This video will show you how to winterize a boat with the Mercruiser 5.0L Thunderbolt Ignition. I replace the water with full strength antifreeze which is effective for very cold climates.
Best video yet! Thank you for taking time to do this. We have a boat that used to have a 5.0 but was replaced with a 5.7 and then put all the original 5.0 mercruser parts back on it. It’s very similar to what you have here :)
Thank you for the comment. Glad this video was helpful.
Very well done! Great attention to detail.
Thanks a lot that’s clear enough procedure.Well done mate!
Great video - very helpful for those of us who like to do our own work!
Thank you. Well done.
Very well done!
Thank you, glad that this was helpful.
Just a quick note if you live in the northern states on the great lakes use -100 antifreeze not -50 -50 can freeze at 25f
Thank you for this good step by step guide. I have a 4.3L similar engine and it looks very similar. Best regards from cold Norway :)
Good to hear that the video was helpful.
NORWAY ????!!!!!! Hey! from Maryland USA
Nice video. I have the exact same boat.
I love it
great video! Do you pour antifreeze down both of those hoses or just the big one shown in the video? Thanks
Thank you. Just the big one I showed in the video should do. Water enters the engine compartment through that larger hose and comes back out from the other side. The other smaller ones are the inlet & outlet through the exhaust manifold. If you pour in there it will drain out from the out-drive exhaust.
Can you add a video of how tondi the oil change if you have one
The oil change for mine is very easy since it has an oil drain hose connected to the bilge nut. All I do is open the end of the rubber hose and engine oil drains out. If you do not have a drain hose, you have to suction the oil out using an oil pump like this - amzn.to/3kc8EbG. I have one that I used on my older boat that did not have a drain hose. I use the pump for my Jeep as well for transmission service etc. See this video - ua-cam.com/video/JpGe_nysRJo/v-deo.html -- around 2:21 mins I show using the oil pump.
hi,Indi !Thank you for the video. very helpful! I just got the same engine. I have two questions that need your answers: 1. Why do I need to add antifreeze after the engine is drained? 2. When the engine is started for the first time in spring, there is no water in the engine. Is there any special operation required at this time?>>>> I started the engine for the first time this year and did not see any cooling water spraying out, so I have this question.
It is recommended to fill the cooling compartment with anti-freeze over winter since it can rust from air and moisture if left empty. If it was emptied, it should be fine. Make sure you connect the water inlet through the lower unit before you start the engine. If the water is not coming out within a few minutes, you should stop the engine and check the water pump impeller. That is a servicable part which often fails.
@@DIYWithIndi thank you very much! I understand, I will watch and confirm again. Looking forward to more videos.
@@seanzhou198 the water pump is self priming as long as the inlet/inlet hose is submerged ie the boat is in the water, within seconds of starting the engine the pump will start pumping water from the body of water into the engine, do not run the engine out of water (ie out a lake), unless you have the water inlet hose submerged in a 5 gallon bucket of water etc
Have you ever had any issues with the engine stalling and not starting again intermittently or immediately after changing the fuel filter?
I did not see any issues with starting after changing the fuel filter. I did prime it so the fuel filter is full of gas. The other option is to pour gasoline into the fuel filter before installing.
What do you inside the carburator ? WD40 also OK ?
Fogging oil.
