    Highland cattle will do all that tree and brush clearing. The clearing will go faster with a bull or two and ten or more cows. The boys like to compete and show off to the girls and so they push trees and brush over faster. They also head all the trees up to about five feet above the snow pack. I’ve had them for about 18 years and they really improved the landscape and built good soils. Now light gets in among the trees and grasses grow under the forest trees. I never had to use heavy equipment and had time for other projects while the cattle did the heavy work. Love to watch your progress.

    Very nice seeing the creek. If you build a pond and have a drop in elevation you could have a game changer as far as power production with a small water wheel.

    I've been following your journey since you left the valley 3 years ago. When you was at Bear Mountain you worked on my Mathews Z7 and HALON a few times and We would discuss your family's dream to homestead. I'm very happy to see that the dream has come true and I hope your shoulder/arm is doing much better now.

    One thing you can do to make those rocks much more manageable. Is drill in to them in lines like a cross. Then fill with water and let the winter freeze do the work. God bless

    Wow, the land is looking awesome! Use them big rocks as part of your dam for the pond. Get a box blade to smooth out the ground and get some grass seed down before that brush sprouts again. You've got the start of a beautiful little park there.

    We made apple cider every year back home, no auto everything was muscle power. When I was about 15 everybody had gone fishing at the coast.
    I decided to make cider, picked up, grind, pressed and then started to can. About 3 in the morning I had 30, 1 gallon jars of cider caned, finished time for bed. That was 1960, a very good time in life. Y’all are doing great, the best way, pay as you go. I’m proud of your entire family. Stay safe

    You should consider building a front section like the section you made where the mill is and you could use the space for a kiln you could on the roof put those see threw panels to let the sun in add some fans good way to dry out your lumber or just a place to put your lumber under a shelter this way you could also utilize the upper space or attic for something else! suppose something to consider down the road.

    Don't forget next time you are picking fruit that even the waste fruit on the ground can still help you as animal feed. I know horses and pigs love apples and not sure about the cows but even if you haul too much back the piles of fermenting fruit will attract fly's and wasps that the chickens can snack on.

    Have you thought about getting a set of feathers and wedges to let you split the bigger rocks into sizes you can move? A cordless hammer drill or a corded one and generator to drill the holes and then it is simply load the holes and hit along the line with a hammer till the rock breaks. Could even put the kids on it to turn the boulders into stone blocks to start a castle with or to use in retaining walls as you create more flat land for easier use.
    Don't forget clover as a lawn alternative. Naturally shorter then grass, flowers bees like and it will double as grazing area for livestock or attract deer. Why put in something you need to mow weekly when you can use a different plant for similar green coverage with a lower labor input.
    Do you think Red Poppy's mini excavator would have an easier time getting up into the spring area to clear it and help tap it? Is the spring high enough to be worth tapping for garden/livestock water separate from the creek and house supply? An independent water system for automatic watering of plants and animals separate from the home supply gives you a good backup in case something happens and lets you move the animals from the creek area for water.
    Would it be worth the effort to get the neighbors chipper to turn some of those piles into mulch/animal bedding? 12-24 inches of wood chips under the chickens will see you with some nice soil in a year or two for a future garden spot.

    • @bustedwagonranch4546
      @bustedwagonranch4546  4 роки тому +2

      Those are some great ideas. I plan on using all the boulders for a 300 ft retaining wall behind the house and shop. I plan on using the spring water, I'm just not sure for what yet.

    Burn in spring time? Surely this winter with an area cleared and snow on the ground, you could burn. You do have a few places for a pond and your spring area is prime. You might be able to clear a narrow channel on the downhill slope to drain the swamp. As for clearing, yup clear as much as you can - useful spaces An a Firebreak.
