- We focused only on riding the San Quentin in this video but we did a quick video a few weeks back about the specs and features of the new 2023 Marin San Quentin 1 and how it compared to the previous generation.
That video is here:

The weather has been cold and wet in Houston but we finally had a break to get out and about and ride the new San Quentin 1 for 2023 and see how it performed.
At $999 this is a beginner aggressive trail bike for those looking to jump and ride hard (although we do have some buyers that just want to cruise the streets with it too). Either way, it is a great way to get into the sport or upgrade an older geometry bike you may have laying around.
Jared, who works at the shop was nice enough to give it a go and use some of his skills and test it out (my skills as you can see are lacking at times!).
We had a great time on the bike and look forward to doing some upgrades on it in a future video. It is designed to be an aggressive trail bike and for 2023 feels even more DJ (Dirt Jumper) than before which makes it a lot of fun.
No, you don’t need to update it right away and most probably will be fine with the stock components. For us though, we notice things more and want to experiment as we have customers and viewers that ask about upgrades. Stay tuned for those videos. #bikingroots, #marinbikes, #marinsanquentin

Nice to see Jared's jumps with the GoPro but nothing can replace Evans sound effects while riding.
Haha, thanks man!
Rock gardens are the worst, I’ve been taken out by my local rock garden as well haha. Thanks for the content and details on the New Marin bikes. I just test rode a Rift Zone 3 27.5 and it was fantastic… probably going to pick one up later this year. Happy New Year and Cheers!
Thanks for the comment. Ha, yeah I was over confident and they showed me who was boss 😂. Oh nice, those are sweet! We had one in our rental fleet for a while. Marin is replacing it with the XR now for 2023. A bit pricier but the 2 trim for $2400 has a nice fork upgrade now so when the time comes, check them out! Take care
The San Quentin is labeled as an aggressive hardtail. Have you all had a chance to ride the El Roy? There's probably a niche market for it, so I can't imagine there's a high demand in Houston with the flatter terrain. Was curious if any of you all had a chance to compare it to the San Quentin.
Thanks for the question. So when the El Roy first came out we bought a bunch of frames, did a custom build (did a video actually abut itif you search back through our videos). It was/is a sweet steel aggressive hardtail. Hasn't sold great for us here in Houston but I could see where if you wanted to give your full squish bike a break, conditions were maybe not ideal, and wanted to bomb down the mountain, the El Roy would be a good option. The San Quentin is just a different breed of bike, especially in its new re-design. It just feels more like a playful, dirt jump/trail bike. Built more for jump sessions or quick switchback trails. It may just come down to 29 vs 27.5. Neither one in my opinion is better than the other, just different and have pros and cons. For the most part however, I will say jumpers/ shorter riders tend to prefer the advantages of 27.5 (from my experience).
After to seeing this i want it.
Nice! Glad you want it! You should get one! Also check out the San Quentin 2 and the 3 that were also just released. Video on those coming soon
Thanks for the SQ video! Where you guys riding?
sorry for the delayed response. We were riding at the cypress creek trail in north houston, tx area.
How tall are you and Jared? I'm 5'8" with 30" inseam so I think I should ride a size M. But I'm not sure since I was reading some riders saying they ride a smaller frame.
I’m 5’8” and shrinking, Jared is around 5’9”. I would say a medium would be good for you (I have a 30” inseam as well). I could ride a small (which I did for some of the video) but for trail riding it is small for me. Maybe if I was just jumping and using it as a session bike and not doing distance then it could work, but for an all rounder, I’d go medium. Good luck!
@@BikingRoots 🙏 big thanks exactly what I needed to know. Now if I can just find one in stock somewhere. Hopefully I'm just caught between the 23/24 models.
@@Mind_Funeral We have a medium in the blue/grey color in stock (not tan/black). Looks like March is the next ETA to Marin that I could see from my info.
Inseam does not matter when looking for bike size. Look at reach numbers and RAD.
@@auomauom in some cases maybe but some people are also built different with long or very short legs. Sometimes they are in between sizes, so it does come into play but yes reach is also very important and usually what we start with
Brooooo that fall was harsh 😬
I know right?! It happened slowly and then suddenly it went bad fast! So dumb. Oh well 😂
The sun tour fork on my sq1 is over 7 lbs!!! A new fork and goin tubeless would prob get the sq1 right around 30 lbs!!
Yup, they are heavy! I get why they put them on for the price point but yeah it's not great. In a video coming soon, we'll weigh the stock bike, do a fork upgrade, may or may not go tubeless yet. We'll see what it weighs before and after. Stay tuned
The manual dropper, huh? 1:16
Sorry it was a joke, it means you have to manually move the quick release lever to lower and raise the seat 😀 like the old days before dropper posts
Do u recommend this for a person looking for a budget hardtail to ride long distances, hit jumps and trails and do wheelies?
Yes to all those things. Long distances, maybe not as much depending on what sitting position you like to be in. Yes it would be fine for most people. Generally bikes geared more towards cross country (they are just designed a bit different) are better at long distances. It just depends what you will be doing most of the time. If jumping, wheelies, trail rides, and messing around is where you see yourself, then yes this will be a good option
@@BikingRoots 👍 sale ends in 3 days so i need to sell my current bike and try get it in time
@@Joel_9 ok cool. What sale are you referring to?
@@BikingRoots bikesonline has a sale on the 2023 san Quentin 1. Its 1100 instead of 1400
@@Joel_9 hmm maybe you are referring to a different bike. San quentin 1 is $999
I saw one UA-camr (Spindatt) say you're never to old to learn how to ride and jump. My response was, no I'm not to old to learn how to jump and learn tricks. I AM too old to fall though.
This video is Exhibit A. Hope the only thing hurt was your pride.
Haha, thanks for sharing and well said! Yes, I am getting too old to fall and it takes a lot longer to recover now (and if you go to the hospital, super expensive!). Appreciate it, I’m bruised up all over but should be fine soon. Wish it happened doing something cool and not just climbing up some slick rocks lol. Take care
@@BikingRoots This has been my mindset as I'm getting back into riding. One reason I don't expect to do alot of crazy stuff as it takes longer to heal.
@@MysticalDragon73 Yeah if you’re just getting back into it, go slow and make some good memories
