These three cars are so desirable, the audi might be sllower but it's NA, the porsche is an absolute weapon and is practical, and the Mclaren... well it's a freaking Mclaren ffs. They're all gorgeous, I'd have all three.
True... Interesting that in GT3 racing - the RWD version of the Audi R8 dominates both of these cars in the series they compete in. Audi always "plays it safe" with their road cars.
Amidat Where do you get that information from? Also the 570S and 911 TS are not GT3 cars ... that would be the 650S GT3 and 991 GT3 R/RS/RSR (but don't think many/any are running those yet ... so most 911 R8 has been up against would have been the 997 GT3).
I am a huge 911 fan, but cannot ignore the fact that R8 comes with NA V10 Engine which means it is rare and sounds way more orgasmic than both 570S and Turbo S, is cheapest and just a second slower than these Turbocharged monsters. They have done a very good job!
Yup, sadly everyone on the internet thinks that if a car is 0.2sec faster than another round a track that automatically makes it much, much better and the obvious choice if you had to buy one of them..
***** No, of course not. I'd definitely get the Mclaren over the 911 even though I don't really like it. Those 0.2sec of extra perfomance will make all the difference on my sunday blasts down my favourite road.
Audi has a more powerful and more torque-y turbo V8 engine that it puts in it's RS cars... They stay with this "relatively low torque" V10 to not make their Lamborghini subsidiary look bad. That is what held back the R8 in this - the lack of torque.
Audi wont put yet a turbo engine in R8 because a turbo engine response sucks when compared to a normally aspirated one. And in a sports car you need that. Torque is good for lazy people who do not want to shift or company car's users who want to try something else beside a diesel.
+Ben Krapf no more glitchy software? Can you expand on that? They still use that sluggish Android-based infotainment system right? I'd go for the 650S over this any day. Suspension is in a different class.
I expected the 911 to do better. It's the most expensive one. If the 911 couldn't even beat the McLaren on a relatively slow track it would have no chance on a faster track where the McLaren range shine. The 911 should have been fastest given it should have better traction in slower corners, as with all 4wd.
doesn't make sens at all, you get 4wd you get weight with it, the tires can be changed easly not to mention that from factory you can get optional tires, changing car layout is another story
a AWD would make the mclaren slower because it would be much heavier etc. The porsche would be faster because having the engine in the rear and awd is a deadly combination. Thats why the Porsche would definitely beat this mclaren with track tyres. Thats just a fact. a sticky tyre makes a car about 4-6 sec faster on a 1 min track. This are tyre manufacturer informations! .... so just make a calculation about how much faster the porsche would be ;)
In addition to the cars being tested in their OEM configuration and the 570s having Pirelli Corsa tires as a consequence, it was the only one car biting the asphalt with only two wheels, so this is as fair as it can possibly be.
But it's also a lot lighter. Don't forget that. It's more of a track car than a sports car, like the other 2. Mclaren 570 GT is more of a sports car and comparable to these 2. But a Mclaren being fast is no news. It's the one thing they always concentrate on, rather than making desirable sports cars. Hence why they lose value so fast.
+Fast Er The 570s is just a sport GT car like the the other two. The lightness comes from its nature. And the grip is proportional with the coefficient of friction and mass distribution (including here the number of wheels which can pull if you refer to traction) rather than weight. Weight however helps comfort and at low speeds may help traction under some circumstances (also at low speeds), while lightness doesn't really. So the comparison between the 3 looks fair from pretty much any angle you look at it.
Also keep in mind that the tires on the 570S are significantly narrower than those on the 991 - 225 fronts and 285 rears. 20 mm of tread makes a difference. If people want to switch tires, then use the same sizes. Wait for the understeer.
The argument amongst the children here is laughable. One would think that they've driven all three cars extensively with elite skills. Sorry, but being good at Forza doesn't give you the license to rubbish any of these cars. All three are fantastic in their own right.
Light Yagami how is the McLaren a better car? Considering its power to weight advantage over the other two cars it should have won by a larger margin. The 911 does it all while being the most luxurious
lmfao, brainwashed Porsche fanboys make me laugh so much! Even if the Porsche fell to pieces, they would still think they are better?? Put them all on a proper high speed race circuit and the McLaren would be off into the distance. Tight chicanes suit 4WD, but the 570S beat both of them. McLaren is king, Porsche is history.
Steve did say that the track line was dry. If you can't believe them on that statement alone, you might as well disregard any automotive comparison from here on out.
+Alan Bowers he said "it's pretty much dry" then said it's dry, so you'll have to excuse his skepticism about weather it's the truth or not. I can definitely see how a possible wet or damp spots on the track could affect that
I love Porsches but that turbocharged flat 6 sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I like GT3's and other NA models like Cayman GTS and Carrera GTS soooo much better. They not as fast in straight line but more fun and they sound incredible. And the 570S yes.. its a fantastic car. Its a shame though that the rear window on the 570GT looks soooo much better because the 570S is a better supercar
I'm glad the McLaren won here. being light and having a fine tuned chassis is the way to go. the Germans are too heavy with their sophisticated 4wd systems. more important than lap times, Steve said the McLaren felt most like a track car out of the 3, which makes it a clear winner for me.
Here comes the tyre train everybody, I struggled to keep up with those laps and that trail car going off course put a shiver down my spine, fucking brilliant test!
What an astonishing machine the Porsche. A "grand tourer" with four seats and street tires that destroys anything in the track, what an engineering achievement.
All are amazing, but how could you walk past the Turbo S? Collapsed-lung acceleration, AWD for any road and any weather, 2+2 seating, massive build quality, GT ability to blast across Europe and destroy a race track too. Astonishing car.
+Auto Express Have you got the full racing laps of each cars with vbox telemetry data overlay? Quite annoying to see a fast lap with no data of what the cars are doing!
I love all three, but I'd still get the R8 if it's just a weekend car or 911 otherwise. Lap times are all good, but it's all about the emotions and experience you get, and that's where it becomes hard to beat the naturally aspirated V10
McLaren for me please. It's just so special, carbon fibre tub, same engine as the P1 and McLaren name... one of the best F1 teams ever. I love R8's engine, styling is cool too, but that's it. It could be a more interesting car if it was RWD, but we all know it will never happen. And the 911 Turbo. I'd rather have the GT3 myself. Turbo for me is just a 911 on steroids. Yes, it's a capable and practical car, but two other car here are much more special.
Not the same engine as the P1, the P1s engine is completely unique compared to their other cars it doesn't share a single component. Even the block has a different part number because it is made of a different alloy.
Whether or not the MCLaren is the fastest, if it had AWD would it still be faster and if it was heavier would it still be so good, put the sticky tires on the Turbo blah blah blah. The fact is the 570 is brand new! The Turbo S is YEARS old. OK, they updated the platform, but have been since the Turbo was first itorduced IT SHOULD BE GOOD! You Porsche fanboys are fucking pathetic. They have spent billions researching in to improvements over the years. Barely updated the look of the car with just a few tweaks and such. But you lot, think the Turbo S just came out of no where 5 minutes ago and took diwb every other car! Lets see the 570 in 40 years time how BRILLIANT it would be...
@@GraveUypo You're absolutely right. There is almost always bias in every opinion... ALMOST. I have had the privilege of driving the 911 on a track day, the v10 plus as a hire car, and I have just chosen the mclaren 570s spider as my next hire car, which is what brought me here. Right now I would opt for the Naturally aspirated R8... Instant power delivery, fantastic brakes, capable of oversteer when pushed, nicley planted. Only downside which I could tell is the electric steering being a little less communicative than I'd like. The Porsche is very fast and capable, but failed to spark any emotion. However, on paper I would always opt for the Mclaren out of the 3 and not because of the aforementioned British bias, but because of it's characteristics; RWD, lightweight, agile, hydraulic steering, and you have to work for it... it's a drivers car! If the Germans or any other nationality had built a car with these characteristics it would not change my opinion of the car. I make up all of my opinions objectively, as I'm sure many others do. It's most likely your slight disliking of the British which pushed you to make such a comment in the first place.
I am a amateur race driver. Driving in endurance racing for years. And I can tell you that we once tried Michelin Cup 2 tiers and lost around 2 seconds per lap, compared to our R- tiers. Nothing changes the outcome of the lap time as using track orientated tiers. Don't understand why they do these comparisons with different tiers? I am super impressed by the Porsche. If it would have the same tiers as the McLaren it would have done far better. Some of you argue about AWD vs RWD. As a race driver I prefer RWD. It makes the car lighter and more nimble to drive. Sure on a wet track a would prefer the AWD. But in my book this race goes to the Porsche.
But stock, the Porsche doesn't come with those tyres so you cannot complain. McLaren put those tyres on even though it made the car more expensive, which shows up the Porsche as it's the most expensive yet does not come with them
Rather than saying how the McLaren won, I'd have pointed out how the 911 did so well when it's a Grand tourer not a track car. Incredibly close times though. If you did another lap in each the outcome could have been completely different.
yea the 570s performance was unexpectedly fast but they mclaren are of formula 1 pedigree anyway... id take a couple tenths of a second off for the everyday usability and beauty of the 911turbo s anyday as well.
Depends on what you want. My 991 Turbo bored the hell out of me in daily traffic. Yes - super comfortable, etc., but so was my Range Rover Sport. The 570S on the other hand feels alive and engaging even rolling in traffic at 35 mph.
nickys34 listen kid, everybody have different opinion on how a anythings looks (cars, motorcycle, a person's face, art, music, etc)... some people will say something is ugly some people will disagree, so if you can grow up and try to respect other's opinion, that'll be great for you
They were all in their optimum configurations when the lap times were taken Charles, promise, even if there are some shots where the 911's rear wing isn't out. We do the times, and then we shoot them; and then we shoot them some more. And maybe at some point during the latter the 911's Sport Plus button hadn't been pressed. Hope that makes some sense, cheers, Steve
good review ! as always and people are complaining about tires...but the sir told us! that they test them as brand new ...and mclaren just came with that tire....if Porsche uses ''CORSA'' tire it will be faster .....and dont forget that this cars have fully adjustable suspensions ....so there is even more time in the suspesion settings
Hey Auto Express, I'm a new subscriber and I was wondering if you could add a few things to your already superb videos. I'd love to know at what speed you start each lap just to get an estimate for comparisons. I'd also love to see the G's that each super car pulled around the bends of your track. I hope you take these thoughts in consideration for your upcoming videos and thank you for the great content!
The Porsche would smoke the Mclaren if it had the Corsa on. I do a lot of racing. The tyres are one of the absolut key elements for a better lap time. Super impressed with the Porsche.
If either of you would have taken 2 seconds to look in the description which takes you to the website and the written article, you would know its the newest 991.2. While the Porsche is my favorite of the test, they still gave it last place in this comparison. I kinda agree. Both of the other 2 cars just look more exciting to drive, regardless of speed.
Allot of Porsche fanboys complaining about the tyres. The Turbo S and 570S were both on the tyres they come with. The Porsche is AWD and has the same tyres you would fit on a 918. The 570S is lighter and more track focused. Its a worthy winner and just happens to be sexy af.
+john m I've tracked both in F1 Barcelona circuit, and there is 2sec difference in the firsts laps, after few more laps, the Supersports performance comes down like crazy.
I’m sure you will tag me as a fanboy as I own the 991.2 Turbo S, That being said tires make a huge difference here’s the difference the PSS on the Porsche and Audi have a tread wear of 200 designed for more everyday use, even moving up to the Cup 2 treat wear is 120 much softer tire and grippier there so much more then the PSS. Now the P0s Corsa ( PZC4 ) have a tread wear of 80 and is considered a track only tire with super soft sticky tires. There trying to say Race tires over street tires are the same but there not. In this style of comparison the whole test is is Invalid as to meany variables.
The video did not mention that the Porsche and Audi use fatter broader tyres. They made it sound like the Mac had a tyre advantage but if anything it is the other way around.
3 awesome cars driven hard an very well by an experienced driver , the truth is that 90percent of people who will buy them will and can't drive them like this so let's just enjoy the experience of them doing wat they do . Also very good vid keep it up
I love all of them, it would be a hard choice. On the other hand, god damn can he drive and speak at the same time :D Just a superb performance from Steve both as a journalist and a driver
Reading the comments on here, i can't believe how butthurt Porsche fanboys are for having lost against a well superior car. Take a walk, come back next time with a better car. Sometimes, I feel like porsche fanboys are worse than GTR fanboys. Sad.
top test from Steve as usual - although Tires become such a big differentiator - they need to be the same on all 3 cars in order to do a test. Then 570S tends to have over 600 hp in real life. I'd still say the 911 is overall winner taking it's all year around Qualities but for those who want something more flashy the Mac package is hard to beat
Amazing that the Porsche would be still the faster can when you would change to same set of tires. Than it would be also better in dry conditions than the McLaren. In all other conditions it is already better (rain, dirt, normal roads, daily driving, comfort, ...). Same happened when they test the GT3 RS vs the 675LT ... With way better race tires the McLaren was just 0,006 seconds faster. With same set of tires this would change drastic, so that the Porsche would be about 1,2 to 1,5 seconds faster per lap.
"better"? you talk like you've thoroughly tested both cars in all conditions. The cars are so close in lap-times that it comes down to subjective preference.
Yeah yeah, that's the tyres they came on, that's cool but it'd be nice to see how that went down if they were all on the same rubber but in all seriousness there's not really a flea's dick between them. The Macca is nice but I personally find it unattractive shall we say, Porsche is probably the most attractive with the Audi close behind, I'd take Audi for its motor..
McLaren are amazing, there's not a bad car in there entire range and the fact they've achieved all this quality in 5 yrs makes it even more astounding, great to see a British car brand beating the established Marques
Put the same P Zero Corsa tires on all 3 cars and run them around the track again. Results would be different. You can't say one car is faster than the other if one has a much better rubber on.
What I am not able to wrap my head around is why are people complaining about tires the Michelins strapped to the Porsche are more or less the same as the Corsas. You wanna upgrade how about use the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s also found on the 918. They were good enough to beat the P1. But that would mean upgrading the 570s to a set of Trofeos or Trofeo Rs as found on the P1. I still think the 570s would win because it's so much lighter. People are saying the Porsche would get 3 seconds over the 570 if it had the same tires. Are you kidding me?! 3 seconds on this small track is monumental. That would be like 20 seconds at the Ring and we know damn well the McLaren isn't 20 seconds slower. If the Porsche were faster it maybe by a tenth of a second or two and that's a big IF!
I understand the argument that the McLaren comes fitted with super-sticky tyres from the factory and therefore should be tested as such, however, in the interests of fairness it might have been advisable to run the same tyres on all cars and THEN state that it is infact one of them that comes with those tyres as standard.
Not a fair comparison at all! Porsche had the bigger wheels with 305 rear tyres. 570 had the only size wheel they come with but with corsa tyres! The R8 was hindered by have the smaller wheel option with narrower tyres.
This shows how extremely good the Porsche is, with the Trefeo tires it would have won and this is with the weight disadvantage...I am a amateur racing driver and know how important the tires are and you could argue that if the 570s had four wheel drive then it would have won, but it is not that easy making a great four wheel drive system is very complicated and ads weight and it can be a disadvantage having a four wheel drive car on the race track so who says it would be better for the 570s with the four wheel drive...change tires takes minutes making a four wheel drive system that works perfectly takes generations of cars.
These three cars are so desirable, the audi might be sllower but it's NA, the porsche is an absolute weapon and is practical, and the Mclaren... well it's a freaking Mclaren ffs.
They're all gorgeous, I'd have all three.
Well said my friend!

Yeah. The technology is proven and the quality is second to none.
it's not rare if you look on the used market, E60 M5 and older R8 are cheap to buy now

My mistake, I thought the engine block is the same and the internals are obviously different on the P1, thanks for clearing this up!
Spoke too soon...R8 V10 RWD currently in production.
Nyiko Malongete Well when you wrote your comment his comment was already 10 months old.
“It’s so fast through the chicane”
Because you drove straight over it!
What a machine that Mac is, top work Steve
All with equal rubber would have been a lot different. Like to see apples to apples in these comparison tests, as possible. All great rides.
Are there any channels on UA-cam where they test all the cars on the same tires?
Why the Porsche isn't in sport plus mode with it's wings extended?
is this the same track the grand tour uses?
Lets see the 570 in 40 years time how BRILLIANT it would be...
the bigger fact everyone's forgetting is british bias.
you can 100% sure there's some of that here. like always.
*****
SO when the Germans win it's not biased? They win because they keep remaking the same car time and time again!
sw1000xg See what you've said there? I can tell you that you're the fanboy over here
@@GraveUypo You're absolutely right.
Bought a 570S one year ago and love it more every day. Fast, comfortable and extremely stylish......what else could I ask for
How is the reliability of the car?
Kudos on the chase cam. Well done!
ok so in conclusion the porsche wins. with same tires obviously.
But stock, the Porsche doesn't come with those tyres so you cannot complain. McLaren put those tyres on even though it made the car more expensive, which shows up the Porsche as it's the most expensive yet does not come with them
but the 570s is only rwd so the grip is probably still not as good. though, that means it weighs a lot less.
+Russell 2/10's of a second isnt "showing up" anything. But nice try fanboi.
Yep... agreed.
Porsche decided to go with a more confortable tire, Mclaren with a more "racy" tire.
In conclusion the Porsche lost. It has AWD vs RWD on a damp track. What's your point, you degenerate moron
Rather than saying how the McLaren won, I'd have pointed out how the 911 did so well when it's a Grand tourer not a track car. Incredibly close times though. If you did another lap in each the outcome could have been completely different.
i don't care what people say... i'd still take that beauty turbo s over the other two
Yes !
yea the 570s performance was unexpectedly fast but they mclaren are of formula 1 pedigree anyway... id take a couple tenths of a second off for the everyday usability and beauty of the 911turbo s anyday as well.
Depends on what you want. My 991 Turbo bored the hell out of me in daily traffic. Yes - super comfortable, etc., but so was my Range Rover Sport. The 570S on the other hand feels alive and engaging even rolling in traffic at 35 mph.
Porsche just won LeMans twice, and already were on the market decades before McLaren made their first car. Stop making excuses.
nickys34 listen kid, everybody have different opinion on how a anythings looks (cars, motorcycle, a person's face, art, music, etc)... some people will say something is ugly some people will disagree, so if you can grow up and try to respect other's opinion, that'll be great for you
3 great cars. Cool test.
Why do comparisons like this if you aren't going to use the same (or at least same class) of tires on each vehicle?
Nice video but the porsche does'nt seems to be in sport plus mode because the rear spoiler is down.
All right thank you for your answer, love your videos , keep it up. Cheers, Charles
What you reckon a 675LT would do around that track?
It would be closer to P1 territory. Different class.
Bye bye Porsche.
6, 8 or 10?
good review ! as always and people are complaining about tires...but the sir told us! that they test them as brand new ...and mclaren just came with that tire....if Porsche uses ''CORSA'' tire it will be faster .....and dont forget that this cars have fully adjustable suspensions ....so there is even more time in the suspesion settings
love his reviews!
Ok so who the hell was the camera man who decided to straight line the Chicane 😂
I'd get out of his way seems like you were holding him up
what a fantastic showdown!
damm that mclaren ( like all mclarens) is one awesome car ..well done on a well deserved win yet again
991 or 991.2? Difficult to tell on the Turbo....
was wondering the exact same thing, I'm gonna guess 991.1
.2, look at the steering wheel, i think that wheel design only comes with the .2
If either of you would have taken 2 seconds to look in the description which takes you to the website and the written article, you would know its the newest 991.2. While the Porsche is my favorite of the test, they still gave it last place in this comparison. I kinda agree. Both of the other 2 cars just look more exciting to drive, regardless of speed.
sexyitalian891 oh yea always forget about the description section. I wonder out of all 3 cars which one depreciates the worst
Taillights. 991.2 has the 3-D taillights that are somewhat concaved.
Having a kid, the only option is the Porsche! I test drove the 991.1 Turbo S and it was incredible. Can't wait to try the 991.2!
you guys should do a drag race with these cars
Allot of Porsche fanboys complaining about the tyres. The Turbo S and 570S were both on the tyres they come with. The Porsche is AWD and has the same tyres you would fit on a 918. The 570S is lighter and more track focused. Its a worthy winner and just happens to be sexy af.
Get your information right. The 918 uses Pilot Sport Cup 2 not Pilot Supersport which is the one used by the Turbo and the R8.
+john m I've tracked both in F1 Barcelona circuit, and there is 2sec difference in the firsts laps, after few more laps, the Supersports performance comes down like crazy.
If Porsche offered the Corsas then they'll use them. But they don't, so they used what Porsche supplied them with.
I’m sure you will tag me as a fanboy as I own the 991.2 Turbo S,
That being said tires make a huge difference here’s the difference the PSS on the Porsche and Audi have a tread wear of 200 designed for more everyday use, even moving up to the Cup 2 treat wear is 120 much softer tire and grippier there so much more then the PSS.
Also very good vid keep it up
2:38
Navigation System "recalculating" lol
I have never seen a car more stunning than that Mclaren :o
I love all of them, it would be a hard choice. On the other hand, god damn can he drive and speak at the same time :D Just a superb performance from Steve both as a journalist and a driver
I thought the Turbo S comes with centre locking wheels?
Yes, put the Corsa on the 911 Turbo S and you have maybe a 0:42.20.
Compare the r8 or the turbo s to the California t
hardest $200k question I can think of.
I can almost see Jenson Button's face on that McLaren's front end, which is a good thing!
Can't wait for the gt2 RS to start smoking everything
All 3 lovely !!
BTW the TIRES make a huge difference here, Porsche with Pirelli's Corsa has the greatest performance
STEEVE!!!!! Welcome back!
That's some proper driving. Cheers
04:05 line of the camera car :-)
What s up 4:07... Love it, nice and clean, just between the cones !
Did anyone else see that the Turbo S was not on sport plus mode?!
The 570S would be my pick if i was spending my money. I love that Porsche though, its a monster.
