Hey Arnold is my favorite cartoon of all time! Growing up I would always say my favorite was Invader Zim in order to sound cool in front of my friends. But as I got older I realized just how special Hey Arnold really was.

As someone who grew up with Hey Arnold in his teens , I could definitely say it's not Nostalgia that brings you good memories with the show; It's more of, how they handled it with its array of beautiful jazz, fun Hijinx or nice calming relaxing moments that help bring the mood of the show together. Currently I'm 36 years old, and I still watch the show on occasion, whether the box set or its long awaited sequel movie, and it still brings me great joy an appreciation for what they had done in the show.

As a fellow '90s kid, this was one of the most loving tributes to describing our generation's childhood I've ever heard. Wonderfully written and narrated.
"Hey Arnold" was an absolutely amazing show. It was a favorite of mine as a kid, but I've come to love and appreciate it even more as an adult. We were truly lucky to get such a show that took its time with story, character development, showing diversity without making it seem like quota-filling or winking to the audience about it, etc. It's a classic.

Not just nostalgic. Musical inspiration from decades prior combined with a unique animation style and the setting in a fictional city. Those qualities detach it from most time periods wich to this day makes it literally timeless.

The quiet melancholy moments of this show that are overlaid by some soft jazz music and no one is talking but rather just dwelling with their thoughts and emotion were pulled off so well in this cartoon. A feat rarely pulled off to such success. Not every episode ends with a happy moment but many many end sadly. This show truly is The Peanuts of the 90s

You dear sir, have a voice that is buttery smooth, like some unintentionally, non-invasive sensual thoughts are being whispered into my ears... and while the thoughts themselves, combined with the years old feeling of "what once was", might be just that - the video as a whole, brings a mountain of questions to light that are extremely relevant today. Touching on things like "empathy", "compassion", "abandonment", and "depression".
This, Adam, is a great new path you've chosen :) To interject some "real" into the platform that i think might've been missing. And while these things individually, might already be found here, this is something that i would gleefully watch with a glass of wine, wrapped up in a warm blanket, not disregarding the problems that somewhat plague my current life situation, but instead, embrace the difficulties, and better understand what we, as people, should be focused on, more so now than ever before... "appreciation".
Subbed and liked, my good man :) Great work!

Loved this - Very well-articulated review of Hey Arnold!. This was also one of my favorites and I grew up with it as well. It was such a brilliant show, I think because of the fact that it didn't sugar-coat life and discussed real issues that people actually deal with. It really made it a point to paint each character as a multi-dimensional and relatable character and I could see a bit of myself in a few characters which made me fall in love with the show. Even now if I watch an episode, I can see the genius behind the writing and the raw humanity it shows. I'm so glad I grew up with this show and hope there are shows that teach kids some of the real-life lessons that I learned from Hey Arnold!

Funny you should mention Recess -- a lot of creators from Hey Arnold! worked on that show, and there are definitely some commonalities -- ideas about kids having their own culture and social rules, about adults not always being right (and in fact often being as childish as kids)... Hey Arnold! goes a lot deeper than Recess, though. It has a lot of subtlety -- there are things communicated through expressions, vocal cues, and word choices that are easy to miss. Watching as an adult, I had impressions about characters and relationships, where, I wasn't sure if it was in the writing or just my interpretation. Later, I'd find out that it was in the writing, and I was picking up on stuff emotionally that I wasn't even registering logically. That is so hard to do, and I realy admire works that can pull it off.

Great video, man! I feel a deep personal connection to Hey Arnold!, and... It's complicated. The first time I saw it was when I was seven and saw Harriet the Spy in theaters. It was a rough version of "24 Hours to Live," and my reaction was, "Well, there's something I'll never watch!" The off-beat humor and... unique character designs put me off to it. I ended up watching it when it came out, anyway (I think in part because there was something novel about having been on of the first to see it), and of course, I ended up loving it. I even liked that episode once, because it no longer felt so random and zany once I had a feel for the characters. It was never my very favorite show growing up, but I'd say it was one of them, and I watched it for many years. Helga was my favorite, and... As a kid, I couldn't really see how Arnold would ever come around to her, but yeah, I did ship it, and... It wasn't my OTP or anything, but it was a ship that stuck in the back of my mind for years afterward. I'd occasionally have a dream that The Jungle Movie was finally happening, and they were finally going to get together. This was into adulthood.
When I heard the movie actually was being made, I wanted to rewatch the series, but I put it off for a bit. I had other things to watch, and I thought I wouldn't enjoy it as much as I had when I was a kid. Haha! What a laugh! I actually got way more into it. And definitely not just because of nostalgia. There was some of that, but more than that, I'm more sophisticated than I was as a kid. I definitely understood the broader points of Hey Arnold! then. But I've gained a lot of experience since then, both with literature [TV included], and with life in general. Some things hit me harder. Like, I wasn't even a year into being an adult orphan when I first rewatched, and... Arnold has his grandparents, but they won't be around forever. My dad was older when I was born, and then my mom died first... Even before my dad died, I'd lived with fears about being left without family for a long time. I also saw a whole new dimension to Arnold and Helga's relationship. I got the impression that he had affectionate feelings toward her from the beginning. As it went on, I felt like he felt connected to her in a way that he didn't with anyone else, because he knew she was lonely in a similar way to him. Like, where he often has to be the adult in the house and hurts for others, Helga has to fend for herself a lot and is afraid of being vulnerable with anyone. Things like that are difficult enough on their own, but they're further isolating because no one around you really understands (I love how this show acknowledges that kids' emotional lives can be just as complex and heavy as adults'). I can put it into words like that, but really, the connection I felt there was just that -- something I felt, like, Oh, they're definitely soul mates. Total OTP! I got impressions from both characters and relationships in this show that I thought might've just been me, but then I'd hear later that yeah, that was totally the intention. Some cues were just so subtle, communiated through expression or vocal cue, that they only registered subconsciously.
And it turns out I have a complicated relationship with Helga's character. Her more embarrassing moments had made me uncomfortable since I was a kid, but I'm not sure I understood exactly why. I've been obsessive about shipping since I was really little, so I knew I related to her romantic side, but... At that time, I didn't have access to fan communities on the internet. I knew it was weird to get so emotionally involved with fiction, and I didn't think anyone around me would understand. To me it was a core part of my identity, so I couldn't stand to be laughed at for it. It felt beautiful and meaningful, but at the same time, awkward and embarrassing. So I had this huge part of myself that no one knew. Oh, yeah, and having ships not work out, later, getting down about characters not being, technically, real, and then actual unrequited love... I know what it's like to have that kind of love/hate relationship with your own emotions. And also to feel dramatic and vindictive... And just generally her strong sense of self and willfulness and reliance on an inner reality to get through. Though I don't have those aggressive tendencies, Helga feels to me like who I feel myself to be in my heart.
Rewatching Hey Arnold!, I experienced a kind of nostalgia that was new to me. I had been through a lot at that point, and I'd been feeling gray and directionless. But I got emotional about this show in a way I hadn't for a long time. Instead of making me want to go back to my childhood, it reminded me that I'm the same person I was back then. I've grown, I know a lot more, my opinions have changed. But on a core emotional level, I'm still the same person who gets stupidly emotional about fictional characters. It took me back to that place inside myself I thought had faded away. So...
Hey Arnold! is a wonderful show all around, but that personal connection is why it's my favorite of all time. But you know, I think it's the kind of show that facilitates that kind of thing.

I feel whenever I watched this show, it was a fuel of a lot of nostalgia, maybe even more than that. This show represented life in which no other show had done before or done since. It perfectly presented life pre 9/11 and it’s interesting that the show ceased production in 2001. I find it sad how nick handled the show and airing the last couple of episodes

I wonder what was it about the 90's that lend itself to the environment that allowed these shows to be put on air. I don't know to many new cartoons, but I feel like kids show now lack that same quality of many 90's cartoons.

    • @Nerdybit
      @Nerdybit  3 роки тому

Very curious, right? Here's a crazy theory -- The late 80's - early 90's were some of the most peaceful post-war times in recent US history. I think the whole country was rather laid-back and shows from the 90s reflect that attitude. Special times for animation and story telling for sure. No political undertones, no cultural divide... just living life.

I reminisce a fair bit about some old TV shows, but Hey Arnold holds a special place in my heart.
I've always been a rather melancholy person, even in childhood, and Hey Arnold was the only work of fiction I encountered as a child that helped me get in touch with that part of myself. I recently re-watched a few episodes on a whim, and was really glad that I could still feel that same sense of poignancy even after all these years.
Thank you for sharing this video essay! Cheers!
P.S. Would you mind if I ask what song you used at around 1:10? It sounds really familliar, but I don't remember that from the Hey Arnold soundtrack

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles and madness in this world today, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is
murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
. The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction).
He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
Christ says in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]
    - (AMPLIFIED version)
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus.
