When I saw that old X-Block, I knew we were in trouble ! It is unnatural and risky to cross your arms during a fight . If you want practical, here's practical : Assume your boxing stance and use your fists to deliver combination "block / strike" defenses . A " block " is not simply a passive barrier waiting to be slashed. A block is a light hit to deflect the knife arm off course . Deflect the knife arm while delivering a punch or kick . If you connect, follow up with more strikes . Once you have the advantage, try to stabilize the knife hand while delivering kicks . If you see it coming ( some guy brandishes a knife ) , try to grab an expedient weapon or shield and escape if possible . If you have your own knife, you may try drawing it and warning the attacker that it is now a bad idea to fight you .
I remember that Bruce Tegner, in his self-defense (and martial arts) series of books from back in the day, states that the most important first thing in a knife attack is to recognize the style of attack of the attacker so that you can prepare to defend against it. IIRC, he points out there are 4 possibilities: (1) is the "underarm" attack, such as that shown in the last part of the video (2) the "overarm" attack, which is just the opposite of #1, in which the attacker tries to stab downward at you (and which he recommends countering using either a forearm to block the attacker's stabbing arm or the same crossed-wrist block shown in the video) (3) the straight in stab (which requires you get off line to defend) and (4) the side-to-side slash .. which requires you either get back out of the way until the attacker's arm goes past you or, if quickly enough, to move in and block/lock the arm ahead of the proposed arc of the slash. I think Jason mentions in the video that AF has done "many videos" about knife attacks, but to me it appears there are only a couple or so in addition to the present one. Would like to see more of them, covering all 4 styles of attacks. A very important topic! Could also use more than 1 or 2 videos about gun defenses, inc. against pistols, rifles/shotguns, guys .. As you often point out in the videos, armed (gun) attacks are becoming more common all the time.
We use cheap dust suits from Screwfix and red marker pens. that way it will give you a basic understanding of how much you will make contact with the blade. Always equalize the situation with anything you can get hold of if possible, of course number one is to run away if possible! Good vid.
My ex attacked me with a knife. I disarmed her, i won. I find that going on the offensive is the best way to defend yourself. You can very easily defend yourself against a knife. it's all dependent on the situation.
If it is all dependent on the situation, then it is not easy to defend against a knife at all. You had the advantages of weight and taking the offensive before she could realise what's happening. Even in the hands of an inexperienced person, a bladed weapon is still very dangerous. No patterns to be read. I commend you for managing to protect yourself unscathed but I do insist that you think twice before saying relatively nonchalantly that it is easy to defend against a bladed weapon. Imagine if it was a male friend of yours with the same build.
The sewing machine attack with a knife is the most dangerous. The knife is pumped rapidly in and out like a sewing machine needle, making it very difficult to stop. This is the preferred knife fighting style in prisons. A news story explained that 2 police officers successfully disarmed a knife wielding suspect. Everything looked good, until he drew his gun and shot both of them. Fortunately a security guard came to their aid; they were able to subdue him and both officers survived. The lesson is never to assume that a violent criminal is only carrying a single weapon. Just as cars have spare tires, criminals can also carry spare weapons.
Agree with 99% of all you showed and described about being attacked with a knife, the 1% that I disagree with is that X block let me explain, remember that the person attacking you has 2 hands and 2 legs, if he grabs your hair or Jacket or shoulder he is able to pull you in and use his knee to stick the knife into you, I prefer to enter instead of retreating with my hands open to try and clamp the hand with the knife and try to bring the knife and arm to the rear of my attacker. The other option would be to get to the outside of the arm holding the knife. But in all street fights especially knife attacks is that they are unpredictable.
@ 6:05, actually, the crossed-wrist block for knife attack is a traditional JiuJitsu defense technique, although many martial arts have since adopted it over time. IIRC, even judo utilizes something similar. I always thought it was a risky tactic b/c it requires superior strength and superb timing to be effective -- else you are going to likely sustain a serious laceration injury(s) to your hands and/or arms (which alone may put you out of further action against your attacker). ☹
Since watching the video, I have run across other UA-cam videos depicting a very scary and uncommon type of knife attack, typical in prisons and such .. nicknamed "the sewing machine". As named, it involves the attacker rapidly thrusting their knife back and forth at their victim repeatedly, akin to a sewing machine needle being used to sew something. I did see various defenses to such an attack presented in UA-cam videos, including at least one using traditional Aikido techniques (which, IMHO, I believe might prove to not be effective/practical on the street). Would be curious to see what our Aikidoflow boys come up with to defend against such an attack. Based on those videos out there and the past A.F. videos on knife attacks, I would envision it involving using the "x-block" with the forearms to stop the initial thrust, then grabbing the attacker's wrist forcibly with both hands to immobilize it, possibly a well-placed knee blow, and then finally finishing with the execution of a joint lock/throwing technique of one type or another to (break the arm? wrist?) and disarm the attacker. ? KEEP GROWING, AIKIDOFLOWERS!
We had an incident in our small 'burb a few years ago where some nutty individual just decided they were going to take a machete and walk up and down the front of a small strip shopping center near my home, looking for ways to get inside and commit mayhem on people. Most of the shopkeepers saw the man coming and quickly locked their doors. Finally, a lone police officer arrives on the scene. First thing he does is draw his gun, and when the unhinged person refuses to drop the machete, opens fire on him from a distance, killing him. From the way the person appears on dashcam video, he was moving slowly, as though he appeared to be drugged or possibly was mentally challenged. It haunts me that, rather than just shoot the person down like a dog, an officer with proper hand-to-hand combat training could have disarmed the man instead, possibly if he distracted the man from the front while another officer snuck up on the dude from behind.
O.K., so what is your follow up tactic after 7:59? You've stopped the stabbing motion from continuing (assuming the attacker gives up at that point) but then what do you do to get the knife (and hand/arm it's in) under control and taken away from them? Otherwise, the attacker may just renew their attack.

i stand corrected this dude WILL get you killed
I appreciate what you guys do but please, please, please bros don;t tell people if they get cut/slash on the forearms or anyplace othr than the gut ..thats its ok...its not ok...a knife slash can cut a main vein in the forearm or other parts of the body and cause immediate shock..There is absolutely no effective unarmed defense against a knife. If you don't have an instrument on you like a stick, cane, staff to maintain distance and strike... you are at the attackers mercy
That will not work in a street fight cause you never know what the are going to do people have been known to fight dirty in a street fight
Hi are you in uk 🇬🇧
I would just run, I'm a fast runner
On your technique there-- BREAK the freakin wrist.... don't just twist it.. SNAP that joker.. I DO.. and as you say- will still most likely get cut- but he's NOT picking it up again with that same hand!!
He has a knife in his hand, thx for the vid.
Update: he had a gun
👊👍
Sorry, but nobody every tried to stab somebody like that
No one ever tried to stab someone in the torso? Really?
COME TO JAMAICA

Simple if you want to win against the knife just get a gun keep your distance then pull the trigger at the target with the knife and I think you will come out victorious
Unless the knife is thrown as you go for your holster.
@@billyboonevideos then they better be a damn good knife 🔪🗡️ thrower
I can't believe what rubbish this guy talks.
I was frightened of getting hit in every single skirmish I had as a youngster but it had little bearing on the actual outcome.
Why? Because you never know if that one hit will take you out.
Remember that a man that is good with a knife has 2 hands. One for the knife and one to strip a block.
