I have the same radio branded Steepletone MBR 7 - I think they were made in the 80s - The Japanese sounding station you picked up was China Radio International I think. I love these radios - Thanks for the post - Very interesting.
Good old radio. Reminds me of a lot of other sw receivers of the period. The vega selina and even Amstrad made one very similar to your one. Cant remember the model though. But that was in 1982 i had that and remember listning live to the British task force landings on the Falkland islands broadcast by the BBC world service.very exciting at the time. Also radio moscow 24 7 broadcasting anti British and Anti American propaganda .Love this stuff keep it coming
I actually owned one in 1998. But it was slightly different version - instead of the PA switch mine has a BFO switch in place for single sideband SSB reception of the HAM bands on shortwave. BFO Fine tune control was also in place instead of the tone control. Great sensitivity and selectivity especially on FM where I connect it to a rooftop TV antenna and it would pick FM radio stations from 100 km to 200 km away!
This venturer type radio was branded by MANY companies. GE,panasonic, magnovox, some shorter unknown brands. I even think grundig sold these. They sold the same design well into 2000y
I got a steepletone version of that for £2 in a charity shop the other week..my mic socket doesn't work :( and the on off button is really temperamental ,But I've been having hours of fun with it
Just an FYI, the small knob inside of the larger tuning knob is for fine tuning. It would have helped you center on the stations that you were picking up. Most older SW radios have this type of set up. Thanks for the demo.
I love mine £20 plus £4 on eBay. I have steepletone version of. Any idea how much they were back in the day? Also did recommendations on switch cleaner please
I have the same radio with different name, Crusader - XK Multi-Band-Receive. I have a problem after break the tuner string. Any plan maybe or pic from inside? Thanks a lot.

I have the Steepletone version of this. I like the way the first aircraft you pick up on airband was a 737 MAX. Something not flying at the moment!

Enjoyed the video rusty. Thought it was 5w. I had a similar one and listened in to the police a lot in the 70s. A longer arial might improve that.
