Those red lines on Machoke are stretch marks... Stretch marks are soft tissue (skin in this case), where the soft tissue expands too quickly (due to muscle growth, fat gain, pregnancy, etc…), and then tightens again after stretching out. An example to visualize the concept of stretch marking; imagine blowing a balloon to a really large size, but before popping it, you let all the air out. The air filling up the balloon stretches the rubber, and if you observe the deflated balloon, it has ripples in it after trying to mimic its original shape prior to stretching out, which are essentially “stretch marks” resembling the scars in skin after pregnancy, weight loss, or rapid muscle growth. In the case of Machoke; Machop, it’s pre-evolution, has small muscles. Machoke gains a lot of muscle quickly when it evolves (since evolution happens at an instant) which gives the Pokémon stretch marks as this muscle hypothetically grows at the time it levels up and evolves, and then by the time Machoke eventually evolves in a trade, the stretch marks heal and fade when it evolves into Machamp. Another story all together, but the energy it takes to evolve probably is what heals the, now, Machamp’s scars. As it only heals once it evolves. Much like how Caterpie “evolves” into a cocoon Pokémon, Metapod, and then blossoms into a butterfly, Butterfree, but changes physically or molts said cocoon during evolution only in the same way a Pokémon could heal from its “design” injuries during evolution.
59:00 I believe the “Unobtainable Arceus” point is referring to the Arceus you were supposed to encounter when using the Azure Flute (before the distribution of the item was cancelled). If you hack the Azure Flute into the game, it’s still fully functional and lets you catch a Level 70 Arceus, so it was probably taking about that.
There is a theory that fossil Pokemon have all had their secondary types replaced with rock because they were fossilized, meaning that before Kabutop and Kabutops went through the fossilization/resurrection process they had a good chance of being water-bug types. Genesect being revived by a different method may have meant it kept the other type.
Kabuto is a trilobite which is a ocean rolly-polly/pill-bug, so this makes sense. Maybe Genesect is what happens when you unfossilize a full sized Kabutops instead of the unevolved Kabuto when you use evil mechagodzilla tech?
When it comes to the "Raichu evolved" text, you have to remember that the English Red and Blue games are based on Japanese Pokemon Blue which was basically a patched version of Japanese Red and Green. In Japanese Red/Green you trade Raichu for Electrode, but in Japanese Blue you trade away a Kadabra (which is a trade evolution.) In the US release of the game, they keep the Red/Green trade requirement, but use the Blue version text that reads "Your (Pokemon) went and evolved."
I love how most Pokégods look either like Pokémon that could exist or are photoshopped/reskins of existing Pokémon and then Flareth is literally just Ridley from Metroid
30:50 the idea of normal animals existing in the pokemon universe is more of an early idea in the series that ended up being retconned. In gen 1 and 2 (especially gen 1) it is heavily implied that pokemon are a new discovery and turns out theyve existed for a long time. In gen 2 the idea of normal animals existing still exists, its just a tad more downplayed. Gen 3, in more ways then one, was considered a soft reboot of sorts for the setting, and by gen 3 its pretty much confirmed that animals dont exist in the pokemon world. The idea of animals existing in the pokemon world is also illustrated in the early seasons of the pokemon anime and trading cards. Again, it isnt till around gen 3 is it confirmed pokemon are the animals of this universe.
Multiverse theory at work… But in all seriousness, if you put wild animals into a world and then introduced wild animals that can breathe fire or generate massive electric shocks and ALSO have human level or higher intelligence, you can bet the normal animals aren’t going to survive very long.
Dude, I love the little story in the beginning. My Dad would always bring home a new Dragon Ball Z VHS whenever there was a new one at Walmart at the time. It was a great time guessing which day he’d bring one home.
It's worth noting that the original Pokémon beta does have an unused backsprite for an evolved Marowak who carries a Cubone in the pouch. So there is definitely something to that Cubone and Kangaskhan theory.
I think that sort of debunks the kangaskhan theory, because kangaskhan was one of the first pokemon created, it's index #2 in the files of red + blue. So it seems extremely likely to me that Kangaskhan and the Marowak evolution co-existed during development
@@bewill5121, one of the glitch Pokémon evolves into Kangaskhan. And there's enough evidence to suggest it was an idea at some point in development. Rhydon was the first Pokémon ever made and it has a pre-evolved form, so it doesn't matter when the Pokémon were developed.
Glitch pokemon evolving into normal pokemon doesn't mean anything. Glitch pokemon are the game reading different unrelated code as if they're pokemon, which is why the sprites, stats and movepools seem so random, but at the same time you notice a lot of recurring moves in the movepools, because some instructions and pieces of data are a lot more common in programming than others. The fact that there's a glitch pokemon that's very similar to Gengar but with access to Spore certainly does not mean Gengar was ever planned to have Spore. I'm not sure what rhyhorn has to do with anything either. I guess it does make sense that they could have made kanga as a marowak evolution, scrapped that and made kanga standalone, then scrapped the marowak evolution
@@bewill5121it's not unrelated code though, it pulls from Pokémon that aren't there, from ID 152(after mew) to 256. It's part of the same reason some missing no can be transferred to Gen 2 and turn into a proper Gen 2 pokemon
@@Skoldpadden it is very much unrelated code. The area in memory after the pokemon that do exist wasn't left unused, it's used for other parts of the game. some of the glitch pokemon even start to take their data from RAM, meaning their levelup learnsets, evolutions, etc are determined by data you can change, which is certainly not something ever intended by the game developers for any pokemon.
19:00 I love that scene, because of the context: Diglett got rescued by you, after getting lost on Steel Mountain, and after defeating the boss, Skarmony, who didn't let Diglett go or something, you realize that you cant get Diglett across a cliff seperated you and Diglett. So, the Megnetmites you helped earlier carry it across the cliff. It skips to your base (see timestamp), and after Diglett states that "It's feet still feel like there walking on air", your partner says "(Feet...?)", and the Magnemites say "(FEET? HE HAS THEM?)", as if they didnt carry that thing in the air just now
The concept of cubone not evolving into kangaskan can be easily explained. Look to examples such as slowpoke. Where the introduction of an item can change its evolution line. The skull could act as a item for a specific evolution.
About the genesect being kabutops, there is a separate theory that makes this one even more viable. It says that fossil Pokémon are part rock because of a flaw in the resurrection process, and like you said, genesect would be part steel because of the plating Team Plasma gave it. So assuming both Pokémon got one of their types over written, it’s plausible that the original Pokémon both are based of was a bug/water type.
@@MichaelSotoCE I mean, Kabutops is based off of a species that's loosely related to lobsters & trilobytes, which are basically ocean insects, so Genesect being bug/steel still makes sense for this theory.
I love how you set the scene at the beginning of your iceberg videos as to what it was like when the game was released and what your experience was. It frames everything in a more interesting context.
There's actually another connection between the Eeveelutions and the gen 2 legendary trio that probably solidified the theory for a good number of fans. Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon's normal abilities are Water Absorb, Volt Absorb, and Flash Fire respectively. In Gen 5 and 6, Suicune, Raikou, and Entei respectively had these same abilities as their Hidden Abilities in the game's code. However, these Hidden Abilities were never made available for the legendary trio, and when the trio did gain access to Hidden Abilities in Gen 7 they were retconned to all have Inner Focus. It really feels as if GameFreak often includes deeper lore implications only to snuff them out later, as they adamantly denied the Ditto/Mew connection a few years ago despite the enormous number of similarities between the two that are too many to be coincidental. The Gen 2 legendary trio having their hidden abilities retconned feels like another Ditto/Mew denial from the devs, given that.
@@kingofcrap4414 tbf to them, it might be because Nintendo wants their game to be super kid friendly, as evidenced by the Conker thing being removed. I can't imagine Nintendo would like the idea of three popular Pokémon burning to death, so would rather it remain ambiguous. Does suck though.
Or they include vague stuff and don't elaborate to keep us talking. This series was born on the pre internet cafeteria table, and rumors were among the biggest part of that. Gotta keep them alive somehow
For hall of origin it's because they believed it would have been too *confusing* for players to do. Yeah because catching the Regis in gen 3 was laid out super clearly
@@amwolfmusic I just asked my dad what it was and he was like "Oh that's braille". Then I went to my school library the next day to google it. Braille is pretty much common knowledge for adults.
But yeah if you and all of your friends and family didn't know what braille was, you had no internet access, didn't have the instruction booklet, and your school didn't have a library, I guess you'd have trouble.
Regarding Lavender Town and the tower being a cemetery, cremation is incredibly common in Japan, and I would guess that the tower is supposed to be similar to a pagoda.
@@secredeath yeah man. If you disregard her interesting opinions and opt for the “yeah I guess whatever tf you just said, can we fuck now?” That’ll really get any woman to fall for you lol
here’s an interesting fact on white hand that you missed: it was mentioned in the pokémon origins anime, and it actually shows up on a character’s shoulder when it is, if you look closely.
"But they help me learn that Pidgey evolves to Pidgeotto at level 18. It learns Whirlwind at level 21, Wing Attack at level 31 and that as its level rises it learns various tricks. After evolving to Pidgeot it can fly at 1200 metres at speeds of up to Mach 2." This is said by a character named Joe in season 1 episode 9, School of hard knocks. There is also a couple more mentions about leveling Pokémon in this episode.
On Blue's Raticate: I don't think it's dead. Blue's determined to have the strongest team possible and may have felt like Raticate was falling behind a little. My theory is he either released it or (my favorite) sent it back home to live with his sister or Professor Oak. The thing that always throws me off is Blue appearing in the Pokemon Tower, though... still working on an explanation for that.
Yeah, I've always found the theory goofy because why in the WORLD would he be so playfully competitive if you KILLED HIS POKEMON? Also, i've played countless Romhacks of FireRed at this point because it's the most common base used for ROMhacks and many of these don't change the dialog. Maybe it's different in the originals, but at least in the remakes, he never asks if your Pokémon is dead or if you've ever lost a Pokémon. He says "Hey, what are you doing here? Your Pokémon don't look dead! I can make them faint at least!" Your theory also would fit for the actual reason. I mean, at the end of the game, Oak admonishes him for not loving his Pokémon enough. I always thought that was kinda weird since other than saying "I picked the wrong one!" when he loses the first battle, he doesn't really SEEM to have any dialog implying he's mean to or doesn't love his Pokémon. If we assume he's ditching Pokémon because they aren't good enough to beat you, then that viewpoint makes more sense.
I like the "three eevee burnt in the tower and ho-oh revived them and gave them the powers of their evolutions" theory more (im also pretty sure the beasts and eeveelutions share an ability (i think its the eeveelutions hidden one))
A few theories that weren't on the iceberg but stood out to me: Mossdeep Space Center rocket launches: In the Mossdeep Space Center in R/S/E, there's a scientist that states the number of successful launches they've had. Apparently, this is just the number of real-life weeks since you started the game. However, I heard a lot of rumors that these were actually counting the number of your victories against the Elite Four, and that once the number of launches got to 100, you could ride a rocket into space and fight Deoxys. Coincidentally, this is also pretty much the same concept behind the Delta Episode in OR/AS (just replace the rocket with Rayquaza), so I wonder if the developers were aware of this rumor like with the Mew truck thing. Akala Island golf course: This one is mostly notable to me because it's a theory for the one of the newer games, which aren't quite as common. In Sun and Moon, there are multiple Golfer NPCs, and Kahili of the Elite Four is a golfer. There's also a golf course on Akala Island displayed on the in-game minimap and the official illustration, but you never get to go there. This, plus some unused content in the game files, has some people wondering if the golf course was planned to be an accessible area during development, but got scrapped for whatever reason.
Yup. I heard the rocket would take you to the moon, where you could catch both Deoxys and Jirachi. Gotta love playground rumors. I still remember the feeling of disappointment when I finally got to 100 launches and nothing happened.
I don’t understand why entries like The Lavender Town Syndrome, Pokemon Lost Silver, and Buried Alive are so far down, I thought they were pretty well known creepy pastas that a bunch of people knew. I think I was just expecting something really mysterious, weird, and obscure that hardly anyone knew. Idk maybe these creepy pastas aren’t very well known and they deserve to be that far down and I’m just a Pokémon fan that spends too much time looking at Pokémon stuff. I think another part is that Pokémon is MASSIVE and I was thinking it would get something on the same level at Every Copy of Mario 64 is Personalized but that’s perhaps one of the most well known things about Mario 64 so Idk maybe the Mario 64 iceberg has spoiled me.
yeah I'm not really sure what that's all about. I don't make any of the icebergs I discuss, otherwise I would certainly keep creepypastas around the top couple layers, but that's just me.
These creepypastas were pretty lame to in my opinion, but I was hoping to see some things on the top like the obscure truck and what not. Whoever makes these icebergs are quite the unique souls.
About lavender town's tower, it's based in japanese budhist memorial stones. Since most japanese ppl are cremated and it's quite odd to bury people after they're dead
@@idk-ov9oh if cremation is more common then buring is odd. However, it is odder to bury someone before they die than after they are dead. Was a throwaway comment for a bit of fun tbh
Not sure if I missed them during the video, but here are two gems from Pokémon Stadium: 1. If you use a Pokémon with a nickname (usually a variation of their name, i.e. AlAkAzAM, Pikachoo, etc.) they’ll appear with different sprites that differ from even their own shiny forms. 2. Similar to the Yoshi one - there was a popular “Tips/Cheat Codes” magazine that stated that in Stadium 2, if you defeat the Gym Leaders + Elite Four/Champion using only Typhlosion and Lugia, you would then be able to battle + capture Mew.
I must have missed the explanation to PokeRus in game when I was a kid ( I owned Gold Version). I just randomly noticed that some of my pokemon were infected at some point. I immediately quarantined them in a box in the PC. I meticulously scanned my entire collection for it.. I was TERRIFIED by it. I had no clue what that meant. Was it detrimental? Were their file corrupted? This was before the internet was what it is today. I grew up poor so I had no access to it. Didn't find out for YEARS what it meant.
Pokerus is so weird to me. It feels like one of those obviously fake playground rumors. Like, it's a super rare virus that is beneficial to your pokemon, and then disappears quickly. It's even rarer than a shiny pokemon. Just, why?
I think it happened to me too, but now I'm doubting my own memory. I did play a lot of hours of pokemon. I remember being scared my pokemon would die but then nothing happened and I forgot about it, lol.
First pokemon ever designed: rydon first pokemon to exist in the universe: arceus First pokemon in the pokedex: bulbasaur First pokemon to apear in the anime intro: mew
@@slaps1455 the pokedex entry isnt even where that info comes form, its literally the plotline of the first pokemon movie, mew didnt appear officially in games till gen 2, there wasnt even a #151 in the dex in r/b/y mew is the ancestor of all modern pokemon, and Giovanni wanted to create the ultimate pokemon by cloning mew
This tidbit is probably Iceberg worthy if it wasn't common knowledge now (like Pikablu = Marill). I remember reading in an old gaming magazine under a "secrets/tips" like section where it explained in Victory Road in Gold/Silver there was a "silver" or a light colored Rhyhorn wandering in the area. I read this back then and booted up my Silver copy and spent an hour or so going all over Victory Road and saw nothing, just ordinary Rhyhorn. Many years later, I would remember that article and thought how maybe what it was referring to was probably a shiny Rhyhorn the writer must've encountered during their playthrough. However, I have since then lost the magazine so I wasn't able to recall if it was referring to a Rhyhorn or Rhydon, because I know Rhydon's are light colored when shiny while Rhyhorns are reddish/copper colored. It could've also been in Crystal as Rhydon don't appear in G/S in Victory Road, but they do in Crystal. Hazy memory aside, I do remember that article and how it was very most likely about a shiny Rhydon encounter and how the writers thought it was some scripted rare encounter like Raikou or Suicune. Little info like that, while incorrect, was just so fun back then.
If that's the case then I feel bad for the writer thinking that it's a normal occurrence and not being told otherwise because there are editors so that must suck, also many kids were probably tricked lol.
I have kind of a similar memory (not about Rhyhorn/Rhydon, but something similar). I thought I remembered reading in a magazine as a kid that, in Crystal, you could only catch Suicune without a Master Ball if your character was a girl, and you could only catch Entei (or maybe Raikou?) if you were a boy. That obviously isn't true, but I remember believing it back in the day because I was playing as a boy and could never catch Suicune, despite catching the other legendaries, and I could've sworn I read that somewhere.
@@dood3530 Sexist pokemon?! Lol, that is strange. Given how relatively difficult it was to find and catch them, I'd believe it. I remember back then I figured out the (now commonly used) method of tracking the Roamers on your Dex and moving between two short routes to make them move along the map for an encounter. The Roamer encounter music also always scared the crap out of me since it started on a very high note and that's usually the sound when a Gameboy game crashes. XD Good times.
24:30 The '???' type also appears when a pure Fire type uses the move Burn Up, and is still present in the games, at least in Sw/Sh. This has actually led to some really interesting battle strategies, such as giving your pure Fire type Wonder Guard, making them immune to every move after they use Burn Up.
Actually no, since generation 5 '???' is truly gone, burn up makes the pokemon typeless, which might have the same effectiveness (being neutral all), but isn't the same thing, you can check Bulbapedia for more information
man, i wish i could have been alive to experience pokemania.. i was born during the tail end of pokemania. when i was in middle school obsessing over pokemon during the gen 6 era it was only popular within my small group of friends. everyone else thought we were weird for being so into it. the pokémon go craze was a thing, but it only lasted a month and i wasn’t even super into pokémon go. i would have killed to live thru a time period where everyone was as excited about pokémon as i was
Sorry you missed out, man. I'd rather experience missing out by being born late than what I went through. I was 5 when Red and Blue came out and every kid at school was into it. I didn't live close enough to anywhere that held events and money and time were a typical issue for my parents, so I could never go and experience all that and get special Pokémon and get the tickets for in game events. Had to see all these kids come to school and show off that they got the new Pokémon and were able to complete their Pokédexes. And I could never get anyone to trade with me so I could acquire trade evolutions.
I remember getting to Mirage Island thinking I could get a secret legendary but it was nothing. Ended up leaving and then never found it again. Glad to know it's a real thing and not a dream
I don't think Looker is a Dr. Who reference. If he's a reference to anyone it's probably Zenigata from Lupin III, but since there's never been a direct Lupin analogue, even that's a bit of a stretch.
Another point in favor of the legendary beasts previously being eeveelutions is that the 3 sages who test you in Crystal, before you fight/catch Suicune, use specifically Vaporeon, Flareon and Jolteon (each sage has one of them)
Also in gen 5 Vaporeon, Flareon, and Jolteon have the same hidden abilities as the three legendary beasts, but the latter's hidden abilities were changed from gen 6 onwards!
5:20 maybe the truck is there because of a “if i get rid of this one asset i don’t need the entire game crashes” kind of situation that happens sometimes lmao. at least that’s a practical explanation for why it was 1. in a place most people are unable to access and 2. the only use of that specific asset (as far as i know)
Actually, the reason Mew and Ditto might share shiny colors is that shinies in Gen 2 relied on a simple positional palette swap from one palette in a giant list to another, without considering for bespoke shiny forms.
Quick correction for 26:18, the Pokemon listed were likely never meant for Gen 1 at all. MissingNo only turns into those Gen 2 Pokemon because Gen 2 reuses part of Gen 1's indexing format, and to save space, those MissingNo slots were replaced with actual Pokemon. Gen 1 however did actually cut a few Pokemon out which made it into early builds of Gen 2 (Including the Spaceworld demo), such as a line of electric tigers meant to be a counterpart to Rapidash and Seaking's lines, and a Vulpix pre-evolution. However, any cut Pokemon from Gen 1 that was transferred to Gen 2 also was unfortunately cut there. The farthest some of them ever got, that we know of at least, were early 1999 prototypes. (EDIT): Back in 2019, Gen 1's original index, along with tons of other early assets dating back to 1990 were leaked by an anonymous collector, and given to a team of Pokemon archivists called Helix Chamber. (This collector may or may not have also been behind the gigaleak last year, which leaked tons of N64 and SNES assets.) Basically, we have a pretty good understanding of what was cut from Gen 1.
In addition, it's been proven that Lugia was created specifically for the anime, and Teddiursa is a repurposed Honoguma. So both of them were designed well after Red and Green were already released.
Great iceberg video! I remember finding mirage island as a kid and thinking nothing of it. I do remember being pleasantly surprised by the wild wynaut, as they were nowhere else in the game, except through breeding. Later I'd go back in subsequent playthroughs and never found it again. I thought I'd just imagined the whole thing until my teens when I found out about its rarity. Pokemon easter eggs are so quirky and fun.
They didn't even choke on it Apparently it got suck on their mouths and nose and somehow that killed an infant... A) How the actual fuck did it get stuck on their mouth AND nose?! B) You didn't do shit to... I don't know... PULL IT OFF?!
i can see how a plastic pokeball can get stuck over a baby's mouth and nose if the baby started trying to suck on it (bc that's what infants do with unfamiliar objects), but you'd think that someone would've gone "hey, maybe we shouldn't give this small hard plastic object to the baby because it could suffocate itself" before it actually happens. like, it's common damn sense. don't give babies choking hazards, and especially don't leave them alone with them. also i looked it up and this even happened three times. first being the one referred to where the pokeball was in an unattended baby's playpen, second where a parent was there to stop their toddler from dying when it happened, and the third when someone had the genius idea of putting half a pokeball in a 4-month-old's crib
@@juiceecads3894 and my absolute favorite part is the parents don't think "oh shit I really fucked up" they think "CLEARLY THIS TOY WAS DESIGNED TO KILL MY CHILD I'M SUING"
Like, did they just toss their newborn a few random fast food toys and leave the room? I honestly cannot think of another way this scenario could have played out that makes them not be terrible parents There's a reason why they make toys specifically made for babies, you don't go out buying digimon for a two month old
The lighthouse Dragonite was one of my first memories of being terrified. I think the mist, music and those eerie calls/cries are what really did me in, but the massive shadow with glowing eyes didn’t help.
Pokemon levels were mentioned and shown in the animated couple times. The immediate ones that pops in my head is the Scizor trainer that Ash battled using his Heracross. He had a laptop that he was using in order to figure out a Pokemon's level and determine what attacks to use. Then in the first season at the Pokemon Academy the kid that was being forced to run on a treadmill and talk about Pidgey showed Misty Ash and Brock their training room using arcade games to simulate gym battles. These simulation arcade games if you paid close enough attention to notice were actually Pokemon Red and Blue
All I can imagine is that they managed to get the clip off and put it in their mouth. There is a suffocation hazard, and at least one of the halves has no holes in it and could cover both the mouth and nose
By the time cubone evolves into marrowack, the skull is fused to the scalp and is preventing the head from growing. Thus preventing the evolution from occurring.
Another very obscure fact that could have its place in the bottom section of the iceberg concerns some trainers’ names in the French versions of gen 5 and 7 (mostly) games. It seems that a member of the localisation team is a big fan of the parodic soap opera « Le Coeur A Ses Raisons », and named NPCs after characters of said soap. The most blatant example is that rich family from Undella Town, featuring a Brenda, a Clifford, a Crystale and a Flatsy, which are all names you can find in the series.Crystale even quotes a line from her counterpart in thes games. Still in Gen 5, there’s a guy named Brett in the French version, whose trainer class is « Doctor », just like Brett Montgomery, the main character of « Le Coeur A Ses Raisons. A pair of swimmers named Crystale and Criquette can be found in Sun and Moon as well. Very niche and probably not interesting but still wanted to mention it
About the Cubone/Kangaskhan theory... There's many Pokemon who evolve into different Mons using alternative methods. Bellossom, Gallade, the Eevee line, Rhyperior, and Politoed for example, use different objects and stones to evolve, so why wouldn't the skull from the grieving baby Kangaskhan's mother influence it's evolution? Its mother's skull becomes a part of its identity, thus turning it into a Cubone, and further into a Marowak. I dunno, this is mostly just speculation on top of already proven evolution criteria, but I wouldn't completely sweep it under the rug.
1:16:42 If I recall correctly, In one of the early seasons, there's an episode where a young trainer is running on a treadmill while reciting the levels of which the caterpie(?) Line evolves. I don't remember the details, but I do know it's a thing
Yes! This is exactly what episode i was remembering! I think its the one with the school children. Definitely an early episode in season 1. Just looked, it's episode 9, titled "The School of Hard Knocks".
I remember having a VHS with this episode on it. I was going to comment about it before scrolling down. But, I did very distinctly remember the kid on the treadmill later being able to recall at which level Pidgey and Pidgeotto evolve, what level they learn a few moves, and I think he shares some information from one of their Pokedex entries about being able to fly at mach 2 or something.
The censored intro thing might be referring to the original opening theme scene where pikachu runs through a lass's legs and she embarassingly covers her skirt. I'm pretty sure this was censored in the west
@@TheSlipperyNUwUdle I think it was that the original lyrics translated (roughly) to "Through fire, through water, through grass, and even through that girl's legs"
Lt. Surge being 'saved' by 'electric' pokemon, might just refer to defibrillation? like he had a heart problem that needed remedying. I only point this out because the obvious reading of that line is that he used pokemon to fight in a war, but if we take what he said and put it in a new context, we can imagine another situation wherein only humans fought in some war, without pokmon. another theory that came to mind while writing this out, what if humans using pokemon at all was a recent development? not like yesterday or two days ago, but like a thousand years?
No, because in Lucario & The Mystery of Mew, it shows armored Pokémon marching into battle alongside humans. Also, X&Y exists, and the tapestries are pretty clear about Pokémon’s role in the great war

Unobtainable Arceus is there Because the original event for him was never released in dpp so you can only get it by hacking I'll comment later when I finish the vid Looking interesting so far
Lol yeah I did that kind of in response to the overwhelming comments I got on my Super Mario 64 personalization video insisting to me that it's not real, and like... I know... but I took a serious tone with it on purpose, because I thought it'd be boring to constantly keep talking about things as fictional, so, when I got to Lavender Town Syndrome, I just went full real with it because I think it'd be really funny for someone to comment telling that that Lavender Town Syndrome isn't real and that I'm dumb for thinking that it is, or trying to say that it really happened lol.
The "starter caught in grass outside Pallet town" refers to a VERY widespread rumor when Red and Blue came out that the starter pokemon could be caught in the grass inaccessible alongside Pallet Town. EVERY gaming "hints" website had an unverified "hint" that the other starter pokemon were here, and referred to it as "the field with the Charmanders". Because there was no oversight, the rumor would just persist.
theres a glitch where they actually have encounter rates there. so its not quite a rumor. mew will interestingly also have an encounter rate, though these caught pokemon are glitched, they dont always have the right values. sometimes they would get mixed with other pokemon in your inventory and take on their sprite and even some of their stats, but retain the name they originally had. so sometimes you might end up with a caterpie that has charmander stats.....but when attempting to transfer it to another game, the system acts like its not even a pokemon and cant be transferred
I'd like to point out that in Legends Arceus, it's explained that Pokemon can actually change their size based on energy. This not only explains the Anime's discrepancies, but it also explains the Pokemon inside of the Pokeballs mystery.
What's cool is this was a thing in Gen 1 too. According to an old hidden pokedex, a professor was messing with a Primeape to study how to calm it, and accidentally made it shrink into the size of a fetus, able to fit in a glasses case. Apparently that led to the production of pokeballs. So shrinking has always been a thing Pokémon could do for some reason.
You’re the best iceberg you tuber I’ve seen, you mentioning personal stories and stuff is entertaining, and when you say you’ll get to something later, you actually do.
Also fun fact about the gold cards, you can build an electrolysis machine at home for like a dollar and an old cell phone charger to just reverse the process used to bind the gold to the metal in the first place, so you will still have done your gold experiment AND a now non-gold plated collector edition metal poke plate XD
@1:34:57 There's actually a cool trick with that, you could trade the Pikachu from Yellow, level it up pass the gym level caps, and resend it back. Pikachu won't actually disobey your orders, however the bond system will be completely reset.
I like the game theory explanation that Blue just put the Raticate in his box. when you battle it on the SS Anne, it's a level lower than where it evolves, giving evidence that Blue is just catching Pokemon at random and using what's strongest
But they are fun theories about a fictional universe. Anything can be true. Never understood why people don't get that it's fictional. People can believe whatever they want. Hell, I would rather believe in some of those theories over real world ones like global warming, flat earth, religion or that politicians give a shit about anyone. If people want to believe we killed Blue's Raticate let them. No harm, no foul.
There should’ve been the old man from X and Y from the city with the giant Crystal where he asks you if he can take care of a low level Pokémon (from lvl. 1-5) after days passed and go back to his house, you your Pokémon in a poke ball that has your Pokémon and letter from him saying thank you, that the Pokémon you gave him gave him a happy life before dying
the fact you can find an Escape Rope hidden in his house does not help matters EDIT: my mistake, the Escape Rope is outside of the Gym not inside the house
Two theories I'd like to address: - Gary's Raticate: I believe this Raticate did not die due to injuries but because someone at Gamefreak knew that rats have an insanely short lifespan, with some species barely averaging 1 year. Considering it already evolved into a raticate it must not have been a young pokemon to begin with. We don't really get a frame of reference for how much time passes between each event but I can imagine the trip to Lavender Town for a 10 year old while training an army of critters takes some time. - Machoke's red lines: I believe these are either veins (like the Timbur line also has) or simply stretch marks from bulking up so much after evolving from a Machop (which kind of has pencil arms compared to its evolutions). I guess those would somehow have healed when Machoke evolves again (he sprouts two new frigging arms, healing a stretch mark wouldn't be that much of a stretch, pun very much intended)
Or he just boxed it because it was weak to him. Gary was probably in the tower looking for mr.fuji but couldn't get past the marrowak ghost cause he didn't have the silph scope.
Shout out to you for explaining the history of the Swastika, more awareness should be spread like you did. If we can get people in the west to once again see it as it originally was it would remove a powerful symbol for white supremacist, and allow ethnic minorities use an important symbol without fear of looking like a nazi.
Sadly the memories of Hitler and the holocaust, even now, are prevalent enough to prevent that. It's very possible that the swastika may not reacquire its original symbolism within our lifetime.
The Swastika appeared in Europe for the first time over 15000 years ago, and has been widely used by the majority of European cultures the past 2500 years. This nonsense idea that Hitler "stole" it from Hinduism would be laughable if the arrogance of the people who think they're clever for figuring out it appeared in Hindu cultures as well wasn't so smug, it was a European sun symbol first and foremost and this is why it got adopted by the NSDAP. And in European history, they always face the way the Nazis used them.
Sorry but sometimes there's no going back. A noble pursuit, sure, but the Swastika for all of its origins now just represents pure and unfetted evil. There is no changing that, I'm afraid...
Oh also, about the Smosh thing: Smosh uploaded a vid of Ian and Anthony lipsyncing the theme song in 2005, which was taken down due to copyright. In 2010 they made a parody of the theme song instead of a lip-sync making fun of the Pokemon copyright team to get back at them
57:14 the original Japanese opening for season one of the anime had a scene where pikachu ran in between a girl’s legs while the lyrics said something like “mysterious as whatever is hidden by a girl’s skirt”
That’s not quite how the lyrics went. The song starts off listing off a bunch of places they’d search for Pokémon (in fire, in water, in the grass, in forests, etc.), ending with “in that girl’s skirt.”
The real world animals are most likely more there to pad out the wildlife in earlier generations. With 151 pokemon, minus the legendaries, populating the eco system wasn't probably as easy as it is nowadays with over 800.

I'm around the same age as you, and I can remember VIVIDLY when pokémon blew up. I was in either 2nd or 3rd grade, and like the rest of my classmates I was smitten. My sister and I both were, she's only a year younger than me. I remember my mom taking us to this little hardware shop that also randomly sold pokémon cards (unrelated but beanie babies as well) and we'd each get a new package every other week. We started the initial first day of school after pokémon blew up with pokémon bookbags, lunch boxes, and thermoses. And then there was the first Christmas after pokémon blew up. It was literally the BEST. We got all sorts of pokémon related presents. I can still remember most of what we got in detail: - a complete pokedex book, which was a must have in a predominantly pre-internet era - pokémon apparel including long sleeve and short sleeve shirts, sweatpants, pajamas, hoodies/jackets and socks (I wish my mom would have saved those as much would likely still fit) - several packs of cards - gameboys with red and blue games - and both of our favorite, extra large and super soft plushes-Pikachu for her, Charmander for me. It wasn't long after the popularity exploded that our elementary school official banned bringing the cards to school. The hype was so all-encompassing that teachers constantly struggled with trying to get us all to focus. It was that big. And it happened seemingly overnight. It's still so crazy to me even now how insanely fast it happened, and without any form of social media to help the hype spread. It was organic and wild and I giggle when I think about how it must have looked to all the teachers and staff. We all definitely snuck our cards in our pockets and brought them to school anyways, lol. Super young to be so sneaky 😂 -
Not only does Abra’s Japanese name reference Edgar Cayce but Alakazam’s Japanese name, Foodin, references Houdini as well. The whole evolution line references famous magicians
The unobtainable Arcues probably refers to the Arceus event set in the fourth generation, where the event is coded into the game, in two different settings, but never officially released, making him 100% unobtainable by legit methods until later games

1:45:40 It's worth noting that the "white hand" NPC shows up in the Pokemon Origins anime short when Red visits the Lavender Town pokemon center. What's even more interesting about it is that there actually IS a faint white hand resting on Red's shoulder as he responds to their comment. Easy enough to see if you're looking for it, but something most are likely to miss the first time around if they aren't aware it's there.
I'm sure someone else has said this, but missingno turning into different pokemon when traded to later versions is likely a stack overflow. Basically, if you have a max ID count of 40, when an error occurs, it might get ID 41. Then, the second game, having a max ID count of 60, that error (with the ID of 41) will suddenly turn into whatever pokemon or item has the ID of 41.
26:19 The list of Pokémon you mention here is just an error handler list implemented in gen 2. Those Pokémon weren't actually meant to be in gen 1, but are what a gen 2 game shows when you attempt to trade a Missingno. from a gen 1 game. The actual Pokémon that got removed from gen 1 can be seen in an almost-complete gallery in the TCRF website, in the page detailing the technicalities of Missingno. Some of those Pokémon, like Meowth's and Ponyta's baby stages would later be considered for inclusion during gen 2 development (as they appeared in the Spaceworld 97 demo), but then they were cut again, and haven't reappeared ever since.
@@itstheman0nthem00n omastar could be water only or even water rock originally (shuckle is bug/rock because of it's shell as well), bur yes it's a pretty common theory that some fossils have one of their original types overwritten by rock or just added because theyre fossils. Lileep and cradily could easily be water/grass
1:38:58 Might be a stretch but FLAME type might be a reference to MOERU, which means Burning but also in the sense of Burning Passion or Enthusiasm, especially in the heroic sense. This MIGHT be one reason the fire/fighting type is popular with designers; it often implies the pokemon has a "heroic" personality. Especially contrasting with Dark type, which is straight up "Evil" in Japan. IMHO a fun twist on this is Incineroar, who has aspects of fire, fighting, AND dark, since he represents a "heel" wrestler who isn't actually mean.
For Kabutops and Genesect, Genesect wouldn't necessarily need to inherit Kabutops's Rock type as that is given to all fossil pokemon just for being from fossils. It could be that if they are upgrading an original Kabutops it could have been a bug water type back in the day giving Kabuto and Kabutops's Bug like appearance.
1:15:00 There are very few episodes in the anime that talk about levels, but in the 9th episode the character of the week, Gisele, beats Misty's Starmie with a Graveler, and mentions that Pokemon are only as good as their trainer, and being at a high level.
Regarding the mysterious lighthouse Dragonite from the anime episode, i read it somewhere that it was originally supposed to be Lugia, as it was one of the first Gen 2 mons to be conceived, but they scrapped the idea, maybe to save it for the movie, and substituted by a giant Dragonite as a stand in. It even makes sounds similar to Lugia's.
"Bubo virginianus" is the scientific name for a great horned owl, which i've always assumed is what Hoothoot/Noctowl were based on. I'm guessing that's what Bobo is named after
Marowak to Kangaskhan could be that the skull-mask eventually fuses into its head as it grows. Female Marowaks reach fertility at a relatively mature age, and become Kangaskhan as they develop their youngling. only fertility can evolve them. And once they die, their skull becomes a Cubone mask once again. You could say each Cubone skull has its own maternal lineage, while male male Marowak skulls go abandoned.
I can't remember if you battle N in B2W2, but I think the "N is Zoroark" theory is more for B2W2 than the originals. It's connected to another theory that the protagonist from BW were killed by Ghetsis, so they wouldn't interfere again. Same with N.
The unobtainable Arceus section refers to the fact that Arceus had been planned to be distributed through an event in the Sinnoh games, but was cut for unknown reasons. The full event is still implemented in the game and can be access through hacking, and Arceus can be caught within it. Even more crazy is if that same Arceus is transferred to the subsequent HGSS games and brought to the Ruins, you can trigger ANOTHER unused event which eventually leads to Arceus granting you a level 1 of one of his three children. It's probably on this iceberg because nobody really knows why they made these events inaccessible when they're so damn cool. Edit: just realized you mentioned the hall of origin event later in the iceberg, my bad! Still, thats very likely where the unobtainable arceus comes from. :]
Oh my god, thank you for clearing this up. Before I even read this comment, I knew that the skin breaking open theory was bs
Which is why I love him
Love that he has stretchmarks
I've always seen them as veins
59:00 I believe the “Unobtainable Arceus” point is referring to the Arceus you were supposed to encounter when using the Azure Flute (before the distribution of the item was cancelled). If you hack the Azure Flute into the game, it’s still fully functional and lets you catch a Level 70 Arceus, so it was probably taking about that.
It is still obtainable using the void glitch, surprised "the void glitch" was not on here.
It was Level 80, actually. I really wish it was at least Level 90 (to 100) though tbh because it’s literally the God Pokémon!
Lmao I didnt realize you could actually do that with hacks. I thought it was another one of those school yard rumors that went around back then lol

Or they became stell type because G Team turned them into cyborgs abusing their hability.
that's not a theory, that's cannon. about the fossils i mean
Kabuto is a trilobite which is a ocean rolly-polly/pill-bug, so this makes sense.
Maybe Genesect is what happens when you unfossilize a full sized Kabutops instead of the unevolved Kabuto when you use evil mechagodzilla tech?
My favorite fan theory is that Charizard is fire type because it breathes fire
@@machina5 that one was confirmed, courteously by the move “stealth rock”
Right! Mega-Evolutions are the new PokeGods
Poor guy took a wrong turn at Tallon IV and ended up in Kanto. He still thinks he’s on the right track to find Samus and the baby Metroid.
Multiverse theory at work…
But in all seriousness, if you put wild animals into a world and then introduced wild animals that can breathe fire or generate massive electric shocks and ALSO have human level or higher intelligence, you can bet the normal animals aren’t going to survive very long.
I just assume it’s eventually Pokémon eventually fills in the gaps for other animals, like Lobsters in the first Gen and now we have Corphish
And gen 4 took it further by adding Arceus and all of that
Perhaps because regular animals were going extinct and pokemon are an invasive species? That's my theory, anyway.
@@princesscrystal6410 That's the reason. I think it's said in some interview about the anime.
19:00 I love that scene, because of the context:
Diglett got rescued by you, after getting lost on Steel Mountain, and after defeating the boss, Skarmony, who didn't let Diglett go or something, you realize that you cant get Diglett across a cliff seperated you and Diglett. So, the Megnetmites you helped earlier carry it across the cliff.
It skips to your base (see timestamp), and after Diglett states that "It's feet still feel like there walking on air", your partner says "(Feet...?)", and the Magnemites say "(FEET? HE HAS THEM?)", as if they didnt carry that thing in the air just now
Yes! That game has a number of memorable moments for me, that being one of the top ones.
Nonnnom mommy
FEET? HE HAS THEM? is the funniest thing ever it’s been an inside joke for me for YEARS
The concept of cubone not evolving into kangaskan can be easily explained.

The problem is Genesect has a bug abdomen too, and Kabutops definitely does not
@@MichaelSotoCE I mean, Kabutops is based off of a species that's loosely related to lobsters & trilobytes, which are basically ocean insects, so Genesect being bug/steel still makes sense for this theory.

I find that to be so insulting for whatever reason. It's like GameFreak considers their fanbase to be too stupid to handle complex lore.

This is said by a character named Joe in season 1 episode 9, School of hard knocks.
Blue says he was in the Pokémon tower because he was looking for Cubone
Yeah, I've always found the theory goofy because why in the WORLD would he be so playfully competitive if you KILLED HIS POKEMON? Also, i've played countless Romhacks of FireRed at this point because it's the most common base used for ROMhacks and many of these don't change the dialog. Maybe it's different in the originals, but at least in the remakes, he never asks if your Pokémon is dead or if you've ever lost a Pokémon. He says "Hey, what are you doing here? Your Pokémon don't look dead! I can make them faint at least!"
Your theory also would fit for the actual reason.
A few theories that weren't on the iceberg but stood out to me:
Mossdeep Space Center rocket launches: In the Mossdeep Space Center in R/S/E, there's a scientist that states the number of successful launches they've had.
Not sure if I missed them during the video, but here are two gems from Pokémon Stadium:
It’s weird reading your comment because three days ago I encountered a shiny Rhydon in Crystal version at Victory Road lol

The '???' type also appears when a pure Fire type uses the move Burn Up, and is still present in the games, at least in Sw/Sh. This has actually led to some really interesting battle strategies, such as giving your pure Fire type Wonder Guard, making them immune to every move after they use Burn Up.
Actually no, since generation 5 '???' is truly gone, burn up makes the pokemon typeless, which might have the same effectiveness (being neutral all), but isn't the same thing, you can check Bulbapedia for more information

man, i wish i could have been alive to experience pokemania.. i was born during the tail end of pokemania. when i was in middle school obsessing over pokemon during the gen 6 era it was only popular within my small group of friends. everyone else thought we were weird for being so into it. the pokémon go craze was a thing, but it only lasted a month and i wasn’t even super into pokémon go. i would have killed to live thru a time period where everyone was as excited about pokémon as i was
I'm sorry you missed out, I was like 8 or 9 during that time, and it was insane

"for some reason I let my infant chew on a toy PokeBall and it choked to death. Clearly this is your fault"
True
They didn't even choke on it
Apparently it got suck on their mouths and nose and somehow that killed an infant...

I can't understand how a toy the size of a tennis ball became a choking hazard. That's like wondering how a puppy managed to eat a shoe whole.

1:16:42
If I recall correctly, In one of the early seasons, there's an episode where a young trainer is running on a treadmill while reciting the levels of which the caterpie(?) Line evolves. I don't remember the details, but I do know it's a thing
Yes! This is exactly what episode i was remembering! I think its the one with the school children. Definitely an early episode in season 1. Just looked, it's episode 9, titled "The School of Hard Knocks".
He was quizzed about pidgey. :) I know because I remember it evolves at level 15. (According to the episode)
And she points out that pikachu should be about level 25 with 2 badges but it's probably not there yet.

another theory that came to mind while writing this out, what if humans using pokemon at all was a recent development? not like yesterday or two days ago, but like a thousand years?

39:36 the Pokémon that’s “never seen the light of day is actually the Hitmontop beta!

Two theories I'd like to address:
- Gary's Raticate: I believe this Raticate did not die due to injuries but because someone at Gamefreak knew that rats have an insanely short lifespan, with some species barely averaging 1 year.
I guess those would somehow have healed when Machoke evolves again (he sprouts two new frigging arms, healing a stretch mark wouldn't be that much of a stretch, pun very much intended)
ratatta evolves at level 20 but the raticate was level 16. it had a disease where it grew up too fast and died

Smosh uploaded a vid of Ian and Anthony lipsyncing the theme song in 2005, which was taken down due to copyright.

I can still remember most of what we got in detail:
- a complete pokedex book, which was a must have in a predominantly pre-internet era
- pokémon apparel including long sleeve and short sleeve shirts, sweatpants, pajamas, hoodies/jackets and socks (I wish my mom would have saved those as much would likely still fit)
- several packs of cards
- gameboys with red and blue games
- and both of our favorite, extra large and super soft plushes-Pikachu for her, Charmander for me.
Super young to be so sneaky 😂

It's worth noting that the "white hand" NPC shows up in the Pokemon Origins anime short when Red visits the Lavender Town pokemon center. What's even more interesting about it is that there actually IS a faint white hand resting on Red's shoulder as he responds to their comment. Some of those Pokémon, like Meowth's and Ponyta's baby stages would later be considered for inclusion during gen 2 development (as they appeared in the Spaceworld 97 demo), but then they were cut again, and haven't reappeared ever since.
Thank you for including happy music. I love content like this, but i hate creepy music. Especially if i listen to them before bed. Awesome video!
The music is an instrumental of “2 B A Master” from the first Pokémon soundtrack!
kabutops would be bug water if he was actually alive. but since it is a living fossil, it is rock.
damn, this is a good point... didn't even think about that!
Yeah but wouldn’t Omastar be too? **D O N T F O R G E T L O R D H E L I X**
?
I was just about to sleep but god i cant miss this lol
Go to bed
@@JGR_JoeysGameReviews You go to bed!
"Bubo virginianus" is the scientific name for a great horned owl, which i've always assumed is what Hoothoot/Noctowl were based on. I'm guessing that's what Bobo is named after
That is a really funny name
22:51 Acording to the Pokémon anime the first Dynamax Pokémon is Tentacruel and the second is Dragonite
@man with a username same
Dynamax Tentacruel is technically seen in every episode of the first season bc it’s seen in the intro
It wasn't cut for unknown reasons. It was cut because the devs thought it would be too hard for kids to understand.
