I love that you're attempting this challenge at your own pace! It's a nice reminder that we can make our own rules sometimes. Both the paintings turned out wonderful! This really motivates me to try this challenge out for myself!
I definitely feel motivated to try it, but I have just started to learn about drawing human faces. So might try making black and white sketches or so :D
The Zorn pallete is a revelation. The infinite varieties of value that can be created from yellow ochre, ivory Black, alizarin crimson cadmium red and titanium white is genuinely astounding. By reducing the choices available it is somehow easier to concentrate on the painting. It's almost freeing. And tye Mote you use it, the less desire you have to go jack to a massive range of colour. It's not so useful in landscapes but can create a muted look . Your portraits are so vigorous. Love them. I'm going to have a go at 100 and see if 8 can progress any
@@LulArt yes. The alizarin makes pinkier pinks. It's got more zizz. I knownits probably not the traditional line up but it gives another dimension. I onownits probably cheating. I forgot to mention raw umber.
Thank you for the lovely comment! I have been wanting to try the Zorn palette for ages, I think it suits portraiture so well. I really enjoy the muted-looking greens you can achieve with ivory black, yellow ochre, and titanium white. You've inspired me to finally give it a go! I'll try the traditional zorn palette first and then I'll try it with your additions (Alizarin and raw umber are two of my favourites, both staples in my palette!) Thanks for sharing your knowledge/experience with everyone. Good luck with the challenge, if you give it a try- I think you'll have a lot of fun! :-) 💛
Yes!! That's so awesome! I try to think about how much I can learn while doing this challenge and it really encourages me to follow through with it! Thanks so much for watching Moni, I hope you get a chance to do some more heads 😄
The Winsor and Newton clear gesso is the best. Smooth texture and actually drives completely clear, no milky finish. And craft acrylic paint gives the same effect and is a lot cheaper 💜✨️
Nice video, and the portraits look great! Today I start my 74th portrait drawing. I have become fanatical about it. I will definitely paint too. Thanks! Bless you!
If you use watercolor, I would give the viridian green and alizaron crimson combo another go. It’s one of my favorite limited palettes and works so well in watercolor
@arleebean has a wonderful video series on painting in limited palettes in watercolour. It might be neat to see how some of those unique combinations translate to oil or gouache.
I've been wanting to do the 100 heads challenge with paint! I'm excited to see the next portraits from you as well as how your portraits evolve throughout the challenge :]
That limited palette with Viridian and Alizarin sounds interesting but really hard. Love to know how that watercolour ground works out. I've never heard of such a product! I've tried the Zorn palette with watercolour and it was surprisingly versatile! I want to give it a go with gouache sometime.
i tried this challenge this year but didn't even reach 50 before giving up. lol. might give it another shot next year. doing it in paint and going at your own pace is definitely a good idea.
I have tried the 100 head drawing challenge in the past too, I can't say I even made it to 50! 100 is a lot haha. I'm hoping that sharing my progress here will motivate me to complete the challenge. I'd love to hear how it goes if you try the challenge again this year 😊 Thanks so much for watching!
good luck with the challenge and these portraits turned out great😀 some people really like the watercolour ground, other people hate it lol i want to try it on day to see which side im on
Hi Emily ! started to follow your channel a few days ago. Love it. Great job. I will try that 100 head challenge myself but wondering where you get the heads? Just starting in gouach Thank you :)
Hi there! I am so glad you found my channel and are enjoying my videos! 💛 As for the 100 heads references, I have a public Pinterest board with over 100 heads to choose from. I have it linked in the description box of my newer 100 heads videos, you can also search @emhuesart on Pinterest and you should find my page! 😊
From another art UA-camr @thefrugalcrafter I've learned clear gesso from liquitex is a really good base for coloured pencils and pastels because of the grittiness. How are your portraits going now?
Ooh thank you, I'll have to give it a try with other mediums! I can see how it would be great for pastels. The portraits are coming along slow but steady 😅 My next video will be a 100 heads update! I can tell that I am already learning so much from the challenge, I think it will be worth all the struggles!
Haha that's fair! I've been trying out the watercolour ground and I don't hate it, but it's definitely not my favourite way to work with watercolours 😅 I am actually currently working on a video about it!
@@GreyR38 yes absolutely! You never know until you try it for yourself. I've tried so many mediums that are just yuck - but then other people like them! It's all preference! I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about the watercolour ground honestly 😅
Thanks so much for watching! Have you tried a challenge like this before? I'd love to hear about it! ✨

Thanks so much for sharing Selene, I'll have to give the Winsor and Newton one a try! 💛😊
I really struggle with gouache too, but am also persevering because I’ve bought the paints now… I am going to use them haha 😂
Haha I think about it in that way too! I'm way too stubborn to give up trying 😂 Good luck on your gouache journey!!

What is the weight of paper you used ??
This is just a regular Moleskine art sketchbook! I think it's 111lb paper :)
Emily -- can you recall what your nail color was in this video? Elegant --
Thank you! I believe it's the Quo brand in "chartreuse" 😊💛

I have to say if you don't like the liquitex ground, don't bother with the watercolour ground cause it feels the same. So gross to paint on.
