without switching your sight I feel as a second class participant. Why don‘t you always look into the cam the will be later on the active cam?
Can you please suggest what a yellow triangle with an exclamation error icon may mean? I'm using macOS 12.5.1with a 15-key Stream Deck. I appreciate your help. Thank you.
I've never seen the yellow triangle myself, but doing a quick search shows that some people have reported it. It seems like a bug/issue of some kind with no clear solution. If the Stream Deck was working well before, then it might be worth uninstalling/re-installing the software to see if that helps.
Thank you for the fast reply. I checked. User (me) error. I had assumed that assigned icons on hot keys created actionable FCP buttons on the stream deck. I didn’t realize, that in addition to the FCP icons, I also needed to type in the key strokes. Initially, I thought key strokes were to modify, enhance, or change icon functionality.
@@tombuck Thank you. I'm testing it on my Mac Mini right now. What I like is that you can almost use it as if you were using a gaming controller. But at least in my case the connection does not seem to be the most stable/fluid although I only read good things from others.

I haven’t used it personally, but I know lots of people love it. I really prefer the the physical buttons of the regular device.
Hello, Congratulations 👍 Cool
Ah… mine is on the desk still but unused as it’s only configured to launch apps and… who needs a stream deck for that… I shall revisit, thanks Tom 👍
It’s wild how mine went from completely unused to critical tool with just a few changes. I love it.
so now I need to get a StreamDeck and a ATEM Mini Extreme
**searches in the couch cushions**
Don’t forget old soda cans! 😬
Ola! Where can i find your drum stream?
I had to enlist it do to an excessive amount of copyright claims 😁
@@tombuck Ah too bad - would have loved to have a look at it :)
Stream Deck? More like Dream Deck amirite? 🤪
Ba dumm tshh 🥁
LOL 😂
how can I do BLADE ALL as a hot key????? It won't let me do it
You can create a hot key that triggers shift+command+b 👍
very nice Tom Buck!
(you know me ?)
I do!
I have one question: you are multicam-recording but are looking the whole time only into the main cam. When you cut to the second cam without switching your sight I feel as a second class participant. Why don‘t you always look into the cam the will be later on the active cam?
It’s a personal preference and allows for more flexibility while editing. I like the “behind the scenes” look.
Initially, I thought key strokes were to modify, enhance, or change icon functionality.
is it possible to click with the stream deck vs the mouse?
I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

This one or Tourbox? :)
I'm not familiar with Tourbox, but the elgato software is so simple and easy that it's tough to beat.
@@tombuck Thank you. I'm testing it on my Mac Mini right now. What I like is that you can almost use it as if you were using a gaming controller. But at least in my case the connection does not seem to be the most stable/fluid although I only read good things from others.
No pun in the cold open? Who got to you...
It’s in there 😉
how to stream deck can make final cut pro pro ...instead of better..
